I like very much your reviews, one of the best channels in YT. Not biased, very objective and comparative point of view to other products in the market, within the same segment. Thanks.
My first new car since 1999 was a 2014 CX-5 mid-range Touring in November 2013 and I'm really pleased so far. I got the FWD version because I'm not in the yuck alot and simplicity, weight and mileage were factors. I wanted something I could sleep in on long trips and its got the room and fold-down seats makes it pretty comfortable. It was advertised at 25city-32hwy and I'm at 30.3mph after 13,000 miles. On three separate trips its done 35-38 mpg highway. Road noise on rough pavement is a very minor gripe but with 5 people in the car with backpacking/camping stuff and the air conditioning running mid-level for 2000 miles a couple times this Summer and doing 35+ mpg this car is great! To the Mazda folks who might be listening I'd advise you you weigh heavily the Engineering costs vs. customer demand--you've got about the most perfect vehicle in its class as it is. Keep it the same and run it for 5-10 years. Yeah, I'd like this and that but reliability should be the focus! Very pleased with my first Mazda.
Thanks for this informative review. You usually visit all the criteria we look for in a veh. I drove this 2015 CX5 CS with 2.5L engine and was impressed just as you detailed. We pick it up today and look forward to comfort memory foam seats and an suv that drives and looks like a sporty trick. Thanks from PEI, Canada!
Great review. I am considering getting the 2016 CX5. I think they've been listening to you. Some of the changes you wanted in this video are now in the 2016 CX5. You give great reviews and answer all the questions I normally have if I keep listening. I almost bought a Honda Accord coupe w/the manual V6 because of your great review but ended up with a 2015 Mustang GT Premium PP. Happy w/my choice now. Thanks, Dennis
You're missing out though. The manual transmission for this car is heavenly. I only wish they would offer it with that 2.5 liter engine. But still, you can get everything important about this car (the wonderful chassis, etc.) and a highly enjoyable manual transmission, where you get a very fun driving car plus the utilitarian and comfort aspects of a compact SUV for about $21K. You can't beat the value.
Great review as usual. Appreciate that you actually assess the looks and feel of a car in addition to how it drives. Well done. I actually think the 2015 (with 2.5L) is nicer than the 2016 but agree the different color displays is a bit bothersome.
Best looking SUV for the money. I would not mind driving the fwd with the cloth interior (which is actually really nice) here in FL. Mazda has a sporty feel and look I can really appreciate. Great review BTW
I own one of this but mine is a 2.0 for various reasons being in Taiwan, this is a very nice car, drives like a sedan, can't find too many cars at this price level to replace the Bimmer I used to drive. The interior in the video is not my taste though, mine is all black so it matches with the dash and door panels, the vidoe system they have here is also better, we have the 7" screen, but you pay for what you get, my 2.0 FWD cost roughly 34 grand. If I were to pick again I would pick the same thing. Probably the only thing for improvement would be the the sound damping, especially on high speed, other than that, it's a perfect car for the price, no regrets at all~
engines are designed to be revved. Ford f150 with 335000kms on it and its been driven like it was stolen since it was new in 99, 2010 mazda 3 had 90000kms before i sold it and never had a single problem, bought it brand new and raced it through country roads almost every single day on my way to work. F150 is still going strong still and is just a work truck now.
Totally agree. Revving what appears to be a cold engine is just an awful thing to do to a car. Makes me really question his judgment. No car savvy person would ever do that!
Some of the errors that were made during your review were the fact that you can indeed zoom in on the Nav screen by simply pressing the magnifying glass that was clear to see during the review( right side of screen). You also said that the rear seats had a 60/40 split but in fact it has a unique to the class 40/20/40 split. And the last thing was that you criticized the screen for being small saying that the buttons would be difficult to press while driving if you had big hands. You failed to mention that there are steering wheel controls for the Audio/Handsfree to prevent you from taking your hands off the wheel while driving to use the touch screen. Other than those errors, I enjoyed the review.
