Madonna's "Sex" book completely overshadowed the "Erotica" album that Billboard magazine said, in it's review was "bottomless with potential hit singles". Predictably, the media flogging her and saying she was desperate for attention, as opposed to making an artistic statement brainwashed the general public. Radio and even dance clubs quit playing her music. I lived in Dallas Texas at the time and I remember 2 clubs advertising, "Yes, we play Madonna". They would play videos of her "Girlie Show" World Tour performances and the dance floor would be over crowded. Great memories. So happy I lived through Madonna's artistic evolution. Love you discovering what a brilliant artist Madonna is.
Here in Canada, we were fully aware of the backlash in the US, but thought it hilarious and ridiculous. What is it with the US and sex? Mass shootings, violence and being a bully are celebrated, but a woman having sex on her terms is more than Texas can handle. Wow, you people are weak and sadly, for you, the world knows it!!!!
Amazingly she did score three #1 Club Play Hits off of Erotica with another two from Bedtime Stories. Such great memories from this time as you mentioned!

Yes, I remember Erotica actually getting good reviews at the time but the SEX book really overshadowed the album. People could not get over it and it became the main focus.
Seeing you get emotional after bad girl got to me! People don’t realize that a great vocalist isn’t just about having these insane rages and doing too much. It’s about having that magic in your voice, and making you feel something and I genuinely can’t think of anyone that can do that better than Madonna. And I love that you’re doing some more stripped down yet completely under appreciated performances. She really is such a versatile artist and fully embodies every character or song she puts on.
UGH! Keep going girl!!! your Madonna journey gives me life!!! Please do all the music videos and tours, you won't regret it ❤️😭😭😭 This is so wholesome because Erotica, the album, is everything.
This particular Saturday in January 1993, we had a Madonnathon here in Canada on MuchMusic. I had to run to the store and buy a fresh pack of 3 VHS tapes to record that PLUS this performance that night on SNL. So lucky to be a young gay boy during this part of her illustrious career.
It’s totally normal!!!!! Madonna is deliberate- everything has a meaning. You can never see her personal life come out onstage. She is a professional in every sense of the word.
Except for when she was having issues with her son during the 2016 Rebel Heart Tour and she kept crying on stage. Poor thing. Teenage boys can be so awful to their mothers. Trust me, I was a teenage boy once. Ha. I’m happy he’s come around and they’ve made up. She loves her children so much.
@ you’re right on that!….but i didn’t think that actually affected her performance. She’ll talk about things that bother her or important issues, but I’ve never seen her performance suffer because of something like that.
@@remingtongraveswas thinking almost the same thing, that period in her career. But she made the Tears of a Clown show to (literally) make it up and deal with that topic
one of the things i love about Madonna's voice is the level of emotion it has it really makes u feel the song and that's why she was able to sustain her success for so long without having to be a power vocalist like some of her contemporaries her voice is an ear worm especially in her ballads
Genialnie podsumowanie tego, co Madonna potrafi zrobić z człowiekiem swoim głosem. Nikt tak nie przekazuje emocji, uczuć, nikt tak nie potrafi wczuć się w każdą z ról. ❤
She received so much flack from a mainly chauvinistic society for being a woman and embracing every element of her femininity. She broke down doors, ceilings and buildings and rebuilt them to her own liking! Loving your journey! Again, “Ray of Light” on the Oprah show is a religious experience! Words can not begin to describe what happened there and there’s a point where she throws her hands up to the sky in amazement herself! Can’t wait to see you experience it! ☺️👍🏻
Loads of people said she looked sad, she probably was. She got alot of hatred and backlash at the time, she commented later one she never experienced so much hatred in her life before and during this time she couldnt open a newspaper without reading some very horrible things about herself. She was going a stadium tour, sell out obviously yet they called her over, it was like based on what?? So yeah she was serious and sad alot during the Erotica era, it was not until the tour you truly saw her shining and smiling and having a blast. She is a tough cookie or tries to be but she is vulnerable at the same time. That said obviously Bad Girl is serious in subject matter and not a song you sing while smiling.
