    I have studied Great Lakes Shups for years so I have long ago heard of the whalebacks and Mr McDougal. I have also been on board the SS METOR its well worth the admission and she's beautifully cared for!

    i was on the algocape.......we raced the windoc all the way across lake erie......we were neck and neck but in the end we had the preferred line of approach and she had to cut back.....i went home in lock 8....a few hrs later my mother in law called the house and said there was a ship sideways across the canal and burning....i drove down and tried to get a look but there were cars for miles so i just went back to my ship further down the canal......im grateful our sulzer won that race

    Great job! I like your research and presentation. Like others, I’d seen the video of the bridge crashing onto the ship but didn’t know the story. That boat had a lot of design features not usually found on Lakers. It makes sense that the boat wasn’t repaired after the accident when the thousand-footers were becoming all the rage and there were still plenty of traditional Lakers to be had.

    Great video Connor! Sad this Windoc was destroyed by someone under the influence.

      Yeah really is…..if you’re going to drink the stuff then at least drink responsibly, especially when you’re operating important machinery like a bridge.

    I lived in Alanburg when that happened, I remember the days following the crash when people from all sorts of different towns came to the crash site to look at it, and all the news crews came to cover the whole story. I was only 8 years old but I remember it all like it was yesterday.

    Awesome video! I can't imagine operating something like that under the influence! Thank the Lord no one was killed

      Thanks! He shouldn't have been operating under the influence period. It is a miracle everyone was okay.

    Inhaling alcohol? I was thinking about busting your chops here a wee bit but, I won't. I like you and the job you do with this channel. However, when you said that, it did make me smile somewhat and kind of scratch my head. You live in Duluth. There are a lot of Lutherans in Duluth. They like their beer. I can imagine, abstractly, that there's a small percentage of them that "inhale" the stuff.
    You were pretty thorough with this video and kept it concise. That's a great skill for a future university history professor. Maybe, I don't really know what career path you'd like to follow or if you've even thought about that stuff, yet. I would like to know, though. Anyway, good job with this video. Once again, I learned something new, here.

    That traffic bridge took a good whack as well as the ship bridge

    • @ConnorTenold
      @ConnorTenold  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah it really did. The thing was the ship was damaged way more heavily than the bridge.

    Thunder Bay resident here. For many here this disaster was the beginning of the end for the Paterson company as a shipping giant on the lakes. It was a real loss
    They're still around out west but they do nothing on the lakes anymore really

      Sad that such a big company was so negatively impacted by someone on the influence of alcohol…

      There was no testing after the occurrence, but he had 2 Darvon-n tablets that morning and 2-4 glasses of wine around lunch time.

    That wasn't as scary as when the Steelton took down the Port Robinson Bridge. I believe was still a bridge master controlling that bridge when it was struck. So he went down with the bridge

    Can you do a video on WW2 t2 and t3 tankes that were turned into great lakes freighters. If you want I can send you a link to a video that shows all of the ones that were converted
