DJI PHANTOM 3 CAMERA SETTINGS

  • I recently did a video on the DJI Phantom 3 Professional quadcopter that I've been using. I've had several people since ask me about the camera settings that I am using on the Phantom 3.
    Aerial photography and video work is similar to landscape in that you have a very wide dynamic range that you have to deal with. Its difficult to capture in digital format. The Phantom 3 features a Sony Exmor sensor… having said that it is a decent camera, but not incredible. There are some settings that you can use in the DJI Go app that will help with your footage considerably. I will explain these in this video.

    There's an art to teaching off the cuff like this. You have a fine balance of knowledge, wisdom and humility that makes your vids hugely watchable, especially as the overloaded internet conspires to steal our precious time. Every second counts! Thanks.

    Great to have a photographer talk about photographing with a drone. Everyone talks of the dramatic footage with a bunch of ooo's and ahhh's.... right up to the point of how to tune the camera and work in post. As a working photographer, I liked having someone actually walk through their experience with the camera part of the drone.

    Thanks for posting this video. I was going crazy trying to get good results from my Phantom 3 video until I watched your tutorial. great video..thanks! I am thinking of changing to RAW instead of JPEG. Never done that before so trying to learn. When I switch to RAW what difference will it make? shadows better? Also I am going manual and trying to adjust things. It seems my camera is out of focus more. Could that be cause it needs to be light for the focus to work better? thanks for any advice..

    Great video! Took a break from aerial photography/cinematography for several years on a regular basis. Long story short I have been fighting for my sons rights (he is disabled). Gotta love living in London England and dealing with politics, budgets and nonsense. My wife, son and I am are grateful that we will be moving into a completely adapted home to accommodate our sons needs in the very near future.
    So looking forward into getting back into a pastime I am passionate about (aerial photography/cinematography). DJI sure has come a long way as time has gone on. Decisions decisions when it comes to upgrading from my old school P2V+. Going forward with a Phantom 3 Professional or at a minimum an P3 Advanced would be a huge increase in performance. Got kicked in the nuts with the Mavic Pro's announcement. Certainly cool however torn between going with a Phantom 3 Professional or Advanced at this point.

    I do all my drone footage editing on an iPad Pro, which limits the changes I can make post filming. It's extremely difficult to get the kind of finished footage you just did, with any true consistency anyway. Do you do your editing on a laptop, a good laptop makes video editing a lot more versatile.

    Hi Ted, you certainly made video editing interesting AND easy to follow! :-) I'm on Windows (10 to be exact), so it's either Adobe Premiere Elements or Filmora for me (any advice would be great here).

    Thanks for the excellent tutorial. I am a huge fan of the Phantom 3. The camera is really nice, and 1080p 60 is extremely useable. I am constantly surprised at my ability to push colors and shadows in post. The highlights do clip pretty dramatically if you're not careful though.

    Great video! Very informative, I have a quick question though! If you're filming in bright sunlight and have an ND filter on your drone would you still use these type of settings? Or is there a different way to set it up? Thanks in advance!

    • @otm777
      @otm777 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Marlon “MarlonPTY” Torres Yes, you would still use the color settings shown in the video. As you know, ND filters are used to control the overall "exposure" of the video by allowing you to lower the shutter speed to create a more cinematic feel (sense of motion). So, if you apply the 'rule of thumb' for setting shutter speed (i.e. 2x frame rate) and do not use an ND filter, the image/video will likely be over-exposed.
      Shooting in D-Log or D-Cinelike is more of a 'dynamic range' setting that allows you to preserve important highlight & shadow details.. So instead of letting the camera assign a color (which will affect the dynamic range), D-Log gives you a flat profile intended for post editing.
      That being said, you wouldn't use D-Log to control exposure, and wouldn't use ND filters to alter color. They are both important and typically go hand-in-hand / used in unison. At least that's my understanding.

    I am noticing a lot of my DJI Phantom 3 Professional footage has a lot of Anti-Aliasing issues with what looks like lines moving lines or patterns on buildings, pavement, or objects. Will these settings in this video help reduce the issues I am experiencing? I checked the footage on the card and I do not notice any of that so I am now wondering if its how I am transcoding the clips that is causing that to happen. I am using MPEG Streamclip to convert the DJI footage to Apple Pro Res 422 to edit in Final Cut Pro 7.

    Great information, thank you. I have had that sharpness texture - squiggle effect in video, particular over rooftops, as you said. The PC gaming industry calls it aliasing - the context is the same. But I tried sacrificing resolution for frame rate, and that helped a lot where 1080p at 60 or 120 FPV will take it out, or slowing the movement too. Albeit, I am a novice photographer but that's my two cents worth. Again, thanks for the info! Subscribed 😎

    • @breakfast-burrito
      @breakfast-burrito 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Andrewje85 Probably not. The D-Log likes to squish the highlights and shadows a lot. I would choose one of the more standard color spaces. That way you can get the best image possible without touching it in any post production software.

    hi, can you share what's the best settings (iso & shutter speed) for night photoshoot on the phantom 3 standard? thanks! =)

      Shutter speed should be low and double your frame rate, ISO should be the lowest, and also use an Nd filter for motion blur.

    I have one of these quadcopters and haven't been impressed with the image quality. I will give these adjustments a try.
    Has anyone experienced great video playback on a phone, but the video quality stinks on a larger screen (TV or PC screen)?