I've owned four new Nissan vehicles since '82 (I keep my cars for years). I test drove the Rogue SL (very stylish except the cheap, plastic shift-plate). I liked the ride but in the end, I liked the Mazda CX-5 GT just a bit more; I picked it up yesterday. I hope I'm as pleased with Mazda's service as I was with Nissan's.
The best engine to get in this is the diesel 2.2, low compression, 60mpg, sounds nice, and the most reliable, and twin turbo, also, your steering wheel is on the wrong side :) lol🤣
I love the CX 5 Mazda hit the nail on the head with it Great job does anyone know if Mazda is supposed to bring the diesel version of their engine over anytime soon? Great review as always
Drove both a CX-5 and CR-V. I liked the sporty nature of the CX-5 but the interior was really cheap feeling in comparison to the CR-V. The redesign in 2016 may remedy this.
I'm thinking of purchasing this one with about 45k miles on it. But I was told by someone that the transmissions on most Mazdas are bad, is this true on this car?
hi everyone! I'm looking for a CUV. I just wonder which CUV would you pick? CX-5, Rogue, CR-V, Rav4, Forester? The Escape is out of my list, because it has too many recalls.
I ended up with a cx5, though it was really close with the Forester. The Forester was noticeably slower (the turbo was $10k more, thus out of my price range), I liked the interior of the cx5 better (seemed higher quality imo), but the Forester had more space and seemed more open inside. Overall it came down to the color choice lol. The Forester had really dumb colors (don't remember, but along the lines of Grey, black, white and an ugly green) whereas the cx5 came in 3 different blue colors, a nice red, a nice dark Grey and others. Looked at the Rogue, but wasn't impressed mostly because the dealership was crappy and made me uninterested. Nothing seemed special over the other two anyways. Don't know about the rav4. These were 2014 btw.
***** Ford Escape has a "P" for the new IIHS small frontal overlap collision test, which is 2 grades below "G" (which is what the CX-5 has). If you are a family car buyer, it should be one of the top concerns.
In this video, its not a GTi. Looking at the reflection off the CX5 at 15:13, it is instead a white Acura TLX with dark chrome rims. However, they did use a Honda Fit before for his previous videos.
Mazda needs to do something about their paint. It's so thin. I went to look at them and each one at the dealer (brand new) had scratches that looked small but took down the paint. Awful.
Oh how right you are! I work at a Mazda dealer and it's appalling how bad the bodies are, not just the paint. We just got a 2013 CX-5 with 40,000 miles and the paint is chipping on the doors and peeling off the hood. The owners even told me, they garaged it every night, washed it often and did nothing to make the chips and peeling occur. I would never buy a Mazda just for that reason. I know for a fact that my Jetta has triple the amount of paint on it compared to any Mazda.
Current platforms: Mazda 2=Fiesta CX-3=Next Mazda 2 Mazda 5=Ford iMAX CX-5=Mazda 6 CX-9=Ford Edge Previous platforms: CX-7=Mazda MPV & Mazda 5 combination Mazda 3 up until 2013 was Focus MK2 platform Mazda 6 up until 2012 was Fusion platform CX-9=Ford Edge Tribute 2000-2012 = Escape 2000-2012 Tribute/Escape based on Mazda 626 platform (in fact the rear discs can swap over to drum models) Mazda Protégé = Ford Escort Mazda B-series Pickup = Ford Ranger Unique Mazda platforms: MX-5 Miata RX-7 RX-8 (Renesis engine co-developed with Ford) MPV (Mazda L platform) All Mazda DISI engines are Ford Duratech (basically all Mazda engines after 2003 were co-developed with Ford) All Mazda Skyactiv engines are in-house developed. Ford and Mazda share a cross-licensing and patent sharing agreement on previously shared technologies. Engineering has operated independently since 2010.
