I was talking to a younger girl at work about how I prefer TH-cam and don’t have TikTok. She was legitimately baffled, as if TH-cam was some kind of archaic, long outdated human technology…like I was riding a horse and buggy and everyone else had cars…although it’s basically the exact same thing but with longer, higher quality videos. It’s really perplexing how TikTok became people’s only source of media seemingly overnight, while having no real advantage over other mediums.
yes, but you got to admit that it makes you feel 'better' than her in some way, I feel it too after talking to friends who spend most of their time on socials and phones on tiktok, while my only social place to go to is youtube, I wonder why it makes me feel better than them lol

And the people who make these social media platforms are complete psychopaths. They don’t care about the people using them at all. There’s plenty of vulnerable people out there mindlessly scrolling that will only end up worse. My advice to anyone reading this comment - realise that it’s bad for you, learn to think for yourself, and live 60% of your day without your phone. Difficult to do, but see how much better you’ll feel.
@@ZacharyCortex I wish it was that easy 😂. I said that massive paragraph but yet I still struggle. I swear it’s more addictive than the drugs we normally think of
@@CT-pv9gu There’s a movement of people reverting to ‘dumb phones’. I was gonna do it a couple years ago (before it was cool) but circumstances made it inconvenient. Now it’s a bit harder to conceive of, but I’m seriously considering it again. I might buy the newest iphone when my current one reaches expiration (it’s doing very well so far, may have some years to go) but also buy a basic old school phone at same time. Keep iphone for portable web browsing, emails, and books when necessary, but out of reach 99% of time (more purposeful usage) and keep ‘dumb phone’ on person for call and text not that I receive many lol
I am currently writing a research paper about the negative effects of TikTok and after reading so many different articles on top of this video it's clear that TikTok is becoming more of a plague rather than an application. I read an article stating that children on average use TikTok or other forms of short-term media around 3 hours a day this early introduction to an app this addictive will begin ruining their lives before they even know what social media addiction is. In short, this is an exemplary explanation of the negativity that goes hand and hand with the app. I truly wish this video had more views. Regardless I'm happy that some people like you still find the need to try to warn such an ignorant generation.
Hey! Thank you so much for the comment I really appreciate it! Completely agree with all you say here. Good luck with the paper, maybe send it over would like to give it a read! Working on building up the views.....feel free to share with anyone you think may be interested! 🧠😅
As a therapist, a lot of my patient right now unhappy with their life because they use social media in wrong ways... 1. They spend a lot of time to see other people's life rather than focusing their own daily activity. 2. Start comparing themself n doesnt appreciate what their own achievement. Continue...
That is very interesting - I agree social media drives these issues big time. The damaging comparisons element is also a good issue to raise - one which I dont talk about in this video.....mostly because its a ubiquitous problem across multiple social media platforms. Not just tiktok.
Social media are not designed to be healthy, they are designed to hold people there by provoking their negative emotions & use algorithm to hold them addicted. Also makes you not feel like you need to socialize with the people in the real life.
It's sad that short form content is too easily accessible. I uninstalled tiktok years ago, but I can't seem to regain my focus or attention span as there are so many alternative ways to get that same hit. I have a website and app blocker on my phone yet I keep turning it off to watch videos like the zombie I am.
Yeh its very tricky when it is so easy to access! Maybe you could try a behavioural change and find a more productive activity to replace some of your tiktok/shorts use!
truly frightening, i'm a week in in trying to quit with harmful social media and i caught myself opening up insta automatically more than once, i literally felt like i was "waking up" when i realized i was scrolling, i now realize that "mindless scrolling" is truly mindless. I have a question though, do you think longer content, like normal youtube videos, is part of the problem too or we shouldn't be worried about it?
I think technology in general is overstimulating and ruining our attention spans whether we admit it or not. Just try to cut back the best you can, no need to worry about it further. I got my average screen time phone screen time from 5 - 10h to 1 - 4h so thats a win for me.
