No, people who buy this aren't going to do any "extreme" offroading like this, but watching this lets me know while towing my ATVs to the trails, or driving through snow in ohio winters that this CX5 is infact, up to that task while still giving a great ride and awesome gas mileage on pavement. Thanks for doing what other reviewers aren't doing for me!

I own the Mazda CX-5 Touring Edition and can ONLY heap praises on this car. Drives with more zip than you would expect "Zoom, Zoom" - cargo capacity GALORE (we frequently pack the thing to the brim with tents, coolers, grill, bicycles etc etc)! We've taken it on long road trips > seats are VERY comfortable (fits five adults EASY, I am 6'3"!). Love this car - was thinking about upgrading to something else, but for the money/fuel economy/capability - - you'd be hard-pressed to find anything better. Oh - and I know this is just my biased opinion, but I LOVE the Kodo design language... It LOOKS really timeless/clean (better than most other small SUVs currently on the road). And that Bose sound system - - NICE!!! Go get yourself a Mazda CX-5, what are you waiting for???
I'm sure I watched this before purchasing my 2014 FWD 2.5 liter CX-5. Its now almost 18 months later and I just want to say I'm extremely pleased. Very roomy inside and comfortable for five adults on long (1500-2500 mile trips). 30 mpg after 12,200 miles with 32-39mpg on two long Summer trips with lots of highway miles and air conditioning. A very comfortable/capable car! I hope the diesel versions will come to America (and i think they'll sell well) but I really love my CX-5 :-)
This was great....love when you take these testers out and show what they really can do in the wild. Glad you found the cam. Had a flash back for a sec lol.
Thank you for an awesome review. Every other review channel that does off road things, baby the car, like they're terrified hurting it. You just put that car to the test and did an awesome job. Thanks for a real review.
I don't know if he's trying to be or not but this dude is funny as hell. Def the best car channel on you tube. I found this channel looking for a review of a Nissan Rogue and subscribed just because of the entertainment value of watching Dave.
Hey Dave, great review. I've been a subscriber for about 3 months now. Got to say, I love your channel more than many of your competition on TH-cam. One suggestion that many of peers are not doing is the infotainment system segments. People want to see the navigation in action. How does it display lanes, or exits on highways? Things like that. Everybody does car enthusiast information (hp, and rpm), but also think about what people actually are going to use, Tech. Once again I love your channel I hope you continue your work. "Boo yah"
If you look at the front underside of the car at around 6:15 you see how much damage he did to the car. I wonder how that gets handled after he gives that back to Mazda.
Oh I see, "ONLY" the skid plate ripped off a little, lol........ Looks like I was right about it being a skid plate, though I always assumed they were supposed to be super hard to break or tear off (so they could better protect the vehicle).
My gf and I just bought the grand touring model. We LOVE it. I've actually climbed hills just as steep and in deep sand and it made it fine! I have to disagree with u on the power. It has plenty compare to most of its competitors. Its absolutely amazing in deep snow, water, ice and mudd. I've put it through its paces. We almost got stuck in deep sand, it started to spin then the traction control kicked in and it started again perfectly. We also have a 1st gen crv that its better at off road than the cx5. That little Crv is a beast. Good review!! Do a crv
Dave, I am glad you showcase CX-5 off-road experience. When you got stuck going up the hill at the beginning, in your opinion would the Subaru XV Crosstrek hybrid would fair better on those cases? Any advise would be appreciate it. I am deciding between these two cars. Thanks and keep up the good work, man!
Can you bring back the VW Tiguan? Last time it was winter and it only was a front drive model. Would like to see how the 4Motion does in the same situation as this CX-5. Thanks!
Not sure if I'm wrong, but it's not the hp that will climb a hill, but rather the torque. Also, the original tires are pretty worthless in such driving conditions.
If I wanted to know how this thing drove on the road I would go to my local Mazda dealer and take one for a rip. I would never drive that Mazda like that but it is cool to see that they are somewhat capable off road. But this... this is pure entertainment!!! You have the best job ever man...
