    The question I always see from theists is: "If you don't believe in god, why can't you leave religion alone." The answer is that religion won't leave me alone. So to any theists that wander into this comment section I have two questions: 1. If your religion makes you happy and truly satisfies you, why does the fact that there are people who aren't religious bother you?, and; 2. Why is it that you think you can pester someone, but not expect any blow back? Cause and effect--look it up.

      Marc Norton Whenever I was asked that, i also tell them that the moment you religious folks stop shoving your religion into politics, then i would in turn be much more laid back and stop giving a shit.
      Secular politics is the ultimate end-goal. Who cares if some grandma down the street believes in exorcism or talking snake?
      Politics is what affect our daily lives. When that grandma cast her vote to vote for a bible-belt fundie, this impacts rest of us, and i try to remind Christians about that and why we as atheists always seem so aggressive.

      Sean Armstrong To mention something that Matt or Seth eluded to: religions should be relegated to flat-Earthers and 'squatch hunters, people with stupid hobbies that are relatively harmless.
      Then we could leave them alone and make a better future instead of fighting the atrocities of the past.

    • @kyebean
      @kyebean 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sean Armstrong I don't know how you could say that religion doesn't matter outside of politics after listening to the speakers anecdotes about their families. It goes even further than that, imagine if all the thought, money, and emotional energy that was put in to religion was put into people's interpersonal relationships or curing cancer or any number of great things. Every time someone lets go of faith, we get closer to a better world.

      Marc Norton The answer I get is 'My religion requires of me to spread the word' I guess they just want a bigger penthouse when they get to heaven. The more souls they collect, the more God rewards them.

    Seth saying "Don't follow us.", other than echoing "Life of Brian", makes me think there should be an addendum to the definition of atheist (someone who doesn't believe in a god or gods). An atheist is also someone who doesn't worship things. Being worshipful, whether the thing you worship is real or not, blinds you to that thing's true qualities and can lead you astray.

    • @benzenefire
      @benzenefire 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Marc Norton by that definition, if you believed in a God but didn't worship it, would you count as an atheist?

    What Seth said about setting boundaries and hard limits with family and the pain that goes with it really resonates with me. It is unfortunate. I know the context he was talking about had to do with religious shame, but there are other times when we need to cut off contact and stop making excuses for people's bad behavior, stop letting ourselves and our thoughts and feelings be dismissed. There are some people my life will be richer without. Then I can focus on the people who love and respect me.

They're not trying to be better than god as they don't believe in one. And to be honest it wouldn't take much to be better than god, depending on which god you are talking about. The Bible is not moral, maybe you should try reading it.

    Religion is not about god. What it ends up being about is power, money, 'us against them', belonging, or dependence. Most people don't give a crap about any theological story. They only care if any of those five categories can get them what they need. If they can integrate into a group setting they are happy. If I made millions off of my sheep I might feel a little guilty but I would keep on clipping them. The only ones feeling god at all are the ones getting what they want.

      Shane Simpson I applaud your championing human rights but, does that include the protections for minorities established in the constitution?
      The reason I ask is that, sometimes, the only way to achieve genuine equality is to establish "special" protections as policy because human societies don't naturally tend toward equality and fairness but rather inequality and segregation.
      Individuals understand and pursue equality, populations do not.

    For me the over insistence of god being in everything and everything being in the bible was a starting point. Then seeing the war after 9/11 while watching the news in the US tipped me harder to get my ball on a faster roll away from delusional thinking. I then I briefly dabbled in wicca and spirituality. All of that ultimately was from my young mindedness. By 23 I was an atheist. I grew up as a fundamentalist evangelic christian and now I am the former head of the Baltimore chapter of the American Human Association's LGBTQ Humanist Council. I currently live in Huntersville, NC with my loving new atheist girlfriend/partner and our precious baby puppy Lacey.

      ***** North Korea has a mandatory voting system.
      The issue with the US? The different states, you can only vote in your current district your live in. Well it is quite easy to move to another state, and frankly the city doesn't know that you live there, so you either have to register at city hall (which people only do to vote and you have to have proof of residency) or go home. Well, let's say I move to a different state within that 6 month window of the next election. I now need to prove I have lived in that new city. So I can't register in time to vote. Well now the government has to pay for a plain ticket for me to go home and vote, they can't mandate it and than make me pay for it.
      Let's say they try and make me pay for it. Let's say I have no money, I have no money so I can't go and vote. I can't go and vote so they charge me a fee. I can't pay the fee. Either they let it slide or put me in jail and now pay for my meals, medical care, and roof over my head and take me from the workforce and fill an already overcrowded jail. So end story, the government can't force me or anyone else to vote unless it is willing to spend a lot of money doing so.
      They either pay to transport me to the site, charge me a fee and drop it, or jail me and I'm going to get ALL my medical conditions treated on the house, mandated by law. End story the government can't force me to vote without crippling itself, it won't do that, so it won't force me. A law is useless if it has no force or repercussions behind it.
      And at the end of the day you want the government to go through all this bureaucracy and waste of time and paper so I can write down the next president should be: 'Go Fuck Yourself'?
      Doesn't seem smart.

    • @ZarPof
      @ZarPof 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Which would require the government to have even more knowledge on everything I do. What it comes down to is the government doesn't need to get into my business any more. What is gained from forcing apathetic and uninformed people to do something they don't want to? They're going to throw their vote to 'toss my salad'. So nothing is gained but a lot of tracking measures and unnecessary bureaucracy.

