I had this therapy several years ago. It set me free from demons and anger I did not understand. It is truly an amazing tool. I wish more people knew about it. And would do this to heal their minds and hearts.

Nice overview, lots of comparison with other approaches to treatment. I was helpful for me to hear about so many clinical validations of EMDR. I only wish there was more about EMDR itself, but I am sure other talks by Ms Shapiro will do that.

I was sent to a therapist after a severe trauma which put me in the Victim Services therapists. I had spoke to my psychiatrist who told me I need ed EMDR not one therapist would do this proceedure because the victims services would stop payment after I was healed/ I am blessed because I am a nurse. I was exploited told after my trauma from domestic violence to
try online dating and I nee d to realize that my 4 stalkers were proving I wa s still desirable. I left that totally harmful therapist. I am sure she has hurt more than helped. At this point if EMDR is not going to be part of my care plan I will no longer go to that therapist. I kno w the treatment will work , I will no longer relive a lifetime of trauma over and over without the treatment of EDMR. I suffer from severe pain r/t fibromyalgia which is a negative feedback loop where my cortisol is not able to realize I am not needing to be in survival mode there fore the low grade continous cortisol is burning my nerves of every organ. I will stop this feedback loop , stop cortisol , and then the fibro will be relieved and my adrenals may heal and no more pain. This is the root problem and a pill is not going cover up my body that need s to be healed from a life time of trauma in my brain. It has been my experience that in the medical model many easy make sense treatments are way to simple and works and yet doctors complicate a simple problem into a emergency. Doctors have a very big problem with common sense. I am done , I will go thru any/all trauma with a good EMDR therapist and the n I will be healed. Thank you for being a pioneer and yes it is a fight.

I hope you’re better! What you described about your trauma, medical issues and cortisol and the way EMDR heals the body makes so much sense. And I hope you reported that horrible therapist. She should be stopped from harming more people.

Excellent! BUT - please change your musical/sound effect logo as it comes out much too loud and is hurting our ears. The high frequency "BINK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" at the end is triggering. Thanks!

1 Qs. I have a curious mind which can't stop researching.
So, if I'm continuously doing extensive research on EMDR before even starting EMDR therapy, can it reduce it's efficacy when in therapy?
Is it better that I don't know much about it beforehand?
If the answer is "Yes", then I'll stop reading more about it before therapy.

not a doctor, but in my opinion being educated about any type medical procedure does not affect it's efficacy.
even, on some instances, reading about how therapy works can be a great help in understanding the process and maybe even make the effects more felt.

Can this work for heartbreak? I am still in love with someone who I fell in love with over 20 yrs ago. She ghosted me. I never got an explanation as to why she no longer wanted to be with me. I found out a few years ago she was married and that sent me into a downward spiral. I’ve recently found out she has children. I’m devastated. I can’t stop thinking about her and I’m stuck in the past, i can’t move on. Can emdr help with this?

Maybe you have something called BPD. And it is a serious of problems in youre relationship. Maybe look atactment and Tim Fletcher presentation on fear of abondenment. Maybe you have something from the scale. I had expirience like yourse, and after watching that video I found out that BPD is diagnosis I have. It is generally good to have some diagnosis because tretaments are different. I was searching for help for 20 years, and psychiatrist always made mistake, that Im anxious or depresed. And they treat only chemical imbalance of the brain, amd you can never be healed woth this suppression of symptoms. There is always some thing about atactment isssue in the background and some default core belief. About difference in CBT and EMDR treatment, I tried it. I dont belive in CBT because it is changing the external, and the process is always internal. Some parts of the brain or vagus are not conected. And you cant wire brain with speaking to it. You have to make conections in the brain. Only EMDR and Somatic psychotherapy worked to shift me. And Im still working with therapist who does both of this therapies. And Im gretfull to have her on my side. EMDR is very hard to take. But youre brain finds its own way to make some conclussion of the events. All of the emotions and beliefs being revealed. You cant escape youre pain, or negotitate about it. We often have anxiety about emotions raising up, jo metter what emotion it is. But when you have that ride wave in EMDR it is not so big problem. So go for it. Best regards

EMDR is for your amygdala and CBT is for your cortex so do both.

We do not need to cognitively repeat the horror we need our brain changes to be changed. Not by talking by working at a brain level. Oh and I have taken medications and yet the trauma is not addressed. No more. I feel , I am human , I have been traumatized not victimized. No more Cognitive except a therapist that will create a safe space to do the EMDR and the brain injury from trauma and as I am led and assisted with by a good therapist this will work ......

Avalon Mist, I was a victim of domestic violence and left with PTSD. First, I recommend finding a therapist with a background in DV. Second, a couple of books that really helped me are Lundy Bancroft's "Why does he do that? Inside the mind of controlling and abusive men" (explains what your partner was doing) and Patricia Evans "Verbally Abusive Relationships" (Lundy says all DV starts with verbal abuse, Patricia explains what that looks like).
Third, I've been working with "Taming the Outer Child" to work with the inner and outer child to address emotions and fear. I use subliminal messaging to deal with negative mental chatter and I have been using EMDR videos from TH-cam. I also work with a therapist who uses EMDR.
Lastly, I recommend researching narcissistic personality disorder. Thriving after abuse is a great resource, as is Psychopath Free. My abuser, it turns out, was a covert narcissist. Many NPDs -especially covert narcissists - engage in DV. It's also well known in the NPD community that Internet dating is full of NPDs and not a safe place to date. I'm glad you stop seeing the therapist who recommended on online dating. She isn't well informed. Keep looking until you find one who works for you.

@@Bahbahlatje Helpful info. Makes a lot of sense about online dating. Certainly has been my experience. My recent ex narc even admitted that he was addicted to it. The one before him was too. Both had a porn addiction (I later learned). Am never venturing into online dating again.
