My brother used to work at Hoosier racing tire in Indiana USA When I was a teenager, now my brother's no longer with us, but it was still a good memory after seeing those tires in this video. I may buy one just for those tires now.
Don't give them dingle dongs your money! You can get just the Hoosiers from proline, and then you get to pick soft or softer compound too. Just don't make the mistake I did and get 2.2 tires (shorter) instead of 2.2/3.0 short course size.
I wouldn't expect these to be very popular anywhere but in the USA, where local racing tends to be on small, dirt oval tracks. If you want to race RC on a regular basis in more rural areas of the US, you'll probably be running ovals in one of the Mudboss classes. Two really cool things about the classes are that they're tightly regulated, which keeps costs reasonable and racing close, and that the cars resemble their 1:1 counterparts, giving people the chance to drive scale versions of what they run at the local 1:1 tracks.
Keep the cost down is what this car does not do. The foams wear out really quick in the tires and end up ripping the tire in half. And if it's designed for beginners and to keep it cheap, they wouldn't have a new body cost $140 usd, for a new set of tires it's $60 usd. The front body clips pop off the second you get in a crash and the lexan breaks super easy. Right there is already half the price of a brand new car and all you've bought is wear parts designed by traxxas. They definitely need to step up the game in the foams in the tires and figure out how to make a body system that stays attached, especially if your going to be racing it.
It's popular here in Australia to not on the US level but it's around I've seen the full size mudbosses there called (V8 dirt modifieds) for sale on marketplace a few times an some small country towns here take dirt oval racing pretty full on.. also theres RC tracks around here that host 1/10 & 1/5th scale oval racing classes in Brisbane, Queensland where I em
@@connorclark8541 that's the traxxas way, not the overall Dirt Oval RC way in NA and Australia. You will see plenty of TX Bandit and Slashes converted for MudBoss racing due to how cheap a used chassis is, but if you are buying all new the 1/18 scale sprints and modifieds are where it is at and you can have a full competitive race rig with spares for around $400 at that scale and as I said, a used slash or bandit can get you started as well. 1 Racing makes tons of chassis kits for reasonable prices and stock class electronics are very reasonably priced...don't mistake Traxxas standards for what the OP was trying to say.
This car is supposed to replicate a style of racing on a clay surface. These cars have massive power and are literally driven sideways and on 3 wheels most of the time. Im really impressed by how well they designed this thing. This is a new find for me and this video has convinced me to get back into R/C. Great video. 👌🏻
One thing that's nice about that Slash is the wider wheels and tires. The typical ones are too narrow. Traxxas can keep their clip-less bodies!! They can also keep all of the modules you need to buy to get all of the features they offer.
Preach! I call them self removing bodies. My Xmaxx body ejects itself at the slightest hint of a crash. I spend a much time chasing out around putting the body back on as I do bashing. Crazily enough tho, my very scale looking TRX6 G63 that a clipless body would make sense and actually work has body pins and clips sticking out looking ugly.
I run a 2wd short course truck with a VXL motor, EZRUN MAX10 esc same as the one you put in this, a blue LCG chassis, RPM a-arms, camber links, bumpers, and wheel hubs. Steel Hot Racing gearing at 14 pinion/60 spur, and a Team associated reciever/remote setup. Proline gladiator tires, too. You put time into th3se lcg chassis and they are A BUNCH of fun!

