I always carry Winch on Receiver for rear recovery when off-roading alone. When there is nobody to pull me out and no recovery point at the front - this is the only option. Highly recommend to have a backup battery for all 4x4 off-road and overland adventure. Dual-battery setup would be the best option for such purpose. #overland

Not trying to criticize but you guys were going about 10mph. You have to GUN IT to get the momentum to get through places of mud. But if that mud patch was really long I guess it doesn't matter how fast you go.
25 years experience wrecker operator! A bit of advice never spin your tires during a recovery it never helps, just look at the mud building up behind the tires. Keep your tire speed as close to the vehicle's as possible and keep your front tires as straight as possible in most situations leaving it in neutral is best especially if someone inexperienced is steering.

You can take care of mosquitoes by using mask and spray.
I own a 12000 lb. Warn winch on a cradle which slides into my front or rear hitch receiver. To me this the ideal setup for recovery.

Quick follow-up question. I see that you use a spare battery. I am almost always off road alone. What are the benefits of having the spare battery as opposed to using a quick connect with jumper cable to the main battery and leaving the car running while using the winch? Thanks for your time.

Yeah. I use my winch on my Suburban on both ends with wire plugs so I don't have to carry the more weight of winch. I did solo Trans America Trail last year. I did get stuck in Ozark national forest and I got out mudhole myself.
Did you install permanent winch in front? Or some kind of hinch to hook-up winch?
Humman Off Road Adventures I have two hitch receivers so I can move winch to front or rear if I need to pull point. I keep winch inside from thief. It's wired to front battery by using the warn plugs under the bumpers.
That's exactly what I wanted to do. Currently I have one winch permanently installed in front and one on the tray that I can hook-up to hitch.
@@RebelBama Those Warn plugs are just Anderson SB175 connectors btw. You could also build jumper cable attachments and attachments for any other sort of 12V accessory to plug in. There are multiple molds for the SB175 connector housing, not sure which one Warn went with, the differences are to allow someone to 'key' their applcation by using a specific connector so to be incompatible with the wrong type.
I have my 9000kg Warn winch mounted on the rear chassis.Much handier when stuck and also very useful for pulling vehicles up onto a trailer.

When I am wheeling alone - I always carry two winches... risk management! :-).
Why not just use the winch in front to pull you in the direction you were going? (I know, you wanted to make a video of use for the back mounted winch...)
I wouldn't imagine there were portable winches even with two hooks that use 12V so you can apply them where you need.
It's time for the cars, to have one or more external 12V sockets for external electric tools
I connect to my battery with alligator clamps and those plastic quick connects. The cable is 2 gauge welding cable and I have two, one long so i can use the rear hitch and one short so i can use the front hitch. if I want to jump start another vehicle I can quick connect the two plastic female ends and then have a long set of jumper cables with alligator clamps at both ends.
You use alligator clips with that much amperage? You can draw hundreds of amps on a hard pull.

I like it, but all I can think of is what if that which wire broke , doesn't look like he's got any blanket over the wire , straight in the cab !!
You are right about blanket over wire ... I was worry more about mosquitos and bears at that time :-). Also, the winching point was high than winch - so, theoretically it would shoot at or below winch. But it is always good practice to put something over wire when winching.
This is great, just whay I wanted to see. Nice rig. I'm just not too happy with the extra weight I'll put on my truck being a daily drive.

Agreed on winch bumper. I had ARB bull bar - but it was so heavy that I decided to go with High Mount, which i have in front... you can see it in the beginning of this video. I carry second winch on tray to mount on hitch when I off-roading alone. Was really happy that I do in this trip :-)
Hey, Thank You for the review, very helpful though I'm not wasting money to purchase something that clumsy, to take up nearly all my cargo area, to pull out and install in the mud to use on that one very rare occasion where I might need to pull myself backward which I cannot reasonably anticipate but if I had a front hitch instead of my front bumper mounted winch maybe that would be okay..
What if you don't have winching point in front? How about having a hitch at the back as well as in the front, and be able to use your winch either in front or rear?
When I bought my 01 Explorer, the only way that I could mount a winch on it easily was to get the Warn multi-mount and a front hitch receiver. I have a Warn 9.5ti, and normally just keep it in the front receiver, with a locking pin so it's not easily stolen, but I can if needed move it to the back receiver. When my son rolled the Explorer I removed it, and now have it on my 2012 Ram 2500 (little small, but with a snatch block it works quite well) and I can use it on both front and rear receivers too.
That's a good setup. I'm working on installing hitch in front instead of High Mount for H3. It doesn't make sense to drive around with winch in front all the time - since it is my daily drive.
"Trac grabber" is good also
I looked at it - but it din't look like I could fit it on my H3 wheel.
I tried the trac grabbers and the velcro connection gets loose and slips around in mud (especially if side-hill) and can damage your breaks. With a stand-alone battery I'd consider using 1 snatch block and double cable back to truck thereby doubling your pulling force and cutting the current draw in half. (I can't tell if the tires were aired-down or not).

