  • The Tree can be seen as a symbol of order as it converges into the one, but it can also be seen as order as it separates into the many.

When you talked about Jesus wearing the crown of thorns, it struck me in the heart. I will spend my life, and I am sure my afterlife, drinking in the truth of His sacrifice, love, and absolute glory. I will be always feeling for His parameters, but He absolutely exceeds parameters. Thank you, Jonathan. When I learn about Jesus, with the Spirit’s help, I am soaring. ❤️

As an Arborist this explanation touched me deeply.
I remember the day I choose to work with the trees and the feeling I had looking up into a huge white pine in a meditative state deep in the forest. I felt that up there between the crown and the sky was a connection I needed to explore to find myself(something like That?).
Best decision I could of made at the time , shortly there after I left the military, started working with trees. 12 years later I have a great outdoor job I love and a family with two healthy children.
    Thanks, love your insight.

The picture you keep flaunting of Adam on one side and eve on the other with the serpent literally represents the three pillars of the tree of life. Your attempt to deflect this puts the fig tree at the bottom... this would mean purity leads to the knowledge of good and evil. What non sense. God told them if they ate from the tree they would surely die. Eve represents Adams darkness. God in the crnter masculine and feminine energy on ether side. In the beginning there was darkness. Greeks called it chaos. Divine feminine. Hence the virgin birth leading to the divine masculine. That's why eve was the first sinner. She disobeyed God by eating the fruit. This represents Adam facing his own darkness. Through this act they did in fact ascend. For the fruit is actually the all seeing eye. Sirius. Did God tell a lie? No. They died and were reborn! The two tree's in the garden represents the brain stem and the ether on either side of the ruver of God. The four rivers are the four ventricles that carry your cerebral spinal fluid.       16 "Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
and all her paths are peace.
      18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called happy."
The Tree of Life is the Torah. And in it is contained G-ds Law. "O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day." King David

I remember a Greek Orthodox professor saying that when the eyes of Adam and Eve were opened, they saw-not only their own nakedness but also-Christ on the cross. Turning their eyes from the cross, they then saw how all the world followed the cycle of cross-tomb-resurrection, and rather than participate in this cosmic order by embracing any cross or vulnerability themselves, they instead tried to flee this order and return to the non-being from which they came-if only through hiding themselves. I want to say he attributed that to Maximus, but after years of searching (and a bit of thesis research) I still can't track down which of the fathers came up with this gloss.

A fractal is like a tree. The tree is a library of values and an embodiment of principles.

    Words/Fruit
    Seeds/Ideas
    Heart/Garden

    Water/Thought
    Plant/Hear
A tree produces fruit and when consumed there are seeds within and get planted in the garden, with water and light the seed will spring forth.
A brain speaks words with ideas and when heard, with thought and knowledge you can manifest.

@@divinegraceberbano1256 Thank you @Ron Tate, I suppose the best place to start explaining what the physical things of this realm translates to in the realm of allegory/metaphor so let us start with the "4 Elements" which are both literal and metaphorical and by the way the word element is a compound word,
      (EL= Of God in masculine)
      (Le = Of God Feminine)
(Ment = of the Mind) It is a suffix of Latin origin which means; the product of doing something a.k.a. "finished work".
The first element is Air (Literal=Air, Metaphorical=Breath) which is the most important or the Alpha, it is in all the other elements as well, the word "Spirit" is from the Latin word Spiritus which means Breath. We use Air to breath and to speak which passes knowledge. God is a Spirit which means that God is Air.
The second element is Fire, (Literal=Fire, Metaphorical=Light/Knowledge) Fire is an energy which empowers, an Atom/Energy creates, Atum/The Sun creates, Adam/The 1st Son creates which by the way all were split into two to create. Light is the first of all creation, it is through light that all things were created.
The third element is Water, (Literal=Water, Metaphorical=Thought) Water gives life, it is a powerful force on this planet, thought is about the most powerful force of the mind, water gives life and it's through thought that we conceive or manifest things into this realm, (Mary/Mariah/Maria) means "Sea of sorrow", She conceived the "Son of God".
The fourth element is Earth (Literal=Earth, Metaphorical=Body) In Genesis the first appearance is God/Air, He hovers of the Waters/Thought and says; "Let there be Light/Fire/Knowledge"

