      @@ItsMonkeyNews that's an ignorant comment. Of course thief's know how to pick locks. It's less obvious than carrying a hacksaw or bolt cutters. Stealing bikes is big business, cops set up bait bikes to see where the bikes go to get resold or parted out just like cars.

    I actually have this lock. It's a bit on the bulky side, but feels really solid and strong. Someone actually tried to steal my new bike with this on it as I noticed that the rubber layer had saw-marks appear on it. Only managed to scrape and peel the rubber though - the metal is barely untouched so I'm definitely pleased. Not a fan of the bright colors in these heavy-duty locks as they kinda scream "look at me", but other than that I can definitely recommend this one. Majority of bike thefts are focused on shitty cheap locks and the thieves are rarely professional lockpickers, so this does the job as long as you lock it onto a pole of some sort. :)

    Pro Tip-- when the pump will not allow any more force to be applied to the handle, do not raise the handle to full open. Just raise it a small amount then push it closed. It will make a smaller bite at the blades, but it will move.

    One market of TH-cam that you could capitalize on, is "real world cutting". Nobody cuts these chains and locks in the "field" where conditions are not ideal. For example even with a battery operated die grinder or angle grinder, if the chain or lock has no resistance (not locked down in a vice) it will either be impossible, or at minimum extremely difficult to cut without proper support to hold it still. This is what everyone wants to see. What locks and chains will be the most difficult in real world scenarios to cut. We know nothing is cut proof in controlled settings, but what will give a theif using forced attacks the most problems in the field?

It works great for that purpose. Also pretty cheap for what it is, it costs about $60.

    Those cutters put out 12 tons (24,000lbs) of force.
    I was apart of the marketing team that designed and first sold these cutters.
    They are actually hydraulic rebar cutters.
    We made these cutters, aswell as a smaller design the YQK-70 with its chassis used for wire crimping. The small version can put out 12,000lbs (6 tons) of force about half as much as the rebar cutter. You can get a mini one to put in your pocket, and change out the crimping end tool with the rebar cutter end and get a small concealable hydraulic mini bolt cutters.
    We eventually after several prototypes, sold the patents for the rebar cutter and wire crimps to the Chinese.

    • @TWX1138
      @TWX1138 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The biggest issue with power tools are the obviousness of using them for theft. Your bandsaw may be quieter than a battery-operated angle grinder, and it may be small for a bandsaw, it's not exactly small or readily concealed. A small angle grinder might be able to fit into a large coat pocket well enough for it to not be seen until it's taken out for use, but your bandsaw isn't even going to conceal well under a trenchcoat.
      Then there's the issue of time spent trying to align the bandsaw to the lock to cut it when it's locking up a bike. The bandsaw is going to be much more limited compared to the angle grinder in how it can be applied to the lock, requiring a fair amount of clearance on both sides of the lock. A bike with baskets or other bolt-on accessories might prevent that bandsaw from having that clearance while an angle grinder doesn't require a whole lot more clearance than a human arm and hand needs to use the lock to begin with.
      This lock is almost 11/16" thick. It would increase the time for either tool to cut it, and that might be enough to cause a thief to seek a different bike.

    • @wileecoyoti
      @wileecoyoti 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Machinist answer: If the shack is truly hardened (sure looks that way) then the bandsaw blade is almost certainly going to wear out before you get through both sides of this thing. Tool has to be harder than the work piece, so you're looking at carbide or an abrasive to have much luck. Good thought though!

    I wonder if the hardness now means the shackle is rather brittle, maybe a hefty strike with a well placed sledge hammer blow could shatter it? Of course the ramset would see it as no challenge at all with it's impact.

    • @ShinobiDiabolik
      @ShinobiDiabolik 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it looks like the manufacturer also tempered the shackle. tempering takes little hardness away from the shackle, to remove brittle, but leave enough hardness to resist cutting. Relax it is not nuclear physics.

