Young man, you are a champ for working so hard to show your viewers what it actually takes to become unstuck and using no recovery tools. Terrific video. Thanks for your efforts!
Been stuck many times in remote central Florida soft sand... best points of this video. 1. when you feel you are getting stuck do not spin, just STOP and get out. 2. deflate tires 3. The advice on rocking back and forward (without spinning) to harden the ground! I have also found it valuable if you have access to water and debris wet the dig and fill it with debris (I have tones of pine cones where I am and they work great. But nothing like the peace of mind that comes with planning, letting somebody know where you will be and being ready with recovery gear, emergency supplies, charged tools and even provisions to last you a few nights... oh and never panic, if it get's dark, set camp and crack open a beer.
I just want to say thank you, I only watched this video about 4 weeks ago, just before I went on a road trip. About a week ago in cape range national park I got severely stuck on the beach, it then occurred to me that I had no recovery gear and the tide was rising fast. Remembered back to this video and it definitely saved my arse and my car, I am definitely ordering a big windscreen sticker to show my appreciation. You are an absolute legend. P.S I absolutely love your videos and have got my brother interested in them too.
Yup. They've probably never put any effort like you in educating someone. Only criticism. Hell, they'd probably dislike being helped get unstuck and given cash to buy recovery gear and a brain transplant! 🤣
Dude this happened to me a few years back. I was driving through sand in the California desert and came across an old shack I wanted to check out. Got out and looked around for 4-5 minutes and when I came back MY TRUCK HAD SUNK TO THE AXLES LOL. No biggie I’ll dig it out... nope. My son had pulled out my short shovel to play with a few days earlier. Had to dig the whole thing out using nothing but a tiny piece of brittle stucco from one of the walls. Took FOREVER LoL Great video. Made my laugh so hard when you said, “ now you can’t get upset because it’s your fault you’re in this situation”. Those were my thoughts exactly.
"You can’t get upset because it’s your fault"? I don't know, I find that swearing makes me feel better. After a minute or so of cursing, take a few deep breaths, have a drink of water, cool down and get on with it. It worked for me, especially as the two times I got seriously bogged were 100% my fault.
Great video. Straight to the point, and full of great practical info. Some of the so called 4WD tv shows could learn a thing or two from you about presentation Michael.
i dont know how much time you had to spend to get unstuck, but just to show us how its done, u have got urself stuck and spent a lot of time. kudos to u bro! i really appreciate you!!
LOL. I'm glad you showed this video. I know this is an old video, but it's nice to see someone post the reality of driving in soft sand. I've been wheeling in desert and sand dunes for over 40 yrs to include search and rescue recovery and I always tell people to air down to like 10 psi. An onboard or portable compressor and a shovel is really all you need. Good job!
Great practical advice. Ive seen many people bogged in sand with hard tyres and not fully digging the car out. You gave excellent advice regarding ensuring you make a big/proper effort to fully dig out so you don't get even more bogged.
One of the best things to do if u get bogged in sand is to fill a bucket with beach water and pour it around your tires. 2x4 ratchet strapped to the tires works too.
Titanium Quarrion that defeats the purpose of this video. Straps and a bucket might be more common in utes, whereas many mightn’t have max tracks, tire deflator or a shovel.
david c smith i was stuck in my 4x4 Nissan Titan on the estuary of San José del Cabo, it took me the whole day to dig me out, and like 12 people and 3 different 4x4 trucks to pull me over. Now I drive with recovery gear always.
Super helpful video and hats off for spending half your day covered in sand just to help the rest of us. Don't even bother with comments from the peanut gallery that can't work out what this vid is for or only watched bits of it. Was very lucky not to be bogged with no recovery gear recently, the old girl just kept going, but now I'll be more confident if the luck runs out and might even try my own test.
Unloading the vehicle helps a lot.You can also make the sand more compact by pouring water on it(bucket or a bottle filled from the sea).Great video, loved the fact that you actually dig the whole thing out by hands and log!
@@newport5504 Yeah there are few youtube videos showing just that sad scenario...the only bright side is the vehicles are creating new reefs for sea creatures to call home.
Wish I watched this before getting stuck in soft sand on a wide Murray river beach we had never planned to drive on. Hadn't planned to go off road so had nothing to get us out. The old prado was stuck just like this but on a 30 degree left to right slope so couldn't pitch the roof top tent. Slept on the sand overnight and worked out I'd have to do exactly what you showed on the vid. Used my hands to totally clear the undercarriage, made a sand ramp to reverse out, dropped tyre pressure and emptied the car of all the camping gear to lighten it. Reversed straight out after all that and saved ourselves a grand quoted by some bloke to come get us out. Only extra I did was try and lighten the car by emptying it. It was refreshing though to watch this and think yeah we did the right thing! Great vid mate as can guarantee from experience it works.
I love the reality of this video. Knew most of what you said, but I just loved how you explained it all. Might just be because I like the accent😂 Greetings from CA, USA
@@rxonmymind8362 if your car has an automatic gearbox brake activates the clutch and it won't work. If your car has manual gearbox, footbrake tecnichally work as an diff lock for four wheels but generally foot brakes much more stronger than handbrake that means when u use footbrake, engine can't turn the wheels. By the way there is another solution when your car is boged: You can tie a strong wood or pipe to outer side of your wheels using blanks on your rims. this piece should be a couple inches longer than diameter of wheels. If u do that strong enough and correctly, it will definitely unbog your wehicle and this works on sand, mud and snow.
Everyone's saying floor mats don't work. Obviously they've never tried using them. They're not MAXTRAX. They aren't rigid. They aren't used to build a bridge out of the hole you dug, but they do help give you a little extra traction and help keep you from sinking deeper.

