My grandpa taught me when I was learning to plow, that we plow under sod in the fall. We then leave it over winter for the soil to settle, and the "green manure" to start breaking down without having been compacted by the tractor and disc. Then in the spring we would disc the soil and plant corn. This was a 5 year rotation. We plowed under the hay field to start the field fresh, then planted corn, then after corn we only ran the disc in the fall to cut up and work in the stalks lightly so they wouldn't blow away. the next spring we pulled the digger thought the field and then disced again before planting small grain, usually oats. The oats was a nurse crop for the alfalfa and grass mixed we planted at the same time. after the oats were harvested we did not do any tillage until it was time to plant corn again. Thanks for sharing Pete!
I’m wondering if anyone else got a chuckle out of the red paint going on a green plow, lol. I bet Pete set the green can back down and had a chuckle himself as he picked up the can of red heading out to the plow. Well played Sir, lol.
An old farmer friend of mine said, "The worst Fall plowing is better than the best Spring plowing". Guess that's your philosophy, too. I can hear the plow complaining, "Hey! I'm not supposed to be RED." Thanks for the videos.
My dad always plowed in the fall. He said the grass would compost and the freeze and thaw process in winter soften the soil. It also heated up fast in the spring. He always had beautiful fields the next year; so it must have worked. I love the sound of the tractor working to pull the plow. Have a blessed holiday, Pete & Hillary.
That plowing activity that you've got going on sure makes sense. Thanks for the explanation. And definitely a big deal. And those steaks. Oh my goodness !!!
the old john deere plow doing a great job i started plowing as a kid in 1975 with a john deere 4-14 and a 70 john deere diesel them jd plows did a nice job thanks for the memory
As always, Pete, your videos are so entertaining and informative. I learned more about plow adjustments and plowing than I ever thought I knew before. That was so kind of you to provide Hilarie with a throne from which to observe your labors. Enjoyed it as always. Thanks.
I absolutely love watching this whole process of plowing; along with the explanation on the how and why of doing it. Looking forward to watching how to get the soil leveled and seeded. Thanks Pete and Hillary for making these videos!
I like the way the 756 purrs pulling the 3 bottom. That field is practically virgin with all the years left to idle. Thanks, Pete and Hilarie, for another exhilarating Sunday. Have a good weekend.
Sod-bustin' Pete is at it again! Ezra's becoming quite the arial videographer under Hilarie's fine tutelage. And when a woman's grateful for an old chair pulled from the weeds as an upgrade from a bucket, she's a true keeper. And Patty's settled in for the winter, now she can holler about the quantity of the hay. God bless you folks in your efforts.
Is it just me, but the bedding for the cattle is one of the most satisfying parts of the caddle!! I'm like, I want to camp out in the bedding with the cattle!!!! Luv it!!😊
I love hearing the tractor work hard. You are so right on the time, need and reason for plowing. Thanks for explaining to others. Great article too.thanks Pete and Hilarie.
Pete, you're podcast is a refreshing anti-anxiety moment in my life. I immediately always click in on as opposed to 97% of the garbage I view on TH-cam. Keep up the wonderful work!!!
I agree with you 100%. Pete's voice is so easy to listen to because we all know that he talks sense. If I'm feeling anxious, I always watch a video from him and Hilarie. Best wishes from Ireland.
There's something satisfying about watching a farmer and his old Farmall plow a new field into compost. Looking forward to watching this new grazing/hayfield? grow to productivity!
Interesting comment ....... I was thinking the same thing about the smell of the dirt as it was rolling over ....... country Australia .... believe it or not my name is Mark too !!!!!!!! ..... great minds .....!
I am surprised at how well the 756 handled the 3 bottom plow ! she hunkered down and really did the work ! a 3 bottom plow is very hard to pull ! most arm chair farmers don't know that ! that is why you don't see really big plows on small farm operations ! they couldn't pull them with the tractors they have I had a single bottom plow for my Henry Ferguson T0-20 and it was all it could do to just pull it ! a harrow is a completely different animal.... they do not go very deep at all but a bottom plow does and it takes more Horse power to do that ! I can't wait to see the 856 going back together ! I know your excited about the new big shop ! I would be too ! that's gott'a be a dream come true after all the years in the tiny shop ! it's good on ya Pete ! go for it !!!!!
I just love to watch you work the farm. Plowing, field management, heard managing, using various tools and tractors to re rebuilding equipment and infrastructure. From that pile of steel that was just rusting away to the finished plow returning back to useful work. Thank you for the hours of information and entertainment you give.