Great video. I have also done some investigation into this symbolism and come across another fascinating connection. I'll try to keep it brief. The Hebrew word for tree is "etz". When the LXX translators came to this word they had to decide between two greek words for "tree", dendron and xulan. For most uses they put dendron. However, for verses referring to a cursed tree (cursed is everyone hung on a tree), they would use the word xulan. Now fast forward a few hundred years, the book of Revelation never mentions the cross, however, it often mentions the tree of life, specifically, the "xulan" of life in greek. We can see here that John is making a connection between the tree of life in the garden and the cross. But it gets better. The rule from the garden is that if you eat the fruit of the tree of life you live. And in John 6 Jesus tells us to eat his body and blood, in other words, to partake of the "fruit" of the "tree of life", that is, his body on the cross. But what is the tree of the knowledge of good and evil? Well, knowledge of good and evil comes through the law, and Moses represents the law. He also had a tree, specifically, his staff. And his staff turns into a snake, just like there was a snake in the tree of the law in the garden. So the two trees represent the two covenants. The tree of the law, which is supposed to impart life, actually brings death (see Romans). And the xulan, which is supposed bring death and a curse, is actually what brings life.

I know it's been 5 years since you wrote this, but I just found this video by Jonathan. You are so right! I also came to the conclusion that the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was the law. The law reveals the perfect God, but convicts all mankind, as Paul pointed out, it shows us our sins. I didn't know about the 2 words for tree and that is an awesome find and showing how the same word in connection with the cross is used for the tree of life in Revelation and His body as the fruit, is awesome!

Rather he embraces his vulnerability "despising the shame".

I remember reading Dante’s Purgatory and my surprise that the Garden of Eden was at the top of a mountain. When Dante and Virgil climbed back up to the surface of the earth from Hell, they were in the southern hemisphere which was portrayed (if I remember rightly) as a vast ocean because all land had been moved to the northern hemisphere. I can’t remember why. So they sail the ocean until they get to this island which consists of the different levels of Purgatory. I had no idea why Dante chose this scenario but your video makes me think that maybe he was drawing a picture of sinful humanity rising up from the chaos of the ocean to be cleansed as they worked their way back to the type of relationship Adam had enjoyed with God before the Fall.

Thank you for your videos on symbolism, Jonathan. For years, I have been enraptured by mythology and its symbolic significance, though I don't have quite the brain-power to tie these concepts together.
As an Orthodox Christian and writer, I am sometimes hesitant to dive too deeply into the symbolic meaning of events in the Bible because I'm afraid of being labeled a heretic or just another liberal Christian who doesn't have enough faith to believe in the events, and so I'm attempting to "spiritualize" them.

Hey Jonathan, I was listening to this very interesting meditation on how the crusifixion contained all the elements of the garden of eden. You mentioned the cross being 2 trees and the thorn crown being the fourth tree. I realized that the vig-tree is also there. As I recall the soldiers were gambling the undercloths of christ underneath the cross. Fascinating how your symbolic explanations are so readily extendible and applicable. Regards.

      From Wiki:
In all gospel accounts, Pilate is reluctant to condemn Jesus, but is eventually forced to give in when the crowd becomes unruly and the Jewish leaders remind him that Jesus' claim to be king is a challenge to Roman rule and to the Roman deification of Caesar. Roman magistrates had wide discretion in executing their tasks, and some readers[who?] question whether Pilate would have been so captive to the demands of the crowd. Pilate was later recalled to Rome for his harsh treatment of the Jews.[27][28] The tree of Good and Evil is the border between order and chaos
The story literally embodies the sentiment of them saying that the world was not ready to live in harmony between order and chaos. That people were still too chaotic to achieve Eden. That in eating from the tree of Good and Evil they'd actually attained some good. But they were still too evil. That is, they had attained some measure of order, some measure of control over their subconsciousness, over their lives. Some measure of control over their baser instincts and had started to be able to really project themselves out on to the world. He's then demonstrating that they'd not eaten enough from the tree. One taste was not enough. You need to eat more. He's literally saying there's not enough order. Neither in ourselves, nor in our societies. He's literally demonstrating that by having the chaotic mob tell him to kill the Tree of Life. To cast it away when it was presented to them again, for they were not yet ready, and then...
"Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.".
I mean wow. That's pretty incredible? I don't even know what to think of this.

