I think the early spring has hampered the small sugar farms this year. Probably be a bad year for Maine Maple Sunday (weekend). Syrup over ice cream. I miss the old scenes of collecting sap with horses and a sleigh. Good I’m getting old.
Taylor around a laboratory a hydrometer is used to measure a liquids density. So, you Mom boils the maple sap down, boiling off water and concentrating sugars in the liquid, and using a hydrometer she knows when it is where she wants it to be.
Hi Taylor, well that was a big surprise. Showing us some of your personal life was a revelation. You spoke about collecting the maple sap from trees to make syrup and now we know how you do it. Your neice was just the right height to drink the sap. 😅 I liked you showed us the roads and the area you drive along on your way to work, it's so different compared to around the dairy farm. Thanks for letting us see a climpse into your life at home. Chris from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.
Good morning from Wisconsin where the weather is pretty much the same as you are in Maine. Thanks for a great video showing us a little of life at your home and on the farm. There is nothing better than living in the country. Keep smiling, stay positive, and send me a bottle of that maple syrup. (lol). You sure are a great role model for your niece.🐄😉🚜🇺🇸
Hi, so glad you enjoyed the video. I agree living in the country is definitely amazing! I wish I could share a bottle with u all!!😀 that’s SO sweet of you thank you!
My uncle built a boiler, scaled up plans from popular mechanics or something. Had lines run to stock tanks, and a 250 or 300 gallon tank on a trailer with a trash pump. Had at least a 500 gallon tank set overhead to gravity feed the boiler. I know someone out here in Nebraska who taps box elder trees. They're related to maples.
Thanks for sharing your maple syrup tapping process with us! Would like to see the finishing process! I think your niece has the right idea....just get it straight from the source!! I hope this early & wet spring is not a precursor to a dry and hot summer! Stay safe and dry!!!
Like the variety!!! Some folks in our part of Ohio are into making maple syrup. Takes a lot of hands and patience to gather sap and boil it down. It's a combination of an art and science checking the progress. Got a chuckle out of your niece tasting the sap. LOL Cherish the moment...they don't stay small for long.
I’m glad! Yes it is a time consuming and difficult thing to do but it also very rewarding, I guess it’s a lot like dairy farming 😂. She’s a character, I’m already experiencing how fast time goes by seems like just yesterday she was a baby 😟
Made syrup for years!! It's called a hydrometer! Tap on the south-east side, the sun will hit it early, and if the wind comes out of the west, and it's cold, it will shield the taps from the cold, and MAY run! One's a warming pan! Love the Bobsled!
I just love hanging out in the sugar house when they are boiling. To me that means winter is just about over and mud season is coming. I also hope this year us not as wet as last year was. Thanks for taking us along with you.
Your niece is adorable, she will remember spending time with you and your Mother for the rest of her life. Missed your group of dogs at your place. I hope Cinnamon gets better it is not fun when the calves get sick. I think we are still supposed to get another year of more moisture from the volcano eruption in the ocean. Hope you and family stay safe and healthy.
Very interesting. Adorable niece. Me thinks you should have started tapping the trees around mid-February. Too busy on the farm I guess. I'm thinking Ballard. might be a better road to take than your road - less muddy.
I'm on vacation out of town but still in the United States I've been keeping an eye on the weather in Maine I honestly didn't think it would be that great for gathering sap with the weather being kind of crapy.
Good morning Taylor and Brent finished watching video it’s awesome never seen milking trees before thanks beautiful and as always you both be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
Our local nature preserve makes syrup from maple trees on the property, then they have a waffle breakfast each year. That was last week-end. Mmmm good.
Another great video, sweetheart😊 for the first time in 20 years, we didn’t even bother sugaring this year. The weather we had really wasn’t the best for it anyway. Two years ago we had almost 8000 taps out last year. We were down to about 2000. We had one big sugar bush. It started getting them caterpillars so we had to give it a year off so we did not even bother, putting the taps, lines and vacuum out. Nothing but lots of rain down here even snow today stay dry and warm.🤗
Thank you!! That’s crazy isn’t it, things have just been so wet lately 😕. We had trouble with the caterpillar about 15 years ago, awful little creatures! Hopefully you dry out soon, we got a little snow here to but the rain took it all away ☺️
