I've said this a bunch of times! Nobody cares what's under the hood of an Eclipse anymore, and they haven't even since the 4Gs were being sold. All those Fast and Furious fans who idolized the Eclipse are mostly grown adults now and might very well be in the market for a sensibly priced electric coupe. There really isn't anything like that on the market. All the lower priced electrics look like LEGO cars. If Mitsubishi could maybe beef up their MiEV platform, they could launch a new Eclipse that looks like a sports car and drives like a Prius and I bet you it would sell. If they want to launch a performance car they can resurrect the Lancer Evo (spoiler alert: they don't), but I think the Eclipse would make a perfect electric. It's been decades since the Eclipse was any type of a performance sports car, so who cares if it runs on batteries?
@@AJ-xr4nc B too expensive to make it electric..best bet is for fucking Renault-Nissan 2 get their heads out of their ass n combine all 3 companies n make a sport coupe from all 3 to compete with the Toyota/Subaru sport coupes.
Bar tail lamp were famous among the 80-90s. Audi, Mitsubishi, Porsche did that when we were born. Its not new. Its quite old. It just comes back. Car designers run out of ideas. Fashion Clothing is repaeting itself also. Shoganai.....
Well done. I'd love to see the front too. In my opinion, the front of the car looked killer, even today. I'd love to see your take on a modernization of that.
I would SO buy this over the current "Eclipse" that Mitsubishi is selling right now. Would you be willing to modernize the 1957 Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa? (Preferably the front view)
Beautiful redesign!! Can't wait to see the part 2 for the front end redesign! Mitsubishi just did an "unforgivable sin", reviving an icon but as 100% something else than what the name actually inherit of... And to add more pain/sin on that, Mitsubishi doesn't care about our opinion anymore.
what i would love to see, is a try to completely convert as much of the Eclipse Cross as possible, back into the oldschool Coupe model, without specifically looking back at the previous generations outside of key details, like the rear-side window styling etc.
I think it would be super interesting to see a video based on if you had your own car company. What would be key elements that you’d want to implement in your automobile line up? Or maybe do a design based on what you’d want your brand to look like.
All the more reason for them to make passionate cars IMO. They shouldn’t care about sales and focus on the passion of an enthusiasts car. Unfortunately I don’t think they will take that approach anytime soon.
I had a sketch idea for you: A couple of days ago someone on Reddit posted a photo of their Model 3 parked next to a '65 mustang. Got me thinking: what would a pony-car designed by tesla look like? With that long front end and a sweeping back? I know you've mentioned you don't really like how newer EV's have very stubby front ends, you could explore how it would look with a longer nose, but that nose could also sportier and lower since it doesn't need room for an engine up front!
Hey, I drive one of these here in Sweden! It's the '99 model though, with the updated bumpers, skirts and headlights. Great job on the redesign! Just FYI though, the Eclipse is actually more of an American car than a Japanese one, as it was co-developed with Chrysler for the American market. The 4G63 engine, however, is of course very Japanese. Anyway, great video!
I own 2 1996 eclipses, they’re beautiful and need no change, but if a new one came out in 2021 and it was a nice coupe like the 2g I would take it in a heartbeat.
Mitsubishi still exists because the company is enormous and very old. They've been half assing their auto division lately but they definitely have more than enough money to restart it and make it successful again if they wanted to.
I love your channel and this car, I think it would be cool if you could mix the subaru outback with the subaru svx. Good job with this redesign by the way!
I would have liked to see you do something with the front end... the very iconic hood with "power riser" and the front bumper. Your redesigned rear end looks very similar to a 240, very Nissan. I think one of the things that was so special about the Eclipse was the round body lines. Giving everything a straight line or a hard edge isn't very Eclipse-like. I think the car needs a more retro exterior, keeping closer to the original but maybe a more wider aggressive stance, better defined wheel arches and a redesigned interior. If the powertrain was updated, a slightly tweaked exterior with more modern features (like LEDs, side markers, better mirrors, camera systems, etc.) Couple that with an optional trim levels. Like a retro trim featuring the gap-tooth reverse light license plate housing, a large sweeping wing (or whale tail) and powered rear fender mounted antenna. Or a more modern approach with a "duck bill" rear lip, center mounted stubby antenna, etc.
