Skarmory: edgy metal sky-rat of hatred Mantine: Soft, cuddly, friend-shaped water pal Sure Skarmory wins fights, but Mantine is the one you take home to show your mom
I genuinely like Mantine's design. I always have a soft spot for those obviously friendly pokémon. Honestly I wish Mantine had gotten Drizzle instead of Pelipper, I like mantine so much more.
ohh on one hand that is an AMAZING pun, and on the other it actually kinda fits with skarmory's 'dex entries mentioning its "metal" hide comes from...... well, scabbing over due to rubbing against brambles, which is kinda fucked up and doesn't make much sense but hey! it's a bird made of metal so 🤷
Fun fact: Mantine is in the ZeroUsed tier in GSC! 3 weeks ago there was a big shift in GSC ZU due to PU updating its VR. In the end ZU got Aipom, Beedrill, Charmeleon, Eevee, MANTINE, Poliwhirl, Omanyte, Slowpoke, Staryu and Voltorb. So yeah, GSC Mantine is in the same power level as Eevee and Voltorb
Hello it's your resident Go player to talk and how the featured mon functions in that game. Mantine is actually one of the strongest pokemon in standard pokemon go pvp formats. Pvpoke, one of the largest universal resources ranks it as a top 5 pokemon in the great league. You might be thinking huh why is that? The reason is that, Manine is a water type and a flying type that can use the defensive benefits of both to let it beat other water and flying types as well as most other pokemon. It's able set itself apart from mons like peliper as in Go pokemon have only 2-5 charge attacks they can run, peliper lacks a good spamable flying move and relys more on water stab to do damage. Mantine uses flying and ice mons to create a deadly combo of coverage beating mons like Anlilape, Vigoroth, Azumaril, Swampert, Atlaria, Gligar and the list goes on. Mantine generally struggles from competition from similar pokemon and its typing that can make it become hard countered by many pokemon
huh, i havent played in a while but i remember lanturn performing really well in great league and i’m surprised it doesn’t just eat mantine alive. v happy for the manta ray though :)
Electric Pokemon are also fairly uncommon due to the CP limit favoring bulk over power. The best Electric type is Lanturn at rank #26 and the next best is *Charjabug* at #48.
Here are some other things that separates the Chad Skarmory from the Virigin Mantine: - Skarmory's steel typing also makes it immune to sandstorm and given the prevalence of Tyranitar throughout almost every generation, that's huge. - Skamory's steel typing was good when it resisted ghost and dark, and is still very valuable with the introduction of the fairy type. Back when the dragon typing used to be oppressive, its resistance was quite important as well in OU. It's also immune to Toxic which is invaluable for a wall. - Skarmory got Roost first back in Gen 4 while Mantine got access to it in Gen 7. The TM straight up existed but was only given to the steel bird first. - Skarmory has Sturdy which made it a really good lead in Gen 5 OU with Custap Berry. - This may seem minute but Skarmory's Brave Bird is significantly more reliable for damage in spite of its unimpressive attack stat. It got that move back in Gen 4 while Mantine only got its stronger flying type move in Hurricane in Gen 8 which still has iffy accuracy, and Mantine didn't even get Air Slash until BW2. Not that important in the grand scheme of things but still worth pointing out. - Skarmory has Taunt which is always a nice option for handling other walls and setup sweepers. Note that I actually really like Mantine but it's interesting to see just why the gap between the two in competitive play has been so wide for so long despite the few niches Mantine offers. Also as a side note, I think Mantyke has actually been pretty good in LC due to its massive base 120 Sp.Def stat which is a rare W for the fish.
It's interesting to note that in Gen 3 there's a team archetype called "Superman" where almost your entire team consists of flying or levitating pokemon in order to ignore spikes, the prominent entry hazard. Skarmory is being one of, if not, the best pokemon of Gen 3 OU will obviously be on these "Superman" teams, as your defensive wall. For a special defence wall on an all flying/levitating team you'd think Mantine could be a perfect fit, alas it's still completely outclassed by Blissey. Even in a team archetype that wants to have as many flyers as possible Blissey still has Mantine beat and does a better job. These teams would rather just have Blissey tank entry hazards while walling than run Mantine and dodge them. Poor Mantine.
