  • In this presentation from the 2024 UCA UK Conference, Andrew Perriman explicates the famous passage of Philippians 2:6-11, with a focus on bringing out the big picture narrative and clarifying four exegetical puzzles.
He argues the passage isn't about movement between two realms, earth and heaven, but rather shifts in the public estimation of Jesus.

Andrew Perriman's book "In the Form of a God" is very well argued. Even without all the comparisons with classical greek literature discussed in this talk, this interpretation has a lot going for it on the basis of the reaction Paul and Barnabas received from pagans believing they were gods after performing a miracle. Same with Paul on Malta when he didn't die from the snake bite. The stories of Jesus' miracles fitted the paradigm of a greek wonder worker, but he turned out to be instead, a human like us, willing to give his life on the cross, yet raised and exalted by God. That's quite a powerful reading of Philippians 2 that fits the context of the letter.

All one needs to do is look at the context of Philippians 2. "being in the form of God" is a continuation of "let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus". So the "form" referred to is the conduct and authority Jesus Christ exercised from God. This same authority or "mind of Christ" is available for all christians to exercise.

Contrary to a vast number biblical scholars and NT Greek specialists his interpretation of Philippians 2 is similar to the way Jehovah Witness New World Translation twists the translation of John 1:1.

Don’t do guilt by association. With respect, that’s lame.

He keeps falling back on interpreting Paul’s words as public perception of Jesus rather than Paul’s own teaching

Jesus never renounced, rebuked, criticized or re-educated those who ( in the Gospels) worshipped Him. Thomas distinctly said “My Lord and my God”. What could be clearer evidence than that.

Because you can bow down before superior humans in the Bible. Christian’s will also be “worshipped” (rev 3:9). It isn’t a problem

He gives no proof or evidence that the passage refers to the Greeks estimation of Jesus rather Jesus’ journey from heaven to earth and back to heaven.

What a load of waffle, and the use of big words. It really is very simple, Jesus being in the form of God, Just means Jesus was God like, Here is another verse to Consider. Great is the mystery of Godliness, "God like ness" God was manifest in the flesh, etc. Those who know this verse understand the God is a bad translation, and it should Say, "He" was manifest in the flesh, seen of Angels, the He is the pronoun for Jesus mentioned earlier. Notice the word, Godliness Jesus was God like because he reflected or represent God perfectly, Jesus was the express Image of God, that is in character and spirit. Jesus was a man who was the first to be made in the image of God, the first born of many brethern

The worst interpretation, in my opinion, is that Jesus being in the form of God/a god means he was "in very nature, God."

Unitarianism is a Gateway drug to Gnosticism, Jesus is a demi-god (Adoptionist) who did all these good works in the eyes of the Gnostic to Inherent (Divine Statice) and with Time (Gnostic/Freemasonry/Mormonism) us humans too can become a Demi-god like Jesus???
