I remember when they announced his return for Series 10 and everyone hated it and wondered why they'd bring him back. After seeing Series 10, I'm glad they did; he was a great addition to the TARDIS team and became a great character.

I just read Matt Lucas' autobiography and he talks with some affection of his time with Doctor Who. Nardole was originally written as a one-off character and mainly as comic relief since Christmas specials were always a little more light hearted than the rest of the series, but when he came back as a recurring character it was never intended that he be played just for laughs. It was also really moving -- Lucas had recently lost his partner to suicide, and that partner was a massive Doctor Who fan (Lucas had even bought them Tennant's Tardis when the BBC auctioned it off) and the original read-through almost broke him.
Nardole: "They got my hair wrong" Bill: "You don't have any hair." Nardole: "I got invisible hair." He's the one side action that's more humorous than the 12th Doctor.

I agree/disagree, I can see him being a bit like Donna, he did improve, but I wouldn't say he became a "gem" in the series. I loved what Donna became, but I feel like I could have done without Nardole in a lot of the episodes.
i also agree but also disagree. I loved Donna from the first moment on. And i also found Narolde quit funny in The husbands of River song, but gosh how much i hated him in Doctor Mysterio (this epsiode was shit anyway) But i fall in love with him in season 10 :)
When it was announced the Matt Lucas was staying on as a companion, I was mortified. I mean, I love the guy, but I just couldn't see the short little bald guy from Little Britain as a companion. Glad he more than proved me wrong. Nardole forever!
We all knew that Missy wasn't going to last forever. The pity of it all is she really does have potential to do enormous good, but this might be the closest we get to her realizing it because at its core the character of the Master is much more important as a villain than as a co-hero. I would absolutely L-O-V-E a new iteration of Missy/Master to emerge that takes on more of an antihero role and the doctor has to spend a season alternately stopping the Master and being forced to work with the Master to stop something worse. Make it a little less obvious what the Master/Missy is in the plot to do, and maybe even set up some stories where the Master is the one who has to stop the Doctor.
When you compare Nardole from The Husbands of River Song to how he is in series 10 there's quite a difference. He goes from this squealing, cowardly, bubbling oaf (you've seen Lucas play this type of character before) to a witty, intelligent, bossy, former conman. If the latter was the Nardole we were introduced to, the negative reaction to him being a companion would have been considerably smaller.
Super Skully Ah, do you remember the negative reaction to the return of Donna Noble when fans remembered the Christmas special The Runaway Bride? After the first episode fans began to come round and in time she became a favourite. Do we fans always react badly to change, even when it's for the best? Are Capaldi's eyebrows bushy?
LoriCiani I didn't watch the show that far back but I did hear there were quite a few people unhappy with Donna being a full time companion, partially because they identified Catherine Tate with her comedy characters. There was a similar reaction towards Nardole and from what I've seen Bradley Walsh is getting some of that "why make him a companion of all people?". I hoping Bradley Walsh continues this trend by turning out to be a well-received and underestimated companion.

Yes, I do agree with you about Nardol. A witty foil for the Doctor, given River's permission to kick the Doctor's rear whenever he needed it. I loved Nardole. He was a new who companion who was never in awe of the doctor and didn't really care about going on adventures. He just wanted to be there for him.
The trio of 12, Bill, and Nardole is amazing. Each of them manages to be both comic relief and straightman to the other two whilst being both unique and consistant in characterization. Which is super impressive to me. It would be so easy for all three of them to just feel like The Doctor with the way they bounce between comedy and seriousness, but they don't because they are so well characterized. And it's even better for the short time Missy joins in... It's a pity it took till his last season for Moffat to figure out how to consistantly play to his strengths.
Yeah I think the show was much more rich than what it is now. Those characters were less stereotypical, they had more contrasted personnality. Sometimes they were more serious, sometimes more into comedy, sometimes they were sad or even dramatic. I also think that the chemistry was working very well between the comedians.
Nardole.....a friend of River Song, an ally to 12 and Bill Potts and an Android with ❤ and one HECK of a funny bone.....well circuits. I love those moments during Oxygen, Extremis, The Lie of the Land ( which I called it The Monks Cop Out, not the way you want to end a trilogy ) and Eaters of Light. And you know something, Nardole lived longer than Kamelion, the short lived and troubled Android of the 5th Doctor, the Other Peter...... Davison ( one of my favorite Classic Doctors, along with 4,6, and 7 ). No secret about that Baby Doll, Nardole is a good badass..... with ❤...... and I still miss the Mod Squad of Time and Space, yeah I SAID it; 12, Bill Potts and Nardole, the coolest trio anywhere. Note to 13, you got your work cut out.... we'll find out this Fall won't we? Another fantastic tummy tickler Supercut, 4 out 4, you deserve a 🏅 Sir ! 😄.

Okay am I the only one who has fun imagining what Bill actually sounded like when she said some of her lines during her time as a Cyberman? Specifically when Nardole threatens to kick her arse, Bill goes, “You’d have to go back down to that hospital and find it then.” Imagining those words coming out of a Cyberman is so fucking funny.
What I love the most about Nardole is that his presence is barely justified. He is not a traditionnal companion of the Doctor, not an ennemy neither... He is just Nardole. We don't really understand why he is here and yet, I enjoy to see him every time he shows up.