Mike Miller They didn't "make it for Ford," Ford just used the platform like they use practically all of Mazda's platforms ;) While the CX-9/Edge are built on the CD3 platform shared with the Mazda 6, by the time the Edge was produced the 6 was built on a modified version of CD3 (which Mazda calls Platform G, and the 2008-2012 6 used "GH") This is all prior to Skyactive, which is not licensed to Ford. The 2015 Edge uses CD4, an entirely Ford platform likely hijacked from Ford UK (it's pretty damn similar to the EUCD platform) But yes you are right, the CX-9 and Edge are a Mazda 6 underneath, although their wheelbase is longer and the platform must be reinforced (probably a boxed sub-frame) to handle the increased weight and towing capacity. It's also worth noting the CX-9 and Edge both use a Ford 3.7L engine. Mazda, like Ford, can continue using previous platform and engine technology even though their partnership has mostly ended.
Roberto Gonzalez My cousin was telling me her Mazda beat her to the socks and she had to get rid of it fast, losing her ass on it. She's kind of like me in that she packs on a lot of miles in a day, and doesn't have the normal commute to work, park 8+ hours, then commute home deal.
I have to say this and I know I will get some hate, however I would take a VW Tiguan in this segment or the New Mitsubishi Outlander which is also very nice.
I wish all reviewers or Mazda stop referring the engine and transmission code name as " SkyActiv" which has no meaning to over 90% of shoppers, try to explain the technology to them, same as honda's Earth Dream. These names confuse peopls
There are two things Mazda must do to improve the company. I think they have to make their cars with quitter cabins, and they must improve their infotainment systems. My wife and i love the driving dynamics of Mazdas, but we both have passed on Mazda and went with the competition because of Mazdas poor cabin insulation and less than average infotainment system.
Mazda CX-5 or Subaru Crosstrek? I'm leaning towards the Subaru, but I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinion if you can give a reason as to why you think what you think.
Rogue for sure. The 2.5 in the Nissan has been around forever. While the 2.0 and 2.5 SkyActiv engines have been around for about 2 years tops and they're already having issues.
Brandon Friesen What is the skyactive issues? Co'z i never heard any.. AFAIK NIssan X trail almost known issues was it's transmission..i don't know about this new one, co'z it's upgraded from prev Xtrail's transmission..
It's because Mazda isn't an automotive giant like Honda, Toyota, GM, VW, Ford etc. People buy from companies that are bigger, most of the time. The Mazda lineup could be covered in gold and cost $10,000 less than the competitors and people would still buy from other companies. Give it time. Mazda is growing.
The more "normal" car reviews I see (the cars, not the reviews), the more content I become with the old vehicles I already own and have paid off. These things are getting nicer and all, but they still don't seem to be any quieter or significantly more powerful or better on gas than what I have...and I'd be making huge payments on a new car. It's not as though I can afford a brand new Escalade, and that's pretty much what it would take to satisfy me. I'm a snob when it comes to NEW stuff because at the end of the day, my mind would have to be blown in order to justify a monthly payment. I can tolerate less knowing I'm free of financial oppression,, and my less isn't really that bad. I hear the road noise from this cSUV and it sounds like my 1997 4 cylinder station wagon. And the engine sounds pretty much the same...ticks and all.
I'm not sure why everyone keep praising these Mazda vehicles. I have test drive the 2014 Mazda3, CX5 when it first came out and personally it wasn't that impressive. It feels under power or on par with the rest of the vehicles in this segment. Cabin noise, interior layout/designed was just average or feels dated, so we bought another SUV instead.
Dude, everything you said they should add would drive the price up to a CX-7. That's kinda why the CX-5 doesn't have it, to keep it within the market segment.
Hello people on the internet! I am thinking of buying this (Mazda Cx-5) or the Subaru brz. I am single, about 5'7. I am thinking of getting a dog so I just need two seats. Also, I have 2 years to buy a car and I have a stable income. My budget is $50,000. I already have the money to buy either car; so in your opinion, which one should I get? Thanks in advance.