Can't believe I have to wait till November to give you one more challenge (After 1 year of asking), so anyway... As I said - with challenges: Modernize a VW Type-3 Squareback but coloured in Peanut Butter and Jelly colours... Guess why?
I think this was beautiful. I feel as though this year eclipse didn't have an identity. The 1999 and early 2000s DID, but this year the whole "imma bubbly girls car with a manual transmission" was what this car screamed. We didn't need that because we'd already had it with the Celica and then later on with Hyundai's Tiburon both of which I would choose over this year eclipse any day. The eclipse was a great car just not a great Japanese car. The Evo was ALWAYS and always is the more desirable Mitsubishi in my opinion because it had an identity and did it well. I think they tarnished the Eclipse name by making it a crossover and I would love If they would have done what you did and just Modernized it like Nissan did with the new Z car. Great video as always. Love popping my head by and watching these videos.
I agree they tarnished the eclipses reputation but a 2g eclipse was always better than the celica or tiburon at the time. U could get awd, 210 hp and the 4g63t in a nice package. After this gen the eclipse became the celica and tiburon, slow fwd and boring.
If the Eclipse came back, it would have to be a joint venture with some other company the way we have Subaru BRZ and Toyota GT86. That original Eclipse was the same as the Eagle Talon and Plymouth Laser. If they could find another company that has a good, cheap, AWD platform that could be made into a cheap sportscar, that's what the new Eclipse should be. Stellantis might have something like that again if you dig through all of those companies.
Unfortunately you are very right. Mitsubishi has turned into a choice just for the family friendly eco brigade. As someone who has owned a legendary evo x, it's breaks my heart to see that they no longer present at least a contender for a what can be considered an awesome car now. Honestly I'd be happy for the evo name to return in the format of a pure electric car with 4wd and the equivalent of 500-600hp. Any thing really so mitsubishi can say to its fans, hey we are still a solid choice when it comes to the preformance market.
Wow, A complete makeover with a zest of evolution and beautiful . Could you redesign the the original Honda NSX? I think the new one has nothing in common with the original model.
the only thing i didn't agree with this redesign was the tail lights i personally think that the should be thicker but still loks awsome and i want to see a redesign of the front end please
Absolutely agree Mitsubishi’s is selling cars to people that really don’t care or know anything about cars . To me , Mitsubishi as a car brand Just gave up several years ago .
+TheSketchMonkey the eclipse is not a Japanese import. Its 100% us market car. Designed in america, built here. All of the ones actually in Japan, and there were very few, are American Imports.
Heres my idea, we we petition Mitsubishi to bring back the eclipse as a tesla style electric car called the "E-clipse"

Day 10 of asking TheSketchMonkey to redesign the Lancia Stratos please.

Yeah, You're right. I'm so sorry for the Mitsubishi. I don't know what just happened to all of that passion!! All gone :(
They don't care anymore. Mitsubishi doesn't really need to make cars they do tons of other stuff that gives them more money.
Never ceases to amaze me that you can explain to me why I like a car in ways that I don't even know yet
Dsm's were not Japanese imports. They rolled off the assembly line in Normal Illinois
The Japanese companies should put out "modern vintage" concepts (90s inspired) like American companies have successfully done for their 60's icons
I love that idea, but I would love to see some cars from the 80's too! It would be amazing!
I think u should also add the "Eclipse" below the tail lights, just like the original had

Every automotive company should bring you in just prior to finalizing a vehicle for production, for you to correct the designers flaws.
Look great, but I just think more people would rather see a front view of almost every redesign.
