  • Aron Ra is an author, educator, and atheist activist. He joins Seth Andrews to talk about pagan Christmas, religious awfulness, and humans' place as "beasts" in the animal kingdom. Shows with Aron are always entertaining, and this one is no exception.

I can honestly say my life is so much less stressful since my wife and I gave religion the boot out of our lives. Very hard to leave because of the depth of involvement in church activities I was into. BTW, that church was the Salvation Army, a group that really practices what they preach!

    • @TheReaverOfDarkness
      @TheReaverOfDarkness 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Except that they don't. The Salvation Army relies on abusing the good will of the many innocent workers who volunteer for them, but it is one of the Salvation Army's core driving principles to make sure that any work against poverty is never successful, the poor are to remain poor so that they will be easier to convert to Christianity. You don't hear about how much money the Salvation Army receives in donations versus how much they spend on providing aid. The difference is enormous, and the folks at the top either pocket the money or spend it toward legal battles to ensure that the law keeps people poor. A lot of genuine charity organizations will not receive donations, because donors prefer to give to the Salvation Army, believing it to be larger and stronger of a charity. And a lot of the people working in those genuine charity organizations are not able to reach out to all of the people who need their help, because they aren't well known and they don't have the community trust that Salvation Army has. This monstrous false charity is doing the exact opposite of what they preach.

I am currently a believer but based only on feelings and not hard facts. My beautiful amazing son is a non - theist. I have no worries about him being judged by God, if God does indeed exist. My son is the most honest compassionate generous person and I am honored to know him let alone be his mother. A god who would send him to hell for simply being honest enough to admit to himself and others he does not believe is no god at all. I already question religion and listen to these podcasts in search of answers. I also admire the honesty of atheists, they they don't lie! They back up their statements with hard facts. I appreciate Seth and Aron Ra for their integrity. And I must repeat, the best person I know (my son) is an atheist and I am PROUD to be the mom of a non-believer!

When I was in high school here in Canada, we learned for example about Louis Riel, a famous Metis leader who led his people in resistance to the early Canadian government. This was about 15 years ago. It's not that Canada is particularly progressive when it comes to teaching history, it's that the U.S. is so ridiculously far behind.

So I'm doing a lot of local history research. Part of it is the local cemetery's records. Our city was officially created in 1884. I've looked through the cemetery records year by year out of curiosity, and have noticed that LOTS of children died in the years between 1884 and say 1930. 100 years ago survival was NOT EASY.
100 years ago transportation was harder. There were a lot more little tiny towns and communities; people were more spread out as a whole. People still stuck to their local areas for the most part and didn't travel as far or as often. But there was a lot more community than it seems like there are now. You actually had to play nice and get along to get anywhere; people would just shun you otherwise. If you did something like piss off the local craftsmen, they would not help you anymore. You wouldn't live long without being nice to your neighbors.

When I was in the Navy I wanted my religious preference to be agnostic, but wasn't available (it is now). I refused to be labelled atheist. I chose 'no preference'. Our command chaplain, a great person, argued that I was an atheist. Why? Do I believe in a god? I don't know if there is one. Then I don't actually believe in one, so I'm an atheist and an agnostic. He wins! I was the "senior atheist" in our command, though none of us knew who the others were.

@@eddierice3254 That was then. I viewed "atheist" as too radical. Now I know it for what it is. It's actually very innocuous, except to radical theists. There are those who believe in astrology or other non-theist religions who are technically atheists. One should identify as a humanist or secularist, or whatever. Atheist is basically just a classification outside of the circle of theism. Also, I find the term "atheism" to be useless. There is no "-sim" in not believing in any gods. My former chaplain won the discussion.

But the book makes the point we created those gods and discarded them.

Same thing happened to me with Santa and Jesus. When I found out Santa just was a way for children to be good. I then started thinking the other shoe was going to drop and they will tell me the same of Jesus. Then at 12 I was listening to my cousin play Imagine by John Lennon and I really listened to it and opened my mind a little more. I was then convinced that it was just a book and a bad one at that. It was easier to not believe because I was never taught hell, fire and brimstone in the church. It was all inclusive Jesus and he loved his little children (enough to make them sacrifices). So I did not fear him. By age 19 I never looked back I was a full blown atheist and a good debater so I could hold my own against the religious. I also studied theology and religious theology for a couple years just out of curiosity. I'm retired and needed to pass time so why not. Very good show. ✌️💙

Having been an atheist my whole life, it’s somewhat comforting to know more are coming around as time goes on. I was born into a generic catholic family, had communion, went to catechism but it never sat with me. Even as a kid it always felt like a fairy-tale. I was fortunate that my family were not zealots by any stretch and let us kids grow up and decide for ourselves. I know many are not so fortunate. If people kept their personal religious beliefs to themselves, and organized religions hadn’t become institutionalized behemoths waging war all over the place and imposing their doctrines, the world could have been a better place.
If there is some entity with agency responsible for existence, we as humans are far removed from knowing it, much less understanding it. And that’s ok. Sad that so many can’t accept that.

I've been a huge Biology fan since my childhood, and when my late Dad, who was religious, asked me if I believed that god made everything, I asked back "Don't you think that if a god started the evolution, such a complicated and wonderful process, it would make him look much cooler than if he simply made us by saying a magic word?" That made him think =D And I would keep and keep sharing everything I learned.
Actually, just imagine this: our lives are nearly pure miracle. Because our ancestors, and their ancestors, and so on -- back to the most simple life forms -- had to survive and leave offspring, which lead to our existence now! If theists were smart, they could call it "divine". I can call it divine, haha. Being a result of million years process, that involves all Life on Earth, is so much more impressive than being mere "chosen people".

The believers who claim gap-deism is their specific win remind me of a joke from Delta Farce.
With a small army against a single soldier, the leader brags that the soldier doesn’t have enough ammo for everyone. The soldier replies that he has enough for the leader at least.
Gap-deism is too vague to fight, but we don’t have to, because it’s already completely different from what holy books claim.
They lost by showing up to the fight.

We don't celebrate Christmas. We don't listen to the music either. That makes me feel like I'm being brainwashed. I don't want to advance religion or "belief" by participating in it. To me, it 's the same theory as moderate religious people giving cover to fundamentalists. We have a new years celebration instead. I don't miss it at all. Teaching your children to believe in Santa is just a precursor to believing in gods.

I pick and chose. Obviously christmas has no religious meaning anymore. It might have started out with a religious origin but nobody I know really cares about that today. Its about the day off, the nice atmosphere and the cheery attitude of people. I see nothing wrong with putting up a christmas tree or gifting others or coming together in order to spend a mean with the family. In part its tradition and than....of course...its an excercise in capitalism and consumption. We might as well re-name it to something else and it would be pretty much the same.
