Glad they knocked down the point on the flipper tab. Hinderer knives really are a joy to own. I have to open and close them a few times every time I use one.
Nice review, I was lucky enough to snag one from the first batch. It hasn’t left my pocket since I got it. Fantastic knife, fits my hand great. I love the XM-18’s, but I think I like this a little more!
Just got mine 2 days ago and I love it, I just took it apart to clean it and add skiff bearings and when I was putting it back together I snapped the head off of one of the middle standoff screws, I wasn't over tightening just trying to get it snug, it might just be my bad luck but keep an eye out for that, either way awesome knife
@@Bearded_Ham75 I had that happen to the pivot screw on a $600 mid-tech a few months back…I feel your pain. Funny enough I actually just finished swapping mine over to teflon before seeing this and luckily did not have the same issue you had. I’ll definitely be keeping that in mind, though, next disassembly.
@@VDC_EDC luckily I reached out to them yesterday and they got back to me today, I know there's a lot of people that don't like Rick but they couldn't have been nicer in their response and they're sending me out a new standoff and screws
The flipper tab is also large and aggressive so gloved hands can deploy it easier. I absolutely love that integrated tool backspacer. I go crazy over super nerdy details like that. This knife is way too big for my tastes, but hopefully that trickles out into other knives. Is it patented?
Great video - thanks. I have several Hinderers, and have debated getting one of these. The single aspect that has prevented me from buying one is that it can only be opened in 1 way. Removing the flipper tab still allows an XM-18 to be opened in several other ways. I am not sure I can get past this design oversight.
What other ways are you talking about besides the “thumb studs” if you remove the flipper on the xm18? I’m curious cause that’s the only way I can find
The handle size, and hook at the heel, work exceptionally well for most people. People with exceptionally large hands can choose any of a number of other excellent Hinderers, that don’t have a hook. Another possibility for the well-heeled owner might be to have the knife customized, by having the hook removed. If an expert does it, it might be neatly done, though I would probably just get a different knife!
I am 6'-6" tall and wear a 2x glove and I can use the pm3 without issue. Of course the pm2 and pm3 have finger choils and a less aggressive tooth on the tang on the butt end, I just let it rest between my ring finger and pinky. I'm just used to it I guess.
@@9mmmike642 Thanks buddy! It's funny how I always like to represnt as part of the knife community by carrying higher end pieces....but the people around me don't even carry knives or use them! (When I pull out a kershaw fraxion at Christmas to cut ribbon and get, "Wow that's the biggest knife I've ever seen!!!" LOL
I bought a brand new Jurassic, and guess what? The backspacer/tool was missing. I am currently trying to replace it… and the seller seems perfectly willing to replace it if it cannot be found. Life CAN be great!
Irony: As I was watching this, I got an email from Hinderer's website saying they had XM-24 Bowies available on the site and I snagged the last one! Crazy.
Awesome knife. My natural curiosity how much this would weight without the tool installed (especially vs. XM18 which isn’t carrying one). I’m sure not enough to justify not carrying it without. 👍
Oof. I think this one might be worth chasing. May the odds be ever in my favor. Edit: A skinny Project X would be wonderful. A ZT collab version of the Project X would also be very welcome.
A Hinderer could be my Strider substitute. Sadly they’re almost as hard to get. Yes, I could get either coming my way tomorrow, if I’m willing to part with the cash.
I like the fact that Hinderers are made in the USA, but in a world where 70% of everything decent is imported, I will gladly settle for 99% domestic. In a world where so much stuff is imported, it’s hard to be purist about being “only” 99% domestic!
I feel like the simplicity of the knife is along the same lines as CRK in general but even more simplified since the main assembly points both have huge captive nuts. Can't help but wonder if Rick decided to try to give CRK a run for their money on designing an even simpler hard use knife with a "one up 'em" attitude/bonus of including the tool in the knife. 🤔😜 I agree with you wholeheartedly about the nub on the butt/pommel end of the handle being a bit too much. And I really hope Project X doesn't end up being the final production model name - it's petty I know, but I can't help that I hate the name, lol - but it's not a deal breaker. Feel like I would probably prefer a Skinny model of this knife @ 0.145" blade stock thickness. I also feel like it should have been a 3.5“ blade but I'm sure they made it 3.6" due to what they felt was the most appropriate handle size for this thing. In any case I'm defo gonna hold out for the final production version to release, so hopefully it's not too far in the future. And hopefully they do a MagnaCut variant. Between the specs and reviews, I feel like this knife could very well be the ultimate edc folder for "blue collar" working men and outdoorsmen.
I would guess it's because if you actually manage to break a Hinderer blade, you were absolutely, 100% using the knife in a way that it wasn't designed for. ESEE and other brands can do that because its WAY less expensive on their end to replace the blade (material, grinding, and heat treatment is all less expensive) and it's also far less likely because, in the case of ESEE, they're all fixed blades.
@@metal_complex Not even talking about a break. It's not common but some guys wear a blade down to where its pretty thick and they want a re-blade. one guy has gone through 3 blades on a Sebenza, used in a leather shop.
@@metal_complex Another thought on this, are they not doing loctite anymore or were they even before? I have not touched the pivot on my knives as they are extremely new
Hinderer's are great, and you did a great review, but I think they are still overpriced. Yes they are USA made, but $350 at best $425 price tag is just because they are in demand.
I dont know. Who are you asking? Who was supposed to know you had 5 XM 18s? Why exactly is that stopping you? A question that can only be answered by you.
I could see a smaller version of this knife with a 3.25” blade to slot between the XMs. It’s built with features that could scale down pretty well. They might have to adjust the pointy butt though. Also, I can’t get over how dumb the name is lol
I guess I don’t understand the deal with the hardware on this knife. Is the tool provided because the hardware is proprietary? If so, why bother using proprietary hardware at all?
I think it's the Metal Complex Effect, that's made Hinderers so hard to get.😂🤣😂🤣The higher your subscriber count grows, the shorter the time is that Hinderers stay in stock. 2-3 years ago when I got my Fullered Spear XM from DLT they were in stock for a couple weeks if not a month, now in 2022 anything folding Hinderer is sold out in minutes. Some fixed blades stick around a couple days, maybe a week. Thanks

Absolutely love mine so far, been in my pocket since I got it, Hinderer texturing may be my favorite titanium texture.
"Opening more packages that contain more knives" -- Guilty, your honor !
This is the first Hinderer that I've seen and actually wanted so your right on coming over to your side.
The project X is awesome I carry mine every day I’ll be getting another one soon

That would be my first hinderer. Love the looks, and the tool/backspacer makes so much sense.

As always, great review! I’m definitely a Hinderer fan. They even make their own screws. Very high quality knives.
LOVE that blade shape! Awesome!
I need one of those!
What a beast! My XM-18 3” is becoming so elusive these days. Still hoping we see some drop soon. Thanks MC!

Would love to see the size compared to a AD20.
Good idea

Your MP2 is exactly what I want: Satin blade with Flytanium Scales. Any complaints about the aftermarket scales on it, or is it really a great combo?

One thing I’ve come to like about the hinders is the generous finger choil this one does not have it it’s a pass
I have 10x the number of comments complaining about the choil. Its an individual preference thing.
Beautiful piece, not a big fan of the bump on the end of the handle, just seems unnecessary.

"Proprietary". C'mon man. Familiarize yourself with common fasteners.
The tool is supplied so the user can make adjustments on the fly, or do a full tear down while away from home with no tools.
