- A deadly blizzard has paralysed Buffalo, New York, trapping motorists in their cars, knocking out electricity to thousands of homes and raising the death toll from a severe winter storm system that has frozen much of the US for days.

Buildings around the edges of Lake Eerie have been left looking like ice castles after days of heavy snow and high winds created conditions that local officials said were probably the most severe since 1977. The New York governor, Kathy Hochul, said a deadly blizzard pummelling Buffalo over the holiday would go down in history as one of the worst. 'We are in a war, this is a war with mother nature,' Hochul said.

I remember growing up like this off lake Huron. My parents house was about 50 ft from the lake surrounded by a steel wall and jetty. Winters like this was normal.

I seem to remember similar scenes from the same part of the world when I was a youngster, some 60+ yrs ago.
This seems no worse now than it was back then.

warmer poles = lower thermal gradients (polar > temperate > tropics) = weaker jet streams = more polar to temperate spill over. Same reason the insane hot weather for Northern hemisphere during summer

@The Human Canary it has happened plenty of times before, with much larger variance. The general trend is quite possibly in that direction too, yes.
The difference is the speed of change. Normally (not always), these trends allow adaptation in nature. When change is fast, then the effects are bad (pretty much all of the 7 great extinction epochs show this)

Not agreeing with the use of the word "war" here. It is devastating, yes. It takes a lot and people died, yes. But not a war. Calling every natural disaster or tragic event, a war, takes away the meaning and in my opinion belittle actual war. Especially with a real war going on at the moment.