The only thing better than turning the soil is making hay. I miss the farm life. I spent more years serving this great nation than I did farming. I loved every minute of it. Love your channel.
Pete, there is something really satisfying to me, to get the plow and speed set so the rounds lay in to make a level field. As someone who has made it to my mid seventies, it make me happy to see you bring this old equipment back to life! Thanks to Just A Few Acres for providing a few minutes pleasure when I come in to rest from working too hard outside!!
There you go again. Love watching you guys working the cattle, plowing the field. But you always end up at the end making me hungry. God bless you guys. As always enjoy watching you work on your farm.
Pete ty for explaining all you were doing and why you were doing it I love that your not held to a box that u think out side and find the answer that best helps your live stock just a fantastic job you and Hillary are doing god bless you and your family
It's so satisfying to see that "vintage" equipment working hard again. Watching you lay the sod over is very cathartic and I could watch this for hours......or until my wife has another project for me;-)
I am typically a silent viewer. I came here originally when you made a video on your house renovation. I stay because I enjoy the variety that you have. I truely enjoy watching you do the many and varied jobs that need to be done on a farm. I can not imagine people complaining when you move from your more "outside" chores to your "indoor" hobbies. I remember one time you said "if it's not your thing, you don't have to watch it" (or something similar). It made me laugh. While I don't watch every one of the machinery videos and while I don't always know the jargon, I really enjoy watching what you do and hearing the why. It is very interesting to me. I love watching you fix up and using the older machinery. You do an awesome job in all you do. Thank you for putting up with youtube issues and for continuing your channel. Best wishes.
Please take this as a sincere compliment, but you've got that Bob Ross effect going on. Very calm and relaxing tone and cadence. I dunno how many times I've watched one of your episodes and just dozed off and had to watch it again lol. Of all the farmers I've ever known, worked with or follow on TH-cam, by all appearances you seem to be the kindest and gentlest of them all.
Hilarie needs a bowl of popcorn along with her throne and view😊 Yah that old girl (the 756) is really working hard. I'll bet your dad is thoroughly enjoying hearing the 756 and plow going thru the ground😊 I'd be sitting in a chair next to Hilarie watching you plow, so relaxing!! I've also got to remember to bring dessert when you're grilling dinner!!😊😊
I always plowed top of boot depth in the fall, spring it works up like a garden. You're correct. In explaining the process. Dad told me 16 " bottom you plow 8 " deep , half the depth of your bottom size.
I love watching the plow as it comes around for a new pass, where it plops down and starts digging in. Was wondering what the plan was and now going to look forward to seeing the rebirth of the field in time. Also hoping the drainage project in the winter pasture performs for you, the amount of planning involved in making all that work was awesome.
The cattle were ready to go into the barn, that's their winter safety zone! I like the plowing, did a good job. Sounds like you have a nice plan for the projects. I look forward to the International truck refurbishing, good luck. I hope you have a good week!
Pete, you are the most 'gentle' gentleman, the connection you have with Hillary, and machines, and the earth and animals is something wholesome and good.
Pete you've got that field looking good for winter. Cattle all look great. I'm excited about the new work shop in the future. You guys take care of each other. Thanks for sharing! KC
Thanks for the video. It's always so relaxing to take a trip to the farm. You are a great steward and the land. I feel you are a blessing from God, and I am blessed by the content you have. Take care and I'll see you later.
The sound that 756 makes is like music to someone that loves the old tractors
Especially under load of the plow...
The sound of that engine under load gives me goose bumps! It is one of the most unique and wonderful sounds in the world!
Older equipment just has a unique sound that newer equipment doesn't have.
Real people. I really enjoy watching your videos. I hope everyone, especially my channel’s viewers, has a great weekend
❤❤
❤❤
The mischievous giggle putting red paint on the green plow was classic. :)
I heard that too and smiled. I knew what he was doing.
There is nothing like a fresh plowed field especially when you can get an aerial view from a drone
"Nothing runs like a Deere!' LOL, nice work restoring a good plow! Thanks for sharing it all.
Nothing runs like a Deere, or smells more like a John!
The art of a great storyteller is to make the ordinary fascinating, and you succeed admirably.