This is the period where Madonna was experiencing the most severe backlash ever. Her Sex book and Erotica albums were released 3 months before this performance and she was just being dragged, and her singles weren't hitting #1 and the album wasn't a crazy seller like her previous albums. I think it was really taking its toll on her for the first time in her career, where during other prior controversies, she was able to brush it off and just do her thing. As a huuuuuge Madonna fan since day 1, I was always, always, always get scared when she performed live anywhere. She's no Whitney or Celine, so she's not a vocalist in the way that vocalists tend to be judged. I'm so incredibly happy that you are able to appreciate her live performances the way you do. Frankly, I think Madonna is GROSSLY UNDERRATED as a vocalist because she isn't a Whitney or Celine, but she can deliver a pop song whether upbeat or ballad, like no other singer, ever.
@@senorgato70 Thank you for the context! I honestly think being a huge fan of taylor swift all my life has made me appreciate vocalists like her and madonna - they don’t have the crazy ranges or do the runs, but they convey emotion so beautifully every time. Period. ♥️♥️♥️
One thing that I love about your reactions is the way you pay attenion to details. I really appreciate it and also the way you analyze everything. You really take your time and put on effort. I cannot wait for more Madonna!!!!
This is such a good song! She performed it for the first time of in a concert tour earlier this year and last year. We actually need made eye contact during this song!
@@BethThereseReacts I’ve been to every tour since tour since 2001 drown world. I am a classical musician. Got my degrees in music performance and everything. Like i play the flute i two orchestras…I’m stuffy……everything that you would expect from a music nerd. After seeing her live on stage in person, it changed my life. It sounds stupid, but it is true. I first saw her when my parents taped the blond ambition tour on vhs from its live TV broadcast in like 1990. Of course i wasn’t allowed to watch it…….and of course i did. What i saw as a kid mesmerized me…..i had already been taking piano lessons, but when i saw her…i knew i wanted to perform. Fast forward to 2001- i see her live for the first time….i was blown away. So young. I went to the next tour in 2004- reinvention, and i was 21 by that time. And it happened….what i saw and felt inspired me like nothing i had ever felt up until that point. It led to me doing drag…..and now almost 23 years later…i consider myself An artist. I can’t explain how seeing her live inspired a big part of my adult creative life. ANYWAY, for Celebration tour i bought only floor tickets to different shows…one of them was in the pit (thank you Madonna fan club presale!- icon) after i stopped crying from the opening of the show….and yes this happened every night….eventually there we were-eye to eye locked during Bad Girl. It was so special. She had never performed that on tour before. She winked…i died. For that hone moment in time she was singing to just me. I can’t explain. 🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦🪦💀💀🪦☠️☠️☠️☠️ just dead. You’re right on her voice…she’s not a powerhouse like some…..but she is literally the best performer of our time. You have to watch more live. She pays homage to so any artists….including herself throughout her tours. She LIVES on stage. Just watching her music videos is only part of her overall package. I am so happy to follow your journey !
Have you done Express Yourself when she opened MTV in 89 or 90? It’s stunning. Also- Truth or Dare. Truth or Dare is one of the most beautiful portrayals of a PopStar in her prime. The doc is B&W and all the performances are shot in full gorgeous color. I’m telling you your life will never be the same.
This shows why Madonna has had such a long career and held people’s interest for so long. Every project and performance it was always a different version of her, always surprising, but always purely Madonna.
Beth, you have got an artistic heart and soul, thats why you are able to cry during her performances. I got the same and there is nothing wrong with it, it is actually a gift to make these emotional connections to music. Lucky for you, you have so much more to discover, i felt like crying when she opened her tour last year with Nothing Really Matters and i finally saw her live again after 11 years and then during Bad Girl and Rain, while singing my heart out as well.
Its not only her vocal performance, Its her body and FACE performance… shes giving face all the time, raising her head up towards the light, and showin us those features, makeup, eyebrows, neck… black and blonde… perfect
I think one of the best examples of her reinventing a song for a live performance is the version of Erotica she did on the Confessions Tour. It sounds so fresh, as if it could have been on that album. That whole tour is iconic.
Bad girl is a gorgeous song and this live performance is subtle and totally vulnerable. She can go from big choreographic performances to raw intimate ones and she excels at both because she is a master at conveying emotion through her voice, her movements and her gestures. She might not have the biggest vocal range or be the best dancer ever, but the way she commands attention when she's on stage is second to none, she was born to perform.