Hi jboneus2112 - check out the 2014 review of this car to hear my on-road driving impressions... since there are no major changes for the 2015, it should be the same :-)
Everyman Driver Tip, if you want CX-5 to accelerate, stab the throttle halfway instead of normal press. This signals the computer to downshift a gear or two, otherwise computer will lug the motor to save gas. Its a feature. CX-5 0-60mph in 7.5 seconds is no slouch.
Interesting review. I don't think the car is all that under-powered. A major factor in getting up and over those steep inclines are a good set of tires. Not all "All Season" tires are created equal. Many are good, some are better than others.
I have this car. I live in Canada. It handles snowy and cold conditions just fine. It was the best on road driving compact SUV that I tested. I have had it for two years and have had no problems. I don't regret buying it and will probably get another one in a years time. I do wish they had an option for an engine with 200+ HP
icoombs73 Source? I only ask because I am a hardcore mazda fan and I have not heard a single thing about a speed 3 other than that mazda has one in the pipeline due for the 2017 model year at the earliest
Nice review. I was coming from my X3, and my uncle has a 2014 CX-5 AWD. I was surprised that the Mazda feels very premium in the cabin. Nice job, Mazda. I heard that they have been trying to do a turbo charged diesel engine for some time. Hopefully, that will give it the real off-roading capability. However, like many have said, only probably less than 1% of CUV owners will ever go extreme offroading like that. For me, my X3 has never ever seen mugs.... LOL.... Thanks for the very nice review again. Great job!
Mazda absolutely did not design the car to do what you just did omg lol. Some snow and slippery roads I'm sure it'll do ok. But mud pit diving lol. I'm sure you caused some damage on the plastic bits under the car hitting that pit. You simply got lucky it wasn't stuck. Jeeps and Subarus etc, yes they love diving in mud pits. Only less than 1% of CX5 owners will ever see mud.
I don't know how the specs are done in the states. But for Europe we are getting a facelifted one for our 2015 model. The one in the video is not the 2015 model, but the pre-facelift 2014 model.
Thanks for this review, it was the missing link in the search for my next car. Here's the story: I own a Honda Civic Si (8th gen) so I'm used to a sporty drive feel, and it works very well as my daily driver but I go to the beach or the mountain once every one or two months, and I've had to limit the places I go because of the road conditions (mostly gravel with occasional small rivers). I was bored by the Honda CRV's dull CVT transmission and the Rav4's little ground clearance, lack of torque and bad fuel economy, and the only thing holding me back from buying the CX-5 was thinking that it could not do any kind of off-road. I don't know if people bash you for your reviews, but know that there are people like me that find this information very useful, and I couldn't find something similar anywhere else. Thanks and keep it up!
This dude does some serious reviews. How many reviews drive a car through a two foot deep mud hole? Not to mention what he did to that 4runner. Pretty cool.
Uh...am I the only one who watched this video and, at approximately 6:16 into the video, noticed that it seems the front skid plate has been torn loose??? I mean, some metallic or plastic piece is hanging on by just a little bit.........
I think the Mitsubishi Outlander actually did better on this course. But the CX-5 did better than the 4 Runner thru the mud pond! CX-5 made it thru that muck 3x! Wow!
I've been searching for an off-road review for the 2.5i 2014 Forester from your channel, but could not find one. Can you do one to see how it stacks against the other CUV in the ORV park please?
Everyman Driver doesn't the CX-5 also compete with the 2014 Jeep Cherokee and the Compass? (Btw, the Compass is the worst vehicle i have ever owned, it is terrible.) The Cherokee is the best vehicle i've ever owned and it gets amazing gas mileage. never gotten below 28mpg and i am averaging 29.8mpg combined. i have gotten up to 33.5mpg on one trip that was all 60mph highway.)
Hello, I'd like to know which you think is better , the outlander sport or the mazda cx5. In your reviews the it seems that the outlander performed much better than the cx5, even with its smaller engine. I'd like to know your views. Keep up the good work. Thanks
Dave. Could you do offroad video of XV Crosstrek to see if it can handle the ORV roughness? I know CX5 is bigger but it reminds me of xv everytime i see it. Thanks alot.
