@Captain MufDyven Carhartt has pretty much outsourced their clothing during the last 10 years or so. I worked at their large warehouse in Hanson, KY back in 2005-2006, and before I left they closed their last cutting facilities down in the USA. They also started their women’s clothing line and a line of boots, back about that time. I think someone else makes the boots and puts their name on them. I still wear some Carhartt jackets and bib overalls in the winter, but I work in a large auto plant so I don’t really abuse my winter wear, but man I wished they still were made in the US.
When I first saw your videos I was thinking how ridiculous, people will watch anything! This is a very sensible video. It doesn't cost that much more to make things properly but people are more focused on paying for a name whatever the quality, quite sad really.
I've worn Carhartt for at least thirty years. I recently tried to buy a new winter jacket for work , could not find the same model that had been my go to for years . Someone at Carhartt decided to drop it from the catalog. Everything they offer now is poorer in quality and higher in price , no thing to see but trendy clothes now . I should have known as soon as I saw the Carhartt display of dog coats and leashes . No more Carhartt for me.
Bingo They started dropping their lines and quality right around 2020 idk if they were bought out or Covid cut backs ? Not that it’s bad but they are into hip hop lines and women’s clothes now
Almost walked out of the store with these last weekend. Saw a pair of Redwing moc toes in my size on the way to the cashier. Looks like I dodged a bullet!
My first pair of Red Wing high tops I wore out of the store and didn't get to take them off for 14 hours. New shoes always hurt my feet until I get them broke in. Those Red Wings never hurt my feet. Not once.
Keep an eye on Red Wing's quality. Kanye just started to wear their boots on the regular. Like someone said in these comments, once workwear becomes trendy, the quality goes down.
You got lucky. I was forced to buy Redwing steel toe shoes because of a deal my employer has with the shoe brand. The toe cap came apart in less than a year and the tread looks like it's 5 years old. They're JUNK.
@@largol33t1 That sucks, sorry to hear. Mine are holding up, I'm wearing them right now for work. Very long break-in period but I've never had wet socks once. I imagine the souls would need to be replaced before the boots themselves, but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Not really. Their work wear is top notch. As a welder I need good strong pants, carhartt delivers better than any other brand. What I'm reading are a bunch of salty comments from people mad that carhartt is popular. It won't last. Carhartt was fashionable street wear for a couple of years in the 90s too.
"There's only one thing I hate more than lying. Skim Milk - Which is water that's lying about being milk" - Ron Swanson. This work boot seems a lot like Skim Milk.
You are correct. I grew up on a dairy farm in PA. Nothing like milk straight out of the bulk tank. Yes, not pasteurized. It's hard to even choke down store bought whole milk 20 years later. Might be as amish farm just down the road that can help a guy out.
Carhartt to me has become synonymous with those fake farm boys I see here a lot in my hometown. You know the type.. they wear carhartt everything with CAT or John Deere hats and that drive brand new trucks that their office worker mom or dad bought them. It’s all just about appearances, they have not worked on the farm a day in their life but they want to look like they have.
So I used to work at Carhartt and one major thing to note is that they don't actually make the boots that they sell. They are made by a third party (Black Diamond) so I agree it's a shame that they sell them. I still stand by Carhartt's clothes but most of the accessories are pawned out to a cheap third party maker.
That makes a lot more sense. Thank you for the explanation because I bought some Carhartt pants a couple of months ago and they're pretty good quality for the rest of their clothes and my stepdad has bought Carhartt clothes for years and they've still kept in good shape except their boots he never gotten their boots he always gotten hi-tec. It struck me a little bit odd that a otherwise pretty good brand would have really bad quality boots but a worse third party companies making the boots explains it well
@Right Round This is true about factories in general. But in terms of being made by a 3rd party I believe what Austin is referring to is that a separate US company is in charge of the overall design, development, etc. And carhart then just slaps their label on it. Most US companies develop their own product and work with the factories overseas to have it built to their specifications.
That's no excuse. At some point in a companies' supply chain, everything comes from 3rd parties as almost no company nowdays has full vertical integration. Companies that care about quality will make sure all their suppliers are delivering up to their standards, even when they are sourcing in China from ODMs. I seriously doubt that Carhartt owns most (any?) of their production facilities given the volume they sell. And, in my experience, most brands have ODMs pitch them products all the time, it's up to the brand to demand goods that live up their brand promise. Clearly Carhartt has chosen profit margin over brand value - this is conscious decision, not a fluke. Just because it is made in China (or anywhere else in the 3rd world) doesn't mean it has to be crap - it is up to the buyer to specify and pay for the quality they want - if you buy cheap, you will get cheap crap. Factories in the US are plenty capable of making cheap crap if that's what buyers want....
Thank you Austin I knew the boots were 3rd party, but having brand confirmed is nice. As for clothing I guess my question wouldn't be if it is good. I guess it'd be if it is as good as it used to be, and how far back your knowledge goes. I feel like they sell something not as good as it used to be @ a higher price. (still good, but not as good)
I used to be a Carhartt dealer. I can verify the boots are made by Black Diamond for the past 6-7 years. Red Wing made the Carhartt boots before Black Diamond.
I tried carhartt boots and you are 100 % correct! They should stick to clothes... Although even their clothes quality has gone down the shitter as well 🤔
They became known by the "fashion" industry and their quality / value's gone to shit. I bought a hoodie a few months ago and it's already falling apart whereas my last hoodie is still around 2-3 years later. Same goes for their jackets. It's a shame really. Used to love the brand, but now I'm very cautious about a lot of their products I purchase
Crazy. I’ve a pair of Carhartt cargos that I bought 13 years ago and they are still looking great. Absolutely the most durable thing I’ve ever had in my wardrobe. Shameful to see how crappy and cheap they become.

