Thing about Madonna songs is that no one sings a Madonna song better than Madonna… even if they are top vocalists
I’ve never thought about it this way, but it’s so true. It must have something to do with her essence. There is no one else like her. Shes not the best singer or dancer, and she admits that, but the sum is so much greater than the individual parts!
@@thevalkyrie8 love it. it’s bc she’s a true pure genuine ARTISTE 🧑🏻🎨
@@ianhaddock6057 Yeah, all you have to do is listen to some of the covers of her songs. They just don't compare.
So true !!!!!!!!
Yes
Madonna is definitely a performer. In this performance you can see: stage presence, vocals, dancing, theatricality, everything an artist can dream of...
Can you imagine her doing this in the 90s, a mega-Christian and conservative society, Oscar was always all set in stone. Oh, she went with Michael Jackson that night. It was the absolute peak of the 2, if there was internet everything would go down
When people say Madonna "can't sing" what they REALLY mean is "she can't sing like Whitney or Mariah (or Adele, as you mentioned)." But the woman has proven time and time again that she can sing. Is she the best singer? Of course not. But she isn't just a "singer." She's a visual artist, songwriter, producer, dancer, and performer. There are so many different kinds of artists who have different strengths. Nobody else can do what Madonna can do.
@@FindingMadonna I see :/ yeah we can’t expect every artist to be Whitney lol like that’s just unrealistic but that doesn’t make Madonna any less iconic!
Madonna is one of the best emotive singers out there. You feel what she’s singing. She doesn’t need to hit all kinds of riffs, and runs and whatnot.
I cannot wait for you to react to the “Vogue” performance from the 1990 MTV VMAs. It’s absolutely an act of genius and it forever changed the way female pop stars perform at the VMAs. You’re in for such a treat.
Oh, unfortunately, it’s not available in HD on Madonna’s official channel. Her label and management are truly doing her a disservice by not upgrading her entire videography on TH-cam. She needs and deserves to be viewed in HI DEF - ALWAYS.
Yes and Madonna's Ray Of Light live on the Oprah Winfrey show
And it's absolutely lipsynced.. so I doubt beth will like it so much
@@juanmanuelvektor As it should be. The “Vogue” performance is a tribute to ball culture where dancers had lip syncing competitions. Either way, Beth is gonna think it’s greatest live performance by a pop star, male or female - period.
@@juanmanuelvektor She sung this live you silly jealous hater
I am so happy you decided to do her soon or later live from the oscars.

And... Madonna's Ray Of Light live on the Oprah Winfrey
The dress Madonna is wearing in that show is the same one worn by Sabrina Carpenter at the MTV VMAs 2024, the same one worn by Fran Fine in an episode of ‘The Nanny’ and Madonna herself in the intro of the ‘Rebel Heart Tour’.
An ICONIC 1991 Bob Mackie.
An always Iconic Madonna.
I didn't know Fran wore it also. I just finished my run through of the Nanny lol.
And dripping in Harry Winston diamonds. It's absolutely iconic.

The thing about Madonna's vocal ability is that she was always compared to the other pop singers of her time (Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, etc.) who were very bombastic singers, show-offs with their skills. What I always appreciated about Madonna and her music is that she has strong hooks and melodies that she trusts, and she sticks to them, so by the time the song is over on the first listen, you could probably sing along by the end of the first or by the second listen. All of her biggest hits fall into that category, Material Girl, Music, Hung Up, you can sing those choruses by the end of your first listen. Her voice is pure and her songs are her strength, and I always appreciated that compared to some of the other better "singers".
@@Octopussy31st i seee. i agree and that’s how i feel about taylor swift. she may not be the best vocalist of all time but her songs always hit for me
Madonna is not boring like some of the other so called better singers. She has that star quality 😍
@@BethThereseReacts Exactly. People say Taylor can't sing but she's a songwriter first and foremost IMO. Same with Madonna. She's so much more than just a "singer."
Those incredible women weren't the competition of her time, with the exception of Whitney. Her "rivals" were MJ, Prince, Janet, and briefly Cyndi Lauper.
She's objectively not the most skilled or naturally gifted singer. Her lower register and vibrato are signature, and she works her ass off on stage and in the studio. There's no reason to minimize or cast aspersions on the Vocal Trinity of popular music in order to say that we love Madge.
@@AllGreyEverything Madonna was massive from 1984 - 2008. She was directly competing with Mariah and Celine in the 90s (and with Mariah into the 2000s - their 2005 and 2008 albums were in direct competition and Emancipation and Confessions were the two biggest female releases of 2005).
I love your reactions on Madonna. You are very respectful and correct. In an interview, I have heard Madonna say that she herself knows that she is not a great singer, but her goal is to reach people's hearts, and make them have fun at her shows. She is clearly a PERFORMER. And in that, she will always be UNIQUE and THE BEST.
@@SalinasPaulo Thank you much 🥹♥️
She never said she wasnt a great singer, which she is but she said she knows she is not the best singer or the best dancer and she didn't start singing because she thought she had the most spectacular voice but because she had something to say :))