    I think this a great thing you do.
    The jaws of the cutter are massive and you would need ample room to get it between a bike, post and whatever else in inside the shackle.
    Perhaps a pipe to slide over the shackle that's bigger then the jaws would be good. Sure they can cut the pipe and such but it's added time and pain.

    The kryptonite's down here are just too expensive.
    Thank you for sharing, i might go with one of these!

    Would be nice now to slowly up the ante on it. Hacksaw, die grinder, then finally the Ramset. It'll definitely fail on either the die-grinder or the Ramset, but it would be nice to see how resistant it is to some of the other typical attacks before going to what we know will destroy it.

    I was sure the hydrolic cutters were going to cause thehardened metal to break like some of the other hardened steel ones. I for sure expected it wasn't going to cut in, but to not break from sharing forces focused points is impressive.

    I will probably buy a second one and colour code them with key

    Let's see the ramset try to shatter the shackle since it's so hard! If this withstands the hydraulic cutters, the ramset, and is decently pick-resistant, it may be a truly secure lock.

    before you rush out and buy this, remember that locks have many different aspects to them.
    the mounting bracket for this is terrible, for example, and there are several complaints of the internal locking mechanism rusting easily and seizing up, and the keys being made of soft, easily breakable pot metal.
    so if only the shackle concerns you, then this is a great buy. I typically carry ulocks in a travel bag or backpack so this works for me.

    That settles it. This is my new lock. Hard to pick because of its odd keyset, and hard enough to resist cutting. On Guard is hit or miss and many have flaws other than picking or destroying, such as the Bulldog being susceptible to water damage, and the keys on all of them break the heads off because they are just molded plastic, but with the shackle housing I suspect this will resist the seizing I got with the Bulldog.

    A little curious about the hydraulic cutters - they look similar to what is usually used to cut steel rebar - while often larger in diameter than a shackle, rebar is definitely not hardened. Watching the cutters themselves fail in a ductile manner (i.e., bending out of the way) it seems unlikely that this particular tool is meant to cut hardened steel. As a metallurgist, I would expect much harder blades, that would tend to fail in a more brittle manner (i.e., chip/crack) - these look like perhaps they have been case hardened (i.e., the surface has been hardened) but are not a tool steel or something along those lines (certainly not a carbide cutter). I am wondering if the failure of the tool here is more of a case of the wrong tool for the job than anything else - similar to the analogy in a previous video of using a bolt cutter designed to cut hardened steel vs. one designed to cut copper or aluminum conductors. This video seems to be more of a demonstration of how case hardened steel is no match for a properly hardened shackle.
    As the hydraulic cutter videos have been coming along, I have been wanting to advise using a scatter shield of some sort to protect from "shrapnel" from when the cutters shatter when they do meet something they can't handle - obviously not the issue with these, though, as they bend rather than snap.

    Looking at the damage on the lock it made me think. If you damaged your own locks in such a way as to make them look like they resist such lock-breaking tools, then it could deter a would-be thief. And he'd be walking away thinking that he saved himself the trouble and feeling quite clever. All the while your lock could be cut apart with a pair of pliers for all he knew!

    I'd really like to see how would hydraulic cutters fare against ABUS GRANIT XPlus 540 lock, supposedly the most secure U-lock that money can buy (and it's quite expensive at that). The shackle on it might be hardened but it looks too thin to be able to resist the cutters, this OnGuard looks much sturdier...

    Downside is the hernia you get from carrying this lock. I'd like to see how the Kryptonite Evolution Lite Mini-6 holds up. It's not a big city or college campus-rated lock, but it is a hardened U that's reasonably light. (Very small, but I've always been able to find a spot to lock with it, even with a bike with very fat tubes.)

    Do you think you could get a set of jaws hardened to just past the hardness of the lock? If you go to the right metal shop, they'll have an indent tester to let you know how hard the lock actually is, then either they (or some other youtuber, perhaps) could heat-treat the jaws past that value.
    (Actually, maybe you could an indent tester for yourself - it could be an interesting bit of info to provide for "hardened" shackles on all types of lock)