Before I was against banning anything. I've never had the app, but shorts on Facebook, youtube and others are too similar. After seeing the sales of user data and the brain rot, I really hope there is a reconsideration of banning tiktok, it really is damaging to its users.
Thanks for the comment! Not sure if I'm for literally banning tiktok as I think banning things in general creates other issues. But I am for people being educated about the risks of the things they choose to do, which was one of the reasons motivating this video!
Even if TikTok/TH-cam shorts has some videos with good advice or education, they are ineffective because the short form nature means that you quickly forget the videos after having scrolled away from them.
This is probably the best video about TikTok addiction I’ve come across You explain everyday effects instead of just the chemicals and it helps connect the dots very easily. Thanks ❤
I know this is old, but i absolutely love your explanation. I posses the guilt of once being a scroller on tiktok. Night, day, id throw my attention span away just to be happy. Now, its been so long since ive ever gone on the app. Im reducing time off of the internet and epending more time reading in hopes that i havent totally screwed up my brain. Being calm and content is true pleasure
This is genuinely one of the best videos i saw on the subject. Seriously. The way you bring the science behind it is incredible!! It's so mind-blowing how those big corporations are using this system to control our minds for their own benefit. The fact that they came up with this system of only using your thumb and their algorithm is fascinating but scary at the same time.
Thanks you so much for this comment I really appreciate that! Yeh its v scary - and ini the year since I published this the usership has only increased.
i got an alert saying that i spent 28 hours on tiktok in a week, which is insane. i am 15 and should not be wasting my youth like that, so i will delete the app.
@@ZacharyCortex i noticed after over 1 year of excessive tiktok use everyday, even at work, i declined pretty significantly and people noticed, could deleting fix this?
my friend prioritizes tiktok over me, i haven’t had a conversation with her in weeks. shes too addicted to fucking tiktok. shes always ignoring me and watching tiktok 24/7
Good news, one year later. I have found an option button, which can allow you to tell the algorithm that you’re “not interested” in shorts as a whole. In the column where shorts are shown, just click the three dot icon. Now, I don’t know if this will entirely get rid of shorts for the viewer, but I assume as long as you don’t engage then you’ll never see them again.
I’m a younger millennial who decided to see what TikTok was about when it started getting bigger in 2019. In the past, I had issues with addiction to Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram so when I saw the format of the app, I had a bad feeling about it. So far, I try to avoid TikTok for the most part, even though I know it has some good content and info. It is frustrating that other platforms are introducing TikTok “mechanics” to retain their own usership, which is disappointing for people like me who are trying to resist app addiction.
Thank you for your comment. Its tricky because companies want to keep you engaged and using their platforms more so employ these addiction-led tactics. Good luck resisting the app addiction - its something I think we all struggle with!
To be honest, the ‘info’ on tiktok is *_largely_* *junk* Do yourself a favour and keep the app deleted. Life goes on without it. I had provided with fb and reddit in the past too, but again, life goes on without.
Hey man thanks so much for the comment! I feel that - quitting is so hard.....ive never had tiktok but i quit facebook about 6 years ago and it was really difficult........100% worth it stay strong it gets easier 💪
After NNN I’m gonna do Don’t Dwell(on social media) December. I am spending a shameful amount of time on here. IG reels used to be the problem but now it’s mostly YT shorts. Luckily I found a way to disable them temporarily. Same account on pc (chrome browser at least) I have an option on my homepage right above shorts to disable them for 30 days. Clicking that disables them on phone too, but only till you click on the shorts page
Thanks for the comment :) DDD sounds like a good idea, good luck! I always say 'not interested' to shorts if YT recommends them to me so dont see them that often anymore.
