Among the first of my blu rays that I ripped onto my systems hard drive was Star Wars episode 4 A New Hope. The first time I saw this movie was in an actual theater when I was nine. Seeing the entire movie in a virtual theater I was like “Holy Moses! I’m a kid again!” 😃😃😃😃😃😃
Thanks, I guess the process is the same for Gear VR? Does Make MKV work with DVDs as well? If we're reducing to 720p I doubt you'd see much difference in the end result between by Bluray and DVD.
Yeah mate, will work with Gear VR the same and MakeMKV works with DVDs too. Even though resolution reduced to 720p, the higher bitrate of Blu-rays would result in a better picture

I'm about to buy an oculus go for movie/youtube watching because i'm getting always lazier to use my cv1, but would you say that the SDE is much better? is the only thing that stops me to use the cv1 to watch movies to be honest.. than, i see that the movies compressed are only 1.2 GB, here in Italy the go is 220€ for the 32 gb, do you think that is enought for general use and a couple of movies? the 64 goes to 270€ (318$ US) too expensive IMO.. expecially already having a cv1
Hey mate, I would absolutely recommend the Oculus GO for watching movies, the SDE is drastically reduced which is great. I've spent a lot of time lately watching Netflix and movie rips in the Oculus GO and even though it 720p it crystal clear due to the way spherical resolution works. I can't watch movies in the Oculus Rift the resolution isn't good enough imo, I mean it's cool sometimes but it really a gaming and social VR device. The Oculus GO on the other hand is absolutely perfect for TV/Movies. I have the 32GB model and find it plenty enough for a handful of movies and a couple of games for around the house. Plus it will support expandable storage into he near future. Only time I'd recommend a 64GB model is if you travelling for like a month and need to load it up.
Do you know if this procedure would work for 3D blue rays as well? Watching 3D on a VR headset instead of the inherently dark and flickering 3D tv seems like it would be so much better.
I think it a bit more involved for 3D movies but I managed to do it on my Rift. Will put together a 3D version of this tut in the next week amd upload :) Stay tuned

This is really the best use for Oculus Go, personal theater. This, and 360 vids... Because for gaming, with no positional tracking, and no tracked controls, it's pretty worthless. Great way to see a few 3d movies that actually benefited from the 3d as well, I found The Walk was particularly better for the 3d, the high wire sequences were vertigo inducing!
Actually with an Xbox One controller (later bluetooth version) Oculus Go is a very capable mobile VR gaming console for fixed camera games. Look for titles with gamecontoller support like Herobound, Witchblood, BlazeRush, BombSquad. Ofc it's not roomscale and all, but it's very close to what nintendo handhelds are in the console market.
yeah, I assume there are a few titles originally designed for the Mobile gear VR that will work just as well on the go. But let's be honest, they were mostly pretty meh... As a personal theater, video and movie viewer though, this thing looks like it will be best in class! Light, comfortable, wireless, won't eat up your phone, and high resolution.

I sideloaded Minecraft to the Go and it works perfectly fine, kids love it. If the official Go version will come out it will be a system seller by its own.
What if ripping a DVD instead of a BluRay? I don't have a blu-ray player on my computer, so instead I ripped a DVD using makemkv and was surprised that it took up 6.4GB of space. I assume this is a 720x480 file, so I thought it would be smaller. What conversion resolution choice do you recommend in Handbrake to substantially shrink the file while retaining most of the DVD quality? I really don't want much worse than standard DVD quality. Hi Matthew, just use the 'Super HQ 720p' setting in handbrake instead. I'll have a video up in next few days just for DVDs but that will get you started :)

F4CEpa1m x_0 don't have a go myself, but it's always a pleasure to watch you teach, and i like video conversion topic in general. I believe you could go with ffmpeg script as well with some dialogue form - i don't handbreak overloaded with stuff

Question for anyone with a Go, how enjoyable is watching movies on the Go like this? How much does the lower resolution, screen door effect, physical discomfort etc take away from the experience? And is it worth buying a Go mainly for watching movies/Tv shows on the device in this manner? Thanks
Hey mate, all I do with my Oculus GO is watch movies and would recommended it for anyone just for that. It has higher resolution than a Rift and reduced screen door effect (which is a good thing). It is great ,the screen door is forgoten after a few seconds and being in a huge movie theatre is great.I get claustrophobic on planes and it was really cool to be in the theatre to watch the movie.the go is pretty comfortable
I have a VIVE but I've always watched 3D movies with an app called Cineveo. This is pretty much the same thing. I've had my kids grandmother watch a 3D movie and now she wants VR. I lay and watch. But I can imagine since it's wireless you can lay ANYWHERE comfortably and watch. I'm DEF interested in getting Oculus Go just for movies. It'll stay right on my nightstand next to my bed just for watching a movie before bed.

After makemkv but before handbrake use BD3D2MK3D to get 3d Blu-ray to your go.

What if you're using a mac book pro 13' with no blue ray driver? any solution.?
You'd need a Mac compatible USB bluray drive. Make MKV and Handbrake software is compatible with Mac so you'll be good to go

Ah bugger :/ Seems quite a common complaint with wider IPD's. To be honest, I'd sell it if that were the case. Not much can be done
