Thank you!
This is absolutely amazing. Never thought it was possible to play the piano parts for Revolution 9 but you've done this brilliantly.
Thanks Craig! I had a great time playing this, and it's certainly the "edgiest" video I've ever made. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Absolutely fantastic. I've always loved the piano bits on the track and you elaborated on them very well.
Thanks Clarence! I really had fun with this one, and it was a bit of a stretch for me to say Number 9, etc.
It was so great when you started chanting number 9. I was LMAO, just like I do when I hear the original track.
That's great to hear :)
I'm not gonna ask for sheet music, or even a full tutorial. But I MUST know how to play the first ten seconds of that. That melody has haunted me for decades. You would complete a major part of my life if I were able to play this. I'm a pianist myself and have tried to do it by ear several times over the years, but there's a lot of subtlety and nuance that goes into it that I can't replicate by ear.
Hi Jack - let me see what I can do. I'm teaching at a festival for the next week but I'll make a note to check it out.
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 just wanted to see if it's still a possibility for you to give me info on how to play that opening sequence.
@@MindFreakWonders That's a good idea. I'm out of town for a week right now, but I'll make a TH-cam video on how to play the opening soon.
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 Have you made one yet?
Hey so I had to figure out that intro part for this thing I'm studying in university. I figured he's playing Bm E Bm C#7 F#7 then back to the beginning. You kinda have to improv a bit since the original loop is so short but it's a waltz pattern (bass note then chord for left hand). Hope this helps
I checked wikipedia and found out Lennon sampled Sibelius, Schumann, Beethoven, and someone else whose name I can't recall just now, but I ordered the CDs from the library. I've always loved that little piano bit that plays under "financial imbalance...the watusi...the twist...eldorado...". I listened for it here, but didn't hear it yet.
Which composition is it then?
Amazing! People seem to dislike Revolution 9.. But I like it! This is beautiful! Keep on rockin' ✌😎
Thanks so much, I really appreciate your kind words! I like it too, and I think it's about just letting the sounds wash over us as we listen to it.
It's 3.5 beats of a cut time from the finale of Schumann's symphonic etudes; an 8th note before and entire measure then 3/8 of the next measure, all backwards. It's 3.5 seconds long too (Each 2/2 beat is about one second) and is my favourite sound from Revolution 9.
Thanks Paolo! That's why it's so elusive to figure out - it's backwards! This makes sense, since they used backwards tapes in so many of their songs.
Ive been playing rev9 for a couple years on piano. Actually im playing the entire white album on piano, as two 45min songs. What i do, is sing that "can up take me back", as a cabaret type some in Em. Then i play "the theme" (transposed into Em, coz my left hand is doing lots of drone rhythms.) I do "the chorus" (#9), then the lyrics. I open parts up to little songs "im sitting in my broken chair, my wings are broken and so is my hair". I replay a theme i developed in the helter skelter jam. And then i bring in that turkish theme.. As i play it, my left hand gets more intense. I play chromatically with the right. Towards the end, i try out some cecil taylor tone clusters. The sound of chaos, and talk about exposing yourself, snipping away clothes, show the truth, if you become naked. Hard stop, then into good night in G.
I love what you do too. Ive heard a classical version of this, on a mojo magazine with covers of each white album song.
Hi William! it sounds like you're doing some good stuff with this too! Where can we hear your version? Have you recorded it yet?
Yes I concur with KeyboardImprov, can we hear this version?
@@sobriquet5016 the whole album? Ive got individual sides on my phone. Today i worked on what im planning as a first set. (esher demos) sour milk sea, junk, child of nature, circles, india, not guilty, mary jane, etc.
Ill pull out my eight track, and make a good version off my digital piano. Ive worked too hard, not to make a good copy. Thanx.
Wonderful!!!:) when I first got the white album on cd I got scared because of this track and had nightmares for weeks after hearing it. But now I’ve come to appreciate it a lot more than I used to. I also have the white album on vinyl.
I can understand why you'd get nightmares. Turbulent time, socially, and that's reflected in the audio tracks Lennon chose for this.
it is scary! i got nightmares from it the first few times i heard it too. it still freaks me out, just not as much as it used to. but i really love this keyboard rendition. 😸
Why is Mark Ruffalo teaching me how to play Revolution 9?
Because he can! lol
Hey. Don’t make him angry. You won’t like him when he’s angry.
Brilliant! Brave! Captures the spirit of the track and the innovation of the White Album. Well done!
Thanks so much Mark! The idea for this gradually evolved over a few days, and I wasn't sure if I should "go for it." But once I decided to do it, the power of the concept swept me along. John Lennon was pretty amazing.
I listened to this in my car at 4AM
Very appropriate for this one!
Music starts at 4:59
The piano motif in the opening sequence of the track is so beautiful !!! That’s why I kept the first 24 seconds of « Revolution 9 » in my own alternative version of the White Album instead of removing the track altogether from it (far better than the whole Ringo’s « Don’t pass me by », which, on the other hand, I removed from my version of the album ☺️) Great work, my friend !!! 👍
Thanks Rory!
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 You’re welcome 😉
Bravo!!! Bravo!!! I purchased this album in the 70’s and the first time was quite literally mind blowing. I’d read somewhere that George Martin wanted to cut the album to a single from the double size and would have likely eliminated #9 altogether, leaving it as an oddity for some future “complete” sessions reissue in the 90’s. This album generated an enormous amount of discussion, between this song, Happiness, Helter Skelter, Piggies (thanks Manson, said sarcastically). But this song was the most talked about by us “intellectuals” (HA!).
Your improve was most beautiful. Made my day!
Thanks so much, Dan! Also thanks for sharing the intellectual climate regarding the album when it was released. I enjoyed making this video.
