Hah. Jokes on you, I don’t even have a bookshelf. I put them all in my bedside table. I sort them by read and haven’t read yet. 1:41 well this is awkward because I asked people's ideas on reorganizing my shelves and there were too many options that I felt like would take forever (by genre[got multiple books that are multiple genres], color, size{too much variety in size}) so I just decided to organize them by book title because I've organized them by author's last name before and also I've organized by color before but I have a few books where the spine is a completely different color to the rest of the cover (ex: Demigod Diaries, spine is brown but the rest of the cover is green).
I just finished reorganizing my bookshelves an hour ago. And man! My whole evening just flew away, like whoosh! 😅 I prefer organising according to the genres and sometimes authors.
Frankly, I love organizing my bookshelf. It‘s like a holiday-treat activity I can indulge in after all my exams are over. Get myself a nice audiobook, sit down on the floor with all my lovelies and decide how they‘ll end up back on my shelf.
Man I FELT THIS! Working in a bookstore we have to reorganise the shelves all the time! it's even more stressful when you in the middle of re organising and people come into the store Also currently my home shelves are organise by colour in rainbow order It brightens up my room so much! It was well work agonisingly figuring out how dark to light books were ☀️🌈
I love reorganizing my bookshelves.. I usually do it by Author...I usually donate some, and add in the new books. I donate the 3 stars or lower rating books, and go from there. Organizing or reorganizing things is like my stress reliever. Happy Organizing.
Very accurate! Personally, I organize my bookshelves at home by genre, then clump all books in a series or by the same author together within the genre groups. The dozen or so books I take with me to college to put on my one small dorm shelf I organize by height to make it aesthetically pleasing. Both ways seem to work for me within their context and it's not often I have to reorganize them unless I suddenly haul a lot of books that need homes on my shelves.
I love when you make these kind of videos!! They always make me smile and laugh and i keep starting the video over and over and rewatch parts of it... because it is SO relatable!
I absolutely love reorganizing my bookshelves! It gives me a sense of calm and comfort Although it does take a while, the end result is so satisfying. I usually just reorganize however looks best to me, not by color author or anything like that but I NEVER split up a series!!!
I organize by genre, and in the genres, by author. Just makes the most sense to me, and I can always easily find my books. Good luck organizing your shelves!
*Tip that usually works unless you have an oversized book, push your books forward so they're flush with the shelf, then they don't stick out when they're different sizes I worked as a Page at the library so my job was pretty much just shelving and reorganizing. On rare occasions I got to check the books in and out (mostly in so I could shelve them). The worst is the children's section because it's always in disarray and there's so many different shaped books! It hurts when you have multiple books protruding from the shelf at different intervals because they just don't fit. There's still times when I'm at stores or libraries and start reorganizing or pushing the books flush to the shelves without realizing it. Other times a shelf is such a mess that I can't help but try to put it back together.
I try to organise by genre or a kind of theme (that most of the time only I understand it) and then by author. Or sometimes I have enough books by the same author to fill a shelf so that's their shelf. I recently had a clearout/reorganisation of my bookcase and it made me so proud.
My organization strategy right now is "oooh there's a free space, let's put the book there for now" because I relate to most of the thoughts you mention in the video and put off reorganizing the bookshelves...
this whole video was super relatable even though I love reorganizing my books. I organize mine by separating the hardcover and the paperback because one of my bookshelves can't fit hardcovers. For the paperback bookshelf its: manga on the top shelf, alphabetical order by author, by release date, then dictionaries and more manga on bottom shelf. For the hardcover shelf, started off as whatever looks nice and now it's just whatever fits.
As someone who’s job is literally to shelve and organize books in the library (my county has this thing called “student shelvers” where high school or college students get paid to shelve books, and that is all we do) it can actually be really peaceful. That moment where my section is perfectly organized and straightened is the best. Then all your hard work is destroyed in less than a minute. I promise, while it can get boring on a really slow day, there are enough books coming in to where we’re constantly working. The real challenge for most of us is resisting the urge to read the recently shelved books. That, and your own bookshelves have to be so very neat and edged it’s honestly ridiculous.
