  • Logan Gillihan treks out to Ohio to spend the day with Rick Hinderer who's not only a leading Knife manufacturer, but also a Coal Ironworks press owner and a world renowned blacksmith!
Rick and his right hand man, Sam Rita, take us through their process of making some of America's best manufactured blades around! After an awesome tour of the facility, Rick takes us out to his personal forge where he's working on getting back to his roots and start forging steel once again.

I just got my first Hinderer blade a few weeks ago, the Eklipse with some copper hardware. It’s amazing!

There is a reason why nobody was in the sharpening station, knives are about as sharp as a metal pipe

No wonder you can't keep em' in stock, your shop's small... might have the latest, greatest, but you don't have them in the numbers for keeping them in stock as much as people would wish... for example, Eklipse Swedged Spear Point CPM Magnacut... was signed in to my account, had the item I wanted on the screen, FDE & Bronze , I was signed in & had my payment method stored... as SOON AS THEY DROPPED I added it to my cart and went right to check out. Before I could finish checking out a notification popped up notifying me that the quantity (ONE) that I requested was no longer available. Didn't even empty my cart and went right back to bookmarks and got the Blue G10 and Anodized blue in my cart ... that's the first one I bought. I'm not completely happy with it... I'm tired and I don't want to get into the negative right now. But it's mainly lock stick!!!

Cuz I don't know if I should go back to the place I purchased it or to the manufacturer???

Absolutely. Terrible heat treat as well. And one of the worst warranties in the game at that price point.

I have an old Hinderer and it is bulletproof. But I bought a new ekipse 3.5 and the quality has really got bad on these knives. My buddy has one and holding them side by side and there are noticeable size tolerance differences in both knives. It seems like their manufacturing is inconsistent with the same knife made at different times.

horrible non-existent customer service, owner threatens customers (check out transparent knives).
i had one knife from this guy (xm-18 skinny) and it was absolutely atrocious, detent was a joke, blade was so off-center that it scratched the liner every time i opened or closed the knife.
imagine paying over $450 and getting a faulty product and then ON TOP the owner / company not answering your emails for 3 months, asking for a warranty repair.
don't recommend, there are plenty of other american knife makers who actually stand behind their product.

Interesting. I just received my XM-24... it is literally perfect, and now my favorite blade. I sent an email to RH Customer Service regarding the weight of the knife listed on the website (mine was heavier that what was listed), and received a very timely comprehensive response. NO complaints.

@@Supertrack238 i think my mistake was that i mentioned being not from the usa but from switzerland, they probably went "ah who cares, he can't do much anyway".
i now buy emerson, hogue and microtech, at least i get my money's worth with their products.
but i'm glad yours is fine, i would've given them another chance if they had answered my emails.
      best regards

@@TH-cam-Censorship-Police I started with my Emerson commander - I have several, but they are SO hard to sharpen... the 35-37 degree chisel grind is difficult for me to sharpen. I have a couple of Hogues (their factory is just 45-minutes away from me). I have only one Microtech - haven't gotten too much into that line yet... but I probably have mostly Cold Steel's... love those knives. They are tough.

@@Supertrack238 that's nice! i just bough a mini commander and a market skinner last week, both awesome pieces but i'm not looking forward to sharpen the mini commander either.
regular emerson chisel edges i sharpen with a guided system, that works pretty well as long as it isn't a recurve or hawkbill blade.
cool that you live only 45 minutes away from hogue, i think my wallet would suffer heavily in your case😂
i love cold steel too, great knives, recon 1 clippoint, tuff-lite and 4 max scout are my favorites.
microtech i can only carry the small ones (we have caly laws for autos here in switzerland), i have 2 exocets and a mini troodon, the exocets are very handy. i also have 2 microtechs with a ram lock, a msi and a stitch, both great pieces if you like bigger folders.
what is your favorite hogue knife?
