The THUMB PICK is Such A Game Changer for Guitar Players!

  • 🎸Thanks a lot to Black Mountain for sending this fantastic thumb pick.
    This video is sponsored by Black Mountain Thumb Pick (blackmountainpicks.com)
    🎸IN THIS VIDEO
    I never tried to play with a thumb pick before, so my timing and accuracy were all over the place. However, I really like the tone and volume you can get out of your Guitar with the thumb pick.
    For you who don't know, the thumb pick is a pick that you wear on the thumb. You can use it as a regular pick but also combined with the fingerpicking technique.
    As a fingerstyle player, I never felt the need to use a thumb pick. I started as a classical guitar player, so plucking the strings with my fingertips and fingernails has always been natural for me.
    However, I am always looking for a challenge. I love to try new things. When Black Mountain got in touch with me, asking me to try one of their spring-loaded thumb picks, I took the challenge right away.
    In this video, I will show you the difference between playing with the thumb and thumb pick. I will play chords, scales, arpeggios, percussive techniques, and rhythmic techniques, and more.
    Will the thumb pick make my playing better? Let's find out.
    If you get inspired by this video, make sure you get yourself a thumb pick (any brand would work). Keep challenging yourself. Try new things. Keep yourself motivated.
    Enjoy the video.

    Are you a full-time TH-camr?
    Yes, I am on TH-cam as Marco Cirillo, and I promote my videos on my website BlitzGuitar.com. All the courses I post online are available on my Patreon page bit.ly/2rMAPYG.
    How long have you been playing Guitar?
    I started playing Guitar when I was 10 years old, so it has been more than 20 years. I have always loved fingerpicking guitar, so this is why all my tutorials focus on this topic.
    Why are you on Patreon?
    Patreon is great! It allows creators to make money doing what they love. On Patreon, I can share my guitar lessons with my Patrons and get paid for it. As a creator, I feel like Patreon really made a massive difference in the way I share my content :)
    Do you do concerts?
    I used to do a lot of gigs in the past. London is a great place to play music almost every day. When my TH-cam channel started to grow, I decided to go all-in and try to help as many people as possible learning guitar. This goal takes all the time I have available, so I am not doing any gig or concert atm.

    If the thumb pick is too tight, you can adjust your thumb pick by putting it in some hot water for a few seconds then adjust the pick to the thumb before the pick cools down too much.

    I use the Black Mountain pick have been for about 3 months now, off and on. Use it mostly when playing at church, but still not completely comfortable using it for some of my songs that I do with a fingerpicking pattern...for playing in mass I usually do strumming or a flat picking pattern, or combination, depending on the song. I really do like the pick, and it doesn’t slip out of my grip while playing...sometimes into the sound hole which is embarrassing when playing in public! Thanks for a great review of this simple but effective tool.

    With or without thumb pick you are great Marco! In my personal opinion, it all depends on how you got used to playing the guitar (with or without thumb pick) and in my case, I tend to play some pieces or choose to play them with the thumb pick and others without it. But seeing you play with the thumb pick Marco, encourages to keep using the thumb pick! Cheers from Chicago Marco and followers!

    Got my own as well, they are are little uncomfortable cos they have a different build quality than a regular Dunlop thump with just hook unto your hard. But this black mountain pick feels more like a thumb pick and a pick and it it takes sometime to get used to it. But it's worth the time & practice.
    Ps: it's not really great for strumming, but perfect for fingerstyle especially if you like a lot of base and you like your guitar sounding full

    I do have one of these picks but must admit I dont really like it very much. Firstly it is uncomfortable to wear , secondly it is way too loud especially if used for strumming and thirdly very difficult to upstrum with.
    Perhaps better for finger- picking,Travis style etc but see little benefit for classical or strumming work. Somehow, for me, one can’t beat just using one’s bare hands without any other artificial accoutrement! Sensitive play and tonal subtlety can better be achieved that way in my opinion.

    I've used a Herco flat thumb pick for years and now can hardly get by without. It is the easiest way that I've found to both finger pick and strum in the same song. I have never understood why they are less popular than regular picks.

    • @garysellars8914
      @garysellars8914 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't really shred with them though. i agree they're good but also the material starts wearing at the edges if you're picking hard and it becomes kind of rough and gives a rasping sound. I tried the pick clip by Chris Broderick, have you tried those? Those are good but have their own problems as well. When you mount your pick of choice very little pick protrudes past your thumb and you can get a lot of accidental harmonics.