This is hilarious! And I also am in a reorganization mood because I’m doing a technical writing instructions project for one of my college projects. I organize by genre and then by author last name. I also have started a new thing where I have all of my unread books in one section so I can find them easily. I don’t organize these by last name though. Instead, I put all of the books in series that I’m not caught up on on one side, and I have all of the books I could currently read on the other. You can do this Jesse!!!!
And this, is precisely why I organize my books by author. And because I like to be able to find my books quickly. I've put A-E on one bookshelf, then F-M, but then the Ms overflowed onto my N-P shelf, and then lastly I have my R-Z shelf.
I organize my my enjoyment of the books Favorites are easy to access (usually in the middle at eye level) , least favorites on the bottom, meh books on top, and the books I haven’t read yet I like to put it in the first place you look so I never forget that I need to read them.
I usually organize my books like how the library does it, in alphabetical order by author last name. It makes it easier to find stuff, to put new books where they go, and best of all-all the series are together!
I love your videos! ♥ I organize my books from the tallest one to the shortest one and sometimes it drives me crazy, so I made a list and this is how I know I won't mess it up while adding new books.
I organize by making some classifications of my own. Like - all books of my favorte author comes first. Then comes other alltime favorite books and series. Then my new favorites. One shelf is dedicated to different language other than mine. Two shelves consists of all of my childhood/ adolescents favorites. One shelf has exclusive collection copies, and many more classifications. Each shelf is again organized by author and series. Each shelf can remind me of some specific period of my life. 😊
I’m a library leader which means that I have to re-stack bookshelves everyday all day and to answer your question it’s because we know longer sane we are crazy. But on the good side we have super strong arm muscles from carrying books everywhere.
I got a second shelf from a friend last week and I agonized for like 2 hours about how to split them up or if I should sort them by hardback vs paperback, series vs standalone, or by author. I finally settled on author last names because ocd is awful and I couldnt split them any other way. Now I have A-J on one shelf and K-Z on the other.
I organize my books by three major categories and about 30 subcategories. I have three parts on my shelves: everything new (every book I own written in the past 25 years, these books are mostly YA, Fantasy and modern poetry. These are organized by series and size.), then I have classics shelves with all my classics (these are organized by editions/publisher. All my penguin classics together, my penguin english librarys, my vintage classics etc), and lastly my non-english books (mostly german and french. Those are just puzzled together without any rules).
I organize my bookshelfes by genre, by place of setting, setting time and by the year of publishing. When I have all the books by an author I put all near on the same shelf. I also have many editions of my favorite books.
I might be the weird one but I love reorganizing my bookshelves. I do it when I'm stressing, when i'm bored, when I get a new book, or when it is 2 am and I can't sleep. It is calming to me. I organize mine but authors last night and if it paperback v hardback. I also have 2 dedicated shelves to PJO and Mysteries like Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys and Sherlock Holmes.
I don’t have a specific organization method, but I tend to group books according to when in my reading life I read them. Like favorites during certain time periods, YA hyped fantasy or sci-fi that I enjoyed, books that aren’t as well known but I like and usually got from library book fairs (usually historical fiction and fantasy), fairy tale retellings, etc. And sometimes if a new book comes it works its way in to wherever it just fits and feels natural. And then there’s a pile with no organization but there’s no room left on my shelves.
I recently decided to organize my bookshelf and it was a journey. I can never commit to an organization method but this time I decided to use the Dewey decimal system. I even labeled some older, poor condition books. When it comes to shelving, all of the books in a series (including spinoffs and sequel series) has to fit on the same shelf or else everything needs to move over. The same applies to book by the same author. I also have a goal to read a book by an author from every country and those books get shelves on the bottom row with a sticky note of the country it represents.
