- In this disturbing true crime video Kevin Hicks delves into the tale of the murder of 14-year-old Mary Clifford by midwife Elizabeth Brownrigg. Brownrigg was a notorious figure in 18th century London, infamous for her heinous acts of cruelty towards her servants. In a haunting recount of a dark chapter in 18th century London the story unravels the gruesome details of Brownrigg's heinous acts of violence and reveals the depths of human depravity that lurk within seemingly ordinary facades.

Mary clifford. Mary mitchell. Mary jones. Thanks for naming the victims.
Any Marys should watch out.
I was about to ask for clarification. Ty!
bruh they really weren't very imaginative on names huh lol... Mary, Elizabeth, William, Jack.... THATS IT lol
@@robcanisto8635 You do know when this took place right? Time periods and certain countries reflect popular names at the time.
@@sergeantbrother6940it’s a history channel. Everything happened 250 years ago. You Been smoking a little bit to mutch Mary Jane.
I’m just so viscerally disgusted by cowardice. The men who were told what was happening and failed to intervene and the men on the second jury deserve nothing but shame.
Shame on the men? Surely shame on that evil woman. Or does it agitate you that the main perpetrator was female. Feminists oh dear.
Happens today too if the offender is an influential politician. He just buys his version of truth. Unfortunately everybody has a price.
Men were simping harder then than they are now.
I mean what exactly do we think is happening RIGHT NOW?!? We live in a world controlled by men, which has effectively groomed entire generations of young girls into being sex workers today. Grown men in their forties and fifties (all the way up to a hundred) who are happy to consume their "content", while pretending to be faithful and devoted, fathers and husbands!😂 This is WHAT men are. Disgusting and predatory. If history tells us anything at all... it's that men in general should not have power of women of any age, as they will always abuse that power.
I was getting molested by my mom growing up. Im a woman. My dad didnt take it seriously and neither did law enforcement. A lot of men unfortunately dont take woman on girl abuse as seriously as they do when its a male perpetrator due to the strength difference between women and men. I had assumed with people being more strict in the days of antiquity, that this problem was only a new one. I guess not
Thank you for your compassion, even for a poor girl murdered 250-years ago.
Still happens in some countries
@@nuzhatmuhammad4516
It happens in every country
I mean it is currently happening in every society that includes men.

after the first girl went to the hospital and told what was going on, how did they allow them to keep anymore girls? So disgusting that someone can be so cruel.
Good ol civilization.
Men... it is always just men.
Still happens in Canada , Europe and all around the world . Sad but true.
@@sarahalderman3126Interesting that a woman was one of the persons doing the most abuse.
@@TkT8PR I mean… sure. Congrats on the observation? All the countless men within the chain and systems that could’ve helped or prevented this from happening, even doing something as small as investigating this girls stories completely slipped the minds of all of them
This was devastatingly sad, but the story of these girls needs to be heard and remembered
It's terrifying the depths of cruelty the human race can descend to. You have to wonder how many folks young and old throughout time were silenced and no justice was ever served. Kevin thanks again for the education and sharing these sobering historic events.
I don't understand it either. I never finished this video but I still get Notifs. Good people comment here.
They may have gotten away with it in life, but they paid the price in Hell.