Nice review Sofyan. When I also first came in contact with the Mazda CX-5 two years ago while filming it at the same time (but the Sport version with the 2.0L SkyActiv Engine), I had the same overall positive view about this vehicle, especially with how well it drives when I test drove it on the highway access roads. - Michael Land
Everyone NEEDS to check out the 2015 JD Power Vehicle Quality Study results. Mazda and Subaru scored abysmally low. Mazda ranked 25th out of the 34 vehicle brands in the study. KIA and Hyundai ranked #1 and #2 out of the mainstream car brands. I highly recommend buying the 2016 Hyundai Tucson, it's got a very modern and attractive design and new improved handling from Hyundai.
UltimateDriver I agree Hyundai and KIA make very high quality cars now. Mazda makes unreliable cars, that`s why Mazda is not popular in Japan. In Japan, if you want best engineered car, then German car is best choice. Standard car then Toyota and Honda

I wonder if the different colors has to do with the fact that Mazda outsourced its production to various places outside of Japan for 2015
I would love to get the diesel in the US!
***** Just how thin the paint is and stupid design of wheel well liners since they trap crud and then corrosion happens.
Don't worry Toyota paint are crappy too I work at the polishing dept. and its pretty thin.
Brandon Friesen japan engine not problem. but wv engine problem
Ismail Komurcu Japanese drivetrain in German dipped frame would be an excellent daily driver ;)
This is NOT the 2015 model. why do people insist on calling the 2013 and 2014 the 2015 model? Very misleading.
The 2015 has a completely redesigned inside. The car shown was the original model,
Who is the reviewer in this video?
Very nice
What are these cars built on , if this one is the 3 , what is the CX 3 then built on ?
And is the CX 7 out ?
Thank´s
Current platforms:
Mazda 2=Fiesta
CX-3=Next Mazda 2
Mazda 5=Ford iMAX
CX-5=Mazda 6
CX-9=Ford Edge
Previous platforms:
CX-7=Mazda MPV & Mazda 5 combination
Mazda 3 up until 2013 was Focus MK2 platform
Mazda 6 up until 2012 was Fusion platform
CX-9=Ford Edge
Tribute 2000-2012 = Escape 2000-2012
Tribute/Escape based on Mazda 626 platform (in fact the rear discs can swap over to drum models)
Mazda Protégé = Ford Escort
Mazda B-series Pickup = Ford Ranger
Unique Mazda platforms:
MX-5 Miata
RX-7
RX-8 (Renesis engine co-developed with Ford)
MPV (Mazda L platform)
All Mazda DISI engines are Ford Duratech (basically all Mazda engines after 2003 were co-developed with Ford)
All Mazda Skyactiv engines are in-house developed.
Ford and Mazda share a cross-licensing and patent sharing agreement on previously shared technologies. Engineering has operated independently since 2010.
Tim W The Edge is from the Mazda 6. They made it a Ford ... then a Mazda
Mike Miller They didn't "make it for Ford," Ford just used the platform like they use practically all of Mazda's platforms ;)
While the CX-9/Edge are built on the CD3 platform shared with the Mazda 6, by the time the Edge was produced the 6 was built on a modified version of CD3 (which Mazda calls Platform G, and the 2008-2012 6 used "GH") This is all prior to Skyactive, which is not licensed to Ford. The 2015 Edge uses CD4, an entirely Ford platform likely hijacked from Ford UK (it's pretty damn similar to the EUCD platform)
But yes you are right, the CX-9 and Edge are a Mazda 6 underneath, although their wheelbase is longer and the platform must be reinforced (probably a boxed sub-frame) to handle the increased weight and towing capacity.
It's also worth noting the CX-9 and Edge both use a Ford 3.7L engine. Mazda, like Ford, can continue using previous platform and engine technology even though their partnership has mostly ended.
