I will never forget the first time I heard this back in 86. Still repeating it to myself after all these years.

Love it. One of my favorite Laurie Anderson tunes!!! She has a piece of audio tape on a violin bow and passes it over an amplified tape head mounted on her violin.

I think Laurie tapped into the Collective Unconscious on this one. I had the same dream!

What is it that you don't understand about this form of humor? it's the medium she uses that confuses you. She uses a tape recorder and plays back the tape at various speeds and has fun with both the audible and inaudible aspect of the voice to create that unusual and weird vibe to tell a dream. Inside her dream, the she had to undergo a test for employment in a dairy on another planet. It is this mixture of humor, poetry and unusual situation which makes the charm of the sketch. It is an unusual form of humor and poetry. And it was highly technical and experimental in 1986 and she used to insert a small microphone inside her mouth. This was typical of a performance by Laurie Anderson on stage.Highly creative and weird. She was a difficult artist to classify. At the same time an artist of experimental music, multimedia performance, poetry, theater, song with anthropological content.

Also, she moved the bow forwards and backwards. So the garbled part is likely where she is playing the tape backwards.