@@noproblemnostress963 Love it
Agree, always loved a gap!! Heres the thing about Madonna...she never set out to be some grand singer, but to become a full performance artist. It was part of the deal to become the ultimate showgirl she is. I think she's done a pretty damn good job proving herself over and over the past 40+ years that she can perform like no other. Its not about having a wailing Christina Aguilera voice, but having one that can genuinely touch your soul, provoke thoughts, and maybe listen to a different style of music that you maybe wouldnt otherwise.
@@BenSellers8022 Yes!!!
When this album came out everyone said - good but I probably won't listen again - but it grew on people I think because this music was made for a movie set in the 1930s and has that little something extra because of it. And darling we all know you're going to be back in your shower recreating this performance 😊
@@butchbrewer4923 😂😭
Her date that night was Michael Jackson - two power house performers unite! People have this thing about comparing her to singers that can belt and hit high notes which really annoys me. I've never expected that from her but her voice has an amazing quality and performances like this show her multiple talents and yes totally agree about her unique tone.
OMG, it's happening! You're discovering her live performances❤
Two things that you need to know about her performances:
1- As you saw, she's a f**** performer and that's why her voice is compromised, because she dances a lot!
2- You briefly commented in the video about the version of the song, and this is very common in her performances. She always changes the versions presented and takes them to a new f**** level. Every tour is a totally different version and experience about a same song. She never uses the album version on a live show.
I'll just join the whole universe and recommend you to react The Confessions Tour, Sticky and Sweet Tour, MDNA Tour and Rebel Heart Tour. She put the performance in a totally different level on these shows.
I'll also recommend you to react some videoclips like American Life director's cut, Erotica, Like a Prayer and God Control, just to see how controversial and brave she was.

When she says “talk to me general Schwarzkopf, tell me all about it ooooh” she’s referring to the commanding officer of the United States armed forces who were at that time deployed in Iraq in the Gulf War. Also, halfway through the performance she nearly looses an earring which gets stuck in her hair and she throws away into the audience after she finishes singing before her grand exit!
This is in my top all time favorite Madonna live moments. If you want to see her absolute best live vocal performance, check out her performance of “Ray of Light” on the Oprah show. That is just… 😍🤯
The swagger and sensuousness of her performance captured the essence of the seductive Breathless Malone character she portrayed in the Dick Tracy film opposite Warren Beatty. Her versatility here belting a Broadway style song is amazing since most people have pigeonholed her as a dance hit singer. She achieved a wider, higher and fuller vocal range during the 1996 Evita musical film era when she had professional voice training for the Evita role. This range was in full display when she performed Ray Of Light live in the Oprah Winfrey show in 1998 that brought the house down. This is another of many of her must see spectacular performances for a proper coverage of her music and artistry. Enjoyed your reaction and hope you cover more of her live performances on video.❤😊
**Breathless Mahoney…not Malone.

Madonna was terrified to sing Sondheim so she worked her ass off to step up to the plate vocally and the results speak for themselves. And yes Sondheim’s music is insanely difficult to do well but one of his best qualities as a composer was that he always tried to bring out the best qualities in whoever he wrote for. Glynis John’s and Elaine Stitch were more actresses than singers and Sondheim wrote for them Send in the Clowns and The Ladies Who Lunch, songs that they sounded amazing on. He did that for Madonna here. This song shows off all the different colors of her voice and plays into her personality perfectly.

