I like the attention to detail with Yoshi in terms of his invulnerability. Why do I like this? Well, think back to Yoshi's Island: What COULD kill or harm Yoshi aside from already OHKO things like pits or lava? NOTHING! The only thing holding you back from tanking every hit is Baby Mario. So Yoshi in Wonder is basically him at his peak with no handicaps in the form of infant plumbers! Its great!
honestly i don’t even think this game is at a baby difficulty. i found some of the levels p tough which was fun. but i think the main reason people find it easier is because it takes a page out of kirby’s level design and make the levels more of a place to explore and fine secrets and little silly things rather than purely an obstacle course. I think it really works for this game while still keeping it’s identity.
At least from what I observed it has few floating platform types that seemingly are more common with the NSMB games, although it does help with immersion a bit as the settings IMO feel more natural - I do think the 3☆ and beyond feel like the classic level base difficulty though.
I LOVED the talking flowers. They're just kinda silly, and they only get really annoying when you're stuck on one part of the stage or waiting for an obstacle where you keep triggering the voice, but otherwise they're not too bad and just add tot he charm

And it's actually pretty substantially lasting knockback at that. Potentially leading you to instant death that any other character with a power up (or nabbit) would be able to avoid if hit. Also, both Nabbit and Yoshi being unable to use powerups means some collectables are straight up impossible to get without multiplayer. So, there's that.

This means that millions of children are going to play this game and yet we still talk down to including accessibility options for children in children centric games by calling them “baby mode”. 8:20 Seems like a throwback to the boss battles from SMB3. Actually, a lot of this game reminds me of SMB3 now that I think about it. Especially the drill power up. The racoon suit was the same way, allowing you to basically skip a lot of stages. I guess they figured it would be better to use Bowser Jr. so they could make the wonder effects the highlight of the fights. A very sound, if simple, choice to make.
It’s crazy how technically since this isn’t a new super Mario game…This is technically Super Mario Brothers 5, the sequel to Super Mario World we all wanted since the 90s
It's so true! All those original games always had a unique charm and so many new concepts added to them, I'm so glad we're finally coming back to that after decades.
Mario Wonder also feels like Mario World, and the similar magic of how it flows and such. The way the game is structured in a basic sense, as well as the little things, like being able to throw shells upwards does connect that just right for me. Lots of other things mostly the good, are as well from other mario games mixed together into a melting pot.
Wonder is so wacky and that's one of the things I really like about it. It feels like so many ideas were thrown out there and executed to wonderful results. In a way, Wonder is New Soup's antithesis with there being more personality in one level from the former than the entirety of the latter. Just the amount of charm this game exudes was enough to make me happy. I really hope that this is the sign that 2D Mario will keep trying *actually new* stuff like they used to with 1-World.

Y'know, now that Scott mentions it, it is disappointing that Yoshi is locked into the baby mode for some reason. Being unable to take powerups, but in exchange having a whole different moveset, making Yoshi more akin to a Shovel Knight alt campaign character, would've been a cool feature that could've added to the replayability, especially if stages had an "Alright, now clear it as Yoshi", 100% completion requirement. I definitely hope Nintendo someday experiments again with the Mario Bros. 2 model of giving each playable character slightly different attributes and/or abilities, so players could choose either who they like best or who just gels with them best with their slightly unique mechanics.
Unique character abilities would have been cool, although I do appreciate being able to pick my favorite character aesthetically without worrying about liking their ability. It's for that reason I abstain from using Yoshi, who is otherwise my favorite character in the whole roster and I would use if he weren't easy mode. But if they were to get unique abilities based on the badges, I'd give Peach the parachute cap on the condition it becomes a PARASOL. I feel like nintendo dropped the ball on that one! The others would probably take badges that reference their properties in older titles like: Luigi - Floating High Jump Toads - Fast Dash Mario - Wall jump or Timed High Jump If it were up to me I'd roll dolphin kick and crouching high jump into the base moveset. Dolphin kick especially, since it's the only water movement badge and is therefore mutually exclusive with every other badge.