    • @ZarPof
      @ZarPof 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** They actually don't. They're starving to death over in NK.
      My SSN doesn't track my location. My license says I live in another state. My HOR is in another state. Yes the government does know my current address, but I've traded a lot of my constitutional rights away, I've received a lot of benefits in return though. My point? Forcing hands at politics won't make anyone care. Some people aren't wired to care about that stuff. Forcing their had will require another 3 systems to track them and people to track them and each system requires millions to set up and all on the tax payer dime.
      No, they don't monitor all our phone calls. In 1 minute time they'd have 100 years of phone calls to listen to. They have computers collect metadata. Yes, it is still an invasion of privacy but in reality it doesn't do much. So why do the do it? I have no clue.
      In the end, I'd rather have 40% of the population that is educated in politics make a smart choice than 100% make a dumb choice. Is it ideal? No. But we don't live in a perfect world. Not everyone has time to educate themselves on everything in existence. People have to specialize.

    • @ZarPof
      @ZarPof 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** You've committed a few mistakes. First being assuming what I'm thinking. No, I got the irony and causation you were drawing. Just because it was meant as a jest doesn't mean It wasn't funny, sorry to bust your chops, it wasn't.
      The second thing is you assumed all I argue for is my true position. Many things I argue for is for people's rights I don't even use myself. I can easily say the government should stay out of people's business while working for the government.
      Third you did an ad hominem. Who cares? So? Sure, I'm paranoid, inbred, and actually Hitler. My argument still stands on its own.
      My political opinions are actually likely to change. In the past 8 years I went from being a liberal to a conservative to being middle of the road. Why such a change? Because I absorbed more information and processed it. When I first voted at 18 I was busy trying to figure out how to establish credit, rent an apartment, get a job, pay my taxes, make friends, take care of my car. There really was way too much new information for me to make anything but passing decisions (all my classes in geometry and biology, for as much as I loved them, didn't help). Now that I have everything running too easily now I can actually sit down for long times and focus on just one thing.
      It comes back to an earlier point, I voted at 18 based on less topics than I have fingers on a hand. I didn't have a clue. If my head was more level than and lest filled with mindless patriotic ideas (ones that beg not to be examined) I might have thought I shouldn't vote (actually I think I thought that but felt it was my 'duty' to vote). So that was one more uninformed vote into the pot.

She's not going to defend the bible to you because she agrees with you. You aren't likely going to get her to do that, or give up her beliefs. What are the negatives to her belief? Is she trying to force you to believe? Is she sending her rent money to Joel Osteen? Do her beliefs actually affect anyone except her? You don't have to answer me, but think about the answers. You trying to force her to admit atheism is running the chance of damaging your relationship with her. Is it worth that to you?

      @@ericbussey6240 I'm not forcing her to do anything ,I don't bring up the subject of religion . I'm trying to explain to her why her belief is irrational given the proven information we have and she keeps saying her faith will not falter no matter what evidence she's presented with. I am not trying to force her into atheism , I'm simply showing her how it's ridiculous to believe or fear a god that won't heal her of cancer for the 3rd time and that If he loves us so much but allows starvation , child rape and rape in general , and for people to live in agony from diease and die very grotesque deaths no matter how hard they pray , but he still won't stop any of it or show how powerful he is by just wiping away disease or reaching down and stopping a rape , he's nothing but a fuckin asshole. He is not worthy of worship. She keeps up this more than likely false hope and just deceives herself so she can feel better. That's not a way to live , that's a mental prison. To live in fear of something and believe a horrible book about a horrible god and believe that she'll see her dead husband one day , all while having no evidence that it's real is just sad , it takes away from this life , if you live like you've got a spare one. Also to live in fear of some god because he'll send you to hell for not believing, all while not giving humans any evidence that he's there or any signs that we can understand and being seemingly impotent or maybe indifferent about the suffering of innocent people , that makes him nothing short of a piece of shit, he's not worthy of worship , hes worthy of a big spit in his face.

    Islam is so back drawn because Islamic countries happen to be in constant war.
    And people tend to fall back to religion when they are suffering(from war and poverty(from war)). (see: 38:09)
    It all started with the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire and Colonization by European Countries.

    1:01 - 1:02 - I understand that you are pandering to your audience but if you read for example the book of Proverbs (I would not bring it up for the fact that you seem relentless stuck in the old testament). Why not bring up that you care about knowledge and wisdom and love still? The bible teaches all those things and it is this sort of pandering types of answers that leave people seeing your bias is so blind it leads them to Christianity. Are you intentionally trying to make sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ easier? If that is your goal your are hitting the mark.

    • @Firstwho
      @Firstwho 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shane Simpson "not one little jot!" This is an incomplete quote of Matthew 5:17. It was satan himself that did the same thing the verse goes on to say "until all is fulfilled. That happened on the cross and that is why Christians do not stone people for picking up sticks on the sabbath because who wrote the old testament? Jews. Was it Christians that wrote the old testament? Answer no. Was it Christians that wrote the old testament? No. Was Jesus a Jew? Yes. What was Jesus the most critical of? (that would take doing this thing called reading the bible) He was critical of the religious Jews. What did Jesus come to do? (ummm you would have to have read the bible) He came so that we might have life more abundantly John 10:10 - He came to establish a better covenant under better promises Hebrews 8:6. Please post more of your biblical ignorance so that it serves as a stepping stone for more people to come to the truth of Jesus Christ please.

    • @Firstwho
      @Firstwho 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Shane Simpson "how does your Unchanging God - Change" - Is this a personal experience you have seen? Gods word talks about moving from "faith to faith" and "from glory to glory" and things are build "precept upon precept".
      If you read the bible you will see obedience brings blessings to people, situations and circumstances and disobedience usurps Gods authority and corrupts people, circumstances and situations.
      Gods word talks about it this way "set your mind on the things that are unseen because the things that are seen are temporary" - You have never seen the unseen right?
      You have never read nor understood these concepts at all correct?
