Removing stumps for our leach field isn't that easy on our Alaska Homestead

  • We have to remove some stumps to install our leach field for our gray water. Living in southeast Alaska removing stumps can be difficult sometimes. A lot of times trees roots grow together making one big root ball but if we want to have a functional leach field on our Alaskan Homestead we have to get them out of the way. We used the Stihl MS291 and the Kioti CK3510 Tractor to get these stumps removed.

    Good job with the stumps, they are tough!(actually I had more choice words for stumps but they can't be printed)...I cut them up to use as firewood, stump wood has lots of embedded pebbles, dirt and rocks, so I outfit one saw with my least favorite chain and bar and I have to sharpen the chain teeth more often(like every use) But stump wood takes a long time to dry, bad side. Good side, it has a LOT of energy in it. Like hemlock extra....

  • @TheUserid82
    @TheUserid82 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is a some what cheap way to make some oversized gutters you can put on the cabin or any other structures using rebar and roofing tin sheets. Using a stump and pipe you can bend sections of rebar into the shape you want for the supports to hold the gutters and sheets of roofing tin cut down the middle make for good curved oversized gutters once you know where to cut to get the ridges to line up between sections.
    A ring roller can make the rebar bends easier and access to a welder can let you weld on flat stock to make attaching it to the wood easier. You can also cheat by including a wood shed and other out buildings into the water collection areas to increase how fast you can refill the water. IBC totes at the far collection points to reduce the large pipes needed as you can then run smaller pipes to gravity drain from the tote to the big tank over a few hours

That weather up there doesn't look like it's warming up to much. Some of those stumps off the old spruce and hemlock trees how they grow around just on a few feet of dirt they get heavy. I remember a couple of the root wads out North Douglas and up eaglecreast 10 to 20 feet around. After it rained the dirt and a few rocks off of them there was a family that lived past Auke bay that was trying to get them. Those stumps will not burn for crap either so its learn how to grow or build around them... I lived in the S.E.alaska for around fifteen years and then moved to wasilla and times have never been better. Sure some of the finest people I ever met were down there around wrangle and petersburg ...even ketchikan... I lived more on the prince of wales and loved it there but wow the rain is so miserable and bugs that will drain your blood down quick. I live in wasilla now north of anchorage now for the last close to thirty three years and now wished it was first but being a young logger was the deal then the hard times and mills started shutting down... no place to live unless you built it yourself. I do miss the deer hunting tho....... even though it takes two of them to makes stew for everyone around the table.... ok thats a stretch but the moose here are just as thick as the deer and one of them are a meal for several months. Just about anywhere you go here is like living in the states except for the "adverbs" and work a plenty except for logging but there is still timber like you have there in your front yard. Costs came down significantly too. Housing is still hard but in the southeast, it was always tuff. I have wintered in a car down there before with money in my pockets.In that stump patch that your a living in.... a need for a good excavator is very high.... a dozer will get it done but a decent excavator will get you through and still have money in the pockets.. I haven't seen this channel before but now found, did the honorable thing and subscribed to you as that won't hurt nor help very much... least a man can do for a fellow alaskan. Where are you all from? what got you up here and what kind of work do you follow???

      Yeah it’s hard to get them stumps to burn. That’s pretty cool, logging down here in SE. We head up to my brother in laws in Fairbanks for moose. Mmmm
      I’m from Oklahoma and my wife is from Juneau. Her parents still live there and that’s why we settled in the SE. I retired from the army and then worked at a gold mine for a few years when we first moved here. Now we just live off my retirement and maybe some day TH-cam could bring in some money.

      Traditionally to heat up greenhouses, etc. manure would be put down deep before each season… a lot of people in Alaska use water barrels, painted black, filled and left in a row inside the greenhouse along the north wall, and if necessary using multiple layers of plastic with spacing between and sometimes bubble wrap to extend the growing season up where it’s cold…..

    • @AnAlaskaHomestead
      @AnAlaskaHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes we get all of our water from rain. There is a natural spring on the island so if we got desperate we could always go fill up jugs there