Nice video! By the way, I once read that the piano at the start at the track was a song composed by Paul but never used
Thanks Yaba! That may be possible about Paul composing that piano music. He's done a fair amount of classical music over the years and it's very melodic.
C l e a n, such a smooth interpolation
Love itt
Thanks!
This is amazing! This should become part of many pianists' repertoire!
Thanks Melanie! I had a lot of fun doing this.
My god... It's amazing. Congrats sir 🙌👏
Thanks very much!!!
Fantastic rendition!!
Thanks - I had fun doing this one!
I’ve always wanted to know the intro beginning piano sample. Anybody know?
I think they made it themselves?
my closest guess is that they used an interpretation of Chopins Nocturne op.9 No.1.
same here
Is a paul song demo
Beautiful.
Oh my goodness I need a tutorial.. Those first chords are sooo good
I agree those opening chords are great, Lucy. This was fun to make!
Ron Drotos Yes! Do you have some sort of tutorials? I’m dying to learn this
@@Bebe-rn2fh me too I want sheet music at least
Not gonna lie, I'd listen the hell out of a studio recording of this.
Thanks for mentioning Karlheinz Stockhausen, Ron. I didn't know much about him until you mentioned him here. I remembered John Cage's name popping up in writings about this track, but not Stockhausen. I'll have to listen to some of his work. Thanks for the improv, too. It was cool. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music #Music4URSpirit
Thanks, Shawn!
I've always felt that the brief snatch of whistling is Lennon whistling part of the theme of the BBC radio soap, The Archers - it's quite a cheesy reference point for British people, and would've been very popular at the time.
I just looked it up - I never knew this, but amazingly the theme tune to The Archers was produced by... George Martin.
www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00gj2tq
Ah! That's very possible, and I wouldn't have gotten the reference point. Someone should write a book about this piece! Thanks for contributing :)

Where Doris gets her oats??
The "Revolution 9" piano intro was composed and played by Yoko Ono. McCartney piano parts can be listen at the end of the song mix with short wave radio sound.
Thanks so much!
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 , It was always claimed that the piano intro was an unfinished piece by McCartney, but that was not the case. It is also not a reverse piano recording, as you can see, said piano part is played normally and does not exist in any previously recorded record. Yoko Ono from 1968 encouraged Lennon to make his music more articulate, especially because Yoko Ono had knowledge of classical piano and had been married to the famous Japanese composer,
Toshi Ichiyanagi. The "Revolution 9" recording is the exclusive work of Lennon/Ono/Harrison, no one else.
@@stellapolanco6860 I think that Yoko Ono is an under-appreciated musician.
Wow, its a proper modern music piece actually. Great rendition. The "Democracy!" part is absent tho.
Thanks Margus - I had fun playing this!
Masterpiece! I didn't even know this was possible!!! Amazing interpretation of this, it's like Chopin meets pure abstract art on the piano and really takes a creative spirit to pull it off. What chord would you call that at 7:40 LOL? Super disturbing!
I appreciate that, James! That chord is probably from Schoenberg, but it definitely came unexpectedly here. Give this a try :)
I could listen to it for hours.
Thank you so much!!!! Love this!
Thanks Steve - give it a try yourself!
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 I would definitely, if I were smart enough like you, to be able to figure out the score😝
Somebody have the real partition pls ! I love the intro
3:46❤️ 6:18❤️
this is beyond beautiful, do you have a sheet you can provide us?
Thanks so much! It was mostly improvised so I don't have sheet music :)
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 oh i see, thank you :)
*Hi!:) Why you didnt say "Number nine" at backwards? You scared straight?:)*
Great video! Would you attempt to record a version and replicate some of the edits and backward parts?
Thanks Tim! Good idea about the video but I think I'll leave that to another brave soul!
5:00 🎼🎹🎹🎵🎶🎧🤤
Anyone can link to the actual sample of this somewhere?? There seems to be debate what piece it comes from.
how about the backwards piano part?
Ha! Good one!
I wish i could know the rest of the song, and please could you put a pdf or something of the sheet music. Please
Glad you enjoyed this! I really don't have any sheet music for it. It was improvised.
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 oh ok. You should still make sheet music for Revolution 9
(I'd enjoy it)
I'm doing this on an organ btw
fantastic masterpiece! Who is the composer and what is this work called?
Revolution 9 - The Beatles
Please make a tutorial ^_^
go for it baby!
:)
There is a STRONG feeling between this and "South Side Of the Sky" from Yes (rick Wakeman). Agree?
Awesome
Thanks Tony!!!
Is there a sheet music for this?
Unfortunately, No. I just improvised, based on the little snippets of music int eh Beatles' recording.
The Whole of the White Album was written while in India
That is so fucking good 😂👍
INCREDIBLE!!!/INCRÍVEL!!! \MMMMMMMMM/
That's a great comment - thanks!
Please make a tutoriaaal
Give us the sheet music please!
Hi Gatorade! It would take forever to write it out as I played it :)
@@rondrotoskeyboardimprov9453 don't be lazy. Do it.
@@WesCoastPiano Sell it! (bootleg)
Chords pleasee
What time signature is the first piano part
It's in 3/4 time, as a waltz.
Where i can find this score
Hi Osmar. There is no score for this. I listened to the Beatles recording and improvised this using the bits of piano music from Revolution 9. Glad you like it!
KeyboardImprov Thank you
:)
Actually the beginning piano was written by Paul
Interesting - I hadn't heard that but it's very melodic like he might write.
Not written by McCartney. The "Revolution 9" piano intro was composed and played by Yoko Ono. McCartney piano parts can be listen at the end of the song.
Too many mistakes
