Aria was so interesting at the beginning of the show and then the writers didn't even bother to give her a storyline. I blame the Ezra nonsense for my girl's downfall.
I will always believe that Spencer was the best written and best liar over all. She had such depth and so many important stories. She was relatable in many ways. Hanna was also a great character with depth. I could not stand aria even a little bit. I don’t like that they say Emily didn’t get many storylines because she really did lol maya, Allison, her parents, swimming, getting injured, moving in with Hanna, family services with her parents, the egg donating. A lot happens with emily. I love this show so much.
I think the main character on PLL is actually ‚A’ 😅 not specifically people who are ‚A’, but this omnipresent entity that they just can’t escape. Is there any episode not focused on that presence? There isn’t. Even the Christmas special had to have two hints about ‚A’.. I used to wish that there were some episodes when the girls just relax and shop and not be so anxious all the time, but it never happened, and I think there is a reason for it. ‚A’ is a main character !! And I think it’s very different to for example Gossip Girl - GG, the blogger, is not that important in this show, things would be happening without this persons commentary about it. But on PLL, even plotpoints that dont contain ‚A’ at first, get contaminated by ‚A’ in the end (for example Lyndon James plot)
I agree! I’ve always viewed Mona (the first A) as the main character and I feel that she had some of the more complex relationships in the show, like her friendship with Hannah and her hatred of Alison
Emily should have been the main character of seasons 6B and 7. Spencer is my favorite liar, but she already had her time durring seasons 3, 4 AND 5. I wished the storylines of Emily's academic carrer and her father's death had more focus on the show. Emily was the only one really struggling post time jump, it was a great opportunity to gave her more focus and gave her a happy conclusion (lol I'm remembering now, she's a divorced woman post the spin off, they really did her dirty) If Ally was the final A, maybe Emily as the main girl would have worked.
You're pretty spot on with this one! I agree with wishing that the other liars could've gotten friendships outside of their group. That's actually another thing I appreciate about the books, because while they weren't all great, it did provide different storylines and drama. And characters like Emily desperately needed that.

Hanna was my favorite. And I loved Emily. Such a shame she got sidelined. Spencer was alright but Aria was straight up unwatchable for me.
Now, make Aria A and it changes things.

Emily wasn’t that interesting to watch to me. She was always weak at the knees for Alison and it pissed me off. Only reason she got shine was bc of her sexuality
I couldn’t stand Hannah lol Loved Emily but Spender was my favorite. Aria was eh to me but I agree, if she was A it would change things for me too.
hanna was amazing till season 5, after that she got so annoying, Emily was always boring, spencer is fun and aria is also annoying
@@gauravr7216 no fr. Emily’s relationships made her look like an idiot who will take the good w the bad all bc she really likes or loves that person (Alison and Paige). Like she let them both walk all over her and she was a punk about it, she was so timid. Hanna is my favorite and I hate how she got duped by 3 people outside of the liars, who she really cared about (Caleb Mona and Lucas). Even tho I do like that she has other friends besides the main 4. Spencer tho she’s like my 2nd or 3rd favorite next to Hanna and Mona, so I don’t have any big things I don’t like about her. Only small things. Aria on the other hand, she was definitely groomed by Ezra idc! If Marlene king went along w the books Ezra would’ve been arrested and be in jail, where he belongs. Then w him outta the way she’d be A.
i agree with hanna and spencer sharing the main character spotlight. i do think they intended for aria to be the main character originally, and she certainly was in the pilot, but i feel like because most of her storylines revolved around her relationship with ezra we didn't get to see her evolve as a character that much. her plot points aren't so much about her personal character development as they are about ezra. so she doesn't feel like a main character to me. i feel like a case could be made for mona being the main character, kind of in the same way that alison is the main character. more in a behind the scenes kind of way. but mona and alison truly do kick off the events of the show, and keep things going pretty much throughout without taking center stage. they are both hidden main characters, in my opinion.

You are so right about Stranger Things. It always plays it so safe. It has been like 7/8 years since the show premiered and it only has 4 seasons.
All the main characters are still there, they just get a secondary character and kill them off. The show has a bigger cast than it needs.
There's no risk for the characters and I feel like it's been so stretched out. Even though it's only 4 seasons. I'm not even excited about season 5.
Once Spencer found out that Jason was her brother it was over for Aria being the main character.
I honestly would put all 3 main boyfriends and Mona above Allison as main characters
alison was the reason the plot of the show happened in the first place, she was the central character 😭😭 atleast until season 6
I love listening to you talk about this show. Maybe you could do one about how Mona faked her death? Possibly compare how Emily got away with the same thing in the book? Idk just a thought. I haven’t read the books so I’m not sure if it would actually work out right ❤
One of our warm-up essays in preparation for the AP English test essay was to write about a character who you never see, but controls a lot of the narrative of the story. We were given the example of the father in The Glass Menagerie. Most of the seasons seemed like Allison was that kind of character, i.e., someone you never see in real time, but still drives the plot most of the time. When she came back, it kind of took the teeth out of her role in the show. When you think of it, PLL was a poor man's rip-off of the first season of Veronica Mars, except they committed to Lilly being dead.

@@LucyDudgeon23 imo we should have got more of hannah x mona and hannah x caleb (good moments in private, cause they had really good chemistry) and aria was such a great main character and i would have loved to see more of herself too!
I always think of Aria as the main chatacter since shes the one who does the "shhhh" in the theme song

i think the four of them (and alison later on) are supposed to be the main characters. because if u visit each of their wiki page on fandom u will read “hanna marin is one of the main protagonists...” same for the others. i also wish they have kept it like in the books, where no character overshadows the other