I’ve never been able to get it. Reminds me of what happened on October 7th last year. 😢
I believe they are often referred to as ghosts. 😢
This “family” was pure evil. Beyond evil. This is of the most sickening stories I’ve ever heard. The lodger, the neighbors, the apprentices, etc. also deserve condemnation as well for doing absolutely nothing.
Democrats.
An entire family of sadists.
What do you mean the neighbors did nothing? In the video it said they stopped it happening.
I'm speechless that a mother and father could be so heartless towards children. Thank you for speaking these young girls names.
Unfortunately, modernity is perfectly capable of creating monsters with human faces.
Why? The girls weren't their children. Also it makes no sense to be speechless regarding this when the brutalities of slavery even towards children, for example are known. The fact that these girls weren't enslaved or non European makes no difference. They were members of an underclass and therefore in the minds of psychopaths, worthless.
@@ginnyanntonick Modernity? So the ritual human sacrifice found in almost all pre-Christian pagan religions is a product of "modernity"? You should try learning history without bias.
@@CandiceGoddard 🤣
@@CandiceGoddardperhaps she is hoping for better behavior from supposedly civilized Christians, which is what they were supposed to be. That they behaved worse than ancient pagans makes it even worse.
The brutality of the entire family is almost beyond belief. I wonder how the surviving girls fared in their lives after they were removed from their torture. Thank you for the story. Cheers from Texas.
Hi David, yes I wondered that and tried to find out but there's nothing out there. I just hope they managed to find some happiness in their subsequent lives.
Have a good weekend 👍🏻
Mary Mitchell and Mary Jones might have wanted this horror to be forgotten. Still seems weird that there was no record of them afterwards. Could they have changed names at that time due to the crimes against them?
@@deed5811 It's not weird. They were members of the lowest social class and probably illiterate as mentioned in the video so unable to record their own histories. There's absolutely no mention of MOST people from the same socio-economic class and even though the girls escaped, it doesn't mean that anyone would have particularly helped them and made a record of their lives because quite frankly what would have been more interesting in the case would be the gory details and the motives of the killers.
When I was at uni studying archaeology the first thing we were taught was to not interpret the past according to our own standards or morals, but try to get into the mindset of the people at that time. With all due respect, people like you seem to have a very delusional interpretation of history. These people were socio-economically beneath most domestic servants in a medium to large sized household and atrocities like this were not rare.
In the same time period, which was the early industrial period btw, lots of poor families sold their children into apprenticeships knowing that many would not survive their teens. There are stories about how teenagers died being ground up in early machinery or having their limbs torn off. Old people who could no longer work would commit suicide so as not to be a burden and mothers who were out breast feeding rich women's children would enrol their own babies in death lotteries, hoping the children would die as the pay out was sometimes more than their yearly salary.
No record??? None!! I want to know more about them. @@thehistorysquad
@@deed5811 They're very common names, and there was no paperwork other than church records for most people.
Dear God, the poor Girls. The cruelty of some People know no bounds 🤔🤨😔
The Brownrigg's weren't people, they were monsters.
The really sad thing is that something like this has or is probably happening right now somewhere in the US or the world.
Yes God was responsible and acted through the hands of the murderer as usual.

Those poor girls. It is crazy there are such wicked individuals amongst us
Only keep three of 16 🤔
The beginning of this story was too 😮 horrific to listening to the end for me.
Close our borders.
Interesting statement. I live in Texas, and we just want to follow basic border protocal that the fed gov won't let us do! Without borders and citizenship, there is no country really! I think that is what "those people" in power are doing! UGH...
I am very sad to say this happens just as much today. I work in social services and see this all the time. I would love to get my hands on the people who do this. Thank you for your channel
Thank you for doing this thankless and difficult job! ❤
Yea, inequity in society is unfortunately still very prevalent. But, at least there are people like you 😊
People like those in this story make me wsh Tyburn were still in operation.
If you see this all the time then why haven't you reported it to the police? More rubbish coming from the direction of social services.
@@bustestlucloc4630 we do, thought that was obvious
Husband and son literally getting away with murder, and just six months for assault - incredible.
But the people who originally just wrote that letter of complaint have to be blamed too, they basically just washed thier hands of all responsibility even though they knew there was still at least one other girl there.
Makes you wonder about the loss of all those children of their own. Were they innocent of those deaths and it all caused them to lose their minds (especially her), or did one or both of them have a hand in the deaths? What an awful and atrocious, sad and devastating story. -- Thank you, sir, for all you do!
For her story, hundreds went unnoticed.
Horrifying. This is really the worst side of humanity.
You know somethings abominably brutal when even 1760’s Londoners go, “Damn wtf?”
...the veneer of civilization is VERY THIN...! 😢😱
I was anxious about something unrelated when I started watching this video but having finished it now I've realized that my problems are really pretty small and not worth worrying about. God, what a horrific story.
God cares no matter how small it is. Tell Him anyway.
Thank you for telling this story, and bless you for reminding all of us that it is the victims who should be remembered. They were but children......
I have heard about this case from the tv serious "Deadly Women" a truly horrific case. RIP Mary Clifford, Mary Mitchell and Mary Jones.
Yup