Yes, lots of emotional Madonna performances… “Rain” from Celebration Tour came during one of the toughest periods in my life and you know what I felt? A hug. A hug from Madonna. I kept playing it over and over and over and over. It felt so comforting and like a hug during some of the darker, maybe darkest times…. - can’t wait to see you react to Hung Up from EMAs… the energy is everything
I was in my glory to have finally witnessed her sing Rain this year! That was incredible. I'm so glad she chose that over take a bow or frozen for the filmed thing in Rio.
I love that you’re waiting to do a whole tour! Keep dabbling with live performances! Hold out for an entire tour performance and get yiur tissues ready!
But please begin with the Confessions Tour! It’s a great baseline intro, forward and backwards for all of her tours. And that it was 2006 was the middle of everything to now!
Ooo, do watch the Erotica era music videos. They’re masterpieces. The same is true of the Like a Prayer, Ray of Light, Bedtime Stories, Madame X, Music, American Life, and True Blue eras. She was on such a creative roll those eras. God, and you still haven’t even seen The Girlie Show tour performance of “Fever,” which is smoking hot. Your eyes are gonna be popping out of their sockets the entire time. Ha. It’s so sweet that the “Bad Girl” performance made you teary-eyed. Madonna is an incredible live performer. Whether she’s sitting at a mic or dancing alone or with an entire troupe of dancers, she just takes full command of the stage. It’s rare that I’ll find a performer as moving as she is.
WOW I didn't expect to see your reaction to these particular performances. They both are so rare yet so popular among Madonna fans. It was the only time Madonna performed Bad Girl live (until the Celebration Tour). Bad Girl is one of my all-time favorite songs! I recommend you to watch the whole Blonde Ambition Tour (1990). That will be such a fun ride. Now you know almost everything from her 80's staff. I say "almost" because you didn't listen to her Who's That Girl (soundtrack album, 1987) and You Can Dance (remix album, 1987)
Let's talk about versatility now. Let's talk about real emotional talent now. Let's talk about power now. Let's talk about the greatest performer the world has ever known now!
Thank you, Beth, for your genuine and emotional reactions while discovering Madonna's magic. She didn’t come into this world to please or be liked by everyone. I’ve never cared about that; her creativity and artistic bravery have earned her detractors and critics, but above all, they’ve catapulted her to become the most successful female artist in music history. And that level of success can’t be achieved without talent. It takes special people to truly appreciate her in all her dimensions.
This is very much llke a jazz club performance, with the band, a mic and singer. Thats what she was going for. God im excited for you to watch full tour
Madonna has this gift . She impacts you , touches your soul, heals the child in you. I cry to madonnas live performances, especially ballads. I’m glad to see that other music lovers do so too 😊. About the sex book of hers I’d say erotic pictures . There’s nothing pornographic about it, it’s actually very caring and romantic overall. Keep up your reactions, I’m excited for the journey you are on. ❤
Oh definitely, the nude shots are very empowering, she looks strong and confident. Today it is seen as a feminist statement and art, she was just 30 years ahead of her time.
Beth, you hit the nail right on the head with her vocals! Love your review and glad that you’re getting into Madonna. There will never be an artist like her who paved the way for what and who artists are today. Keep up the good work!!
This one of her best ballads hands down. Madonna is a master at delivering heartfelt lyrics. I’m having the same reaction as you Beth, all the feels. You don’t have to always hit high notes to be considered a good singer.
It would be so much fun to see all the versions of "Like a Virgin" throughout her tours... Blond Ambition, Girlie Show, MDNA Tour, all so different... it would be a good "Madonna live" experience.
Great review Beth ! Madonna bug is contagious lol But also (u noticed she was stiffer then usual )..l In my humble honest crazy Madonna fan opinion. Lol - Madonna doesn't love live TV so she was moving less so she sounds perfect as possible. Still absolutely amazing performances tho . She just showcases her voice which was fabulous I love when she nails TV . The girlie show tour 1993 version of fever is awesome it makes up for the dancing. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Looking forward to what's to come! ❤ Scruffy Ps I cry all the time to the most random Madonna songs it's normal lol
I loooooooooooooooooove how you got Madonna, Beth!!!!!!! I've just seen the part when you listen to this performance of Bad Girl, which I agree with whom recommended to you: is flawless. Her performance, but pleeeeeeeeeeease that bass and that piano hit so hard, it makes me shiver everytime I see it. In this live performance it stands over all with her voice. And that black scenario... god
Back then SNL performances were pretty stripped down like this, and the stage was very small so not much room to dance. These two versions are pretty faithful to the album versions. It's usually on later tours that she switches things up. Also, I see a lot of people mentioning the tour performance of "Fever," but my favorite is actually the Arsenio Hall performance, which she did in the original jazz arrangement.