Because I saw this video last week. Today I got my ranger in a sticky situation (at night) in the sand, but could get out from it. Thanks for the video. Appreciate it mate!! The 129 dislikes were done by selfish morons who do not appreciate the value of helping others with some useful knowledge and experience.
So I hit the beach for my first off road adventure. I've driven short distances on popular beaches before but this was away from the crowds. I did a decent trek along the beach. Found a good spot, parked up did some fishing etc. Didn't reasise a wave had splashed far enough up my leg to wet my key. Got back to the 4WD and the immobiliser wouldn't turn off. I tried everything but ended up calling an auto electrician. $800 later I'm home.
Perfect video and I learned heaps. One comment with the low range gear for maximum torque as stated. I have an identical ute. And I found the issue for getting bogged is having too much torque for that particular terrain with super chunky mud tyres. These few factors will determine how quickly you will bog down... One; mud tyres on sand dig you a fast hole, think of the aggressive tread as little shovels. Two; the bt50 has a spastic amount of torque so either gears; low second or first high (with traction control disengaged), minimising torque will create a more controllable wheel rotation to maintain traction. Note, on beaches, I always geared in 2nd or 3rd with 3300 rpm plus in cooperation with of all your other tips. Great videos lad!

@@MiniLuv-1984 Benny the reason you didn't know that is because you live in the most sheltered state in Australia. Eventually the Labor government will build a wall around it. So what is this beautiful city your talking about. Oh and by the way Victorians are Cabbage Patchers!!

Outstanding video! I recently got into this situation but, without your sense of humor. Would'a been handy though. Thanks for all your hard work to produce it!
Great vid Michael. I see soooo many people getting stuck unnecessarily due to running highway pressures or not airing down enough, being heavily overloaded and towing overloaded trailers/campers. Just a little time to drop your pressures and maybe not take everything including the kitchen sink with you and this scenario should never happen. Another good tip is to try and come to a rolling stop on sand rather than braking hard otherwise you can end up down in the sand. Keep the vids coming for 2019 👍
Yeah happened 5 years ago alone in a lowered car with 18 wheels i did knew that spot before and no problem but that day was windy and i asume the fine particles of sand accumulated in the surface creating a pool. 😕I worked 3 hours without tools just a Sixpack of beers 😂 thanks God a policeman patrolling the zone came to the rescue. Now this Sunday im traveling 1100km to buy a 2008 fj cruiser and well that's how i ended here viewing off road videos 😂
Hi. This is a great video and presentation. Full of great information for a beginner like me. Much appreciated. Even my wife is now happy to have a go at beach driving! Keith
I use 13 psi with my P235 R65 16's. You still get a good grip but the Jeeps weight is distributed over a wider tread surface. I've been off roading for over 40 years, this works for me.
I had to do this when I ran across a patch of sleet in the wood's. This was in the spring, so it was unusual to have any deep snow especially sleet left. I was about 4 miles in the woods bogged to the chassis. No one had been through yet that spring. Lucky for me I had a small shovel so that saved me a ton of time. I will remember to bring a bigger shovel and air down for the future. Great tips, thanks for the video.
@@SeekAdventure You'll want at least a plan B, otherwise we may never see the mighty Mazda again. On the upside, the fail video will go viral for sure though 😜
Excellent video Michael. More 4wd enthusiasts should start with radio controlled cars like rock crawlers to learn the basics of 4W driving. All the recovery gear in the world won’t help a cowboy with a lead foot and an air head!
@@thomasbarlow4223 lol hes talking about the valve stem. If a little stick broke off in there and got stuck, you would have to dig it out quickly or lose all your air. Lowkey may have broke a stick off in a valvestem before. 👀
Great stuff. I cut my teeth on the beaches in WA (Geraldton and Margs) and out in the desert (Warburton) and it was only today I was explaining to a young guy that was bogged on Blacksmiths Beach the exact same method (Even did it with the Car Advice guys when they bogged their test Prado in front of us! They didn't know about it.) Back in the early 80's there was none of the fancy recovery gear or TH-cam vids so we were fast learners and this was a method we worked out with trial, error, bogging and swearing! Excellent vid.
Yep...tried taking the bush road home in winter, was doing really well but then couldn't stay on the road. A skidoo was through before the last snow fall. So i was slidding around, so decided that was enough and got stuck when turning around. Used the shovel to whack some brush and ratchet strap on each tire. Used the mats and brush to bite into. Was enough to turn around threw everthing in the truck and followed my tracks out. F250 with 8 inch lift and 38 tires. I miss that old rust bucket.
♥Many Years later... Happy New Year 2024 Michael! Your videos still warm my heart and soul many years later. I especially like watching you in the in the warm Australian sun when it is cold winter in the USA. ♥
complete noob question: would grabbing a few buckets of sea water to wet the sand help at all? I know that sea water = rusty truck but if you're in a tight spot....?
this is why i cary a multiple digging tools. no one tool is the best tool for the job. yes a shovel will get you out of a bind but when another tool will take 20 min off the digging time and make the job easier.