This is a good topic that I don’t think is discussed enough. A lot of companies do this with their boots. Jack the price up, promise things that boot doesn’t deliver, and ultimately the product falls apart within a few months.
@Captain MufDyven I do know that they made both types w/ the zipper either to the knee or hips.
@Captain MufDyven yeah those were definitely made better. Sometimes companies make stuff cheaper but you end up paying the same price.

This is a very sensible video. It doesn't cost that much more to make things properly but people are more focused on paying for a name whatever the quality, quite sad really.
What’s ridiculous about wanting to see how something works/what’s in it?
I've worn Carhartt for at least thirty years. I recently tried to buy a new winter jacket for work , could not find the same model that had been my go to for years . Someone at Carhartt decided to drop it from the catalog. Everything they offer now is poorer in quality and higher in price , no thing to see but trendy clothes now . I should have known as soon as I saw the Carhartt display of dog coats and leashes . No more Carhartt for me.
Not to mention the vaccine mandates for their employees now like what....don't they know us that wear their clothes are hard American workers

You are correct. I grew up on a dairy farm in PA. Nothing like milk straight out of the bulk tank. Yes, not pasteurized. It's hard to even choke down store bought whole milk 20 years later. Might be as amish farm just down the road that can help a guy out.
Skim Milk is just sugar water
They'd probably be good enoguh quality to be worn as a nice casual boot, but even then, they really dont look good as a casual boot

I think it's great you did this video so people can actually see the inside of the boot and know not to buy such a poorly made yet expensive boot 👍
I grew up in a farming community in Scotland and the one thing you cannot hope to replicate is the sweet smell of cow dung that most farmers have.
I love Carhartt hoodies. They come in tall size and they feel well made.

Thank you Austin
I knew the boots were 3rd party, but having brand confirmed is nice.

This is a good topic that I don’t think is discussed enough. A lot of companies do this with their boots. I've been wearing these exact boots every day to work for 3-4 months now. I can't speak to the long-term durability of them, but in regards to every other aspect, I love them so far. I tried on all the other brands in-store, and these were the most comfortable for me. Price was not an issue. I simply tried them all on, and went with the ones that I personally liked the most. I have not yet watched any online reviews, so I went in with an unbiased perspective. I have not yet had any issues with the boots, other than them being a little uncomfortable for the first couple of full days on the job, until they were broken in, but that's to be expected with any work boot. Thanks for your review. Good channel.
Honestly mine haven’t given me any trouble I’ve had them for about 3-4 months now too. I know I’m gonna have to replace them within the next year tho.
You guys have to be warehouse workers or factory workers then, these boots in any other environment would fall apart in a month lmaoo