Thanks so much for that video! I'm glad that you're so wise and I wish more of people were aware of those things you said. I'm struggling a bit with tiktok addiction, but I'm fighting with it more and more, bc I've already experienced its damaging effects (weaker memory and attention span). Unfortunately, I see many of my friends (or even some kids from family!) being completely addicted and not seeing anything bad in this app - just justifying, that it;s not that bad, because there's some educational content sometimes, or that that's an entertaintment for them. That's very sad and idk how to talk with them :(
Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate you being so honest and hopefully others will read this comment and gather strength that a TikTok addiction is actually very common. Good luck getting off the app!
I know people that got locked for hours on a TikTok scroll. It's kind of scary. It's like they're there physically, but mentally they're totally checked out. It's really hard to get through to them when they're deep in the scroll.

Thank you for sharing this and not perpetuating the myth of dopamine detox. I stopped using TikTok because my algorithm seemed to tap into my anxiety. It showed me conspiracies and made me feel like the world was ending. When I got out of my bed to turn the lights off, I realized I was actually so scared that I felt paralyzed. At that moment, I realized I couldn’t use the app at all if that’s the only type of content that can catch my attention long-term
Hello! Thank you so much for the comment and for sharing. It's so so hard when these apps are so dishonest about their incentives. All they want is your attention and not your wellbeing. Good luck staying off of it!
Can confirm. Went on a camping trip for 1 week, little to no social media and loads of social interactions, i felt like a new person. One time i completely got rid of all social media, anything tech that was syimulating that released dopamine and instead did chores around the house. I also felt much better and felt so good and confident in my new self, that i said "i can handle the occasional youtube video" Well, eithin the next 2 weeks all progress was gone and i was back where i started. Its time to stick to it and not turn back. Its really not worth it, its like a drug. Even TH-cam, which there are videos im genuinely interested in, if done for long enough, just keeps me going on the next video.
Thanks for the comment! Its so interesting how great an improvement one can have by getting away from social media but then plunge back into it again! I guess its just an ongoing battle. Good luck staying off of it!
Thank You !! Video is spot on of what I was talking about several years ago. My only social media (if that) is commercial free YT. I watch co-workers (I call them) digital zombies - their productivity (attention span) is severely compromised
Thanks for the comment I completely agree, I'm the same only social media is youtube. I dont have fb or ig, everyone just seems so glued to them (video on the effects of ig being made right now!)
Super annoying. I haven't download or use tiktok. Now other social media literally copying tiktok! Example TH-cam. I love youtube so much. My favorite social media platform. And now they are like tiktok and all that shi because of shorts. I hate it! We can't go anywhere!! Unless TH-cam takes action, and add a disable shorts.
I agree in terms of long term user enjoyment! Don't think youtube will get rid of shorts though they are too good at driving engagement because of their addictive nature!
There’s a girl I know who is so badly addicted I don’t know who she is without it. Her days are filled with creating Tik Tok or watching. Hours and hours. When we are around each other all she she does is these two things (despite my clear reluctance to be in her videos) or talking to her friends on the phone. To the point it takes over our whole outing and we don’t have one conversation This is a TRAVESTY! Their souls and brains are inextricable! There’s no distinction between life online and off line. It’s Tik Tik perennially
@@ZacharyCortex thanks for the reply! I don’t think she will ever see reason. She has gone off with other people and cut me and some family members off. She never takes the time to text or call (despite being on her phone for hours a day) but her feed is still full on Facebook and Insta so she’s still active. I hope someone steps in and sets boundaries, or finds videos like these ones. Before her life and relationships are completely ruined.
