So much of this felt like a Clone Wars episode - Cody leading a clone squad on a mission, working together to fight battle droids, named Clones are introduced only to be killed off almost immediately (classic Clone Wars right there), and you naturally want to root for the Clones, only to be given a stark reminder that they're the bad guys now. Great stuff.
Also, Governor Ames was voiced by Tasia Valenza, who voiced Shaak Ti in TCW!

I even hoped that some droid would have gotten our Cody or Crosshair out during battle (because they are dangerous ones)... they are bad guys now. I was surprised by even myself about this how much I felt ,not hate but antagonism against empire's clones. You could say im now separatist and root for them. I think Rampart is laying a trap for Crosshair. That last jab he threw, _"Funny, isn't it? How these clones around you seem to keep... disappearing."_ I think he's willing to let Crosshair dig a hole for himself through committing atrocities and when it's finally deep enough, that's when he's going to drop the revelation that he knows Crosshair lied to him. At that point, after everything he's done, Crosshair is going to be forced to make his choice once and for all. _"The Empire or your Brothers. You can't have both."_

I have a feeling part of why Crosshair wants to stay with the Empire because of his superiority complex. Most of the 'regs' looked down on Crosshair and the Batch as inferior or as others in the army. It's similar to how bullies look down on students with say, a mental or physical disability, so I imagine Crosshair is staying with the Empire because they at least acknowledge him as a superior fighter, and it could have the other clones respect him, when it really just makes them not want to be around him due to his vicious actions.
This was an amazing episode. It was great seeing Cody again as well trying to maintain some honor.

Yeah, he feels like being a soldier for the Empire is the only thing that gives him value, and he sees his brothers in Force 99 as being lost and directionless as well as abandoning him. Also he knows all the atrocities he's now committed fighting for the empire and in his mind he had to constantly double down on his duty to the Empire, otherwise every evil act he's committed can no longer be justified in his own mind.

About Cody, the moment Crosshair blurted out the word "Jedi", Cody was probably thinking about Obi-Wan & his regrets of seemingly "killing off" his once comrade-in-arms - which Crosshair rubbed him the wrong way.
And later on, "good soldiers follow orders" has then left a bad taste in Cody's mouth when Crosshair shot Ames that inadvertently drove a wedge between the two, while Cody was trying to do the morally right thing to resolve conflict. Unfortunately, dignity & integrity have no place for the corrupt Galactic Empire. Which is why the Empire sees clones as liabilities instead of assets as they used to be for the Galactic Republic.
Cody's paradigm shift has ultimately led him to leave the Empire in disgust. Of course, blindly following orders will have consequences. Crosshair just lost his only known friend because of that & he will be on a rude awakening to learn that the hard way

We hear clones throughout the Clone Wars saying that they're not droids, they can make their own decisions. However, at the end of this episode, when Cody repeats that, he adds on to that that they also have to live with the decisions they make. It wasn't a super big theme in the Clone Wars because the clones were doing exactly what they were designed for, war, and not having to think about the next day. However, I think that quote emphasizes the development from TCW to the Bad Batch, now the clones have to think about where to go next, they have to learn to live with their choices because they are no longer fighting a war

He doesn't see them as designations and still respects the fact they are more than their CT numbers. Captain Wilco in the premier episodes strictly used CT numbers when calling his squadmates, but Cody knows better.

8:31 I’d love an episode of Crosshair getting somewhat adopted by a village by defending it like that episode from Mandolorian season one. Except Crosshair actually stays and learns he can turn his special abilities into something for good. Like he ends up being a big game-hunter that can feed them for weeks off one hunt or the village defender whenever the empire try’s it

My guess is that Rex is going to call the Batch to rescue Cody. Crosshair is a wonderful character to discuss this moment in the galaxy, but his choices may not keep him alive or cost the life of his brothers, this is a great show, can´t wait for the rest of the season.

This was such a brilliant episode that really digs deep into the consequences of war on both the soldiers and the innocent. Crosshair's character got to shine with his rising internal conflict and great action scenes. Seeing the destroyer hovering over Desix is such a hauntingly stunning shot and the animation continues to fire on all cylinders. The storytelling this season has really stepped up and has me excited for whats in store in the later episodes. Overall a 9/10

The Clone Wars battle was like a "greatest hits" battle of good old Star Wars Clone Wars action. Then the show slaps you in the face and reminds you, that these are indeed, "The Dark Times." Gave me the same feeling of dread that is sometimes felt in Andor. I love it. Very raw but still very Star Wars

Like Tawni is justified in wanting independence for her planet but she believes Dooku was in the right even though he was the one to sabotage the peace proposal and assassinated Mina Bonteri. And I don't need to elaborate how the Empire is complaining about clone loyalty but are in fact the reason why the clones are rebelling.