@@gasmancg I heard Pete chuckle as he did it, but verbally and internally. He’s a hoot, most times.
Early start on Christmas decorations😂
I chuckled and said it's red
It was his grandfather’s plow he said so it’s got some sentimental value to it
It matches his red John Deere hay wagon
Don't you just love the way the plow rolls the ground over! Fond memories on a cool fall day.
It looks like waves behind a boat to me.. Love it
An old farmer friend of mine said, "The worst Fall plowing is better than the best Spring plowing". Guess that's your philosophy, too.

Moldboard Plowing is definitely an artform that takes time to master.
Great Video. Hey Hillary, always nice to see the boss supervising her hardest worker!
Thank you for explaining common farming tasks in a way that a nonfarmer understands and appreciates!! Another awesome video!! Thank you!
That tractor sure does purr nice you do a great job restoring your equipment
It takes a man of a tractor to pull a 3 bottom plow and even a bigger man to run the farm ,love the views keep on farming Pete.
The Hilary and Pete interactions are my favorite content!
The new shop will be a great video series! Can’t wait for that to start.
The sound that 756 makes is like music to someone that loves the old tractors as always another great video. Thank you for letting us share.
Ezra always manages to get the cameo.
As always, Pete, your videos are so entertaining and informative. I learned more about plow adjustments and plowing than I ever thought I knew before. That was so kind of you to provide Hilarie with a throne from which to observe your labors. Enjoyed it as always. Thanks.

Hillary seems to be the perfect helpmate for you Pete. You two make a great team!

Great video. The old plow did a good job. Tractor ran good The plow master too. Thanks
Pete and Hillary am so amazed at how you both compliment each other. Thank you for your channel, every time I see it ,reminds me of my youth!
Pete really appreciated your explanation of the value of plowing your field 👏
Pete, you're podcast is a refreshing anti-anxiety moment in my life. I immediately always click in on as opposed to 97% of the garbage I view on TH-cam. Keep up the wonderful work!!!
I agree with you 100%. Pete's voice is so easy to listen to because we all know that he talks sense. If I'm feeling anxious, I always watch a video from him and Hilarie. Best wishes from Ireland.
Thanks for telling us why you're plowing. I thought I'd missed that explanation, and I knew there was one.
There's something satisfying about watching a farmer and his old Farmall plow a new field into compost. Looking forward to watching this new grazing/hayfield? grow to productivity!
Boy, Pete, I never knew there was so much involved in getting the plow right. Very interesting.
I can smell the dirt as your plowing 😁. Wonderful memories as a young man plowing on my uncle’s farm . Great video Pete . Thank you and God Bless
Interesting comment ....... I was thinking the same thing about the smell of the dirt as it was rolling over ....... country Australia .... believe it or not my name is Mark too !!!!!!!! ..... great minds .....!
I learn a lot from your videos Pete. I even learned how to barbecue properly. Thanks for all your effort. Much appreciated.
Thank you Pete and Hillary, love your videos.
Thank you Pete , I truly joy watching you run the older equipment it brings back memories of the good old days .
Yah Pete, You are OUTSTANDING in the field! I remember plowing when I was growing up! This would be back in the late sixties! Gosh I'm old!
Thanks for explaining what you’re doing and why. I learn something every time I watch your podcasts. Keep on you’re doing great.
I miss plowing, just something about it is so satisfying and relaxing
I have always liked to watch the transition ploughing grass fields.
Love watching your videos. I always learn something the way you explain things
I love the sound of that engine when she’s working hard!
...."dinner with my family" makes a world of difference !!!
Finding a flat rock in your field. I think it's a great name for your new pasture. FLAT ROCK.
Thank you so much for sharing your day.
I loved how those 3 bottoms bit so nicely, into that sod.
God bless you guys,
Ted and Patti, in NJ

Was hoping for a Kettle-Side-Chat but Tractor-Side-Talk was just as enjoyable. Glad weather is still the farms friend. Be safe. 👍👍👍
Watching you plow made for a nice relaxing Sunday morning. Thank you.
Thanks Pete and Hillary for another Relaxing Sunday morning video. Peace

Great video. Thank you for the earth lesson on decomposing.
I could listen to that 756 working all day long. Pure IH music!!!

Wow! I'm learning so much. Ploughing turns into a lesson of soil preparation. Brilliant 👏

Looking forward to the New Year and may it bring peace and prosperity through the blessings of our Lord.

To this time of sadness and uncertainty it was quite a relief just to watch this.
Thank You Pete. Great Video.

Cycles of farming life. Can't wait for your fan club to see it tomorrow!
Pragmatism for the win! Really looking forward to following along this winter. All of your projects sound like great fun. Thanks for sharing.
I just ❤ your setup.
Great again - thanks for explaining why you ploughed the field - more great feed for more great cattle!
