I have no problem with it. BYU hasn’t played an opponent to judge them on who can expose their weaknesses. We are ranking BYU because we think they are good not because we know it.

Klatt actually lost this one. Usually I think he beats Colin. But nobody thinks BYU is better then Georgia. No group of 5 team is. And if they are not better then Georgia, they are no where near Bama, Clemson, Ohio St etc. Klatt was just being difficult, but you saw he hesitated about if he thought BYU was better.

Using recruiting as a basis for rankings is the stooopidest thing I've ever heard.
The thing is, ESPN's FPI metric heavily takes into account recruiting rankings and since ESPN always overrates SEC recruits, it artificially increases their FPI

The problem is that’s reality. We have teams that don’t play each other and they don’t play in remotely equal conferences. Imagine if a team like the Titans had to only the chiefs/Seahawks/Steelers/packers obviously their record wouldn’t be as good as a team like say the cardinals who only had to play the eagles/patriots/jags/ Texans... it’s a guessing game. Whether he is right or wrong about if we want college football to be that way (I don’t) BYU should be ranked higher than a 2 loss team BUT if you had to bet your house on Georgia or BYU head to head you’d be absolutely crazy to take BYU

BYU isn’t great. Playing marshmallows for teams is NOT a valid measurement.
Let’s take a look at his predictions about the Big 10 earlier this season.
He was so wrong it’s not funny. Ohio State is the only good team in the Big 10.
Indiana isn’t great...they’re plowing through a marshmallow conference this year. Same with Northwestern...
Happy for them but the classic B10 powerhouses like Penn State and Michigan are losers this year.

@@ye6973 I am a BYU fan and I agree. I think a NY6 is what we deserve though. I think a 2 loss Clemson would still deserve to be in the playoff over us. If we get to a NY6 and win and then go undefeated next year. I would say we deserve a playoff spot. Zach Wilson would have to come back though. Which probably won’t happen.

I agree that Georgia is better than BYU however, Colin made a terrible argument. He should have just said if you gave Georgia’s BYU schedule they’d go undefeated 99% of the time and if you gave BYU Georgia’s schedule they’d defiantly lose to Alabama and Florida and most like 1 or 2 more teams

Colin's take is exactly what feeds into the self-repeating cycle of the SEC being dominant. If you dont want to expand the CFP and you also dont respect an unbeaten team from the Big 10 or Pac 12 then like Klatt said, "Why are we here?"
I have a hard time taking the opinion seriously of someone who says the games matter “50%”. The whole point about sports is the game. That’s why we watch it. If you win the right games you get rewarded. When he says “games matter 50%” he’s saying that he doesn’t care who wins or loses, the best team is the team that can catch his eye with recruiting. Give me a break.
Just love these guys when they are trying outsmart each other. But Joel always brings the hammer!

This is not a hard argument. If BYU played the same schedule Georgia had to this point, they would be 4-4 whereas Georgia is 6-2, a la Georgia is a better team. BYU is probably ranked too high at 13 honestly.

If you were honest about your team, you'd have to admit BYU is ranked about right if not too high. Georgia is absolutely a better team than BYU and the Cougars would be lucky to keep that game within 20 if they played right now on a neutral field.

@@austinknighton5319 no they aren't. They have one surefire NFL player on that team and one or two more borderline NFL guys. They beat up on terrible competition but if they played a best of 5 series against any team in the top 20, they'd be lucky to push 3-4 teams to 5 games, they'd get swept by every team in the top 10 and they would lose every one of those games by an average of 20 points.

Big Joel Klatt guy and love these two together but I don't disagree with Colin's points here. When he presented Georgia vs. BYU head to head it brought the argument to a halt. Like we know Georgia is the better team it's not crazy to have them in the top 10
Recruiting shouldn't play a factor in whether or not a team is good. Recruiting doesn't portray how good the team is at the moment, but how good each individual player was when they were recruited rather than how good they are right now, and how good they team is with all of these players.

Recruiting matters for sure but the product on the field matters too. The problem I have with trying to rank BYU higher is you can’t really judge them based off who they have played. How good are they? The 12 teams in front of them would all have the same record if they played that schedule. It really sucks for them but you can’t really judge them as a top 4 team. They should be in the new year 6 bowl though which will happen because Indiana will not finish top 12. But that’s the best they can hope for
The BYU conversation just took a dump Saturday and everyone that didn't care is glad it's over finally