Sounds like your friend is barely scratching the surface of the mental illness to come. My neighbor used to be outgoing and a very caring person. She got wrapped up with TikTok about a year ago. It started like you described and got to the point I was no longer willing to sit and have a conversation with her. A month ago she knocked on my door and asked me to help her move a mattress in her house. See… she was around 120 pounds and really pretty a year ago… now she’s 350 and looks more like something off of Roblox or something. I didn’t know who she was at first… but I figured it out pretty quick. I walked into her house of stench and I wanted to punch someone. It takes an extremely putrid smell to make me mad, but man…. I had to hold myself back. She walked me to the back room, where I assume she spends all of her time. There was trash just flowing out of her bedroom like she thought she lived in a landfill. I looked around and there were spider webs everywhere… like she simply didn’t give much of a damn about reality. Her bathroom had a path to the tub, but the only towels or body cleaning products in it were the toilet and toilet paper. Her towels were on the floor where she apparently attempted to clean the floor at some point and just left the towels lying there. They were literally starched to the floor at that point. She then confessed to not taking a shower in over a year, nor having washed her clothes in over 9 months. I then met her bf. He wasn’t on TikTok and was just as pissed at her as I was. He couldn’t leave her because they’d been together so long, it would have been worse than a divorce to leave her. She apparently had sold his car while he was away on a business trip and had squandered the money on Temu and TikTok. $14k he said. He told me she is a pothead and TikTok junkie. By junkie he said she buys a thc vape, gummies, and actual weed once or twice a week. Thats how fast she goes through it. Right then, she came out of her room with her headsets on yapping on TikTok… but she had painted her face with eye shadow in a manner you’d expect to see at a satanic ritual. Think they called her princessbuttsparkles or something stupid like that. If anyone serioysjy needs to be permanently banned from the internet, it’s her. At first she kinda scared me. She came out of her room with this blue wig on and a vibrator in her hands. I’m standing there like… yo, you gunna handle your business here? Dude was like, “I’ve tried she simply won’t listen. She’s hooked the same way a meth addict is.” I knew this lady fairly well and this is not who she is. She apparently had told him she loved him, but she wasn’t in love with him after 14 or 15 years together. She was “trying to find herself.” That’s when he piled up and said, “you better figure it out soon or you’ll find yourself sleeping on the streets with the dogs where you belong.” That started an instant argument and I had to excuse myself from them. There was no difference between their house and a crack house. She had destroyed the entire place. Too bad too… that house is so pretty and we live in the mountains with great views. It’s not a cheap house. In the end, these folks are destroying themselves and the very reality they live in. They destroy the lives of those close to them as well. They have no regrets about it either. And those are most likely the type of folks you’ll find living in homeless camps in San Francisco etc. These people are worthless to themselves and society the way they currently are. They are no good for themselves either. It was once explained to me by my Japanese wife that everything a person does affects everyone around them in some way or another. There’s not much anyone can do without others lives being affected from it. These people aren’t hateful….typically, and they’re mostly harmless… just basically addicted to something that has turned them into the biggest dummies I think I’ve ever met, or watched on any social media platform.
I know one who’s addicted to the point that her life is basically three things: go to bed at 5 am, wake up at 12pm- 2pm, and go live at 3:30pm until whenever. It’s basically eat, sleep, livestream. People who have left her channel claim she’s “obsessed with money”, but she never barely ever spends the money she makes. She lives with her parents, showers once a week (which she tells people regularly), wears the same clothes every day for up to 2 weeks. I wish she could see this video but she’s not interested in anything other than battles or sleeping.
Very interesting video, thanks for a thorough explanation! I need to share with a loved one now 😉 And when you mentioned the medical specialists adding valuable content to TT my immediate reaction was : if they want the best for their followers, they should find a more healthy medium for their content, there’s no other way.

I had to click the "do not show again" button on all the shorts that appeared on my TH-cam to prevent them from being recommended. It acually works, if you find this anoying too you can try, it's so worth
Thanks for the comment! I managed to get rid of youtube shorts from ever being suggested by always clicking 'not interested' on them......then it is just the shorts button at the bottom of the app to try and avoid but I agree they should give you an option to remove it!
