Nice video, but stenographic court reporting is a more rewarding career than digital. A lot of digitals report being abused or told to do unethical stuff. Stenographers, on the other hand, have a strong education culture.

This is a pointless comment to make. The video was not comparing and contrasting digital vs manual. I know stenographers are salty about the rise of digital court reporting. My grandmother was a court reporter for many years. It was a prestigious job for women during a time when the majority of career women were secretaries and would sit in their bosses office with pen and paper transcribing his letters and notes by hand. However, the concept of “rewarding” is subjective. What is rewarding to some might be archaic and difficult to another. The fact of the matter is that stenographers are in massive shortage in this country. This is a huge problem for our court system. There is no way to quickly recruit a younger generation into the field due to the extremely difficult to learn very specific skill of stenographers. The average age of a stenographer is 56 years old. As they continue to retire there is a massive gap in a role that simply does not have the numbers to fill it within the next generation. There is no way to fast track the YEARS of practice required to become a licensed stenographer. The licensing exam is notoriously difficult to pass. The generations of today do not understand the point of a career that requires students to practice for hours every day only to face an exam that has a small margin of pass rate. We live in a tech savvy world and a job that has a form of record keeping that only the stenographer can produce and read is unfortunately a dying profession. It was something my grandmother was very proud of. It’s just not something that can be reproduced quickly. If the field can come together and come up with a way that would allow a more rapid progression to licensing then who knows? But the current generation of kids has no interest in a field that demands the kind of commitment and dedication that is required to become a licensed stenographer. 🤷🏻‍♀️