Great video, thanks for sharing! Would like to ask, if I need to winch the vehicle from front, where there is no hitch, what problems that I might run into, should I just tie the hitch winch to an equalizer strap attached to two recovery points?
I know some people who installed hitch in from to hook-up the winch - obviously, that would be a custom work. I would suggest to install winch some sort of winch mount in front - like I did and mount winch on it. The ideal setup for me would be - have hitch installed in front and back. Installing in front would require some custom work to raise it enough to ensure the approach angle is not impacted.

strongly suggest converting to synthetic rope. You're steel cable is crossing over itself and that'll create kinks and weakness...plus you get the added benefit of reducing about 25 lbs of weight

My understanding is that there are some limitations with synthetic... it is prone to snap when used on some rough surfaces and it requires maintenance - washing after mud, etc. But I like the fact that it is light.
As far as recommendations...it depends on the size of your wallet. I buy Dyneema from Ebay instead of from the big names like Warn. With Warn, of course, you get quality. As far as it being prone to snapping...I've never snapped it. I have increased the pulling power of most of my winches by increasing the motor h.p. and still I have not snapped one. If it snaps, it falls straight to the ground and it won't hurt it if it crosses itself while winching. If you do snap it, you can splice it back together. A way to protect it against rough surfaces would be to place something between it and the obstacle you believe will damage it. I have a Dyneema sleeve ( a larger diameter rope that is slid over the smaller winch line) that I slide back and forth. It is a design of Viking ropes which has its drawbacks but is usable. (FYI---I have at least 7 electric winches and a Warn drill winch. I have one that isn't converted but I have the rope for it)
Thank John for all the info. I will definitely look at these closer. The biggest benefit that I see for myself - is weight. I am trying to reduce weight of my rig as much as I can - since I'm carrying a lot of gears when going overland adventures. Reducing risk of injury and damage are very good reasons as well - especially when there is a chance that one can forget about all safety precautions.
I have wire and rope right now rope is no reliable stay with wire when you are solo you will regret it

As if . Maybe if you have the room to store that unit in the back of a ute but the average 4x4 wagon is loaded and no room to have that floating around in the back .
You can do a reverse pull by using you front winch .

Thanks for the video. I wondered why the door was kept open aside from Visibility. Can you close the door with the winch in place? I think with the spare in place on JL I will have a similar issue doesn’t fit.
I would have to remove spare tire to close the door completely. In this case - I didn't have to, but other times I did have to remove when didn't have enough clearance

I have deep-cycle battery that i carry for various purposes when I go off-roading alone. It is hard to estimate how many time you can use for winching without re-charging - but I never had problem running out even on hard trails where needed to use few times. I'm planning and recommend to setup dual-battery for recharging - that would be the best setup. Looking into this kit and want to setup before summer offroad season: amzn.to/2Ue8aam

Yes, you can with proper wiring. Better yet - install a secondary (auxiliary battery) battery which will be charging while you are driving and you will never need to move it.
you need too install a battery isolator too charge the spare batteries when engine is on

you need a continuous duty relay...this is old school way of doing it..the advantage is that if you kill your starting battery you can boost yourself..the fancy expensive ones that are on the market you need too yous booster cables too go from spare battery too starting battery if you need a boost..the relay i posted is just a example..i got my continuous duty relay from a car parts shop for 40 bucks.new.
it is dead simple too do..the hardest thing is too find a wire that has power only when the motor is on under your dash too trip the solenoid in the relay..i can make a video of my setup if you want me too i had my isolator working in 20 minutes charging my battery..you can too it really is no problem when you know...cheers

The widest points of my winch on tray measures at 27in X 18in X 12in tall.
I carry this setup (winch on tray + deep cycle battery) with me when I venturing in woods alone. I do have permanent winch in front - but I also like to have a back-up in case I need to winch myself backward (like in this case) or if my front winch fails.

you think this would work for a unibody? I added a hitch to my outback wilderness and don't want to destroy my front by adding a which under it. don't need all the extra weight when on the road.
It depends on the winch size and whether you go with steel or synthetic cable. You definitely don't such a big winch as I have, and I would suggest to go with synthetic rope. You are right, no need to mount in front - you can just throw it at the back when you need it.

