Here is an early pre-release live version of “Fly Like An Eagle” from Don Kirshner's Rock Concert recorded in 1973, three years before it was released. Watch this spot for updates.

Love watching Steve Miller live
As a guitarist. That Bass Player is fire
If Steve Miller said he was going to play Fly Like an Eagle today, the crowd would go Crazy. Those people hardly reacted because they hadn't heard the song yet. What a Treat.
None of them knew they’d hear this song for the rest of their life on any rock radio station. What a bunch of lucky mfs
They was higher than giraffe balls
They also heard it differently than any other f****** version
Decent music
Llllll
This song is so relevant even more today. The Steve Miller Band is a musical force that deserves much praise for all their great work and it still continues.
He and the band were into melody, he has a great voice, this doesn't date.
Yeah, everybody is a communist now. France elected an Antifa spokesperson into office. So, I guess you can see how well that will turn out. The head Rabbi has already told the Jewish people they have "no future" in France.
Yessss
There will never be music like this again. Masterpiece
Agreed. Might as well invent a time machine and time travel back to the 70s
Let's go ! This age sucks
@@jshelley4592Totally agreed!
Band #175 on Amazon Music. I can't imagine 174 bands are better than the Steve Miller Band. I don't like listing musicians or bands like that. It's anti Art. Art is what YOU prefer, a list tells you what you prefer.
The song hadn’t even been structured yet! 😊😊. So great. When they eventually recorded it they put a great version together! Steve Miller, a road paver in music.
A jonesy, isn't it great. Listen to the bass lines. This is a fantastic song. This is for eternity.
He even changed the lyrics. "time keeps on slip´n slip´n slip´n into the future" for example.
Miller was peaking with creativity at this time. He recorded two brilliant albums back to back! Fly like an Eagle and Book of Dreams. Which are the basis of his Greatest Hits CD. Great Songs! Classic Rock!
Didn't you like 'Recall The Beginning'...?
@@jospinvanraat8730 I don’t have that one.
It's 'The Stake' for me...may be his greatest guitar work ever! Would not have been possible without slinkies!❤
Steve Miller was a favorite when I first got into music! Fly, and Book of Dreams were favorites! Also liked his older stuff from the Anthology album, even added Space Cowboy to our our own band set list!
Book of Dreams, is pretty good, even today
My baby daughter loves Steve Miller Band!!! We listen together and watch live performances at playtime
This whole album is a masterpiece! It’s like one whole song
This is a diamond version! Never heard it before, I like it! Thanks for uploading this treasure
I can't even imagine being hearing this for the first time. Time keeps on slipping, just slipping away. They are not even following any type of sheet music for a while just feeling it and going with what they feel.
Well it’s true they don’t have sheet music, but only a few parts are “improvised”… the song was rehearsed into a structured form. But it went through several different forms before it was recorded and became the smooth classic we all know today
Most songs go thru an evolution before they get to the studio. Then in the studio it goes thru more evolution. Sheet music be damned
Masterpiece! 🎶❤️
tik toc dute do do doo
Fucking jam band and Steve is the best of the best brother
That atmospheric guitar intro is the best sound I’ve heard in a long time. My ears are blessed. Definitely on repeat for a while
Fantastic. What a pleasure to hear this
Yeah
For REAL today!!! Love this vibe........
Same. Makes me feel stoned without any substances. Brought a tear to my eye!
The Spirit of good music, its all gone now
The reaction of the girls in the crowd shows that this song was well on its way to becoming a major success.
Trimming the excess and some tightening of some other parts made this song into an anthem for the decade and well beyond.
Such a great performance of an untested song with great results. ❤
I’m pretty sure that was broll from another song
Again the awesome Steve Miller way ahead of his time 👌🤙
This more raw and guitar oriented live version is badass.
Agreed feels very raw and aggressive
This was 3 years before the album came out
Bass player is KILLING. I wish the bass part in the recording was this jammy. It serves it soo much better.
Steve had a great bass player who fill in all the empty gaps. Great.
Indeed. Gerald Johnson.
@@jospinvanraat8730 The name say it all.
Were there full gaps?
@@painkiller1968 That is the question.
@@painkiller1968 I used a figure of speech that meant that there were no gaps because he filled what would have been gaps.
Saw this live on tv in 1974 - stoned out of my mind to the point of hallucinating - best time ever.
Same...🍻

@Jack Nick Whoa, wow! Really?!
@@viniciusgmachado1204 Yes WAY !!!!!!

I guess I see why-hippies get stoned, and this is the perfect song to which _to_ get stoned.
Maybe *you’re* a hippie. Doesn’t hurt to guess or imagine!
I really enjoyed seeing this band at the Carousel ballroom in SF.
6or 7 years later I was at work and a patient came in that said he was a roady for the Steve Miller band. I AM SURE GLAD I took the very best of care of this person. I even gave him a ride back to the airport Hilton.
Later I received a call " Nancy nurse, come on to our concert we'll get you in back5
Hello. How are you doing today? Thanks so much for your love and support 🎸🎶
@Coleswindell562 Are you saying you were the patient this nurse Nancy is talking about? If so this is really special! Love how things work sometimes!