Great to see you milking something different from cows...😋🌳🌳 If you've got some spare time and want to learn how to lay a good weld get Brent to buy some hardox hardfacing rods and practice some runs on the leading edges of those chisel points, to get your hand in...
Hi Taylor, thank you for the video. Went to look at a place in Ripley on Friday. Google had me take Lane Road being a dirt road and it was clear the frost was coming out and did not know if we going to make it to the other end, thankful for 4x4 drive. Then on the way back to Pittsfield Google took us down a road that Brent's Farm is located on and had to slow down just before the barn and sheds due to the frost heave in the road. What a surprise, would have waved, yet no one was out side working. My 80 year old Dad was happy to see the farm still working and selling milk. He loves the old tie-up barns, and was impress it is still being used to milk cows. Then had to answer so many questions as how I knew these alleged facts without being in the place....lol. Your videos of course.
Being out in nature is always good for the soul ..birds animals trees flowers hills valleys water all of God's creation instead of cities roads etcetera your niece is quite a character
No we are very wet here got probably over 3 inches of rain this past week some of our fields look like small lakes, temperatures are about average low 50’s and it’s going to be very windy today and tomorrow good video Thanks for sharing your experiences!
Hey Taylor is it possible your not getting as much maple sap from one tree to the next is because you don’t have them facing the Sun? The one that’s almost full has the Sun shining on it, the other is on the Western side of the tree and not getting much Sunlight yet! I’m betting if you all switch to the eastern side of the trees, your production will go up!🎉❤❤❤😮
It was interesting to see there are still people out there that tap maple trees to make syrup I think its great watching your channel you have great content not many people your age are willing to do the kind of work you do keep the content coming I for one enjoy it.😊
Taylor I always thought maple syrup was a Canadian thing....lol. I am Canadian but I have never tapped trees for maple syrup because I live in the western part of Canada.
When it's really quiet in the woods, that's usually when the boogie man pops up from nowhere and scares you half to death. At least, that's what happens in the movies. Oh, wait. A video is a movie. BOO!!! 😊
Good Morning Taylor we have done tapping in the past but I am not saying for sure but here I the tempitures had some thing to do with the sap flow Hopefully you will have plenty great vid enjoy your day
just Hydrometer with a thermometer in it but its calibrated for a warm temp so you don't get uplift from crystals.... also called Brix and Baume or a Densimeter. Do y'all have a recipe for maple sap root beer?
Your the perfect daughter you still regard mom as mother. Mom does the maple sap operation with you assisting. Mother daughter, grandma, antie, granddaughter, niece. Only woman take care to pass along what really matters.
Idea for next video, sped up video of the barn organization. Love cleaning videos and a great shot of the end result. Just a thought. Oh, not judging. You should see mine. lol. Old, disabled.
That’s a great idea!! I know what ya mean. Something very satisfying about a dirty place becoming clean😃. It’s hard to keep things tidy sometimes isn’t it ☺️😉
Good Morning Taylor.....why make the hole smaller then the tap? This is way cool though the hole set up and stuff....alot of work but it looks like fun....i just love your video's dude keep them coming
Good morning, great question! If the hole is too big and the tap doesn’t fit snug then sap will leak around it.😊 it is lots of fun! But also tiring ☺️😉. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
😅 we changed it right before it broke down and hardly used it last season so not many hours put on it. as long as it still looks good we’ll probably wait until next fall to do another change. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😃
Have you ever used wheat straw for bedding, i bale dry straw and sell to my local dairy farmers in Manitoba Canada and they tried saw dust but not always dry and expensive
I bet that's fun making the maple syrup with your family. I grew up on pancake (high fructose corn syrup) syrup. 🤢 I believe that's a form of child abuse. Lol. Nothing but the real stuff for me.
as a kid , I used to help a friend in southern Maine collect from the trees. there was an older kid up the street who used to come along and pee in the collection buckets. a male thing. sniff em first. sorry.
Yes, depends on size of the tree. Usually 2 on larger trees, but have to take account the following year have to stager the holes....so that the tree can heal.

