Yep, if you can't kill a battery by cooking the starter (on equipment known to be out of fuel), then you should hit the most critical and delicate battery part with a big hand sledge...😂
Well, with that battery terminal half-melted off, using a hammer would work as well as anything. If push came to shove, and you just needed to move the machine, screwing a clean lag screw between the screwed up post and the equally screwed up battery cable end would work until it could be repaired correctly.
A trip to the store for fuel vs a day chasing problems. Learned about the 'eating starters' problem. A small and cheap lesson time in the university of life of used machinary. Dig the channel.
Trying to drive on the starter motor for minutes at a time is a really good way to burn up the starter. The melted solder is a symptom of over use. It may have more damage inside.
@@Freedom_Half_Off if you had taken the end off it would probably have looked like a copper bird's nest inside with molten solder splashed all over it.

New batteries , new starter , larger machine with the room for a car seat in the cab , but no coffee cup holder? LOL , absolutely enjoy your videos seeing your accomplishments and victories , seeing Oliver and Bailey , and seeing the smiles on your faces makes my Sunday complete.
It's possible the battery terminal melted because of running it on the starter but more likely it was a case of a loose connection on that terminal when you were trying to start it. Was a logger for ~30 years and had that issue innumerable times.
Driving it with the starter wasn't a good idea but understandable, I've done the same thing when I lost a clutch arm on a truck. It was effective getting it started but killed the starter after a few tries. That's a workhorse and should be fun this summer for you guys.
The starter connection was not ever loose, you got it so hot it melted into the plastic and thereby loosened the nut. I spent many years fixing screw-ups like this.
You two buy a lot of broken stuff,...and then fix it. I used to be that guy. It's fun to know what you have, fix it and know it's fixed properly. Well done!
I dont know how you find the time to edit all this video after doing ALL THAT WORK and also TAKING CARE OF A NEWBORN!!! MAN OH MAN!! Amazing work you guys. much love
I recently bought a 55gal vevor tank for fuel, highly recommend. You can load it in the truck with forks and if possible local get cheaper red diesel for all your off road vehicles. The 12v pump works great also, no more messing with 5 gal tanks.
remember to check the expiry date on that fire extinguisher. When you need one, only thing worse than having no fireextinguisher, is beliving you have one but it fails to work.
Between the skid steer, Army truck, dozer, generator, and now the big excavator, y'all should consider putting in a bulk diesel tank. You would get better pricing buying in large quantities.......and Riley might be less prone to running things out of fuel. 🙂
I can't wait to see you play with the new toy! I know breaking down is not fun but watching it allows me to follow your "fix-it" mentality. You make the breakdown fixes seem easy. That is a clear sign of a professional! You make it look easy.
I've been watching your videos for about 6 months and I'm happy to see your family growing. I'm glad you found a simple fix for the machine, it looks like a lot of fun.
Riley and Courtney! you guys are amazing. we understand life has been a little crazy, and beautifully complex with Oliver arriving. to do what you're doing AND post vids all the time is a lot of weight. SUGGESTION: In an effort to avoid future starter issues --- put a lock nut over the existing nut; that way it won't loosen up and cause the same problem.
that sounds like a good idea but a tank that size requires a hazmat endorsement. way to go is a big tank at the homestead and a 100 gal for the back of a pickup. I recommend one on a hose reel makes it a lot easier
I've loved Toyo tires for a long time. Good choice. How about a good size diesel transfer tank in the back of your work truck - with a pump and hose to directly fill your equipment?
Congrats on the Ex120. I have had a EX120-2 for 14 years and it has served me well. Correct about the start but under normal circumstances they last quite awhile. I might recommend installation of a bat disconnect switch on the neg lead just in case. Stay on top of the fuel and eng oil filters and on the bottom of the fuel tank there is a sump drain to get rid of crud. Best of luck
What he said! We had this same machine for about 7 years. There's a little screen in fuel line at top by filter, crud gets sucked in if you run empty. Get yourself the factory repair manual it's awesome! It'll save you a ton of trouble. The number one problem we had was the front idler track spread out and it throws its tracks until we welded in bar stock to close in gap, this is another known common problem. Re; noise and smoothness of travel, You might have some bad bogeys, good news they aren't super expensive. Ours was a grey market machine from Japan. in the future when you run out of fuel on the way down, turn the excavator around and point it up the hill, and then drive backwards down the hill, its where the fuel pickup is, and it will get you to level ground

The melted "solder" on the starter is a fusible link. Very repairable ! Keep a few on hand, it's a common issue.
Yeah, I was thinking drop (raise?) the new one, repair the old one at leisure.
Yup, he didn't have spares, the other owner rebuilt them.

Hello Oliver! It's great to see Bailey up and about as well
That is a nice excavator! It’s pretty big, don’t put any holes in the building! 😂😜😬