I think certain types of people have a need for the sublime and others have a need for the literal or practical. As a former atheist I always had the idea the literal was the truest and religion was claims of the literal. And that works for the more literal minded people, they see science and materialism as the best tool for their lives, but I've always been hungry for the sublime and which is I found new age stuff appealing in my teens. I've since recently discovered the sublime in christiananity and western culture as a whole and I must say I'm saddend I was never sold the sublime aspect of both as a kid, I feel robbed.

"The shiftiness, the double sided aspect of the serpent symbol appears also in the story of the bronze serpent on several levels. The Israelites had been plagued by serpents, and to save them from the poisonous bites, God told Moses to make a bronze serpent and to put it on a staff. "

The Staff of Osiris is what it is called.

The Double-sided aspect of the serpent is Osiris and Isis

"Finally one of the most, if not the most, important of the numerous sources from which the departed Pharaoh hoped to draw his sustenance in the realm of Re was the tree of life in the mysterious isle in the midst of the Field of Offerings, in search of which he sets out in company with the Morning Star. The Morning Star is a gorgeous green falcon, a Solar divinity, identified with "Horus of Dewat." He has four faces, corresponding to the four Horuses of the East, with whom he is doubtless also identified. 2 We find him standing in the bow of his celestial barque of seven hundred and seventy cubits in length, and there the voice addresses him: "Take thou this king Pepi with thee in the cabin of thy boat. . . . Thou takest this thy favorite harpoon, thy STAFF which ⌈pierces⌉ the canals, whose points are the rays of the sun, whose barbs are the claws of Mafdet. King Pepi cuts off therewith the heads of the adversaries, dwelling in the Field of Offerings, when he has descended to the sea. Bow thy head, decline thy arms, O Sea! The children of Nut are these (Pepi and the Morning Star) who have descended to thee, wearing their garlands on their heads, wearing their garlands at their throats." Here the homage of the sea is claimed because Pepi and the Morning Star are bent upon a beneficent errand for Isis and Horus. 1 The story then proceeds: "This king Pepi opened his path like the fowlers, he exchanged greetings with the lords of the kas, he went to the great isle in the midst of the Field of Offerings over which the gods make the swallows fly. The swallows are the Imperishable Stars. They give to this king Pepi this tree of life, whereof they live, that ye (Pepi and the Morning Star) may at the same time live thereof."

I have always been fascenated by the Celtic and Anglo-Saxon symbolism of interlacing representing the interconnectedness of everything. This includes the interlacing of tree branches and roots. And sometimes the interlacing of tree limbs with animal and human limbs as well. (and also with serpents) It reminds me of how different the mind set was of these ancient Celts and how much has been lost over time. Perhaps its not too late to recover some of this knowledge.

Separating order from chaos seems like creating a closed system to me. We know that open systems are very unpredictable whereas a closed system is insulated from external variables and can function with improved predictability. Now picture that in reference to Earth and the vastness of space, as we currently understand it...

He started at the garden too, when it was time for him to die. To the garden and all the way up the hill of the skull with that cross. It's been said, the Jewish people found the ark of covenant. They found it right under the ground where the crucifixion took place. And on top of the lid was dried blood, where they tested the blood and it was Christ's blood on top. He positioned the ark centuries before, for when the soldier speared his side, the earthquake happened to let his blood go through to sanctify the top of the ark of the covenant.

The word in Genesis is "lingum", not "arbor". It means "wood" but also can mean "tree" just as in English we can say "the wood" or "the woods" for forest. The antiphon for Good Friday in the RCC is "Behold the wood [lingum] upon which hung the salvation of the world." All the parallels of the Cross of Calvary with the Tree of Life are intentional.

I have read also from Luther that the tree of knowledge of good and evil was as a temple or church because it was the one place that Adam and Eve could show obedience to God. As they had no limits save that one, that was the only thing they could do to show their admiration and love to God… the only way they could “give back” or “sacrifice”.