Just wow. That Bad Girl performance is so beautiful. And I thought I had seen everything she’s done, and this was completely new to me. Thanks for presenting this to us and appreciating her career and body of work.
Madonna is a great singer, actually. Just because she cant get those high notes as MC or Whitney or Xtina, doesn't mean she can't sing. And she has proven em wrong now and then.
6:27 thats pretty much the general vibe u get throughout that 1992-1993 period she looked sad and there was always a sting of melancholy in the mvs and live performances like this one and i think that reflects how she probably felt during that time about the backlash she was having during that era (an old letter leaked at some point that show her clearly vulnerable and frustrated with it on the contrary to how unfazed she's usually perceived to be) Also Erotica is pretty much a sad melancholic album for the most part even the sexual songs feel very moody. However, in the girlie show tour (late 1993) she seemed a lot happier throughout the concert it's a great show! ❤
Yeah, and the sad thing is, the same thing happened again with American Life. I’ve always wonder why she and her record company chose to put both narratives in these respective narratives when they hardly represent the albums. Erotica wasn’t nearly as much about sex as the promotion alluded the same way American Life was hardly about criticising the USA.
@@p.m.6064 AL should've been titled Hollywood with Hollywood being the lead single. Would've been done much better than to start it off with the not radio friendly title track during a time when over half of america was war hungry and drunk on revenge but that could've been the second or third single if she still wanted to make a statement but yeah AL isn't really entirely political at all it's very personal and self reflective and one of her best albums
I get so excited when I see your Madonna reactions!! It's so refreshing to see someone really love these the first time all over. She's so transformative and amazing.
You have to deep dive in everything about Madonna! When i saw your reaction i saw myself back in 1986. The first time Madonna really hit me. Hard! I heard about her but then i saw a “special” on tv with most of her video’s and interviews. Lucky Star to Live To Tell. I was mesmerised and fell in love at that moment ❤ I could not believe how 1 human could have so many looks in just 3 years. She is smart, funny, sexy, cute, vulnerable, strong and a always true and respectful to herself and everybody else! Can you imagine if you begin at the start of her fandom till now?? First the video’s then some performances, interviews, movies (maybe?) and then the concerts. All chronicologic!! That’s the most beautiful way to watch her grow! Dreams come true 🎈
These performances are amazing. Madonna's vocals are on point! You should see her performance of Fever on the Girlie Tour, she delivered THE Madonna right there!
Love watching you reacting to Madonna. You get her and I see that you learn more about her which is awesome. What people get generation need to discover her that she was a force the queen. You’re so cute.
I agree with your comments about her vocals. She recognizes her melodies are strong enough that she doesn't need a bunch of vocal embellishments, which makes the moments when she does do vocal embellishments real highlights in her performances (like the Oprah performance people are talking about or how she switches up Paradise (Not For Me) on the Confessions Tour or even her new melody for Dress You Up that she debuted on the Virgin Tour and returned to on the Rebel Heart Tour). I would recommend watching Don't Cry For Me Argentina from the Sticky & Sweet Tour, it gets left out of her list of great vocal performances but I think it shows how she aged into the maturity in her voice.
Beth, I love this! Madonna only performed Bad Girl live this ONE time, until her last tour in 2023!! I get why you're emotional lol. Maybe start with her live performances instead of her videos? Both are amazing, but Madonna puts everything into her tours. It's super interesting watching you react to her in hindsight, since in real time we were hit with the song, video and tour. They're all intertwined.
@ The video is not her most famous, but probably one of her top 5 best. It was directed by David Fincher who went on to do Fight Club, Social Network and Gone Girl, among many others. He directed some of Madonna’s best videos: Express Yourself, Oh Father, Vogue, and, finally Bad Girl.
Having the best time with your reactions!! I so get you! I will be honest I cried a little bit with a few songs from Evita also more recently with Wicked .
I really enjoy the Fever performances from the Girlie Show and Arsenio Hall. The energy in the first one is incredible, while the latter offers a great classic rendition.