That said, another part of me does kind of want to see Nintendo's take on a Mario game with a Kirby's Star Allies type gimmick. Imagine a Mario 2d game with 4-8 player co-op and 20+ characters where each one has 1-2 unique abilities or moves and maybe uses certain power ups like fire flowers in a completely unique way, like each character having a special projectile. It'd be wild to have a game where four friends can each play Bowser Jr., Waluigi, Birdo, and Diddy Kong or some equally crazy combination of characters that don't get to be typically playable in a mainline Mario 2d game.
im actually on my first play-through and have already found something interesting, 100% cannot be achieved with yoshi's or nabbit, due to one seed being lock behind the drill power up, I haven't beaten the game but I do think that's a nice way of doing it, no matter what you cant run through the game with just one char, you need to mix it up now and again, and even if "baby mode" characters make general level completion easier, they can make movement-based things a lot harder as you loose access to bubble jumps, drill's and such, and that knock back you get off of enemies can throw you into pits more than you'd think, sure early game it all plays the same as in its all easy, but the ladder half has actually been pretty fun so far. in a weird way what is "baby mode" does actually make things that were already easy a lot more difficult, especially without the elephant power up, meaning you can't pick up bigger shells so you have to use the harder method of breaking some blocks. in a weird way it's kinda like Cuphead easy mode, It's fun to play but certain things do require you to be able to handle normal or hard
This is a great take! I didn’t think that Nintendo could really balance the game, but playing through the final-final really proves how much time the devs put in to play testing to ensure the game is balanced for characters, online play, and co-op. It was in the 4th section of the final-final where the balancing hit me. There is one place in this section to place a standee and the speed rails make it nearly impossible to stop and wait for anyone. You just have to get gud no matter what. Co-op and online play makes it “easier” but not “easy”. Edit: I also noticed what you noticed: playing in “baby mode” actually provides the player with a huge handicap by not allowing them to get the power ups. It’s a trade-off. Yeah, you can’t get knocked out from enemies, but you also do not get to enjoy the options the other characters do. Such an amazing game!
Ironically my favorite part of the game are the flowers. They may have “MARVEL Lines” but I find it funny. I do like if you get to a place that is difficult to get to they have something smart to say. The colors and animations make me smile and I can play with my brothers so I give this game a 10/10.
This game is super charming. It didn't take a lot of time before I was in love with this game. It's early in the morning, and I have to get ready for work, but I'm already looking forward to coming home and playing more.

On the other hand that also would've made it easier to incorporate Rosalina, again 3 Toads and 4 Yoshis I'm sure all are just clones of each other. Heck maybe Rosalina could've been that too... hmmm yeah a combo, have Peach's float and the double jump then you have the option to twirl out of the float like Rosalina's twirl from 3D World... Ok I'll cut myself off, sorry so long, when I get over excited or workshoppy I tend to talk too much lol. Was going to leave it at the joke but didn't know if it would come off as one and didn't want to offend.
That ending was my beginning - and more importantly, my wife's beginning. She actually opted not to co-op it with me solely because Rosalina's not in. I was lowkey hoping for secret unlockable characters a la 3D World but I'm fine with the roster we've got. Playable Daisy still huge, my girl has the best lines.
If we really want to talk about spicy couch co-op toggle options, imagine toggles for no collision bumps, collision bumps, and power up friendly fire for extra devious chaos.

My only gripe with this game is how much this game holds your hands, I felt like i only died a couple of times in my playthrough except the special world. The game is still very fun but part of the fun of these games can be the difficulty.
Um no the safety badge shouldnt be lncluded with yoshi and nabbit inability to take damage from enemies since the whole point is that they can't die from taking hits
While I prefer Sonic Superstars, this one is also great. As a big fan of both series, this is a "Holy Shit! Two Cakes!" moment for me. The one thing Mario Wonder does a lot better is art style though.

Being unable to take powerups, but in exchange having a whole different moveset, making Yoshi more akin to a Shovel Knight alt campaign character, would've been a cool feature that could've added to the replayability, especially if stages had an "Alright, now clear it as Yoshi", 100% completion requirement. I definitely hope Nintendo someday experiments again with the Mario Bros. 2 model of giving each playable character slightly different attributes and/or abilities, so players could choose either who they like best or who just gels with them best with their slightly unique mechanics.
Unique character abilities would have been cool, although I do appreciate being able to pick my favorite character aesthetically without worrying about liking their ability. It's for that reason I abstain from using Yoshi, who is otherwise my favorite character in the whole roster and I would use if he weren't easy mode.
But if they were to get unique abilities based on the badges, I'd give Peach the parachute cap on the condition it becomes a PARASOL. I feel like nintendo dropped the ball on that one!
The others would probably take badges that reference their properties in older titles like:
Luigi - Floating High Jump
Toads - Fast Dash
Mario - Wall jump or Timed High Jump
If it were up to me I'd roll dolphin kick and crouching high jump into the base moveset. Dolphin kick especially, since it's the only water movement badge and is therefore mutually exclusive with every other badge.
@@0ceanking That's why I said small unique abilities, so most people could still play their fave and mostly ignore whether this little attribute or that one is the most optimal.
That said, another part of me does kind of want to see Nintendo's take on a Mario game with a Kirby's Star Allies type gimmick. Imagine a Mario 2d game with 4-8 player co-op and 20+ characters where each one has 1-2 unique abilities or moves and maybe uses certain power ups like fire flowers in a completely unique way, like each character having a special projectile. It'd be wild to have a game where four friends can each play Bowser Jr., Waluigi, Birdo, and Diddy Kong or some equally crazy combination of characters that don't get to be typically playable in a mainline Mario 2d game.