If I was Game Freak, I would've buffed it out even more during Gen 6! Here me out: Mega Mantine. It has an Octillery on its back. It gets some boosts in SpAtk (40), Speed (32), and Defense (28). Octozooka gets a buff (maybe 120 Power, 90 Accuracy, applies Soak to the target?) and it receives coverage from Octillery's learnset (Sludge Bomb, Sludge Wave, Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Psychic, Energy Ball, Charge Beam, and Thunder Wave). Also I'd give it Flash Cannon and Zap Cannon just because. As for ability, it'd either keep Water Absorb or get Tinted Lens or Storm Drain.
At the start of SS OU, Mantine had a cool Swift Swim sweeping set with Surf and Hurricane using Metronome as an item, but then people discovered that Metronome reverts back to 1x when it hits into protect or something is sacked to hazards, which plummeted its viability
It always sucks when they set out to designs mons like this but then put like 5 minutes of thought into it. Like yeah esp back then they weren’t designing with competitive in mind but they clearly wanted it to fill a certain role but then made no effort or even actively sabotaged it in that regard. Puzzling yet common gamefreak moment.
Mantine could probably see play in VGC right now on teams that want the Pelipper role, plus scald, but don't want to set rain... But it's not in the game...!
Just wanna throw this out here, but somewhat recently, HoopsandHipHops made a video giving some old mons new evolutions, and in that video, he gave Skarm an evolution. This scares me because the official competitive format is VGC, where Skarm sucks ass. Considering that, and it’s BST, that doesn’t even break the 500s, it a very plausible Pokémon to receive an Evo (which may give Mantine one too, which is nice). Tbh, I’m not ready for a reality where Eviolite Skarm is a reality, and a simple set of 252 HP/252+ SpDef walls the entirety of existence…
Mantine would have been amazing if it had reliable recovery, momentum control and effective offense in early gens. It got reliable recovery with roost but needs effective momentum control with flip turn.
gen 9 national dex i did successfully run mantine as a check to the newly released Walking Wake. it actually just owned for months against every sun OR RAIN team I encountered. the archetype was a bulky healing wish offense.
In actuality, Mantine and Skymory were the same against Raikou and stuff in gen 2. 70 special defense when two times weak to electric type is the exact same as 140 special defense and four times weak to electric type.
I remember for the longest freaking time I would constantly forget that Mantine was a flying type and was so confused why it was one, until I realised it was based on a freaking fighter jet, and the remoraid was there to be a mounted turret, and I have loved it ever since, I felt SO STUPID that it took me so long to figure out, but the concept is so good and I love it (plus extra points because I love rays)
I think you mixed something up, Skarmory is clearly the Fighter Jet. While Mantine is clearly Bomber class shaped. And while Remoraid itself is Gun based, they look more like detachable torpedoes under the bomber wings.
Thank you for this video xxx I love mantine she is sooo cute. I love her happy wing flaps. She became my favourite in my first game- Pokémon Colosseum. I can still hear the sound she makes "OOhOOhOOh" 💔 she should get an Evo...... But also that'd be inconsistent with skarmory because they're defensive mirror images of each other(?) I think icr
It has remoraid synergy like a Dragapult but lacks the moves for it... At this point, I wish they had stuck with the original angel/devil kite design, with Mantine being a later pokemon that got a totally different toolset. It would have been a brilliant Alola mon; there's plenty of room for two ray pokemon if we're going to have this many scythe weasels
I’ve noticed that Mantine’s stat spread is pretty close to a lot of other unfavorably-viewed Pokémon - Ledian, Fezandipiti, etc. I wonder, is Sp. Defense just a poor stat to have as your highest?