When ever I reorganized my book shelf I either do it by size of the books and series/authors, or by size of books and colour/ascetic. With every 4-5 spines stick a book facing out in order to fit more books in behind.
I do my standalone books by color (because pretty). Then I keep all of my series together and I like to spice the shelves up by decorating with my merch related to the series. My nonfiction are on a separate shelf sorted by topic.
I organize and this is all at the same time, by genre, author, series and my favorites. Plus I double up the rows (my bookshelves are not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, but all my books fit) and I organize all my books right to left.
I have quite a split collection of books since I read a lot of Hungarian books as well as English. So I always start by separating those two, and that helps. I usually only deal with one half at a time if I'm reorganizing.
I have a small collection at the moment so it’s easy for me. I just stack up books by Series order..For standalones I go for color co-ordinated.. -❤️🖤❤️
I'd love to reorganize your bookshelf! It looks like way more fun than reorganizing my own bookself - that only constitutes of trying to fit more books in the same amount of space because I only have one bookshelf and no place for more, but I keep buying more books. Cover facing outwards is an inattainable dream. Otherwise I organize my books vaguely by genre, I always keep books from one author grouped together and then arrange them in a somewhat aesthetic colour palette - as much as I can with no space.
Mine has two rows on each shelf, and I just put my favorites in front where I can look at them and feel happy 😂if I try to rearrange them I'll just end up sitting in my floor surrounded by broken hearts-I mean books, and reading one I've forgotten about but still love
I organized based on aesthetic. Like, I have to like how it looks, so it’s less about being organized, and more about making me happy. Like, I’ll have a shelf full of books, then the best shelf with be partially full with a giant vintage camera, the next shelf, all pictures and trinkets, the next, more books. And it goes on. Haha!
i only have three shelves and about 40 books so i kinda like reorganising my shelves, right now are the most “bright” books on the top shelve, the black books on the third shelve and the books that are not bright coloured and not dark are in the middle and there’s also a pile of books on the ground because my shelves are full...
I work in a library and luckily shelving is only a part of my day. But space is usually the biggest issue for the adult library. Mess is usually the biggest problem for the juniors. I organise my own books by genre (then author grouped however sort of fits) for fiction and by subject for non-fiction. I tend to store books I have already read in places like under my bed and in the attic so I have mostly unread books on my shelves to remind me to read them.
I have three shelving units. One unit is my series unit. The second holds classics, nonfiction, and some CDs. The third also has CDs and my records and music magazines, and for books it goes from children's literature to middle grade to YA to adult. It happens to split evenly with the rest of my YA books ending on one shelf, so the adult books start cleanly on the next shelf down. What I mean by adult though is pretty much just general fiction that isn't marketed in a specific age range. As for the organization of the books on the shelves, it really is just what I think looks the best. I like when the heights of books are the same so that's where I'll start. This is easy for books that are in a series or books that are published by the same company. I'll usually keep an author's books together when it comes to stand-alones. Obviously the books by the same author are going to be together if they're in a series. And then the rest of the process is just rearranging the books a bit if I don't like a certain area or don't think those books look good next to each other, which is mostly something that comes up when arranging stand-alones in YA and adult fiction. There's always that small handful of books that literally don't look good next to anything for whatever reason, but it's usually because of the color. Yeah, so that's how I organize my books.
Big Mood. Last time I reorganised, I had to do it twice because I hated the first set. AND THEN I thought that it would be a good idea to move the shelves themselves- took me an hour to move them, and two seconds to decide that I hated it so I moved them back...I just need another bookshelf in general, there is no space and no amount of rearranging is going to change that.
1 shelf is for series. The 2 small shelves on the wall are for new books to read. My rule. No more books till those have all been read. Works well for me. 2nd shelf. Top is reference books and art books. 2nd and 3rd ALL time favorites. 4th waiting for the next part of series before moved to the other book shelf 5th new books and old textbooks. That one wall of tempting space for a new bookshelf. A large painting to avoid said temptation. Orange basket on the floor I got at the dollar store: Books to donate bc 1. Not worth reread 2.hated it 3. Got bored 2/4- 3/4ths and not worth finishing. Green basket beside Orange: books I'm okay with donating and have reread or I'll buy digital copy. 2. For friends and family to have their pick of.