We (dirt oval racers) were mad at Traxxas because they named it the Mudboss when it just wasn’t a Mudboss. Our actual Mudboss class is based on real life Big Block Modified cars, while the Traxxas Mudboss is based on UMP modified cars, a completely different class irl. And it’s also confusing to be running a Traxxas Mudboss class and real Mudboss class in the same set of races. I live down the street from Traxxas McKinney, their HQ and biggest retail store, and interestingly, the boxes still say Mudboss instead of modified. The McKinney store would be the first one to get the new boxes because it’s also their distribution center, so I don’t know if they actually are changing the name to Modified.
I didn't know the full details, so that's interesting to know....Also with the boxes not being changed, Imagine if it was a big company that owned the Mudboss name, Traxxas would have changed the boxes straight away.
The tread design is what make the tyres screech like that, anything with a relatively soft compound and blocky tread will do it. Cheap tyres from China are particularly good at it! Not only is it a cheap thrill it means you don't have to give Traxxas any money 🤣
I've been racing one of these on dirt since they released and they are a blast! We average 15-20 cars every Friday night. The local guys are trying to get an asphalt track going for them as well. (and for speed, clean the grease out of the transmission!)

Hehe, what can I say, I don't like the looks, but the screeching tires are funny! You just need to belt the tires with some gaffer tape inside and they'll be fine. I've done that with two of my trucks already, works perfectly! Gorilla tape is the expensive option.

A decent clay surface can give traction as good as a good smooth concrete with a sugar water coating. On a well swept and dampened Clay tennis court they would be awesome. Many years ago I tried it with 1/8" nitro Pan car. GT body and a home made sprint car style wing. We never really gave it much of a chance though as it tore up the tennis court to much. 1/2 hour of practicing took a day to repair.

Nice work as always. I think a more powerful motor is the go. There used to be a dirt oval speedway over the road from where I live. It was there for around 70 years.
I think the motor is restricting the potential. I’m gonna throw the matching hobbywing motor in. Same Kv… so would be interesting to see if it goes faster 👌
The front suspension is way too binding. You can see in the closeup when the cornering leans the wheel off the ground, the a arm does not drop keeping the tire off the ground. Might be designed that way to facilitate sliding around for it's class racing but freeing the suspension and proper shock and spring tuning might turn it into a road holding champ.😮
I think a big reason is possibly scale realism, as the actual modified lifts it’s left front in the corner. And yeah it may have something to do with helping it slide.

True fan boy protecting the traxxas from his on daughter lol Maybe put the body on an arrma or team associated sc and see if it fits better, would be hilarious
That body just isn't aero enough. I THINK taking some plastic tree pieces to brace the rear body a bit, and maybe use a harder plastic for the rear wing. Too much flopping about will cause too much drag......just my two cents though lol
Because it's a slash 2wd, does that mean It still has different offset for front and rear wheels, or because it's a slash "modified" has traxxas put different A arms on the front
But Phil, I was at a local Traxxas authorized shop here and they have brand new brushed cars with the clipless body now. They did this very quietly, but still only $210 usd
So I’m thinking if tomley bought one ☝️ maybe I should . I grew up going to local NY oval river head Freeport and white lake . So being into RC thought about buying mudboss but I feel same way as tomley about traxxas and have slashes for years I don’t fix or use anymore . I thought maybe I should get one from salivas. But than again like tomley I really just want to screech the tires 🛞 on black top 😂 . Also the Mojave wheels are good for screeching I can put up a nice show with the noise to add . Rambling sorry “ where is there an oval RC track in Newyork ? I’m on Long Island 🏝️
So I have seen a few in the US where they make up extra side posts to push the body out a little bit and that seems to take care of it, next for you order the original Mudboss kit and all required parts buy a two wwheel drive Slash or a 4WD and see what the difference really is, I would race this if it was a race series here in the UK, I built a 5th scale one on my HPI 5B/SC chassis it was fun but no one here in the UK was interested in creating a race sereis even though an oval track is the easiest to create I am now digging through my mountain of 5th gas junk trying to find the body cage and tyres.