There's this quote from a Lutheran pastor in Germany during the time of the Nazis: Martin Niemöller. For context, initially he sympathized with the Nazis but after Adolf Hitler came to power he was a vocal critic; he spent eight years in Nazi prisons and concentration camps. The quote goes: "
First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out-because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out-because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me-and there was no one left to speak for me." In the early stages of Imperial rule, it was Jedi, Seperatists, and outspoken critics like Saw who were hunted. Then they turned against those who had supported the Republic but who posed a military threat, like Mon Cala, Ryloth, and the Clones. The third stage was exploiting "other" worlds like Geonosis, Kashyyyk, Lothal, and Sanctuary worlds. By Andor the Empire has moved to the final phase: oppressing the very people you claimed to be doing this atrocities. And while the upper echelons of the Imperial hierarchy carry the most accountability, it was the ignorant masses who let it get to that point.

Not sure if it was meant as a deliberate callback, but the confrontation with Ames reminded me of the end of the Umbara arc; in that, Rex is tasked with shooting Krell, but simply can't bring himself to - it takes Dogma, Krell's biggest advocate to pull the trigger and do the right thing.
Here, Cody is outright ordered to shoot Tawni, but he can't - he knows its not right. It takes Crosshair to pull the trigger and do the wrong thing.
For both Rex and Cody, its a reminder that people higher up the chain of command don't always know best. That they have that choice to do better.

Sending the clones into violent engagements or initial military operations on a planet and the stormtroopers come in to occupy the planet after most of the fighting is done.

Something occurred to me while watch this review that ties to the Empires push to replace the Clone Troopers with Stormtroopers. When the new governor arrived on Desix, they were not likely expecting much resistance, much less an actual fight, so Grotton is escorted by TK troopers. When the Empire sends a team to fight a battle, and take casualties, they send CT troopers.

I have to say this episode hit all the right notes for me. It was executed beautifully in terms of dialogue, pacing, shot compositions, etc., and engaged me visually and emotionally from the opening scenes. The complexity and shades-of-gray of the SW Universe has never been more starkly portrayed. Then, like the cherry on top of an already delicious sundae, the whole thing culminates in some of the most enthralling and cleverly-staged action sequences in the entire CW series. Filoni and company continue to deliver excellence.

  • @henriqueabreu8076

I wonder if Crosshair's extreme attitude has been purposeful as a means to shock clones around him, adding the fact that he is a clone, in order for them to go AWOL, as some kind of subtle psychological revenge against the Empire for what they did to him, this being since he removed his chip. The idea came to me related to Rampart's suspicion at the end of the episode about clones around Crosshair continuing to disappear and I don't remember a possible influence to Howzer, but to Clone Force 99 and now Cody seems more likely. I know that this at first might not seem viable, but he could be doing this as a second objective taking advantage of his determination and loyalty to the Empire, considering his first to be what you said about Crosshair having enhanced abilities focused on violence and combat, being afraid to be something else, which I totally agree and really liked how you got there.

I love how the Bad Batch show that Obi-Wan rubbed on Cody.
Would have it been a classic Clones Wars episode, if Anakin (see the episode when a mandalorian sep take Satine hostage) and Rex (see the episode when they try to dismantle a slaver ring) were in his shoes in the hostage situation, they would have simply forcefully removed the treath. But Obi-Wan would have talked, tried to limit the risk, but never not compromise his moral (when Obi-Wan attempt to rescue Satine). When put in relativelly similar situation, Anakin and Rex chose violence, because it was the quickest, easiest and most efficient solution to save lives, while Obi-Wan and Cody both choose to remain loyal to their belief and ultimatelly paid a heavy price (the death of Satine and the separatist governor).
We also see where the values of the characters stands. Anakin fell to the Dark Side because of his attachement to Padme and would climb out of it because of his love for Luke. Rex repressed the inhibitor chips because of his attachement to Ashoka. Obi-Wan renounced to the love of his live and fought his closest friend because of his morals. Cody fell to the inhibitor chips and shot down obi-wan because he placed his duty to the republic above his friendship and the chip made him percieve Obi-Wan as the ennemy. Then, later, when it would be clear the Empire was not aligned with the moral value he defended while fighting for the republic, he deserted too.
    It's like poetry.