@@arathc23 Oh thats funny! Yeh I couldnt find an option to remove shorts, if you just tell youtube on each short video that you arent interested i think they get the message eventually then when you arent being recommended them waay easier to avoid them

Yeh agreed thats a good thing......i would say this video is interesting even for those who arent addicted just as an FYI for the neuroscience of how other peoples brains are affected by tiktok
Yeah, I realized when I did watch YT Shorts, I wasn’t getting anything out of it, even if I watched somewhat educational content - so I stopped. And now that I tried to convince others in my school about it, they just don’t want to hear it - so they just continue. I have certainly realized why phone usage is so limited in many schools… but I would like to see more research on mobile games too, as I find them to be just as bad when it comes to the quality of entertainment, and how best to convince others to stop 🙃

I've never had Tik Tok, because I had concerns over the CCPs involvement with it and more importantly that it was basically spyware at the time (probably still is now, if not worse). I've advocated against the usage of social media to my friends for years because it had been an huge issue for me previously - having been addicted to Facebook; and to see platforms like Tik Tok make Facebook seem harmless in comparison is very disappointing to see. Ivr only ever used shorts to advertise a product. To my suprise it got thousands of views per day! But no sales. Seems like people may be in default off mode with shorts, and dont remember that thing they clicked like on.
This!!! 😮 I have seen a lot of videos about this “dopamine addiction”, but it never really gave me the answers as to why these are so addicting, but when you mention the default network, it made perfect sense! 😢 I try to be mindful and access that throughout the day with walking with no music or just doing like knitting and no sound etc, but apparently I’m also switching off my brain while also frying it in the process 😮 That’s just terrifying! Did see the dog and bone video from Huberman but ofc I forgot it until you mentioned it, because that’s what these apps have been doing to us, nothing sticks anymore… Will make a lock screen on my phone with this info to help me remember, I know to much about that default network to be using it on TikTok etc. Damn! I don’t have TikTok, but my phone just in general, this is MADNESS 😮
Between all this social media, esp Tik Tok, and video games, our society is going down and down everyday. TV is also bad, and couple that with social media and video games, it's even worse. Everyday I step outside, maybe close to half of people either have their heads down texting or scrolling through photos or are constantly talking on their phone. What the heck do they talk about all the time?!
I'm a victim, not of TikTok, but of Instagram and TH-cam. I saw the damaging effects of TikTok, and thought that by not downloading it, I was better off. That would only last for a short time, as Instagram and TH-cam quietly adopted a similar model. So what do I do? I avoid mobile social media (aside from messengers like Discord or FB Messenger) and I install as many extensions as I can on desktop social media sites to combat the issue. It's a sad reality of the world that consumers have to go so far out of their way to prevent the problems of TikTok from dominating people's lives.
I've been saying it's bad for .e. it .makes me stressed, annoyed, impatient and just my attention span to watch a whole youtube video has gotten bad. Everything is hurry up in my brain. I got off tiktok a d stop watching shorts a big difference, calm and happy.
youtube does have the option to remove youtube shorts, if you turn off your watch history it won't show you any recommended videos and shorts are just cut off
I had to stop yesterday. I'm always finding myself addicted to something. I had to quit all social media prior and now tiktok. I already feel the withdrawals. It makes me sad because it reminds me of when I did alcohol. I stopped but the withdrawals feel exactly the same. Brain is like," come on, just one more hit, joey". Sad. I thought I had the whole addiction thing kicked but I found myself addicted to something else.

Its considered shameful to not use tiktok if you're gen z which is stopping people from quitting. It's an essential part of your everyday life that everyone peacefully complied with simply because its useful, no shit they made the search engine less accurate(
Thanks for the comment! Yeh I can appreciate its difficult to not be on something when everyone else is........maybe there needs to be more of a movement to make it more 'popular'
Think of the movie the matrix. TikTok is that matrix people are creating for themselves. You… well, you’re the one studying them and trying to save them.
In this video I tried to include a range of studies looking at the effects of TikTok - I had a look at the differences between the Chinese version vs the American version and the essence of the user experience (30s-ish videos intended to entertain) seems to be the same? I'm not sure they are dramatically different making cross comparisons impossible?