What a great song from the 1970s. This is a cool performance.
Steve Miller knew what time it was back in the early seventies, Time keeps on slipping into the future and not back to the past Feed the Children with no shoes on their feet , housed the people living in the streets .❤💙👍🦅.
I was 7 years old when this came on. My parents would let me stay up to watch it. I remember putting my shoebox tape recorder in front of the TV speaker to record all of the songs. Would take it to school and me and other kids would listen to these jams on the playground. Sadly my tape is gone but I have some Midnight Special dvds.
This record broke barriers! I dig the Steve Miller Band, still. Nice debut and live performance. I stayed up late and watched it as a child.
my 3rd concert
@@perfectfan2006 Yes, Miss Miller, you were a part of the rock-n-roll/fusion experience. Strange, the artist is Steve Miller, and your last name is Miller? Are you and Steve Miller related?
Steve Miller and the band were 1 of the few groups that were given the green light to record whatever they wanted by the record company. EVERYONE RESPECT'S HIM!
@@tms-fx9zs only through my husband and his his brothers
@@perfectfan2006 Wow! Congrats on being related to rock-n-roll royalty through marriage. Smiling now.
@@tms-fx9zs you would be amazed at the inner family music has of its own force created ,,, "glen miller"
I'd like to see a band now a days try to match something like this! Creativity back in the day was so much different than what today offers.
Listen to the underrated stoner hard rock band Monster Magnet. For songs: "Mindless Ones", "Last Patrol", "Dopes To Infinity", "Hallucination Bomb" or "End Of Time."
That was awesome. Never heard Fly like an eagle sound better.
He is an absolute master in creativity and subtile performing
Love the early versions before they put it down in the studio. Funky blues jams, great organ-a real transition song for Steve.
It's amazing to watch history being made. So amazing, this song is a forever classic! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 What talent!!!
God, I love that bass! Bassgasm!
slow dancing in the dark
yes he is a walking bass solution
Gerald Johnson one of the best to do it man!
@@smellatv3.028 cheers🐝🌈
Back in High School we played the hell out of this album. Saw him live a few years ago.
I was absolutely obsessed with this song as a child. Like I would demand my parents put this song on whenever we were in the car.
I was 9 when it came out..my dad played it and I lost my mind..the album version was so out of this world. Soooooooo ahead of its time
The best live version was before Book Of Dreams. It was real trippy with all the sound effects. Steve's voice was raspy on that version. There is no released version of it. I wish there was.
Found Steve miller late. 1981. Captured me instantly while doing a rehab programme. Iconic and gifted musicians.
Haven't heard this song in awhile and it just started going in my head 😂shows you can't forget a good song
And now I know , I always thought I heard this song before it was released as a single .In 73' I was 16 and watched every episode I could of Don Kirshner's Rock Concert Thanks for the memories !
Love how it's the raw original version and they had not recorded it yet! All the over the top delay guitar and improvising, It's just awesome!! It's almost more the Allman Brothers and Santana .
Bass player is a beast.
No shit
Brilliant from such a young band.
Steve started real young, came from a musical family and met many great music legends at a young age!
Vinyl albums from mid 70’s I continue to love - and Fly Like an Eagle being the best of the best: Led Zep - Song Remains the Same, Eagles - Hotel California, Bad Co - Straight Shooter, Queen - Night at the Opera, Rush - 2112, Bob Seger - Night Moves, Rod Stewart - Night on the Town
I was born April 1973. This song has meaning beyond my soul.
Happy 50 years ! This is a masterpiece!
Incredible. If no one mentioned the keyboardist, I will. Everyone so tight.
Beyond cool to see this in 2020.....47 years after the fact
Actually 47 years.
What a shame time machines aren’t available. I feel no one’s kool anymore, in various ways. Our Western/American culture is frivolous & shallow today. No depth.
Make society kool again. MSKA! Lol
I am still flying
I saw him at a theater here in Morristown (NJ) a few years back. He closed with this. He had all the guitar effects - it was just an amazing performance. He’s such a gifted musician and this is by far my favorite by him.
Totally blown away. Both version GREAT!
This is leaps and bounds better than the recorded version in my opinion
Saw them in Atlanta. I still say this is the best concert I ever went to
That bass player is kickin' ass !
Saw him that year at Winterland in SF. He was great ! 😀
Don Kirshner Rock Concert and the comedy of Saturday Night Live. What GREAT talents came alive. Trying to leave all the pain of the 60's behind and Heal if only for awhile.
Simply amazing! I saw Stevie “ Guitar “ Miller when Book of Dreams came out! Opened with Jet Airliner but this song was the highlight! What a great what a great time to be alive! Never forget it!
That bass sounds so smooth!!
This was great. The bass player is really good too.
YES HE SURE WAS, BUT NOT ONLY WAS HE A LEFTY, HE ALSO PLAYED WITH THE STRINGS UPSIDE DOWN TOO.
