    I've had this rifle 2 weeks now. packaged with Vortex Crossfire 2 4-12X44 for $950. I added a decent quality sling, bag and bi-pod, totaled up at $1205, very happy with it so far. One thing to note, the mags are prone to jamming. Easy fix, put an extra turn in the spring, pull apart with care not to damage the tangs and also lube it. The trigger adjustment is a walk in the park too, nice feature at this price point. Works like a charm now. Very good accuracy at 100 yrds. Another great review Ozzie.

    I have the same rifle with a 3-9 scope. My 223 handloads with 55 gr Vmax bullets at about 3000 fps make a 1/2 MOA group at 100 yds. It does a number on ground hogs here in western Pennsylvania.
    It's been pointed out before that the magazines are easiest to load by pressing the rounds straight down past the feed lips. Not so easy trying to feed them in from the front.
    Also, the magazine that came with my rifle wouldn't feed properly until I trimmed a little plastic off the forward end of the feed lips. I called Ruger about the issue and they sent me a brand new magazine which worked fine.
    Overall, an excellent rifle. I also have one in 22-250 which I haven't shot much yet.

    I just bought this as my first rifle yesterday. I've been watching reviews and have seen some negative feedback. I was stuck wondering if it was the gun or actually the shooter himself..Glad to see it's the shooter! (and load.) Great review I appreciate it, you've got my sub!
    Here in America it's only $410 USD brand new.

    Thanks Ozzie for another rippa video. Just want to clarify on barrel twist, as I work in the barrel manufacturing industry here I'm Queensland. You're 100% correct, however the reason there is the option for slower twist (that don't stabIlize heavier projectiles) is that higher twist rifling wears the barrel out quicker, so you will be able to put more rounds through a slower twist barrel. A slower twist barrel will also yield slightly higher velocities however this is negligible.

    The shooting range where I go, for points, all bullet groups are measured center to center, NOT edge to edge. Edge counting only matters when using scoring rings on the target...grin...good shooting, mate!

      @samuelfitzsimmons8907 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh the price is bull shit! I paid $1500Aud for my CZ452 .22 rifle mind you i bought a leupold scope which was $400... but the gun alone with no extras is $1100.... the reason why they are so cheap is because its to prevent people who want to use it for the wrong intentions.... they make it expensive so its off putting to the buyer, and only people who need them will buy it. And yeah thats just a bolt action .22. Lever actions, pump, strait pull bolts etc are more expensive because they require less work to cycle how ever a cheap brand will mostlikely be cheap or as cheap as a standerd bolt gun. And for semo autos you need a certain license which you need a valid reason to own and again even more expensive.... now i know this sounds weird but i think our gun laws are perfect, only people you need them can buy them instead of want... and i feel safe with out laws cause idiots cant get them.... but yeah some things are bullshit and extreme... sometimes the US would be good hahaha but probs get murded lol

    The 223 is very efficient 22 cal cartridge, I can absolutely see why NATO adopted it, and back in the late 80's it started to gain momentum as a great cost effective professional Roo shooting cartridge (head shots only).

      Lol frl

    • @CDOES
      @CDOES 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I know this is a year old question. But owning both I would say that they are both excellent. The Ruger is more accurate with a broader variety of ammunition. The Mini action has a very short stroke and is fast to cycle. but the 90* throw isnt as clean as the Ruger's 60*ish which is extremely fast. The Ruger has better options for magazines now with the AR version which I have. Howa 10 rd magazines Ive had feed issues with. I like both triggers. THe Howa's i prefer for accuracy and the Ruger for everything else. Pound for Pound I think i prefer the Ruger a touch more.

    Nice shooting Aussie, I'm impressed but not surprised. I have one in 7mm 08. I bought a box of Hornady factory ammo 139gr White Tail. Shot a very poor 3 inch group. Hand loads, well 44gr of AR 2208 with a 139gr SST on top @2830 fps will put 5 rounds in a very cozzie cluster. These rifles shoot, given the right ammo.

      I’ve got the American Ranch rifle 16” that takes the AR15 magazines topped with the Redfield 2-7X33...from a bipod using NORMA 55gr. match ammo it will shoot sub 1” MOA (best was a little less than 3/4”) at 100 yards all day long. Using 10 round magazines (Lancer transparent are my favorite) make shooting from a bench a breeze 👍👍👍...if y’all can get the Ruger American with the AR15 magazines in OZ...you won’t be disappointed 😊😊😊...I do enjoy Ozzie’s reviews 👍

      I’m a Ruger fan but the Howa action is far superior to the Ruger American rifles. The Howa action cannot be beat for the money. Forged steel, one piece bolt, and excellent barrels. Here in the USA the Ruger American is I the best among the Savage, Mossberg, and Remington budget guns. A Howa 1500 in my opinion doesn’t come with frills but the construction of action and barrels are top notch.
      I can’t argue with the Ruger’s accuracy. That’s premium rifle accuracy from a budget gun.