I feel like typing matters a lot more to special defensive Pokemon than their physical counterparts. Ice beam, thunder bolt, flamethrower, energy ball, psychic, moon blast/dazzling gleam… special attackers have more of a rainbow of viable coverage options. Plus there’s no special burn equivalent, and also no special version of intimidate. Your type needs to be GREAT not just good to make a specially defensive Pokémon work imo
What would have been a better type for Mantine? Water Steel would have been good, but it would be hard to justify without a redesign/dex entry changes.
it's worth mentioning that even in gen 3 where mantine was "viable", there was already an ou ranked bulky water/flying type that actually made progress. even on defensive teams gyarados is objectively better than mantine thanks to intimidate basically giving free bulk, having higher speed, way more offensive pressure, and after looking through their gen 3 moves i don't see a single good move mantine gets that gyara doesn't, while gyara also has taunt and t-wave which are both excellent. i'm even checking calcs and there's no electric hit that mantine eats which gyara doesn't also eat lol. the only value it has over gyarados besides water absorb is being a special attacker but it's so weak that skarmory could easily stall it with toxic, while gyarados can 1v1 skarm with taunt and hp rock
I remember running Mantine in my team in Crystal back in the day. Those stats allowed it to casually body a Thunder. Good to hear it gets a happyish ending.
With Megas being back on the menu come Legends Z-A i think Mantine is a prime candidate for a mega form. Change one of it's typings, bump its stats in some nice places (not too nice places though) give it a useful ability and watch it soar (and roost).
Honestly, once I found out that Mantine had similar stats to Skarmory, I really liked it. Also, Manta rays are cool. ^_^ A shame it isn't in Gen 9, though. Mantine would've loved Terastalizing.
Mantine could have been so good if they switched the Flying type to something else. If it was Water/ Poison instead, I'm sure it could have become a metagame staple like Skarmory, because it's literally just a better Tentacruel at that point. And Stingrays are literally poisonous already, so it would even make sense. It would overlap with Qwilfish, but they could have just removed that from the pokedex since it didn't do anything until it got a new form in gen 8. They could also have made Mantine into Water/Steel instead, I'm not entirely sure if they could have made that work with a Stingray design unless they somehow made it look like a Battleship mixed with a Stingray. Although, I think the real answer would have been to not make Mantine into Skarmory's counterpart, but instead have Quagsire be the counterpart, because those two together would be great at covering each other's weaknesses.
You can tell how old a Pokemon fan is based on them remembering that Skarmory and Mantine were version exclusives in G/S and that's why they're inverses of each other
Oof I was just playing legends arceus and got my love of this mon rekindled by the roaming man time alpha, been wondering why it’s considered a bad mon
For a comparison on just how mismatched this duo was on release, Skarmory was, of course, an OU staple as it would be until _Gen 8,_ where it finally got outpaced by another Steel/Flying bird with higher bst and a better stat spread. Meanwhile, Mantine has recently fallen to Gen 2 _ZU,_ being outpaced by such metagame threats as Golbat, Delibird, and _freaking *Ledian*._ And on the Water half of the coin, you have Poliwhirl being recently banned to ZUBL...

No, all of then just have really mediocre stats other than spdef
I feel like typing matters a lot more to special defensive Pokemon than their physical counterparts.
Ice beam, thunder bolt, flamethrower, energy ball, psychic, moon blast/dazzling gleam… special attackers have more of a rainbow of viable coverage options. Plus there’s no special burn equivalent, and also no special version of intimidate. Your type needs to be GREAT not just good to make a specially defensive Pokémon work imo
@@gameinsane4718 There's a special burn in Legends, though it might not be mainseries for a while.

They ought to buff Skarmory to match its counterpart
It’s a top tier Keldeo counter!
Loved to hear some Skarm hate from EWGF :3
Mantine is a very underrated pokemon and I hope it gets something in Pokemon legends za
In this house we love the sea pancake
It should honestly just be pure water type
So you’re telling me we were robbed of a baby skarmory in Gen4?
I wonder if it wasn't a victim of them overestimating how good trapping moves would be, after being nerfed from their gen one absurdity.
Don't they have only, like, to Pokemon Card?
I never even noticed it was a Skarm foil wtf.
Imagine if Mantine was Ground instead of Water.
It's Mantine's Misfortune, folks.
Mantine is so cute they should give it an evolution so it can hold eviolite pretty please Game Freak 🥺