@@terrycater4716 wait what? Haha
Still love SMB in 2023 ❤Epic music man 🤗
This is it in the raw. I love this song!
I appreciate seeing this video because I feel like Steve Miller wasn’t on tv that much compared to other artists.
I love this version, its more funk in its phrasing than later versions...
The bassist is crushing it.
Yep 🔥🔥🔥
The bass is sublime ! So good !
After watching his hall of fame appearance I have renewed my love for the Steve Miller band !!!!
I love the designs on his guitar.
I listened to Steve Miller when I was young, and that is one underrated guitarist.
Comments are not wrote, great album and brilliant live version.
It was so cool back in the late 60’s and early 70’s when bands would play songs live they had written during sound checks and rehearsals before they were even recorded and released. The music industry truly screwed its own pooch over the years, didn’t it? I love live music - to this day even in my 60’s we still go to concerts to hear great bands - including Steve Miller just a few years ago.
Your music🎵🎶 is Amazing!! Thank You!!
Steve Miller Band.🤯
Far out man, the milky way is shimmering! Incredible live performance, thanks for posting.
One of the greatest songs ever created.
Back when the Steve Miller Band were still doing psychedelic blues rock and hadn't gone commercial...
The Joker was a #1 single & album in ‘73. Can’t get more commercial than that.
Gone commercial? Your comment is commercial.
Fukn unforgotten legend..
So much of his work was appreciated & still is..
One of the timeless crew
Pittsburgh in '77 with the hash pipe, listening to this.
I don't know who that was on bass but I love his work! He was just a slamming away on that bad lad! Groovy stuff ❤
Saw Steve Miller...Day other Green '76. The line up was Atlanta Rythem Section, Steve Miller, Heart and then The Eagles!!! Steve blew them all away!!!!!
How WONDERFUL!!!!! Thank U! Thank U!!!!!🐬❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🎵🎶🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️💜💖💜💖💜💖💜💚💚💚💚💚💚💙💙💖
So cool to hear this song I’ve heard innumerable times on the radio BEFORE IT WAS RECORDED; he hits what became the opening riff at the end; so many great performances on The Midnight Special; I never missed it!
Absolutely incredible wow 🥰 that is what you called true talent, so inspiring xxxx💙🙏
Amazing how Steve had a broken neck from a car accident as well as developing hepatitis just a couple of years before this. Just shows you can come back from great adversity.
They should of made a movie about that you know like
HYSTERIA:THE DEF LEPPARD STORY
Groovy outasight I'm digging it man I was born in 1963 so you know I'm not joking around I just heard this song on the radio went to Google I never saw this early live show before yeah I think I'll watch it again and yeah I'm digging it man
Well that’s a different take. The word psychedelic comes to mind. I like it and I like that guitar. Nice version.
He joined to the underground scene...very experimental sound...
In my opinion, the original was intended to be at least somewhat psychedelic
welcome to the world of live performances
Before he released the album, great bass player!
I remember the Midnight Special, Don Kirshner's Rock Concert, and of coarse, Don Cornelius' Soul Train...we used to pop pocorn, get our friends together, stay up late sneak some liquor into our drinks and have a great time listening to & watching our favorite and new bands...didn't even know what a "music video" was...then, Saturday morning, Dick Clark came on with American Bandstand.... what a trip. 😊
Utterly amazing to hear the primordial ooze that this pop hit began with. Echoes of the Meters and some serious psychedelic funk.
A Chicago man?!
Steve Miller looks just like my friends father. My friend's father is a Carpenter and always has a pencil perched behind his ear and drives a pickup truck with ladder racks. Nice guy
trippin. steve was my first guitar hero when i was a kid. i bought book of dreams and fly like an eagle albums when i was 10 or 11 at the local flea market way back in the 70's for a couple of bucks. still have those albums.
Those FX pedals for the win. Take that Johnny Marr and the Edge. Echo, tremolo all back in 1973. USA! USA! USA!
When music soared !!!! And, yes, great bass work !!!
Saw him in concert last nite in Nashville, it was the place to be....
So, cool! Raw, and newly imagined... .. ... Song fully developed in the next year, with the 1974 studio recording, all over the radio airwaves (still, my favorite). Message with lyrics, musicality, etc., still relevant today, in 2022. .. ... 🤘🏾
OMG I'm in love with that guitar!
Les Paul Special with a custom paint job!
Tout simplement planant, psychédélique et génial !❤
This is 👍
I think he had fragments of the melody around for years (you can hear bits of the chord structure & changes in earlier album tracks from the late 60s), but he had to wait for moment so he could write the song in full AND then write & record enough material for two classic albums.
Great song. I heard it all the time in the 1970s never heard it live. I wondered its meaning all the time and imagined it was an out of body experience floating through time. Anothe Trippy song like this was "Nights in White Satin" by The Moody blues.
His best song and album, PERIOD!!!
Remembers this one when I was a kid. Made me smile.
Hello. How are you doing today? Thanks so much for your love and support 🎸🎶
Before I was born by a few years, but I love this hypnotic version.

Badass. Simply badass in psychedelic fashion. Space Echo rules!
