William Marshall was remarkable for his loyalty and keeping his word. His faithfulness in all his duties made him a amazing person when all around people were always thinking of their own interest. I think he really loved his wife Isabel of Clare. In a time when knights were practicing courtly love were "the lady of your courtship" was never your wife and most wealthy men had mistresses, he seems to have kept his marriage vows towards Isabel like he kept his oath to the kings he served. He had five boys and five girls. Isabel of Clare was an intelligent woman and some official papers of his estate declare something like " I do this... with the consel of my wife Isabel".
After 25 years of research and many dollars in books, I've found that William Marshal, by way of his daughters is my 25th Great Grandfather. The answer to the question "Who would you like to meet" of course, my answer is William Marshal. I did enjoy that history lesson, thank you, Kevin.
Wow, what amazing stock you come from. It would have to be through one of his daughters line as sadly his sons all died without heirs, so there's no direct decedents through the male line. Isabel died a year after her husband.
He will be your grandfather by many other routes of descent as well. And mine. At 25 generations you have over 3 billion grandparents- many many times the world population in William's time, so most of those ancestors are doubling up, and anyone who had children back then is almost certainly your ancestor, unless your ancestry is completely non-European. We can all proudly claim descendency from the Marshal many times over, but well done for finding the precise route of yours.
My grandchildren’s 25th grandfather is also William Marshal 👍 through my daughter-in-laws family line. Yes, William Marshal’s wife comes from a prestigious Irish family. A descendant of Bruce (Patrick Stewart) came to America, then his descendants fought in the Revolutionary War. We’re still American. How do you trace your family line?

What I love the most about the Middle Ages was their understanding of honor, oaths, and loyalty. El Cid was exiled repeatedly by his own king but he was always there to fight for Alfonso and Castille when they were in danger. Even when he founded his own principaity, he did so in the name of his king. That's simply incredible and I don't know of many modern senators or politicians who would go to such lengths to serve their presidents. But that's what these knights did. Serve. And that is something we have completely forgotten in today's world. To quote a little line from Moby Dick, what man isn't a slave? The loyalty that William felt to his kings, England, and to his oath are legendary. He absolutely deserved to be welcomed as a brother of the Knights Templar. In peace, rest, William Marshall

I believe that William Marshall was held captive for a pretty long time when him and his Uncle were ambushed and his leg was impaled by a lance. Like, for a little over a year. He is incredibly lucky that wound didnt kill him. It was said that a yard of the lance was driven thru his thigh. You would think that since they were ransoming him that they would have allowed the mistress of the home they stopped at to care for that wound. Cant get much of a ransom for a dead knight. As a former combat medic, i gotta say that it cannot be overstated how serious a wound like that really is, and back then in 12th century could have very easily been a death sentence, even with the best care and treatment. The luck he had to not only not lose the leg, but survive the injury is just an absolute miracle.