  • @louispouliot4102

    I don't use them because i found it hard to master and make it sound loud (Need to work around a lot more) but virtuoso like Dadi and Atkins always use them. When nicely use, nicest sound you can have. For younger players, go go go and use it now.

    I've been playing without apick for years. Recently I wanted to start playing blues and single string lead melodies with more speed than I can with out a pick. So I'm trying to get used to a thumb pick . I can have use of all my fingers.i can grab chords and have the pick ready for the single note runs. But I don't like the numbing feeling in my thumb .I'll keep on it. I'm using a Dunlop L .

    Sir, is it okay if thumb pick touch lower strings while picking?
    It's my confusion, while I pick with thumb pick mainly while picking 6th string my thumb pick touches 5th string though 5th string doesn't ring out loudly most of the time. Or I should practice & focus that while picking with thumb pick lower string don't get touched any way..?
    If you response to this, I will be very grateful to you. Thank you! Please.. 🤗

    Hey Marco! I've always wanted to try one of these. If you visit my channel you'll see that use a TP and play in an unusual way with it. What I'm wondering is just how "fixed" is that pick to the pad of your thumb. Is there any flex at all? It seems to me that with a spring holding it on there wouldn't be..?

  • @michaelblankenstein

    Thumb picks work well for almost anything except up strumming. Marco, have you tried up-strumming with it?

    • @MarcoCirillo
      @MarcoCirillo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I agree. It takes a lot of control to strum upward with the thumb pick. Even with a guitar pick like the one I was using in this video, which is just like a regular guitar pick, it took me a while to get the right strumming.

    • @michaelblankenstein
      @michaelblankenstein 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarcoCirillo I have tried a number of types, but always come back to the white Dunlop that Tommy Emmanuel uses. He said it took him quite a while to both down and up strum with it. Another interesting thing is "up picking" with the thumb pick. It is actually much easier than up strumming. Take care and thanks for your videos...

    Strange build for a thumbpick. What's with the hinge? Dunlop makes a few different thickness gauges. My grandfather played with a thumbtack so I was exposed to this before a standard pick. Naturally, I kept dropping the stand pick all the time because I was already used to the thumbtack.

    The real problem with a thumb pick is the disparity in volume between the strings plucked with the thumb (LOUD!) contrasted with the strings picked with the fingers ( . . . much softer). Is the only way around this to use picks on each finger as well as the thumb?

      With a Dunlop thumb pick I keep tapping the body with it because it's so long compared to a regular pick, so I gave up on it. The Black Mountain is the size of a regular pick, so I think I might give it a try.

      Hi Desert Dweller. Only reason I would think for costly picks is material has to be tough to endure the constant flexing. I've played since the early seventies and tried most brands available and thicknesses. Now I'm only using Gary Wagoner and Mathew Goings. One sells out of Washington state and the other has a product line named Blue Chip. I've never heard a player complain on either. Pick Guy is the other product name if I remember correctly. Worth every penny.

    This is a good video but all of the strumming is down stroke. As with any thumbpick,, they don't do great with upstroke if you're an up and down strumming but you can't do that with any thumbpick. I have one, I like it but it's not life changing and most of the time use a regular dunlop thumbpick. That said, the spring is a useful innovation for people with large thumbs like myself. I hope they try some modifications in the future as the entire guitar pick size is not necessary. IMO.

    I got used to, as a boy, playing with my bare thumb and fingers. I was about five years old. I taught myself until I was in high school then had formal guitar lessons. By that time I had already taught myself to play blues, some jazz, Brazilian etc mostly by ear by copying songs I liked from my mom’s eclectic LP library of music. I also taught myself to read music. The only book I had on our farm as a boy was an old Mel Bay music book. In high school I furthered my theory knowledge and in college I got two degrees in undergrad school in music theory and guitar performance. Not until college did I begin to use a thumb pick. I have rarely ever used a flat pick. I still play both ways (thumb pick and fingers/bare thumb and fingers) I mostly favor now the thumb pick method except when playing Brazilian music on a classical guitar. I like the Black Mountain pick and also the Fred Kelly Speed Pick. Great review video. Thank you. I just subscribed.