Just curious if this one was a manual or an automatic? I have a manual (2013) and have managed to get through some really rough terrain and jeep trails, never expected her to be as capable as she is!!
Thanks for the review! I found the sequence between 6.00 and 6.20 particularly helpful as it gave me a clearer idea of how the car handles ruts and bumps more than the onboard footage. That said, I enjoyed the whole thing. Good work!
Everyman Driver Why dont you also tie a piece of string to your go pro and run it in the car with the window closed on it or the car door. So if the go pro mount falls off with the camera they will still be attached to the car
Why would you leave the cam on the side? Most interesting thing during "off-road driving" is seeing the torque distribution between front and rear axles, especially when wheels start to lose traction, and you can't really see that with camera only showing 1 rear wheel, or when the camera's lens is covered by mud. Same goes for when the camera is pointed at your face (it's ok to do it while you're driving on paved road) ;-)
Hi, Is this the same as Mazda cx-5 2016? No improvements over the 2015? I have googled and can't find any differences. Someone said it has better sound proofing?
I just got my 2016 and I don't think with the power it has I would be goodoff-roading. However if you have a camp site a ways back in the woods with terrain a car would struggle with it may very well be capable of that. For the most part this vehicle is best as an in town or highway vehicle for small families, pet owners, or if you travel and haul around luggage or equipment for work. The clearance and AWD I think are mainly for handling snowy conditions. Those are a large part of why I purchased this vehicle. I am not surprised that the vehicle was having difficulty with the more extreme off road challenges. However this will handle most of what you will see in daily driving even further north where we get some interesting winter weather. Sport mode is nice as well. It helps compensate a bit when merging and passing if you are used to a v6 as I am with my past two vehicles.
invest in a $5 tether for your GoPro, they're designed for these situations. Just set the tether mount up higher, or just have the string, wrapped around something, I'm sure you can find something to tie it around. Or you can use the 3M VHB tether sticky pad that you can stick onto some other part of the vehicle so if the GoPro Suction cup does because loose, it'll just dangle off the tether so you don't lose it. They're cheap, GoPro has them for $20, or you can find them on Amazon for $10.
+Snafu2346 The 3rd party ones are $5, and they're the same thing. I would also spend another 10 bucks on longer tether wires. The ones that came with some kits are just nylon. But you can get some stainless strings that are also coated in rubber so they won't scratch the car. I order the tethers for $5, and ordered 3 stainless tether strings that are 33inches long for each. I'll actually tie it around the door latch, or even the side view mirror. Even the windshield wiper, or one of the metal pieces located all over the car. If needs be, I'll actually use the sticky tether.
this are meant for light offroading,i have a 2005 kia sorento 4x4 that would kill this suv offroading, now if you want a good offroad suv get the wrangler, toyota fj cruiser and 4runner trd pro,or a used montero or 4runner 4x4,now sorentos made before 2009 4x4 are pretty good too,i will uploads some videos soon.
also isuzu rodeo-amigo and trooper, toyota land cruiser and cherokees, i had a 1995 mazda mpv 4wd 3.0L it was probably better than this when it comes to offroad....mitsubisbi endeavor, outlander, mazda cx5 and cx7 new sorentos and santa fe,subaru forester all this awd suvs are good for light offroad nothing extreme...
One issues with your video. This is a Grand Touring model that you tested, leather and 19" rims give it away. Like you said this vehicle won't experience these conditions but this is a great choice in the CUV market. Definitely the most fun to drive in its class.
looks like you had fun! my mom has the 2014 AWD and I have to say I do like how It drives, and the All-wheel-drive works just fine! although I do agree I wish it had more power =). great video
***** not necessarily. you can have higher power and still have higher fuel economy. the CX-5 isn't near as efficient as it should be. the 2014 Jeep Cherokee has the same power output, weighs more(i think), and i'm averaging 28-30mpg combined. Never gotten below 28mpg in it:)
Awesome to see someone take this vehicle offroad. It did great on that mudd! But the uphill not great at all, I'm sure little more momentum would've gotten you over that. Would love to see more steep inclines because that is what really separates it's competitors. Keep it up man. Btw, what would you do if you got stuck? Seems like you were by yourself haha!
