So because I'm an ignorant American, I didn't get the Churchill joke until a British friend explained it to me. I literally though the joke was that he liked only the most banal, trivial thing about Winston Churchill.
it's just as if not more funny as a Canadian because Gatineau used to be called Hull. That's the part of Ottawa that's in Quebec. So saying it's in Paris and it is in Hull ( a french speaking city) is hilarious to me. Yes, I know it's technically Gatineau but will always be Hull to me.

I've quite *LITERALLY* worked for this exact persona as their IT guy before. How do such useless people always find their way to positions of authority I wonder? ROFL
Power-hungry people (virtually everyone in authority) are always seeking and under pressure to move upwards, and they're always afraid they may be upended or bypassed by their peers and even subordinates. That is why they seek to fill those positions (when they can do so personally), and attempt to influence them to be fulfilled, by people of an inferior quality to themselves, that they could control and would pose no threat to their own position. Now, you can see where this leads when you get to, say, 6 levels deep in any hierarchy.

Interesting, but wrong. Lucy Montgomery played April, Dolly Wells played Paula in "The Dinner Party", who also played Miranda in "Jen the Fredo". Think that might have been your confusion :)
I just read that the writer/creator of this show - Graham Linehan - got a TON of flack from the Cancel Culture bunch over the fact that Douglas stopped dating April when he found out she used to be a man. And - sadly - Linehan apparently tried to fight back (which is NEVER a good idea - just smile and nod at them and move on) which has caused him a TON of problems. First - Douglas's character would make NO sense if he accepted April after he found out. He is not that deep. Second - There is a HUGE difference between someone saying: 'we don't like the way you wrote that episode. We are not going to watch it.' OR 'we don't like that episode. We are going to try and destroy ('cancel') you unless you apologize for writing it.' NOT a good time we live in right now. ☮