    • @scipioafricanus1801
      @scipioafricanus1801 2 ปีที่แล้ว

If you're talking about accurate value for money - The Ruger American. If you're talk about an accurate high quality rifle - The Tikka T3 super varmint. So it depends on what you're looking for...

    Morning Mate. Any chance of reviewing RUGER AMERICAN® RIFLE HUNTER .223? Thinking on a PRS rifle that uses PMAG's. Browny..

    Been looking at one of these in 300 BLackout any chance of a review in the 300 blackout the sub sonic round interests me the most for shooting foxes at night atvb Steve

    • @MRxr400
      @MRxr400 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know much about the 300 blackout. Why use one for foxes instead of a 223 or similar? is it a loudness issue being quieter? wouldn't be cheaper to run unless reloading would it? I like the 223 for cheap to run factory ammo, is pretty loud I guess, and point and shoot out to 200M, which I normally get my foxes to come in much closer without a problem.

      Scott Mac yes mate it's more of stealth thing mate , my local gun shop has one of these in 300 blackout they are very quiet with a good can on them from what I seen on TH-cam, atb Steve

      Probably not at this stage as it'd only be a calibre change, not actual rifle/model change...

      Oh well atleast it's a cheap rifle so you can always argue about how much you saved by buying it over another brand/model!

    Is it expensive to reload ammo in Australia , are there restrictions on components ? Or are they common .
    A Ruger American is about the best production rifle the U.S. makes. Not bad , huh !

    • @bundyboat6938
      @bundyboat6938 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Queensland as long as you have a shooters license you can buy powder. We’re required to sign a declaration at the gunshop saying we will only use the powder for reloading. Powder costs about $50 for 500g (1lb), small primers $55 for 1000, projectiles and brass are mostly imported and are expensive eg 450 bushmaster is a new caliber here so everything’s pretty expensive hdy brass $90 for 50, xtp mag projectiles $65 for 50, cheapest would be Berry’s hard cast 452 230g $200 a 1000
      I get lead free so I mold and powder coat 452 projectiles which makes it a lot cheaper.
      So no real restrictions on components as long as you have a license. Powder and ammo aren’t allowed to be delivered in the post, and they have to be locked up in a safe which is separate from the gun safe.
      Common calibers like 223 and 308 are cheaper
      I guess when you factor in the no semi autos here we put a hell of a lot less ammo thru our guns, so my 3 rds thru a bolt action is way cheaper than your 30 round bursts
      ...I wish I lived in USA

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Lithgow shoots more accurately overall with various ammo, but the Ruger with those OSA rounds would be hard to beat.

    I had the Ruger American in 308 great gun but i sold it for about 100 dollars more you can get a Weatherby Vaguard 2 series wich is a better built rifle.

      Taz I tried Ruger America Predator in 223 and 243. Got rid of them. Weatherby S2 in both calibers far more consistent. $150 more in USA. BUT.. S2 too heavy to lug around. Range gun.

      Abanoub Daoud I have one of these in 308. She loves the Aussie Outback 165gr Gamekings. Old mate has reviewed a couple of other Howa's already and what he said about them is pretty much true for the Vanguard. Good bang for your buck.

    I had one of these and it blew the extractor off after 3 shots with factory ammo and ruined a hunting trip. Had to bring it back to cleavers and they processed a warranty claim through NIOA. Very disappointed and for me paying the extra $400 for a tikka was worth it looking back. CHEAP FOR A REASON

    • @ozziereviews
      @ozziereviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There isn't a brand of rifle that doesn't suffer quality problems eventually. Couple of years ago Sakos were going back. I ve taken a Ruger m77 back to get the ejector adjusted once but then just bought another one this year. People are too emotional over guns. If your car has one mechanical fault do you immediately buy a new one? Lol.

    take a cheap USA rifle pay conversion and importing costs, tax etc, importer/wholesaler profits and costs. retailer profit and costs and soon it is no longer cheap but reviews suggest a great rifle but mods cost so much with the import costs and various wholesaler/importer costs added in making things ridiculous high. Not just shooting problem has been an issue for fifty years from my experience and low local manufacture guarantees this. no way is leupold budget scope really?

    Nice video... but stop using the word cheap... you need to use the word inexpensive. Cheap is junk quality... inexpensive is low cost. You confuse the reader... giving the impression of cheap quality. Shoot lots and stay safe.

    the 243 is a much better all round caliber

    • @EnkeiTenjin
      @EnkeiTenjin 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      And it costs a whole lot more to run. And it's too loud, and it's too powerful. Each calibre has its own use. 243 is a FANTASTIC all round cartridge. If you had to own only 1 rifle, I admit, 243 is probably the one to get. But if you have a few rifles, 223 is cheap, powerful for varmints, no recoil, can be shot without hearing protection (although still recommended). 243 barks, just like 308. I'm not gonna pretend I'm tough enough to take the volume blast of a 308 case filled with 35gr+ of powder every time I pull the trigger. No thanks. Each calibre has a place.