Can you confirm what size engine in the car tested. What is the 2.0L or 2.5L petrol engine or the 2.2 Diesel Turbo? If it was the 2.0L then I can understand why it lacks power.
I used to own a 2007 CX-7 Grand Touring AWD with the MazdaSpeed3 2.3L Turbocharged I-4 with 244hp. It was "okay" it was just made really cheap. It was very quick. I had it for a year and traded it for a 2008 Acura TL.
Vlad B oh ok thanks for the reply. I think i'll look this up again in several years. I made my first car the 2012 mazda 3 Grand Touring. I test drove a 2015 CX-5 touring but didnt go with it because it wasnt as loaded as the mazda 3 which had pretty much everything i wanted on the inside. my next car will definitely be a 2016+ CX-5 Grand Touring
im a buyer. i dont like the idea of leasing and i like to eventually own so i could do what i want with it and drive how long i want. ill definitely finance a CX-3.. Cx3 grand touring with moon roof and bose sound system is now my new dream car. dont really care about the AWD lol.
SALO or The 120 Days of Sodom: I can't eat rice with my hands like this... Then eat Isht! If you don't want the AWD then don't get it lol. If you live in a place where it never snows and you don't go off-road, it makes sense to get the FWD version.
BasedNeel well i live in NYC and it doesn't snow every year but when it does, it gets crazy. At the same time, thats for only 4 or 5 months out of 12 that we have to deal with snowy roads.
Hello, I am having a hard time thinking what to get am divided between the Ford Escape 2014 SE or Mazda Cx5 Gs 2015. It¨ll be nice if you guys help me out. Thanks.

If you look at the front underside of the car at around 6:15 you see how much damage he did to the car. I wonder how that gets handled after he gives that back to Mazda.
there is a thing called duck-tape my friend lolz
I think when giving back the car to Mazda they would do a full inspection
Exactly, and he will most likely not be getting any demos from Mazda in the future
Only the skid plate ripped off a little. It's an easy fix.
Oh I see, "ONLY" the skid plate ripped off a little, lol........

yes i found this out. I have the 2.0L. It still is sluggish though. 2.5L would be better but it wasn't avalable when we got it

where do you find these nice hill sites?? Super. I like the hill ascending test. Why is it called AWD?? It behaves more like a 2WD.
As multiple terrain, Spokane , Washington state,
Lots of place like this hilly in Colorado, Montana,
What sunglasses do you have on?
Mazda absolutely did not design the car to do what you just did omg lol. Some snow and slippery roads I'm sure it'll do ok. But mud pit diving lol. What's hanging under the engine at 6:14? Is that major damage or easy to reattach? Is it a common thing in this vehicle class?
late reply, but i'm fairly certain that's just one of the plastic covers on the undercarriage.
I really wished you would take the Subaru Outback on this course.

take the Cherokee trailhaw here I'd like to see how it compares through the same hills and mud.

Please do a subaru outback and a forester xt off-road review
Yes, Please put up the Subaru 2.5 against the 3.6 and or the XT.
2015Outback 3.6!!
I would also like to see the review of the Forester 2.0XT in this same park.
so hard to get off
Do you think this vehicle is better with the 2.2litre turbo diesel engine option ?? !!
Could you guys do the 2015 Toyota Landcruiser Sahara? Do you guys even have that car in America??
Why would he test an overpriced 110k Toyota....
When is cx5 next generation coming ? 2022..
can you review the Volkswagen Tiguan with 4Motion off road please? you are the best reviewer Dave and there is no Tiguan off read review.
+Intrepid Milotic I can try and do a 'first look' from a local dealership. VW won't send me press vehicles anymore.
Oh thank you !
+Everyman Driver Can you do the S trim please?
+Everyman Driver ouch, why? did you bash them?
I wonder why... (as the chin spoiler hangs off at 6:16)
What's that thing hanging or almost falling off from the front bumper?