Ms. Tay keepin' it real!!!! keep farmin' ma'am!!
A great show, thank you Tay for showing us your place and the syrup process. Your niece was so cute. Hope we get to see more on the syrup making. 👍👏🐄
Hi Taylor it was so cute to see her drink from the tree

Very interesting. Good job. Ive never seen a child nursing from a tree.
Thanks for watching, yeah she’s something else ☺️

Fun video!! Always use new bolts on old sweeps,or they pull through.
I'm on vacation out of town but still in the United States I've been keeping an eye on the weather in Maine I honestly didn't think it would be that great for gathering sap with the weather being kind of crapy.
it is called a hydrometer
Good morning Taylor and Brent finished watching video it’s awesome never seen milking trees before thanks beautiful and as always you both be safe 🇺🇸🇺🇸
As a rule they say that tapping on the south side of the tree gives the best supply,
I do believe that sap season started early this year compared to other years.
Our local nature preserve makes syrup from maple trees on the property, then they have a waffle breakfast each year. That was last week-end. Mmmm good.
Have a cute niece, enjoyed the tour around the woods showing how to get maple sap out of the trees.
Good evening Taylor 💯✌🏻 that's so awesome!! Looks like a great time harvesting maple sap ... thanks for showing us 💯✌🏻💚🌱🔥

Thank you Taylor for showing us the maple syrup process. Got to visit a birch maple business in Talkeetna Alaska. Very interesting!
Thanks!
Dip glazed donuts into maple syrup add tastes really good
Thanks Taylor you always have interesting videos. Your road looks like a logging road.
I’m glad you like them, yeah it look a bit like a logging road😅. Definitely a year of mud!

Sustainable production,thank you Taylor!
Always looking forward to your next great video
The tools are a density column and a hydrometer. You are measuring the density of the sap/syrup.
No we are very wet here got probably over 3 inches of rain this past week some of our fields look like small lakes, temperatures are about average low 50’s and it’s going to be very windy today and tomorrow good video Thanks for sharing your experiences!

It's a brix thermometer for testing the sugar in the syrup
Hi Taylor thanks for another awesome video, thanks for showing us the process of making maple syrup very interesting. Take care and stay safe 😊.
Hi, my pleasure! Glad you joined me😀
Hey Taylor
When can you start tapin trees and when is the end?
In Germamy we have a wet spring like last year.
Thank you for sharing
You bet! Thank you for watching!
Very nice 🌌⭐
Thank you!
I was wondering about your farming. Are you just a farm hand or what is your background?
Mam u r doing great job i m very eager for doing such job i love this jib

Hi! Yep I believe you are right, temps play a big role in how well the trees run. Thanks so much for watching!
Hey Taylor. Very interesting video of syrup making we are not familier with the process here in corn country of Iowa. Stan. Ia.
just Hydrometer with a thermometer in it but its calibrated for a warm temp so you don't get uplift from crystals.... also called Brix and Baume or a Densimeter.

Your muddy roads look like ours!
Did we get donuts?
Do you have to worry about any bears bothering your taps?
Crazy weather . Pushaw lake is about out to .
Thanks for the video if you are interested I found a barn cleaner with little use on it tell me how to send it to you
You guys going to change the oil in the 1066 before the big plow day🤣😂👍🇺🇸
😅 we changed it right before it broke down and hardly used it last season so not many hours put on it. as long as it still looks good we’ll probably wait until next fall to do another change. Thanks for watching 👍🏻😃
we could use some of your rain here in northeast kansas
hi Taylor it is Harlow and Layla we miss you it is almost summer break we will came to the farm this break
Hi guys!! Love having you over, best farm helpers ever😃
Nydelig plass du har der du bor, våren kommer til deg nå.🌄
Have you ever used wheat straw for bedding, i bale dry straw and sell to my local dairy farmers in Manitoba Canada and they tried saw dust but not always dry and expensive
We used to run one field of wheat just to get our straw for bedding. It was the only thing we combined.
Our vet says if a calf bloats twice you should get rid of it. Please send some rain to Minnesota.
Hello . You have a very large farm. I wish to have a farm like this. get to do what you like.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
😀
и что потом с соком делаете? Сбраживаете получая брагу и потом гоните самогон? Или сбраживаете для получения кваса?
That little one doesn't need the sap boiled down ❤
Nope she’s happy with the raw stuff 😅
в России с берез сок собирают. Береза это дерево. А вы с чего собираете? Ваши деревья не похожи на березы
These are sugar maples
👍🏻😀
I bet that's fun making the maple syrup with your family. I grew up on pancake (high fructose corn syrup) syrup. 🤢 I believe that's a form of child abuse. Lol. Nothing but the real stuff for me.