After seeing you winch out with your hitch, that gives me hope. My hitch is only rated for 3500 lbs. OEM hitch. In Europe they get rated for 5000 lbs. My subi is 4000 lbs ish. So as long as I double it up, I should be fine?
@@benjaminjwilson6694 According to recommendation you need to have winch with a capacity that is 1.3-1.5 times the weight of your vehicle. So knowing this, you can start planning your install.
What kind of batteries and their rating
did you hook the winch power supply to a portable 12V battery? Is it possible for the winch's positive and negative wire cable to reach the engine bay area if your winch is hook up at the rear hitch?
Yes, I hooked up to my portable back-up battery. The winch cable is not long enough to reach out vehicle battery... you would need an additional cable

This doesn't make any since . How does this keep you going ? Don't you want to get through the mud hole so you can keep going ? I guess you could turn around and back up to the hole and have the winch help you back up through the hole and then just keep driving backwards till you can turn the suv around to keep going ? How did you go about going forward ? Why not put the winch on the front and pull your suv forward ?
If you look closely - I do have winch in front as well. When I am wheeling alone - I carry backup winch in case my front winch fails or for situation like in this video when I need to pull myself backward. It is hard to tell how deep or bad the mudhole is... this one seems to be small - but I got stuck in the beginning, and not even reaching middle of it. Since I was wheeling alone and wanted to finish trail before dark, I decided to pull myself backward and take bypass in this video: th-cam.com/video/zYx8ncjmzTw/w-d-xo.html

it would make more sense to me to plug the power into the power plug receiver of the truck instead of hauling a heavy duty battery just for this purpose.. i mean we are in 2017....
I always carry second battery for other reasons as well - running freezer and other tools/toys, as a back-up for primary, etc... Besides that - I prefer to use a secondary battery for winching if possible - especially if it is long recovery. BTW, what adapter do you use or would use to connect your winch cables to hitch power plug receiver?
Humman Off-Road Adventures Except they're charging a ridiculous amount of money for that. You could buy the Anderson SB350 connectors for around $20 each and make your own.
That one won't work - that is a quick disconnect that is attaching directly to battery. The guy suggested that there is one to connect the winch to your trailer power outlet that comes with towing package.
Also, I don't think the wiring for the towing power outlet will withstand the power that winch is drawing from battery

Well it sounds crazy but I use a good heavy anchor from one of my boats. A danforth will do but a cqr or a plow anchor is fine too. I’ve used all of these in fields where there are no trees but the spare tire idea is great too 👍🏽
Did a lot of beach fishing and with soft dunes, often got stuck, I used a mud anchor (the ones with two pointed spades), biggest advantage is that it flips over and pulls itself out, I have often just kept going over the top of the anchor, it pulls out as you drive away and you can keep driving dragging it behind you until you get back to hard pack sand to stop, then pack it all up. Also called Danforth style apparently
None of those mosquitoes have the proper nav lights or tail number markings...

Why drive a $40-$50K vehicle into a quagmire??????????? probably your "daily driver" too... have you tried an A T V ....so much more less expensive than trashing your vehicle.. and you can get a winch for it too..
I was and still thinking about getting some old beaten truck or ATV for crazy stuff... I'm trying not too do anything crazy that I can't control with my H3 though. I prefer to learn and practice with vehicle that I'm going for adventures. It's like... why people going to range and practice with real ammo instead of playing with bb guns? I want to know what it can do, and be able to recover or have a back-up plan.
ATV would be nice... but a good one would probably cost me around 7-10K. You can get H3 for 10K nowadays and with few mods you can go places :-)

You should just let the winch pull you out. Don't try and use truck while winch is running. Steer yes - but don't drive. You could damage the winch line. Thats whats written in Warn owner manuals anyway.

Wow... thats sad. Better keep your car on the pavement. I didnt think the h3 was that useless off rd. Thise nautalas spiral cell batteries are awesome. I ran one in my 1ton Bronco. I would run thick welding cable from the battery under the hood ... along the frame tucked up high back a good plug in for winches and ground the negitive side to the frame. Loose battery bouncin around might be real bad. Not to mention long pulls draw the battery down and that EXPENSIVE warn will melt down from low voltage making high amperage. Short pulls with charging time in between pulls is the way us experienced trail runners winch. And i guaranty we all learned the hard way. Thats for sure
Shortly after this video was taken, I'm betting the owner traded in the Hummer and the winch and bought a Jeep, thus living happily ever after.
Still own it since I bought it in 2010! No major issues and didn't have to replace half of my underbody parts and lift it before taking off-road -> like Jeep owners do 🤣🤣🤣