Hey Dave love your off road videos, when are u gonna do a Subaru xv off-road?
please test the subaru forester and xv
Shopping around for a new car. Can you do a review of the 2014 Toyota Highlander Limited?
Arthur Maclang Please 'search' my channel... I drove the Highlander earlier t his year - Dave
8.5 inches ground clearance, or you sure Dave? Seems I've heard 7 and change?
Which us better for off road this cx-5 or acura rdx 2013 ?
invest in a $5 tether for your GoPro, they're designed for these situations.
I really like the review you did, I loved the part where you were looking for the GoPro, lol. Glad you found it.
Why would anyone give a thumbs down on this. Great video
Could you guys do the 2016 Toyota Corolla S ?
I just bought a 2015 Grand Touring. Like it so far 👍
I'm thinking of getting this car, should i get it in blue or white? FWD or AWD? Thank you.
So do you recommend this compact SUV?
the newer mazda cx5s have offroad mode and hill assist which completely change he offroad handling and use of the AWD
Whenever you can can you make this same video with the new Outback?
Are these cars really meant for mudding?
AWD in todays CUVs are for light snow falls. Nothing as serious as this workout.
But still fun to watch.
this are meant for light offroading,i have a 2005 kia sorento 4x4 that would kill this suv offroading, now if you want a good offroad suv get the wrangler, toyota fj cruiser and 4runner trd pro,or a used montero or 4runner 4x4,now sorentos made before 2009 4x4 are pretty good too,i will uploads some videos soon.
also isuzu rodeo-amigo and trooper, toyota land cruiser and cherokees, i had a 1995 mazda mpv 4wd 3.0L it was probably better than this when it comes to offroad....mitsubisbi endeavor, outlander, mazda cx5 and cx7 new sorentos and santa fe,subaru forester all this awd suvs are good for light offroad nothing extreme...
One issues with your video. This is a Grand Touring model that you tested, leather and 19" rims give it away. Like you said this vehicle won't experience these conditions but this is a great choice in the CUV market. Definitely the most fun to drive in its class.
The CX-5 is a sweet ride. Love the Cardinals hat!!!!
what was the price you had to pay to fix the skid plate???
Great review! Worth that business class and 5 star....
Ooo tell me about the keyless entry again. What about the cupholders?
+Jon C I'm confused?
Sacasm.
I'm loving the Cardinals hat
looks like you had fun! my mom has the 2014 AWD and I have to say I do like how It drives, and the All-wheel-drive works just fine! although I do agree I wish it had more power =).
He said it's a Touring model, which is only available with the 2.5L. No diesel CX-5s in USA or Canada.
the mud hole is deeper than it seems. But the CX5 managed it. good job.
I love it when people test crossovers off road :)
NeroFilm Productions Then you have come to the right place - Dave
Why don't you use shoulder belt?
I used to own a 2007 CX-7 Grand Touring AWD with the MazdaSpeed3 2.3L Turbocharged I-4 with 244hp. It was "okay" it was just made really cheap. It was very quick. I had it for a year and traded it for a 2008 Acura TL.
Is it real time AWD or that fake 4X4 stuff where you can only go below 20MPH until it's FWD?
+Vlad B so is it better to just get their FWD version?
You still sound like the news reporter that you used to be. Not bad at all. And thumbs up!
Acuravigor47 it's hard to break it but it does come in handy when you compare my videos with the 'other' channels on TH-cam.
Everyman Driver Thanks for kindly replying to your subscribers. That cool of you to do that.
love Mazda!! very nice cars! owned one! reliable car
a bit disappointed to see the AWD fail when climbing that hill.
Hello, I am having a hard time thinking what to get am divided between the Ford Escape 2014 SE or Mazda Cx5 Gs 2015.
It¨ll be nice if you guys help me out. Thanks.
Same car as my new 2016.5 version (color, options and interior) and I paid
What do you mean by major damage to the 4runner? What messed up on it?
kekocucu u I've discussed this topic many, many times on my podcast and in video blogs.
My 2014 2.5l is unstoppable.
Great reviews!!
