    The A6S+ has a more versatile tone with a bit more edge on hand when you need it. The 5M can certainly give you some edge when you need it, but the A6S+ is a better mouthpiece all around.
    I played a 5M for years too, but then upgraded to an A7S and it has allowed me to cover a lot more ground.

    Vandoren! But i play a new Berg Larsen from the factory in Brussels, Ebonite 95/3 M facing curve. They have stepped up the quality control.
    Flawless workmanship. A great piece. In tune and even all the way. Large chamber , warm fat sound, all dynamic levels.
    Sorry to write so much, but you asked.

      Yes Vandoren indeed was my choice! Nice Mouthpiece! write away! I always encourage you and everyone to write away since it helps and informs me so much on a piece like yours that I didn't know about! So thank you for that and Thanks for watching!

    I used to have a modern Meyer 6M but I ended up selling it. I don't think the table on it was 100% flat as I had a bit of an airy, slightly stuffy sound so I sold it and I switched to a Vandoren V16 5M. I did consider getting an S+ at first but I thought the small chamber might be a bit too projecting for me. I like the 5M as it has a good clear tone that isn't dark or too bright and makes it blend well. For me it is easy to play and keep in tune.

      Interesting insights! I didn't know about the table. Thanks for watching and for sure will be talking more about the comparison!

    Both of them sound very nice, but the second one sounds clearer, has a very nice vibration and projects much better.

      I agree but both mouthpieces are great!

    I also went from a Meyer 5 to a Vandoran a number of years ago, but I play the Java A45. For my taste and blowing style, the Vandoran is far richer sounding.

      Thanks for watching! Definitely the best move so far was moving to the v16. I would love to try the Java!

    Aside from liking the V16 tone better, it seemed to also have better tuning. Like the tuning just locked in right away compared to the meyer where there may have been a couple notes that were a bit off and of course you being a great musician heard it and adjusted a immediately after. Would you say that the free blowing quality of the V16 helps voicing the horn in a way that it is in tune with itself better?

    • @MAlexRamirez
      @MAlexRamirez  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the comment! I'd have to say that those who have similar setups tend to be easier to blend with for sure. And as for intonation, it fits much better on the horn!

    Wow! I love hearing the two mouthpieces back to back. So interesting to hear the subtle differences. I definitely like the second one best!

    2 things: How did you know the rails were wearing out on the Meyer? What are the signs? And as for the comparison and intonation others have already mentioned, I definitely agree the Vandoren sounded better. I wondered if it might be easier to compare playing sans vibrato.

    • @MAlexRamirez
      @MAlexRamirez  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe! the main signs are when you start to see that the rails begin to round off as opposed to being sharp and having that sharp angle into the mouthpiece. For the vibrato I would have to agree haha thanks for the suggestion. I'll have to be very careful next time to really be neutral for both mouthpieces.

    what do you do to the rails that make a new mouthpiece wear that much in such a small timeframe I wonder...

    The thing for me is that my Meyer’s table is not flat and it is so hard to feel the vibration of the reed. I think select jazz is also great to check out.

    • @MAlexRamirez
      @MAlexRamirez  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm thank you for the feedback! I'd have to agree with you on that and its very important for the table to be flat. I like the jazz select for sure and for me it can be so easy to break in which is great!

    You got more sizzle with that vandoren. I have a the same v16 mouthpieces in 6, and 7 (this one is hand finished by another refacer) but I didn’t like them. I play on a 5m meyer too.

    Have u tried a bigger Meyer? I play a 7 atm, and Meyer traditionelly got quite small Chambers. I tried a 5 once but could not play it coz it was so tiny. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on a bigger one

    Sounds great man, great video. Babbitt Meyers make me sad. They are a Greek Tragedy...much like Link and many other former greats. By the way...thanks to Covid, true NY Meyers have never been cheaper. Meyer Bros 4-6 (the Cannonball vintage, which would cost 2K+ before March) are going for less than 800 now. Not sure if you've ever owned any, but right now is (unfortunately) one of the best opportunities to play one.

    • @MAlexRamirez
      @MAlexRamirez  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had on in the past actually but the rails gave out and it would have been more to repair the mp than to get a new one but yes indeed the quality has gone down since then!

  • @stangetz534

    The Meyer has more body and complexity. The Vandoren is smoother, probably easier to play, and smaller. For me the Meyer is more of a jazz classic sound. Both sound good though! Just different.

    Vandoren👍🏻

  • @grantkoeller8911
    @grantkoeller8911 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The tuning was off on the 2 mouthpieces. The meyer was flatter and the vandoren was sharper. Next time use a KORG tuner, for concert Bb tuning note and use a pen mark on the cork for each mouthpiece. You sound great on both pieces, however the small plus chamber is brighter, perfect for lead alto in big band.

    • @MAlexRamirez
      @MAlexRamirez  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oohh I gotta get that tuner! Thanks for the advice Grant! I really do prefer the vandoren piece more now and it really has changed how I play tone wise and range wise as well. Thanks for watching!

      I recommend the KORG CA-30, or the CA-40 both fully chromatic tuners with pitch reference too!
