2 GREAT Hikes on the Grand Balcon, Chamonix [France Travel]

  • We explore two fantastic day hikes from Chamonix, France! The first is a continuation on the Grand Balcon Nord - find out whether we made the Montenvers train back down to Chamonix, or whether we hiked all the way down! Then we head to the other side of the valley to hike Grand Balcony Sud (named for its position on the mountain, but it's located north of Chamonix!). There are incredible views across the valley to Aiguille du Midi, and wild blueberries that we spend too much time picking.
We highly recommend both hikes - the north one facing Aiguille du Midi would best be done on a clear or mostly clear day, because the views are spectacular.

Thanks for the tip on lift passes. Along the same lines, did you use passes to get from the airport to Chamonix?

You're welcome! No, we used Sncf rail website to book a BUS from Geneva (we actually have a 2nd Chamonix video; if you haven't seen it yet, it shows how we got there).

Aside from hiking, would you say that a full day is enough to explore Chamonix? Thanks. Great video as always.

Thank you! It's so hard to say whether 1 day is enough. It depends on how many gondolas and train rides you go on. You can see a lot without hiking! (but we do love to hike 😁)

Hi.. Great video and a great tip for multi day pass. Just a small question, if we buy the multi day pass, do we get access to all cable cars and the Montenvers train ? And would be great if you can attach the online booking site for the tickets :)

It does include Montevers train! The only thing it did *not* include was the cable car that went from France to Italy. We had to purchase that separately (and it's definitely worth it!).

Hi, lovely videos. I'm travelling to Chamonix 2nd week of August. Any tips on where to start hiking as a novice? greatly appreciate any info. Thank you.

The easiest hike is the waterfall one we do in our first Chamonix video! It's not on a mountain, but it's nice. Then, in terms of difficulty, I'd do Grand Balcon Sud (the 2nd hike in this video). It's pretty much from Point A to Point B. If you're in decent shape but not a hiker, it's definitely doable! Just give yourself time so you don't have to rush. The first hike from this video is HARD. If you're in good to great shape, it's no problem though - even with no hiking experience (again, take your time). Enjoy!!

Great video! Would you recommend the sud/nord for less experienced, elder people ? I'm visiting with family that is 55 - 65 yrs old with little to no experience hiking. I'm primarily worried about parts that are technical. This is so scenic, I'd love to take them!

The Grand Balcon Nord - I would NOT recommend for someone with no experience in the age range you mention, if they're not in good shape. It's not technical, but it is very tough on your knees and ankles. Grand Balcon Sud is the easier of the two paths, but I'd still say it's moderate. There's a steep stairway and some mild boulder walking. The good news is that you can take the lift up, walk a half hour or so, turn around, and go back down the lift! The gondolas really help to make the area more accessible. This area is worth the challenge - it's SO scenic!

Great video you two! Beautiful scenery, great acting, excellent camera work and editing. The 3 day pass is a great tip! Chamonix is definitely on the list for our next trip to France. Merci!