I wonder if adding a windshield would help or hurt the top speed? May add some top speed stability?
i have one and set it up like a real modified dirt car and and upgraded everything its sooo much fun we also built a replica oval dirt track and me and my buddys race them every weekend
The SBR2 will go over 60 without lifting as its so damn heavy lol..but keeping it straight is challenging.
True fan boy protecting the traxxas from his on daughter lol
Maybe put the body on an arrma or team associated sc and see if it fits better, would be hilarious
Great video as always 👌🏻
Thanks mate, I might get this to Rossa next year , see how fast it’ll go before taking off 😅
@@TomleyRC I do like that car and setup, looks cool!
Interesting to see it run through the traps at Rossa 😬🕺🏼
That body just isn't aero enough. I THINK taking some plastic tree pieces to brace the rear body a bit, and maybe use a harder plastic for the rear wing. Too much flopping about will cause too much drag......just my two cents though lol
Because it's a slash 2wd, does that mean It still has different offset for front and rear wheels, or because it's a slash "modified" has traxxas put different A arms on the front
But Phil, I was at a local Traxxas authorized shop here and they have brand new brushed cars with the clipless body now. They did this very quietly, but still only $210 usd
Yes, they have added it to most of their range now
I race the mudboss class. Salvas was gonna sue them.
He should have!
I want the tires.... do they fit an arrma 3s blx
Just when I think Traxxas couldn’t make anything uglier, they come through with this!
can you try to put those wheels on the traxxas rally slash?
Good video. Is ftx any good?
FTX are good yes 👍
@@TomleyRC thanks mate I’ve just ordered a ramraider
We have a circle track here in New York not far from me. that we just run them specifically. Real good time.
Sounds good 👌
So I’m thinking if tomley bought one ☝️ maybe I should .
@ Shawn , where do we have a track upstate for these guys ? I was thinking I could travel off peak if not to far up 🆙
That’s to funny! Got traction on concrete! Lmao
The Lego Hoosier tires make this same sound, it must just be the shape of the tread and profile of the tire
What video editor and music do you use please??
Final Cut Pro & Epedemic Sound
Thanks
We have a fairly unused CycleSpeedway Oval here, Cindersurface goodness.Just have to sometimes fight off some zombies .
The Zombie battle is always a task!
Great videos, man!
We DO say "cut off your nose to spite your face" here in NEW England.
Sorry if you've answered this before... Why 'Tomley' RC?
traxxas makes the best cars.
Is that a metallica Shirt? 🤘
Yes :)
I love the irony and the fact that the TRAXXAS fan boys have to watch you do a review video with the original name on the box😂😂
lol… although it seems they haven’t changed the name on the box for any yet 🤷🏼♂️
@@TomleyRC not on your side of the pond😂😂
I love your vids tomley!
😇🫡
@@TomleyRC NO WAY YOU REPLIED :O
Here in California we do loads of mud boss racing
So I have seen a few in the US where they make up extra side posts to push the body out a little bit and that seems to take care of it, next for you order the original Mudboss kit and all required parts buy a two wwheel drive Slash or a 4WD and see what the difference really is, I would race this if it was a race series here in the UK, I built a 5th scale one on my HPI 5B/SC chassis it was fun but no one here in the UK was interested in creating a race sereis even though an oval track is the easiest to create I am now digging through my mountain of 5th gas junk trying to find the body cage and tyres.
Yeah, the body certainly needs work! I think before going any date to need to secure it down a bit
BL-2S motor on 3S?
Hi Tomely. Been watching your videos casually amd now I’m knida interested in RC crawlers. Any recommendations for a beginner like me? (Not too expensive though)
That box is a collector's item now lol
Haha
That's so weird that it only goes 29mph. My 2wd slash with the same motor goes 36mph on 2s..... if I remember correctly. I think my pinion is a 19T
This has new transmission
I’ve had a few of the BL-2s cars and the all do late 20’s stock out the box 🤷🏼♂️
Must been going down hill 😝 , Tom remember when we did math calculations to figure out the speed . We put the tamiya gold in the ralley Celtica 24000 rpm’s the 540 were 19 I think
Er...ever hear of Stock Car racing and speedway? Both raced on dirt tracks. 😉
I was talking about RC Racing in the UK 😇