“Give her the berries” 😂
Ahh! Now I know why Western Australians are called Sandgropers.
Seriously though great video Michael.
I didn't know that Robert - here in Victoria, we call Western Australians - Australians. WA, sports one of the most beautiful cities in the world I reckon, and yes, there is sand everywhere.
@@MiniLuv-1984
Benny the reason you didn't know that is because you live in the most sheltered state in Australia. Eventually the Labor government will build a wall around it. So what is this beautiful city your talking about.
Oh and by the way Victorians are Cabbage Patchers!!
@@robertanderson5796 Oh, there is a central committee that labels and divides this great country of ours? We are one, we are Australian - regardless of where one lives, the colour of their skin, who one votes for or any other categorisation one comes up.

Fuck me started as a bit of a laugh with Michael and you’ve turned it into leftist story about Australia. Mate stay there, we don’t need Australia infected by your fucking weird political views.
The biggest problem in Australia at the moment is you idiots.
Benny Banger
You’ve probably never been out of the snowflake state.
Very Helpful and Informative! These are All-time Effective Ideas! And the dialogue "just waiting for a mate" was very Funny!
Give this guy a tv show.
Or two
I love it when he said ‘ if you got yourself in this situation, its your own fault’
Would letting the tyres down first be better so when you dig you will know for sure when you are clear of the sand.
No it wouldn’t, because it’ll make digging the sand out harder since the vehicle will be applying more weight
Outstanding video! I recently got into this situation but, without your sense of humor. Would'a been handy though. Thanks for all your hard work to produce it!
Needed this video before I got stuck 😭👍
Keith
"Give her the berries" 😆
I use 13 psi with my P235 R65 16's. You still get a good grip but the Jeeps weight is distributed over a wider tread surface. I've been off roading for over 40 years, this works for me.
you are funny mate you made me lough lol
and good info to cheers 👍👍👍👍
Great tips, your a positive, cheerful bloke as well.🎉
First step, sun cream🤙
I had to do this when I ran across a patch of sleet in the wood's. This was in the spring, so it was unusual to have any deep snow especially sleet left. I was about 4 miles in the woods bogged to the chassis. No one had been through yet that spring. Lucky for me I had a small shovel so that saved me a ton of time. I will remember to bring a bigger shovel and air down for the future. Great tips, thanks for the video.
Next time can u do it with the water lapping at the tyres and the tide is coming in? It would be good to see it done under pressure 😂
All the recovery gear in the world won’t help a cowboy with a lead foot and an air head!
definitely DONT USE A STICK.....a certain person i know ...ahem ...did that and the stick jammed the valve open ....so....dont use a stick.
I don't get it
@@thomasbarlow4223 Don't jam the stick into your vehicle while digging yourself out!
I've used my floor mats
That’s a really good idea.
♥
Break tht stik in half and tie it ti th bck wheel both sides
Yeah this works but if you don't do it just right you'll only get half a turn before it smack into your bodywork or worse.
Gas bottle mount looks dodgy asf
It’s all about the driver skills! Awesome job. Another lesson learned. Thanks!
Give it the berries! 🤣👍
Good video, good info, remember guys dont panic...unless the tides coming.
complete noob question: would grabbing a few buckets of sea water to wet the sand help at all? I know that sea water = rusty truck but if you're in a tight spot....?
If driving on wet sand is more firm than dry, then the idea has merit. But how much water would be needed...... hundreds of gallons (or litres).
No. Not at all. Just dig.
@@johnparrish9910 good point. Hence my curiosity. :)
@@wesmccullough8176 thanks mate. "just keep digging, just keep digging"... Wait that's not how the tune goes...
If you're framed out digging or a wench is the only way to get out
Your channel is so underrated.
do you suppose a garden hoe would be useful to drag the sand out from the frame?
I'm no recovery expert but I'd imagine that would work.
this is why i cary a multiple digging tools. no one tool is the best tool for the job. yes a shovel will get you out of a bind but when another tool will take 20 min off the digging time and make the job easier.
it works as long as we dont carry a shed full of yard and garden tools with us hahahaha @@678friedbed
@@thedeathwobblechannel6539 you mean you dont have a weed whacker and a Kitchen sink also? lol
no but i did bring a toilet @@678friedbed
This man needs his own tv show, I would definitely subscribe
How about you simply never go out without recovery gear and tire deflation.
