In 60 years of listening to music, I've heard many pianists play Chopin. It is a difficult art to acquire. In my youth, I used to revere Rubinstein but now in my 70s, I keep coming back again and again to Arrau, not only for Chopin but Beethoven as well. Something in his dedicated serious approach and nuanced performance resonates with my soul. Many thanks for keeping us immersed in heavenly music.

Concuerdo plenamente.

In 1957 (October) I was studying violin in Koeln/Rhein under the auspices of a Fulbrght Grant and I attended a recital given by Arrau. The first encore was the D Flat Nocturne by Chopin, something that was indelibly etched in my mind, the power, the beauty, the layered sounds, the limitless colors... I am now 87 years old and this Master is, in all repertoire, still my most favorite pianist, and the Nocturnes are still the best of the best. mk

Absolutely, Arrau can't be bettered! Oddly enough though, my other favorite Nocturne recording is Pollini, I believe from 2005. The slightly high - strung nature fits so well. Two opposite ends of the spectrum. Both are so authentic. Maybe dusk and dawn?

His passion is placed within the dimension of each phrase. He can be mournful, bittersweet, lilting, joyful, pained, ephemeral, exultant, apologetic, tenuous, then suddenly bold, but with the reserve due the moment. He has elevated my soul today! Arrau is a mercurial cloud, seeded with depth and understanding. I just love him. His music prompts this thought...we must protect the sensitive among us. They remind us of our humanity. They are a gift to all of us, and are vulnerable in a way that many might not appreciate. You can hear this. He is an emotional genius.

All of them made fabulous recordings that I cherish. Arrau is sublime, Pollini heroic, and Rubinstein jumped headlong into Chopin's soul. We hear Chopin played by many artists. Why when we hear Senior Arrau are we much happier and can notice it is being played masterfully? I think, for one, the recording is superb! It’s like the producers knocked on our door one day and asked, “ hey, sorry to bother you while your stuffing that delivery pizza down your gullet, but we’re with Claudio Arrauand he would like to record here at this house. May we stuff this huge piano in your ear for optimal recording please?”
The piano’s legs are sitting evenly on the surface of our cochlea and we hear everything that happens to those keys in detail. That’s one reason. The recording.
On a heavier note, that picture of him on the cover of the vinyl looks so gentle. Like a grandfather that never raised his voice, everyone did what he asked. He never had to ask twice for for what he wanted. His wife, grandma, had the best home cooked meals waiting every evening for him and he never missed dinner for anything grams felt loved. When he would sit with you, the
aroma of Brut or some other scent like Old Spice would dance over and swan dive into your left nostril.
I kind of think that’s why I like this particular
Chopin. The recording and it being played by the world’s best grandpa. I would have loved to watch him while he recorded this and be sure to take note at which part of the song he was playing when the vice slowly turned and gently squeezed his throat. When did he hurt or when was he crying? When we’re the emotions on alert? Well, many, many parts of every song for me I’m afraid. Many, many parts of them.

He interpreted by heart the Bachj's well-tempered harpsichord forty-eight preludes and forty-eight fugues, a feat that Beethoven had attempted but which he could never perform in public.

Since I'm chilean, I grew up listening how amazing Claudio Arrau was, "he's among the best ever, absolutely unique", "we should be proud of him" were statements that I heard frequently. Since at that time I was a kid, I ended forgetting about that cause at my home - sadly - my parents weren't big fans of classical music.
When I started at my university I began to discover classical music on my own, listening as much as I could. At that time I developed a strong aversion for cheap patriotism in general, and for some weird reason, I got the stupid idea in my mind that all that praise Arrau got in my country was nothing more than an example of chauvinism, for that reason I never cared to listen to any of his recordings.
Some years later, I was at a local music store, looking for some death metal albums and some Chopin's music played, hopefully, by Rubinstein (which was my favourite by a huge margin) but I couldn't find any; the only one available was this very same recording you uploaded, so I said "ahh well, let's give this guy a chance".
What can I say, from the very beginning I was totally hooked, literally with my jaw open, listening Claudio Arrau giving me a lesson on how to play Chopin properly, like saying "see? this is what Chopin had in his mind when he composed this". The accents, how subtle some passages are, that tenderness and that sense of sadness reaching new highs that it never occurred to me it was possible. His command over the instrument is so impressive that - I don't care how cliché it sounds - it looks like the piano is an extension of his body. At that moment he became my favourite, all the rest began to sound to me like a badly translated book. Of course, I also felt like the biggest idiot in the world, for not giving Mr. Arrau a chance earlier.
"He's among the best ever, absolutely unique", "we should be proud of him", today, being 42 years old I can say for sure, no chauvinism at all, just true statements that still fall short when describing the genius of Claudio Arrau.
Thanks a lot for uploading this gem :)

Forgive name dropping by a 70 year old, but having already heard Rubinstein, Richter, Gilels, Moravec and so many other legends live, it still came as a shock to have encountered Arrau in person for the first time playing Liszt’s A major concerto. The tone was unequalled for noble, ermine beauty and the tone was the musician and the man. Although he admired Cortot and (this may surprise some) Vladimir de Pachmann, Arrau had no patience for Chopin tradition. This was the German-trained champion of Bach and Mozart cycles in Berlin - Chopin’s two favorite composers. Yet without swooning Arrau (the Etudes perhaps aside) remained elegant, sensuous… and profound. He was also wonderful doing what Andre Gide prescribed: making ruminative pieces sound as though they were being conceived as one played. After the Nocturnes try Arrau’s live 1960 Preludes. Thanks so much for sharing.

As a very young child I remember my mother playing these at home, I felt so save and in a state of tranquility even a at a very early age. I did not know what was being played until much older of course, but those sounds were in me from early memory.