I actually kind of like reorganizing my bookshelves, the result is SO worth it every time. Recently I started organising by genre, and I got to say I really like it thus far.

Frankly, I love organizing my bookshelf. It‘s like a holiday-treat activity I can indulge in after all my exams are over. Get myself a nice audiobook, sit down on the floor with all my lovelies and decide how they‘ll end up back on my shelf.
My book collection is quite small right now but I absolutely love seeing big book cases!!! They give me joy.. I believe in u Jesse!!!
Man I FELT THIS!
Working in a bookstore we have to reorganise the shelves all the time!
it's even more stressful when you in the middle of re organising and people come into the store
Also currently my home shelves are organise by colour in rainbow order
It brightens up my room so much! It was well work agonisingly figuring out how dark to light books were ☀️🌈
Where can I buy the “IT IS WHAT IT IS” sweater?
2 videos in one day? Jesse you're spoiling us but I'm not complaining 🤷♀️❤
It gives me a sense of calm and comfort
Although it does take a while, the end result is so satisfying. I usually just reorganize however looks best to me, not by color author or anything like that but I NEVER split up a series!!!
I organize by genre, and in the genres, by author. Just makes the most sense to me, and I can always easily find my books. Good luck organizing your shelves!
*Tip that usually works unless you have an oversized book, push your books forward so they're flush with the shelf, then they don't stick out when they're different sizes
I worked as a Page at the library so my job was pretty much just shelving and reorganizing.
This is so relatable! I swear I’ve had everyone of these thoughts while organizing my bookshelves. Great video!
Only you could make me love watching a person rearrange their bookshelves! Hang in there Jesse
this whole video was super relatable even though I love reorganizing my books.
I organize my my enjoyment of the books
Favorites are easy to access (usually in the middle at eye level) , least favorites on the bottom, meh books on top, and the books I haven’t read yet I like to put it in the first place you look so I never forget that I need to read them.
I usually organize my books like how the library does it, in alphabetical order by author last name. It makes it easier to find stuff, to put new books where they go, and best of all-all the series are together!
I would honestly love to just stare at and browse Jesse's collection like I would at a bookstore, honestly. Such an impressive collection!!
I love your videos! ♥ I organize my books from the tallest one to the shortest one and sometimes it drives me crazy, so I made a list and this is how I know I won't mess it up while adding new books.
I LOVE THIS SO MUCH!!!!! these make me laugh and they never dissapoint 😂😚
I reorganized my books yesterday!! By color. So satisfying
I have my books by series. 2 shelves are manga, the others are random normal ones together in the sets
Man, I love these types of videos that Jesse puts out.
BRILLIANT!! I was laughing out loud and related to every thought and question. Happy me is having to start the same process this week! 😭😭
Plz never get rid of the Divergent series!!❤😂😬
Great video
4th waiting for the next part of series before moved to the other book shelf
5th new books and old textbooks.
Things I like about this video:
•its so dam relatable
•his bookshelf reorganization is inspiring me to do the same
•the part with Taylor Swift reference ❤️
•fictional friends
❤️❤️❤️💞
So feel this video. Just did it a week ago.
I tried to organize them by hardback and paperback, but couldn’t stand my series being all over the place!!
This is definitely my favourite TH-cam video you've made so far😂😂
As a page that works at a very small library branch, pulling and reorganizing books to fit more does something on your mental state. Every time I do it I go crazy and am dead inside
Yes! Right in the middle of organizating my books. And I DO it by title
Love your videos Jessie they always make me smile 😁. I actually arrange my books by series length (from most to least) and then have a specific shelf for Stand Alones