Anxious for the tours reaction. You're in process ti become a fan, that's why you're crying during the reactions. It's a way you can't go back when it comes to Madonna world. Love this reaction! About the lipsinc, it's not something very common on her performances, the most of them she's singing in live, just with a base helping her, as a lot of singers do.
Yay! Saturday and starting with this reaction is making my day! Maybe you can react to her music videos by album chronologically that way you will see her evolve visually throughout her carreer now that you already know every single album has something to remember lol and tell us what you think and then you can start with the tours if you are still interested in doing that by then. I'm sure you won't regret it, just saying 😅. Have a lovely weekend Beth!
God bless the person who emailed you with Madonna's performances of Fever at the 1993 Arsenio Hall Show and The Power of Goodbye at the 1998 VH1 Fashion Awards! Both of these performances have pure live performance and pure Madonna voice. So we will soon get a reaction to these performances! I think I only saw one reaction for this performance on The Arsenio Hall Show with Fever (apparently there are very few of them, for some unknown reason, although the performance is great). The live version of Fever is completely different... And I have never seen ANY REACTION to the performance with The Power of Goodbye at the VH1 Fashion Awards 1998. In principle, it seems to me that for some reason many reactors ignore performances with this song. Although both the song and this performance are great!
Love the Arsenio performances. Not a big fan of the Fashion Awards one though. She's pretty pitchy. I think there's a rehearsal that's much better. I've seen a few reactions, but yeah it's not a common one.
I remember watching this live...she was also in the intro skit where she recreated Marilyn Monroe's happy birthday performance to JFK, but Madonna did happy inauguration to Bill Clinton
I saw her live in Copacabana beach this year, and bad girl just hit different let me tell you, just her and her daughter on stage, I'll remember forever ❤
If you start to get into the tours... I have to recommend Erotica from the Confessions tour... talk about a 'reinvention' it's sublime musically and with her performance
Thanks for this lovely time trip ❤ I’ve been a Madonna fan my whole life, since I saw that Lucky Star video when I was 13 years old! I was a DJ in my high school years and was dubbed “Murdonna”. I still have most of my Madonna vinyls. That was 1987-1989, when she was unstoppable. Back then, we would always have a blank VCR tape handy to record all her televised performances. Kids these days don’t know how well they have it with the internet and digital viewing platforms with the high quality video. As you transfer these videos to a compilation tape, the quality gets worse than the original recording. These performances were rare and special. I love re-watching these with you! 🪩🕺
Hi Beth......luv your reaction videos to Madonna's catalogue of music and now videos. I am a huge Madonna fan....she is literally the soundtrack of my life. I saw "Fever" and "Bad Girl" when it first aired on SNL (yes, I am old.....LOL). You are spot on as far as the controversy and flack she was given during the "Erotica" album years. It did take an effect on her a bit....however, she ended up making a great follow-up album "Bedtime Stories" to conquer the critics. I think many critics didn't know how to react to Madonna....because musicially and performance wise she is a genius. Many critics didn't think she could sing.....but then she will turn around and come off with a brilliant singing performance!! That is Madonna and that is why she is still relevant today. The "Bad Girl" music video you should check out......her videos are always cinematically beautiful....I highly recommend you check that video out. Since you like alot of her ballad work, I also suggest you take a look at two other music videos from the "Ray Of Light" album area......."Power of Goodbye" and "Drowned World\Substitute for Love". Like "Bad Girl", both of these videos are cinematically beautiful. Thanks again for sharing your Madonna reaction videos. And yes.....Madonna always surprises you with a different "version" of her songs.......you never know what your going to get from her.....which again is why she is so relevant to this day. Take Care. 🙂

She received so much flack from a mainly chauvinistic society for being a woman and embracing every element of her femininity. She broke down doors, ceilings and buildings and rebuilt them to her own liking!

Period. ♥️♥️♥️

Second this…. As a lifelong fan, it’s actually my favourite live performance of hers and seeing it live was immense

Back then SNL performances were pretty stripped down like this, and the stage was very small so not much room to dance. These two versions are pretty faithful to the album versions. Also, I see a lot of people mentioning the tour performance of "Fever," but my favorite is actually the Arsenio Hall performance, which she did in the original jazz arrangement.

Since you like alot of her ballad work, I also suggest you take a look at two other music videos from the "Ray Of Light" album area......."Power of Goodbye" and "Drowned World\Substitute for Love".