@@quickshot4050 yeah the carhartts were shit I thought this was a red wing video, I got some red wings & I put tuff toe they’ve been doing alright so far. Illinois weather beats your boots up pretty bad
Thank you for the info , my son wears redwings and has constantly told the are way way superior to the carhartt copy type. Just one thing young man , when you’re using that very sharp knife you have stop cutting thing towards yourself , one slip and the knife is in you .
Wow. I never actually researched to know what "full grain leather" meant. Thanks for this!
(Just came from Trenton & Heath--can see why they recommend your channel!)
i guess the old sponsor was carhartt lol! I would have bailed as well :) Good job!!!!
So I guess we need to start classifying work boots. Classifications such at entry level, novice, intermediate, semi pro, and pro. This way you know what kind of wear/performance to expect from the boot.
Back when wolverine boots got popular on the work scene, around '95-'97ish, I had been wearing redwings and liked them a lot but the new Wolverines were supposedly the cats meow of work boots. So I went and bought a pair. I bet those boots didn't go 4 months before they were complete falling apart junk. I was pissed cause I paid a 185 bucks for them, which was a lot of money back then. Never bought or wore a pair of those again.
I bought Timberland Pros and didn't use them for 7 or 8 years.
Second wearing was on a snowy day. The cushioning between the sole and welt got wet and deteriorated. Timberland told me to send them to Kentucky at my expense ($16) where they would determine if warranty conditions were met. I wasn't going to spend shipping and find out they didn't meet replacement standards. Timberland will never get another dollar out of me.
I thought it was my fault I was buying a new pair of boots every 4 months
Thank you for reviewing this and saving some people some suffering
Always sad to see a company with a good rep slide so far downhill in quality.
☝️🧐 just wait. After I purchase the company I will turn quality control around and we will deliver an excellent product. But first I will need investors. Are you in or out?
@@hanestshirtsarecool depends entirely on what we are investing. Money, time, happiness, off color dead baby jokes, dead babies, Cadillac, hopes, dreams, nightmares. Because I only have one of those in plenty in my garage.
I had a pair of these in black with a sorta reddish sole. Bought em on sale, and absolutely beat the hell out of em at a carpentry gig. This analysis is pretty spot on. They're more like tough-ish sneakers than work boots. They are very comfortable, but they do NOT breathe. My feet were rotting in the summer. All the things predicted to wear out in this video, did indeed wear out.
Ya my feet sweated in them bad too. Another reason I didn't like them
Ever since Carhartt started making goods outside of the states the quality plummeted. It's all fashion shit now.
But the prices are still astronomical. OK maybe that's slightly exaggerated but I seriously have a hard time paying over $40 for any single item of clothing I don't care how durable it looks on the outside.
Thank you for this review I was on the fence between Thorogood American Heritage Moc Toe 6" and I can say now I'm going with Thorogood ......thanks again!
I've had a pair of these boots for 3 years now and I love them lol just as casual wear tho not a work boot... and I got them for $70
70 dollars is what they are worth !
Not 150!
Probably bought them at the Salvation Army
Carhartt-100% American made, 50% of the time 😂🤣🤮
To be honest the American made Carhartt jacket I bought is shit compared to the Chinese made knock I've worn for 10 years. Since I was in the leather jacket business for years, I know what to look for in fit and stitching detail and the Carhartt is very poor.
Dude I almost got these just off the strength of my other Carhartt stuff. So glad i didnt and spent a little more on better boots.
I’ll say this about them:
This is a CARHART fashion piece with some minimal durability. Comparable to a pair of under armor tennishoes, Eastwing or the likes.
I have worn these, and found them very comfortable. They were situated on display directly between a pair of Moctoe Redwings and Thoroughgoods. It was obvious off the bat they are NOT WORK BOOTS. anyone who thinks these are for easy EDW is nuts 😂
I wear their jeans for construction, first thing I do is take the label off. When they start paying me to advertise I'll leave it on.
Rural King has jeans ss good or better than carhartt for half the price.
Well done bro.
Lol your still buying them so carharrt wins

@@charliefabian7345 Oh bugger!
I've watched Carhartt's quality go way down over the decades. Its been Rocky boots for me. Only boot I could not kill within a year. The only one that my feet dont hurt at the E O D !

'Got it cut in half, let's see what's in side.' - An Ad. There is a TH-cam ad inside 😅
An ad? Why do people always comment about advertisements on TH-cam? Are you all idiots?! I haven't seen an ad on TH-cam ever. Not once, ever. It's not secret how to do this unless you're 4 years old or something. Also, why are you complaining here? It's not like Weston is putting the ads in his video. The amount of stupid you exude is astonishing. Seriously, you have to be one of the dumbest people on here.
I like the ad that played before the video telling us to buy the boot. Hilarious
@@User0000000000000004 No one did complain, you just randomly insulted people for something they are not interested in. Watching the ads is actually paying the content creator. So while everyone watching the ad is contributing to more videos in the future, you are not. So who is the dumb one?
What an idiot
My father in-law has a pair of Herman Survivor boots he bought new in 1973 and still wears them,I bought a pair two years ago come August 2022 and they are toast.
I've got carhartts that are 40 plus years old. Thanks to their CEO, I'll never drop a dime on their products again.
Idk why this came up on my feed but happy it did. I love quality leather products, so this is great information even if it’s not about the brands I buy.
Carhartt has gone the same way North Face went. Started off making a good product. Built a reputation, and then cheap out. But still charge a premium price! Don't waste your money on either one of them!
My work boots are nearly always from Army surplus stores, around £40 English pounds for German para boots or similar, they are comfortable, and really warm and sturdy 👌
I love your cat! What did you reupholster him with?