Not only did London have "the great stench" going on, but also the huge homeless population..... London was indeed a dark place
Soon to be again, thanks to voting for liberals.
The girls are no longer lost to history as their story was told and many heard it and mourned for them. Thank you!
Thank you for your wonderful videos. I recently had a baby, and during that tender newborn first month, I watched your videos while I stayed up to comfort her. You made the nights less lonely and scary! My heart aches for those young girls, I can't even stomach the idea of such happening to my own daughter.
Imagine how much abuse went on that didn't get discovered because it wasn't as severe.
You’re presentations are so important and a lot of people would rather not hear about how we all got here! Thanks for helping us remember these people existed.
You hear so many horrible stories you start to become desensitised to it, but this really brought home how cruel some people can be. The sadistic nature of the cruelty is so horrendous. Thank you for sharing their story x
I'm only halfway through this video, and my heart is breaking for these poor girls. Thank you for teaching me something about the past, and how the poor were treated by the more fortunate. I'm going to steel myselfand watch the rest of the video now.Thank you very much for posting sir
You are so welcome.
Thank you for sharing their story. Poor girls… People can be so cruel.
Mary Clifford not lost to history now thanks to you Kev. and we are glad. As terrible of a story as Mary's was it would not surprise me if something like this is happening today!
Of course this is the old copper in me coming out! Thanks for this grisly tale Kev.
Indeed, but sadly it is still happening today. If I understand correctly a gang in Scotland has just been brought to justice for similar cruelties against children.
Similar things have happened in more recent times, two in particular comes to mind - Sylvia Likens in the US and another one from Japan called Junko Furuta.
In Britain there have been a couple of cases such as the murder of Suzanne Cooper.
@@steves1015The Sylvia Likens story is absolutely horrific. I think group psychosis is at play in these types of murders
This reminds me of the much more recent case of Sylvia Likens. She was an American teenager who was tortured and murdered by her caregiver, Gertrude Baniszewski and her children.
Too little too late. Poor wee lass. This is terrible. Such entitlement! Well told, as always, good sir, you break my heart.
A much sad and depressing event Kevin, well told and a superb, the cruelty of what some people are capable of (And still do) is beyond normal comprehension. Many thanks. 👏
As former police officers in large metropolitan cities we have both seen the horrible things people will do to one another.
This is one of the most horrific cases I've heard. Those ladies shouldn't have had that happen to them. No idea what could make a whole family think to do anything remotely close to this stuff!
Their brutality was absolutely horrific. Thank you for keeping their names alive!
Wow.. sounds like Elizabeth had some serious psychological issues after losing 13 out of 16 children.. she should not have been allowed to oversee those kids. Crazy to think how things used to be. On a lighter note, it’s always a good day when you upload, Kevin! Cheers!
Did she lose them or kill them?
@@bas4903 oohhh good question! I hope she didn’t kill them but I wouldn’t put it past her with the way she acted.
Hi Kevin, another brilliant video despite the horrific crimes committed by Elizabeth, James and John Brownrigg and the unimaginable suffering of those poor girls. I’m from Wiltshire and I know there it’s lots of History here and I’m sure many fascinating stories connected to the county. Do you know of any in particular that jump out?
@@T-ChillSilverandSuch
That's a frightening thought. Perhaps she did lose them as child mortality was higher in 18th century London.
Though it's possible that some died of neglect or even intentional foul play.
Yes this is due to the abuse she experienced at the hands of the men around her. This is what abuse can do to a person.
A very gruesome tale of this foul family and unfortunate girls. Such a shame the male perpetrators got away with such a light sentence.
Your research and gripping tale telling are second to non, thank you Kevin 🙏
Cheers Nick 👍🏻
It is an incredible shame that these predators have ALWAYS gotten away with the countless atrocities that they continue to commit against girls and women.
Greetings once again from Nova Scotia, thank you for a somewhat darker tale. We are capable of such terrible actions, it never ceases to amaze me how evil some are, no grasp of right and wrong. The more I learn about humanity, the more I love my dog... Be safe and as always, best regards. Arthur
Thank you, William, for speaking up. By then it was too late, but he saw the horrors and actually said something to try and help.
Phenomenal video you did and how wonderful you are to acknowledge those poor girls.
Such a vivid account, I don't think I'll forget those poor girls. Thank you for yet another mind expanding session; honestly don't know how you do it, and thank goodness you do!!
You know, I'm an agnostic - but if it means that nameless monster has been screaming in agony in the depths of hell for the last 257 years, I will gladly believe. And if it means that Mary Clifford, Mary Jones, and Mary Mitchell, a young woman with more courage in her bones than a million men, are now somewhere in a peaceful, contented place, perhaps reading, chatting idly together and basking in the spring sunshine - then I will believe in a heartbeat.
I agree. I'm a pagan, and it's because of monsters like this that I do believe in Hell.
So, you will believe in God, if it means there is a hell for bad people to suffer in?
That makes no sense. Whether or not you like something doesn’t make it more or less real.
You believe in something because you believe, not because it suits you.
Also, I would hope the idea that your loved ones could be in Paradise would be more motivational than people you’ve never met suffering.
You scare me, sir
This is one of the problems I have with Christianity.
The idea that someone can commit crimes for a maximum of about 70 years, and (compared to what Hell is supposed to be like) have a limited human level of cruelty, yet the perpetrators are then condemned to unimaginable horror for *eternity*!
And then many folk will think this is just?!
Wow... Just wow...
Tbh with a heart like that, I would wonder if you would be likely to join them....
@@steves1015...you need to read and understand what sin is and why Christ came. It's completely logical.
How can people be so unbelievably cruel to another...especially children. I truly cannot comprehend.
Thank you for covering this!!
I’ve read about this crime, but you were so good at bringing the awfulness to reality
This is awful...that entire family hated those girls...
Not to this extent, a couple of my foster brothers suffered greatly at the hands of their guardians. Heartbreaking that abuse like this still happens.
Great video
The abject poverty in London in the 18th and 19th centuries is horrific. I’m almost surprised it took as long as it did for the labor movement to catch on
There were multiple attempts over the centuries to improve English society by reorganising it, from the Peasants' Revolt, through to the Levellers, and on to the unionist movement inspired by the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Power is never surrendered willingly. The conscienceless few are rarely reluctant to abuse the principled many.
I think the lack of action is due to many things. There was so much abuse of the young people in the situation as we have heard of. People who were aware of "groans and screaming" could not do anything of their own accord. The workhouse and constable had to be fetched and even then victims were hidden and perpetrators escaped. Like the countries populated by hundreds of millions of people no one sees the ones that go missing.
I normally don’t comment, but this was one of the harder videos to listen to. Not because it is in anyway boring or dull; but because of the sheer disgust I felt towards this family’s actions and how unjust the punishments towards the males in the family felt.
Though I did smirk when Elizabeth got her due and the manner in which she received it in full.
I had never heard of this dark tale before today, and I thank you for shedding light on it, Kevin.
Kevin how in the world do you find these stories? You bring them to life!
You always tell the stories of the victims with great humanity. Thank you for that. And for not leaving out the gory details. They really do matter!. All the best.
Once more you pushed back the limits of horror! We are beyond madness here. Good story as usual.
God bless you for the compassion you showed for those girls. May they rest in peace.
It was such a harrowing and tragic story, yet at the same time an epic one! Well researched and well told!

