    As of 02 August 2022 Transportation Safety Board of Canada has not released a report. There is not scheduled release date for a report. This is curious as TSB’s website indicates a report of this nature is normally issued within 450 days of date of occurrence. We are more than 2 years from that date and as of the last update, OCT 2021 it was in the report phase. I have sent an email asking TSB to provide the public with an update as we are now 700+ days after occurrence.

    I hadn't heard of this incident before now. One would think that this type of thing shouldn't happen, nowadas. Thre are all sorts of things designed to help prevent this. Thanks helping me learn something new today, Connor. Keep up the good work.

      Nowadays there is more of a chance for collision because people depend and trust the technology to do the job of a human. Humans silence alarms and alerts all too often then forget to rearm or power up.

      One would think! But, the Canadian "marine transportation safety board" has a library of reports on such incidents online, same for airplane and rail incidents, same for other countries.

    With many years experience sailing on the Great Lakes my guess would be that the Florence Spirit had a black out and lost the ability to steer, I’ve been on freighters where this has happened multiple times on different ships but out in the middle of the lakes. Usually the engineers have multiple generators running when transiting the canal and the anchors out of the pockets ready to be deployed in case of this happening, you can see from the pictures that it doesn’t appear that the anchors were not out of the pockets and ready unless the stern anchors where ready

      @@pumacat1637 why do you assume I wasnt on board? The official investigation and report hasn't been completed yet, but I am privy to information. Speed and bank suction were the cause.
      The engine did NOT experience power failure of any kind.

      @@nicolemadden1457 because I know several sailors who were on board at the time and it was just a guess about the blackout however that still doesn’t explain why the anchors were not out of the pockets and ready to be deployed as that is highly recommended if not required while transiting the canal and I personally been on ships that had to deploy the anchors a couple of times due to a blackout and steering gear failure, and I have been a sailor for over 36yrs and been through the canal hundreds of times unbound and down bound I also have more sea time going astern then most people have going forward. Bank suction ? Hundreds of vessels transit the canal a season and have never heard of any ship have that problem. We slide the walls to get into each lock without ever having a suction problem lol but yes obviously speed was a contributing factor and they were well off the bank in fact both ships were in the centre of the canal from what I seen

      Connor the reason given by Transport Canada is that dynamic water forces caused the abrupt turn.p.s. check out the ship Steelton and and it's meeting with the PortRobinson Bridge on the Welland canal.

    I m a regular visitor at the welland canal and until today I still don't understand what happened there plus bolt ships had a welland canal pilot on board

    Worthless Title: No answers. What sounds did the ships horn make before the collision? Was there pilots aboasrd? Will an Admiralty court convene? Which government has jurisdiction? Where the ships passing Port to Port sides?

      Yes! This is actually the "high speed" section of the canal, opened in 1973, where the speed limit is 8 knots. (The older, narrower sections have speed limit 6 knots).