Howdy and hello Kevin, There is one minor detail you left out and that is when William was dying he asked the ladies of his court to sing him a song. The tears were streaming down their faces and not any doubt there voices were choked with emotion and so they do what they can for William. The ladies sing him a song while life ebbs from his body.
Amazing, Sir William is my 22nd great grandfather. Love finding out about my very distant relatives. I often wonder why we wound up in the British Colonies back in the early 1600’s and to Texas in the 1800’s. My dream is to come to England one day and see the graves and places my ancestors came from. Wonderful as always.
Kevin I’m ecstatic that you made this video! William Marshal is one of my historical figures, and I finished reading The Greatest Knight by Thomas Asbridge not too long before you uploaded this - what an incredible person and life that he lived! Looking forward to whatever you make next!
An excellent review of the actions of “the greatest knight”. Men like him must have been very tough buggers and loyal to their oaths of fidelity. Good to see that you expanded the episode to give rein to his story.
In the days of silent film, a stunt man was supposed to be launched from a trebuchet into a safety net. He wouldn't do it...not until they tested the launch with an equal weight sandbag. The sand bag flew many yards past the safety net and crashed through the roof of a rather distant studio.
I have enjoyed every one of your videos that I have seen so far but particularly enjoyed this one, as a Marshall descendant myself. I am proud to bear the name. When I was a student in London in the early 1970's, I remember seeing his tomb at the Templar's church and suddenly feeling a great sense of obligation to never dishonour the name or to let those down who might place their trust in me. My own immediate ancestors came Stateside in the 18th Century and other relations ended up in India and Australia, so we are spread rather widely now! Thanks for all the effort you put into making these wonderful story telling sessions and for bringing history alive so vividly.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. I just wish history in schools was taught so well and with such enthusiasm. There is one minor detail you left out and that is when William was dying he asked the ladies of his court to sing him a song.
Yeah, over 1 hour of the History Squad. Thank you Kevin, very interesting.
Our pleasure!
Kevin I’m ecstatic that you made this video! William Marshal is one of my historical figures, and I finished reading The Greatest Knight by Thomas Asbridge not too long before you uploaded this - what an incredible person and life that he lived! Looking forward to whatever you make next!
Thanks Kevin for making this. William Marshal is generally an ancillary character in movies about King Henry II . Learned a lot.
I think your enthusiasm makes these videos 10 times better.
Also starts singing "Henry the 8th I am song *
"*
Thanks 👍
Once again, excellent presentation! Thank you, Kevin!
Thanks for sharing the history of William Marshal. Sounds as if he led a extraordinary life which I enjoyed learning from your sharing.
An excellent review of the actions of “the greatest knight”. Men like him must have been very tough buggers and loyal to their oaths of fidelity. Good to see that you expanded the episode to give rein to his story.
Thanks, there were many rabbit holes to go down 😜
I can see so much of the inspiration for Game of Thrones in the life and times of William Marshal. Great video, I was hooked
In the days of silent film, a stunt man was supposed to be launched from a trebuchet into a safety net. He wouldn't do it...not until they tested the launch with an equal weight sandbag.
The sand bag flew many yards past the safety net and crashed through the roof of a rather distant studio.
Wow 😮
Excellent epic Kevin. Thanks a lot keep well.🏴🇬🇧
I have enjoyed every one of your videos that I have seen so far but particularly enjoyed this one, as a Marshall descendant myself.
What a lovely comment, thank you.
William Marshall, Earl of Penbroke, et al. One of the most interesting of men, from the medieval times, and one man who truly meets the definition of noble.
Bard Kevin, thank you telling such a most excellent story. One which you share with much enthusiasm, respect, and reverence!!
Glad you enjoyed it, 👍
What a wonderful video. Kevin, you are a star in the way you convert history along with your enthusiasm and knowledge. Many thanks as ever.
Thankyou Kevin for another great presentation on our common history. William Marshall was quite the man; strong and honourable. A lesson to any man today in these strange times.
I very much enjoyed your program about William Marshall. It was great Kev. Even the hanging at the start of 5 year old William.. you are quite the builder!
😜
@thehistorysquad I was very serious Kev. My wife is related and always calls him William The Marshall. Ever heard that name used?
Morning Buzz.
The boys body would have gone flying to his father, headless.
"The Good Old Days"
Regards England
Thanks for this David. I think I figured that part out!@DavidImpatief
Thank you Kevin for this wonderfull video, learned alot today
Glad to hear it!
I laughed so hard at the trebuchet model. Fantastic!
😜
William Marshall has been a hero of mine for many years. A remarkable man. 😊
Wonderful!
Brilliant
Perhaps the best storyteller on TH-cam! ❤❤
I’m seeing this video now. I don’t know anything about history but this story of Sir William. He truly lived a knights life 😭
Last time I was this early Ælfred was just O.K.
Thank you for this. Makes me want to play “Kingdom Come deliverance.”
Hi Jacob, thanks for the SUPER, I believe there’s a sequel to Kingdom Come Deliverance coming soon. 👍
What a great subject I throughly enjoyed this.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. I just wish history in schools was taught so well and with such enthusiasm. At 57, having had 3 children and worked in both the primary and secondary education areas, I’ve plenty of experience of exceedingly boring history. History that taught you nothing as the student.
Thank you😀
Glad you enjoyed it! And I agree with you, I have worked in education, as an educator but never a teacher. 👍
Gosh, that was a long one, but worth every minute! You really have a talent for making history come to life.
This is the stuff of legend. I am amazed that a knight could have such honour
Lovely Saturday treat, thanks Kev!
I love history!! I don't understand why they keep remaking. The same movies over and over and over when our history is more exciting and interesting
Absolutely 👍
Brilliant presentation 👏 enjoyed very much 👏
Kevin, Kevin, Kevin! I have been waiting for you to cover William Marshal. So brilliant! Thank you so much.
So well done sir!
Brooo that is a lovely sword and what a demonstration of her steel song!
Thats was REALLY excellent! I just recently learned about William Marshal so I was excited to see this upload. Thank you!
Oh, my goodness...
What a crazy live William Marshal had.
And you are a real storyteller.😊
I enjoy all your videos, but this is one of my favorites.
Thank you so much for reinacting this fantastic story about this true legend of a man which I requested eons ago. How no-one has not made a film about William Marshall is beyond me! Keep up the good work and more power to your elbow mate 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks.
Fantastic storytelling!!
Interesting and informative. 👍🏻
Brilliant, Kevin! So very well done. Thank you.
I think I would most like to meet Mr. Hicks.
Many thanks!
