      Thanks. I haven't done this much serious maintenance since I owned a Scimitar GTE. One of the joys of having an old car!

    I also drank the Kool aid and purchased a 2003 Jaguar X-Type. Being the body was in perfect condition and looked amazing . What a mistake! Nothing but problems. As soon as I had one thing fixed something else went bad. Unfortunately I had to take it to my mechanic who charges a hundred dollars an hour. As I don’t have the tools or knowledge to fix myself. The problem is I have so much money invested. I have no choice but to keep fixing it.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems really expensive for a mechanic. I hope they are good and very quick.

    • @Lees706
      @Lees706 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Concept Symetry Guitars Almost everyday mechanic in the U S charges at least that amount. I recently had the alternator replaced. Being they had to remove the air conditioner compressor to get to the alternator and having to refill it again with Freon. The cost of repair was four hundred dollars plus the purchase of an alternator which was 160 dollars. Jaguar is the only car I have ever had where the alternator wasn’t located were it can accessed easily

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Lees706 I have to say that the position of the alternator is one of the worst bits of automotive design I have come across. Being so low down it could easily get drowned and as a wearing part it should be easy to remove. Cars are only designed with a 6 years lifespan so I guess Jaguar though no-one would be changing them 15-20 years later if at all.

    • @Lees706
      @Lees706 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Concept Symetry Guitars I believe the alternator was never replaced. Until I had it replaced. It had the Jaguar stamp on it . So i guess 17 years of service is pretty good. I have a 1988 Cadillac also I was able to replace the alternator myself in ten minutes .

    • @Lees706
      @Lees706 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Concept Symetry Guitars So far the automatic transmission shifts well with no problems. If that goes bad. I’m done with it. Not willing to invest another 3 thousand to replace it. Being my Jaguar has 170 K on it . I’m sure it was replaced before I bought it. X-Types are known for transmission problems

    Thanks! Looks easy to install and will save me a good $300 to $400 bucks in labor. Mine is not leaking but the tensioner pulley is not spinning which caused the water pump belt to come off leading to overheating. I've read its best to replace the water pump when that happens.

    Greatings Sir,
    Good job, i have a question , is this pump same for "Ford Mondeo" mk3 ?
    I heard it was, myne just broke, and i can easily find one for Ford, and Jag original i would have to wait for a week or something? I supouse belt is not the same length but the pump is..
    Regards

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The water pump is a Ford part and easy to get as a pattern part. I usually get mine from Eurocarparts. Circoli or Aitex. They have 45% off at the moment. I don't know if it is the same as a Mondeo Mk3 but it wouldn't surprise me.

    To release pulley belt, 15mm spanner turned right on the tensioner, not the mounting bolt nut as in vid.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Whatever works. I've done this four times now.

    • @jamesmacdonald3090
      @jamesmacdonald3090 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@johnnysevengun The tensioner mounting bolt isn't designed to be for that, hence an 8mm, best practise is using the 15mm and if the tensioner is that stiff it needs replacing?

  • @michaelstevens32
    @michaelstevens32 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Did you notice a small amount of rotational play on the big pulley? I just changed the tensioner on mine.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. It should be pretty solid as it is the drive wheel for the pump. If the car is very old then it probably doesn't matter.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Jag is only doing a few miles a week at the moment so I fully expect it to start playing up when the cold weather comes. Several people have told me the starter motor is an easy job once you have pushed the cables and pipes out of the way.

    I just wanted to say, thank you for your videos they have all been very helpful to a Jaguar noob (I do have automotive experience) but still very helpful and I have just noticed a coolant leak on my 02 X-type with a 3.0 and it looks like the water pump as well,, just a quick question though, why is the clock position of the pulley you removed important?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I always put back pulleys the way they come off just in case they have been balanced in the factory or the holes are not quite aligned due to wear. Its probably not important on modern cars.

    Sorry only watched the video on silent at work quickly. Did you use gasket glue?

    • @johnnysevengun

      No. In this video I had a brand new gasket. In the past I have made paper gaskets and used Blue Hylomar which I will use again if this one needs resealing.

    hi from where did you buy the gasket?

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The gasket came with the new pump. Previously I found I could not buy the gasket on its own so I bought some gasket paper and made one which lasted over two years until the pump failed. I see them on ebay for £8-£24.

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Th e body, engine, drive train, electrics and steering are all still original as is the exhaust system. Th other ancillaries you would expect to change with age. I was unlucky that I bought a badly kept car and then dropped it down a pothole that meant most of the rear suspension had to be replaced bit by bit.

    I don’t really see the point in putting fresh anti freeze and distilled water into a car with a known leak!

    • @johnnysevengun
      @johnnysevengun  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      What would you put in it? I don't have any old readymix and it is subzero so I can't just put water in it. This way you only lose the amount of clean antifreeze that comes out of the pump and you don't have to drain the whole system to make sure the coolant is good.
