    The only "turf" grass that is native to north America is buffalo grass. But as of right now, it's just too dang expensive.

    Love my tall fescue yard here in Raleigh. Especially in the spring & fall. It definitely comes with summer time challenges though. Brown patch attacks first in early summer followed up by heat & drought stress. Nasty 1-2 punch.
    Last 2 years I’ve been doing milorgonite for fert and some preventative fungicide treatments in early summer. Not perfect but decent results. Aeration Overseeing seems to be a must each fall.
    Hoping for a mild summer this year!

    Brother, I live in West Tennessee. I’ve been struggling deciding on whether or not I should start overseeding every spring and fall with a cool season mix of Rebel Tall Fescue, Gulf Annual Ryegrass, Legato Perennial Ryegrass, Blue Bonnet KBG, and Survivor Chewings Fescue. And when I say struggle, I mean really bad. I wanted to do it so bad. But, I couldn’t pull the trigger because most of the sections of my lawn (1.5 acres) are in 6 to 8 hours of full sun from 12pm to 6-8pm, the hottest part of the day. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to maintain it well enough to keep it healthy in July, August and sometimes into early September when the heat and humidity peak.
    After watching this video, I feel more confident. That section of your lawn is in full sun most of the day and the fescue (I’m assuming tall turf type fescue) looks great.
    What all do you do to keep it healthy in those harsh months of summer? I’m an organic guy. Only use Milorganite or similar lawn and soil caretaking product like Espoma and topdressing with compost.
    Great job and great video!

    Hey, Pete! I know I'm late to the game on this video but I just discovered your videos about a month ago and am aggressively trying to catch up. I'm in New Mexico with a pretty good jump on a nice Bermuda lawn and was wondering what your thoughts are for over seeding with a cool weather grass for winter? My Bermuda really takes off around June 1 (it doesn't grow tall enough to cut until around then) and will probably grow through September-October. I would like to have a green yard year round but don't have the water to maintain a cool season grass through the summer and like the heat/drought tolerance of Bermuda in the hot months. Any insight you would be willing to share? Thanks!

      You are in the transition zone so you can grow either warm or cool season turf, just understand that whatever you choose will have problems. In transition zone fescue is the most durrable. It has exceptions too, but it's the easiest to maintain and probably the cheapest in the long run. Do your research on whatever type you choose and it will help you decide what is best. Cool season grasses will brown up in the summer, and warm season grass goes dormant in the winter. Fescue will do good in both climates with plenty of water and fertilizer. Hope this helps. I do lawn care for a living and I service well over 600 properties in Kentucky, and I see at least 6 types of grass here. But the majority of them is fescue.

    We are nearly identical to yall in NC here in zone 7 Maryland. Our summers and winters are so close its hard to tell a difference. Winters are unpredictable as its just as likely to be 15F as it is to be 70F. The only time of year that predictable is late spring to mid to late fall, and thats HEAT and HUMIDITY. Its a weird place to live for a few months in winter haha....

    I live just north of your transition zone map. Unless you have an irrigation system and the money to run it constantly in the dog days of summer, your screwed. Been consistently hot and dry here for weeks and no sign of letting up, with no rain. Most people cant afford to water often enough to keep their lawn from dying back and turning brown. I know I cant.

  • @guysolis5843
    @guysolis5843 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm part way through your video. You're talking about cool season and warm season zones. I live near the foothills outside of Denver Colorado and to me the map your showing don't reflect the the changes that have occurred in my state over the past few years. Now summer is very hot and dry, many forest fires and winter here has mellowed and most lawns struggle to survive. It never gets cold enough in the mountains to kill the Pine Beetles and they ravage our trees..Good explanation, I think I'm going with Buffalo grass but still doing some research..

    I'm a little North of you in central VA. I have direct sunlight from sunup until somewhere around five in the afternoon. I plugged my yard with zoysia close to ten years ago and it didn't take. I plugged it again about seven years ago and it is spreading fairly well. I cut my yard at 4" in the front (>50% zoysia) and 3" in the back (I have a dog and like to be able to see snakes and poop back there, mostly fescue). My question is this: in my front yard where I have mostly Zoysia, I have stayed away from putting down fertilizer with weed control so as not to hurt the zoysia (per the company I purchased the zoysia from, Zoysia Farm Nursery) and I seen to have clover in the middle of the zoysia, and crabgrass spreading where there is not zoysia. What are your thoughts?
    Also, thoughts on ultra-fine mulch vs. sand to level out, or top dress, my yard?
    Thank you for your knowledge and info!!

Would a cool season grass be better in front? I think that’s what you were trying to relay when you mentioned different micro climates in your yard.

    So your video begs two questions. First, how do you get your lawn to green up sooner then neighbors. Winter application of N? Second what’s the answer to keeping lawn green once temps get high in summer. Adequate watering is all I can think of.