im actually on my first play-through and have already found something interesting, 100% cannot be achieved with yoshi's or nabbit, due to one seed being lock behind the drill power up, I haven't beaten the game but I do think that's a nice way of doing it, no matter what you cant run through the game with just one char, you need to mix it up now and again, and even if "baby mode" characters make general level completion easier, they can make movement-based things a lot harder as you loose access to bubble jumps, drill's and such, and that knock back you get off of enemies can throw you into pits more than you'd think, sure early game it all plays the same as in its all easy, but the ladder half has actually been pretty fun so far. in a weird way what is "baby mode" does actually make things that were already easy a lot more difficult, especially without the elephant power up, meaning you can't pick up bigger shells so you have to use the harder method of breaking some blocks. in a weird way it's kinda like Cuphead easy mode, It's fun to play but certain things do require you to be able to handle normal or hard
This is a great take! I didn’t think that Nintendo could really balance the game, but playing through the final-final really proves how much time the devs put in to play testing to ensure the game is balanced for characters, online play, and co-op. It was in the 4th section of the final-final where the balancing hit me. There is one place in this section to place a standee and the speed rails make it nearly impossible to stop and wait for anyone. You just have to get gud no matter what. Co-op and online play makes it “easier” but not “easy”.
Edit: I also noticed what you noticed: playing in “baby mode” actually provides the player with a huge handicap by not allowing them to get the power ups. It’s a trade-off. Yeah, you can’t get knocked out from enemies, but you also do not get to enjoy the options the other characters do.

Ironically my favorite part of the game are the flowers. They may have “MARVEL Lines” but I find it funny. I do like if you get to a place that is difficult to get to they have something smart to say. The colors and animations make me smile and I can play with my brothers so I give this game a 10/10.

This game is super charming. It didn't take a lot of time before I was in love with this game. It's early in the morning, and I have to get ready for work, but I'm already looking forward to coming home and playing more.

Joking aside they got... how many other characters? They couldn't fit in 1 more? 2 Bros, 2 Princesses, 4 Yoshis, 3 Toads, and Nabbit. I think they could've done 1 more Princess lol. She would be too similar to Daisy on that note though, since their special abilities are so similar, a double jump. Rosalina's does have a twirl that hits enemies, but at it's core still a double jump, I imagine that is 1 reason, along with... yeah Daisy is due for a mainline game, she hasn't been playable in any (unless we count Run) and hasn't been in one since her debut in Mario Land 1 (which I imagine being a 2nd reason to have Daisy over Rosalina). On the other hand that also would've made it easier to incorporate Rosalina, again 3 Toads and 4 Yoshis I'm sure all are just clones of each other. Heck maybe Rosalina could've been that too... hmmm yeah a combo, have Peach's float and the double jump then you have the option to twirl out of the float like Rosalina's twirl from 3D World...

That ending was my beginning - and more importantly, my wife's beginning. She actually opted not to co-op it with me solely because Rosalina's not in.
I was lowkey hoping for secret unlockable characters a la 3D World but I'm fine with the roster we've got. Playable Daisy still huge, my girl has the best lines.
If we really want to talk about spicy couch co-op toggle options, imagine toggles for no collision bumps, collision bumps, and power up friendly fire for extra devious chaos.
Daisy in a 2d side scroller is an automatic 10/10 for me.

My only gripe with this game is how much this game holds your hands, I felt like i only died a couple of times in my playthrough except the special world. The game is still very fun but part of the fun of these games can be the difficulty.