Tim W th
Mazda is probably objectively the best car company in the world
Subjectively, not objectively.
Very attractive looking ride but don't let the looks fool you. I had a Mazda cx7 and it was the worst ride I have ever owned.
Veedub why?? I am planning on getting one ://
GIve us the D mazda!!!
...Diesel that is.
I have to say this and I know I will get some hate, however I would take a VW Tiguan in this segment or the New Mitsubishi Outlander which is also very nice.
When do u think the 2016 cx 5 is coming out? Eager to find out!
Taking delivery in late February.
Great review, super informative
Great review. Good job.
I wish all reviewers or Mazda stop referring the engine and transmission code name as " SkyActiv" which has no meaning to over 90% of shoppers, try to explain the technology to them, same as honda's Earth Dream. These names confuse peopls
why dont they have a lock on the glove compartment? that's what I hate the most =(
awesome review
There are two things Mazda must do to improve the company. I think they have to make their cars with quitter cabins, and they must improve their infotainment systems. My wife and i love the driving dynamics of Mazdas, but we both have passed on Mazda and went with the competition because of Mazdas poor cabin insulation and less than average infotainment system.
You wouldn't believe how much undercoating reduces road noise, cheap fix for an issue that every carmaker has.
@@jamieandsherimurphy what do you mean by undercoating? is their referring to paint or insulation material?
@@jimmywatsup1 the coating that can be applied to the undercarriage of the vehicle.
Mazda CX-5 or Subaru Crosstrek? I'm leaning towards the Subaru, but I'm interested in hearing everyone's opinion if you can give a reason as to why you think what you think.
Both very good cars, both will be reliable, the crosstrek will be more comfortable and the cx5 will drive better
what is the intro song?
Will there be a review for the 2016 model in the near future?
The navigation and different colors in the dash are deal breakers.
when did they add the shut off at lights to save fuel
Do you know how damaging for automatic transmission are your accelerations with steering wheel turned?
Which one more reliable? CX5 or Rogue?
Rogue for sure. The 2.5 in the Nissan has been around forever. While the 2.0 and 2.5 SkyActiv engines have been around for about 2 years tops and they're already having issues.
Brandon Friesen What is the skyactive issues? Co'z i never heard any..
AFAIK NIssan X trail almost known issues was it's transmission..i don't know about this new one, co'z it's upgraded from prev Xtrail's transmission..
How come this mazda cx5 is not selling well despite good review? And sir can you pls do a review of the vehicle you actually own? Thank you!
Has radar cruise or regular cruise control?
Quit taking so much Adderall bro.
2016 cx5 review? Anytime soon?
At 6:30 he said "tiny ass screen" LOL
good review - at .75 playback.
Its bad , that you cannot get the Manual Transmission for higher trims. Only for 2.0L engine. That's sux...Semi-manual is not the Manual
The brand "new designed" 2015 CX5 dashboard => my 2009 Honda Element dashboard.
+username already taken The CX-5 will be better in long term. Since you have a dog and you probably need more room. The BRZ is just too small.
+username already dam 50k for a budget you have a whole shit load of choices
Are the bi xenon adaptive headlights swiveling ?
Yes.

2.0 diesel engine is the best fit for the car...Fuel consumption very low, exactly as the manufacturer states
UltimateDriver Hyundai makes extremely reliable cars. I think anyone who lives in 2015 and the future knows this.
Marcus Jensen True. I bought the 2015 Hyundai Sonata Sport 2.0T and the handling is superb, much better than my old 2004 Honda Accord.
UltimateDriver I agree Hyundai and KIA make very high quality cars now.
Mazda makes unreliable cars, that`s why Mazda is not popular in Japan.
In Japan, if you want best engineered car, then German car is best choice.
Standard car then Toyota and Honda
UltimateDriver Troll who works for Hyundai
Mitsubishi Outlander is a very reliable and cheap suv
If this was a german car, it would have been ovehyped.
It sounds like a BMW revving