This live performance is probably the trifecta of Madonna’s live performances.
The first being from the 1989 MTV VMA’s; where she performs “Express Yourself”.
The second from the 1990 MTV VMA’s; just one year later, with “Vogue”.
And the third being here, just six months later, with a performance that not only stole the show that night, but even Billy Crystal; who MC’d the event, called her performance “the NC-17 portion” of the show.
theres also the VMA Iconic performance of Vogue, worth watching it

Did not expect to see this tonight! love it!!! People that say she can't sing don't what they are talking about. Elton John recently issued an apology for accusing her of lipsyncing when she wasn't. One thing I will say is when you get to her later tours, she did go to the studio to do a "live studio recording" that is overlaid over some of the footage from the tour, which is why some people thinks she lipsyncs, but it's mostly to do with her pulling footage from different performances and just trying to get a clean sounding vocal, compared to the older tours where the entire thing was taken from one performance.

Hi Beth!! Great reactions this week and loving the thought of you discovering the artistry of Madonna's music videos - many of which were groundbreaking at the time. Some personal favorites of mine: NOTHING REALLY MATTERS - BEDTIME STORY - HUMAN NATURE - EXPRESS YOURSELF - OPEN YOUR HEART - HUNG UP - just to "SHOUT OUT" a few LOL 😅 and hoping you're going to delve into Madonna's filmography - Dick Tracy is a great, campy comic book movie (I saw it in the theater as a kid and bought the I'm Breathless CD) and her performance numbers in the movie make the songs ZING even more!! And lastly - as always - who am I gonna suggest??? 🤔 MISS JACKSON - I'm serious when I say that Janet belongs in the same category of groundbreaking and trendsetting artists of that time with Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince, Whitney Houston, Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, etc... Janet has iconic music videos as well - her 80s bangers are amazing and each album has a different social message and vibe. She truly paved the way in her own lane alongside the greats - and she was always reinventing herself for each project, much like Madonna. I think if you started with Janet's album "The Velvet Rope" - it might surprise you in a good way! In any case, best wishes and thanks for sharing this experience with us - PS - I seem to like to leave super-rambling comments on Your videos - LOL! It's because I (and many of us) enjoy your authentic, honest opinions and organic reactions - it does take us back to when we first discovered these moments in our past - and your videos capture that MAGIC that is MUSIC!! Hi, Beth. Again, another great reaction. It was so refreshing to see the very good time u were having and, btw, I am glad that u already relistened to this album that was made by Madonna but not considered to be a Madonna album (if that makes sense to u and your followers). I usually get a little late to your videos and many people have commented a lot so, I don't want to repeat the same. What I am gonna say is a very VERY PERSONAL OPINION, and I may be wrong but I will say it anyways.
I always get the idea that Madonna starts singing this particular performance giving the back to the audience grabbing her a.. as a kind of "f u Hollywood" attitude, "you hate me as an actress but here I am at the Oscars and my performance will rock the house!" . Again, I may be wrong but that is the way I like to think about this performance. You can see she was nervous. She knew everybody was going to be watching her very closely looking for the smallest mistake. And yes, u r right, she doesnt hit stratospheric notes but neither do a lot of singers. She is an amazing performer, and , as u pointed out, her stage presence is amazing. Thanx again for this reaction❤

She was literally shaking (4:18) because she knew that everyone would see and judge her live, and truly the Oscars were at the time the only live global media show, which would now be livestreaming. She gains confidence at the end of the show and when the borrowed diamond earring gets stuck in her hair, she does not hesitate to throw it into the audience: she had triumphed, she was another diva from the golden era of Hollywood but without being broken by it. patriarchy, she showed that she could sing and that she knew how to move as well or better than crawling on the floor showing her panties in a teenage wedding dress.

Thank you for sharing this reaction. Madonna commands the stage all by herself with perfection, timing and elegance. I think she started the performance with her back to the audience because she had been criticized for lip syncing performances early in her career for TV shows. It was also a defiant way to begin because the room was filled with the Hollywood elite who were not accepting her as their peer as an actress. She had to show everyone that she was not just a flash in the pan pop star. I loved how she seduced the crowd with her performance and showed them how much of a triple threat she was. ❤

I think the Madonna can't sing narrative became a thing early on being compared to Cyndi Lauper - then Mariah Carey and Celine Dion.