Thank you Mr. Hicks for your excellent stories, sir.
Thank you MR. Hicks. These sorts of historical stories and the analysis that you give them are wonderful, even if the subject matter is horrific. You do such a great job not only contextualizing them, but you give everything a reasonable weight and do not sensationalize parts that many others here on YT would. I also echo the sentiment from another commenter by saying thank you for naming and validating the victims. Kudos for all your videos and thank you!

Very well done on this heart rending tale, how many possible similar cases were there over the years we can only surmise! RIP to the dear innocents.
I’m glad you brought that point up about the poor girls, the victims, being largely forgotten! That is the sad truth in most cases and it should be the other way around!
Shit. I don’t know if I can make it through this one. I used to be a substitute teacher and I loved working with kids 13-15. Just a kid. STILL A CHILD. I don’t care the child marriage traditions and girls becoming moms at young ages. They’re children.
Thank you so goddamn much for your continued dedicating to remembering and honoring the very humanity of these girls. Just girls. Not even young women yet. Girls.
It was tough doing the research for sure.
@@thehistorysquadexactly. No wonder the "mother" went along with this predator. She was groomed and abused mercilessly and had to "help" or be treated in the same manner. Basically the story or plight of women all throughout history.
I remember this case from when I first found it in middle school. It's one of my favorites and while it's an incredibly sad and tragic case and I agree that we as a society seem to remember the perpetrators themselves more so than the victims and it really isn't fair and it feels incredibly unjust, I can't help but see a silver lining to that. I didn't recognize Elizabeth Brownrigg when I clicked this video and heard her name, but I recognized Mary Clifford immediately then Mary Mitchell and Mary Jones right after. Only then did I remember Elizabeth. While it's not good enough at any level, I can't help but think about others like me who don't remember Elizabeth Brownrigg, but the girls themselves. Even if it's just Mary Clifford. One is better than none and infinitely better than only remembering their tormentor and, in Mary Clifford's case, murderer.
Yes, it's interesting. We gave quite some consideration to the title, but ended up having to use brownrigg unfortunately, because the keywords ranked much higher than Mary Clifford 😏
This type of torture exist today, with police, international laws, child protective services, imagine back then? Where none of those existed? Imagine the number of inhuman behavior humans must have had?
That family were nothing short of cowards. Truly a heartbreaking story. I hope Elizabeth’s ghost watched the dissection.
Reminds me of the Sylvia Likens case in America in the 50s/60s. Times change but people don't. Absolutely horrific. Thank you for the video, though. Is there any info on the surviving girl's life after?
Sadly not, I did some digging but couldn’t find anything, as I said they were largely lost to time 😕
Yes! Reminded me of Sylvia Likens too. People talk about the brutal olden days, but has anything changed?
The murder of Mary Clifford and the other cruel actions done to her before she died was a case for the death penalty for Elizabeth Brownrigg!
From what I’ve learned about old England… it was the nastiest, most filthy place to be back then.