Shorts remind me of crack, no substance, just the compulsion to keep taking in more! It is actually boring, unpleasant even, yet you are motivated to keep doing it, even as you feel like ass. That is what TikTok is! And yes, I have tried crack and I have watched shortform videos, 100% would not recommend, brain rot, garbage, uninteresting, not fun, destroys the brain, but you will seek to do it until you run out anyway, except TikTok doesn't run out. Maybe they should just rename it "e-Crack!"
8:06 Mixing medicine with poison? That's what happens at school. Unlike school that forces you to go through all stuff, TikTok adapts to your needs and maximizes value! That's the gold behind the algorithms. This is why after a bit of watching, social media algorithms can detect preferences and maximize productivity per minute. As I am commenting here a lot, I bet I will be served more videos on TikTok, addiction and Zachary Cortex. Once I get bored, I will re-focus and the algorithms will notice! Perfect!

About that paper on "TikTok Use Disorder", I bet you that TikTok doesn't cause anxiety or depression, but is more likely to attract people who are that type of person to TikTok. It's like how introverts will be online 70% of the day, and extroverts spend 70% of the day outside (mostly), limiting themself to social media. It might cause memory loss and affect attention spans though. Good video!
Hey! Thanks for the comment. I think its likely to be both actually? It attracts people with a proclivity to depression and anxiety but also has these effects for a wider population who find themselves mindlessly scrolling on tiktok.......also for almost everyone, if you spend an hour wasting time when you should be doing productive work this will always leave you feeling a bit crappy (speaking autobiographically). .....I also think its powerful evidence that if you remove social media from people who suffer with depression, you see a reduction in depressive symptoms. This begins to show a causal link?
@@ZacharyCortex "I also think its powerful evidence that if you remove social media from people who suffer with depression, you see a reduction in depressive symptoms." It's the opposite for me and that's such a bummer because I want to bring my screen time down. I genuinely feel worse without though and I find it hard to imagine otherwise. Maybe if going offline is replaced by positive activities and real life social contacts but what about people that don't have access to those? That's something I just keep thinking about. There must be a solution for everyone...
@@Shirumoon Thanks for the comment! Yeh the studies don't have 100% of people improve after deleting social media. I acknowledge that some people benefit greatly from the connections of social media.....I think there are a majority of people though who could benefit from a reduction in screen time.
I would love to see an update on this in relation to tiktok lives. I understand this to the point of short video formats and the way it keeps people scrolling. But with the addition of tiktok live and adding coins and gifts, it's whole other level of addiction that I have seen first hand with my ex, we had been together nearly 14 years.. And she dropped me once her tiktok live addiction got out of hand I called her out on it. She literally picked tiktok live over me, and most of her family, she's just a tiktok zombie spending every available minute on lives, and knowing some addicts with alcohol and drugs, it's incredibly similar in terms of their lack of being able to admit their addiction The change in the their personality was unreal, just became someone else and zoned out of the real world.. As I say tho I think tiktok live is a whole other beast to just tiktok
Hi there, thank you for sharing this I'm so sorry to hear about your circumstances, that must be really tricky. I am looking to make an update to this video.....just ind of waiting for some big research papers to come out as I lilke to focus on the evidence from large scale studies. Also the Tiktok live stuff is also new to me. I actually didnt even know about this as I havnt researched TIkTok in the last year.
Omg 😮 I don’t have TikTok, but this is some of the most scary things I’ve heard!! It looks just like an addicts behavior 😢 I’m so sad to hear that this ruined your life together 😢 I’m just in shock, didn’t know about this 😮
I am wondering if fast edits, every 2 to 3 seconds, to put a sentence together affects the brain to aid an addictive nature/viewer retention. I think YB is just as bad as Tik Tok.
I think youtube shorts are just as bad as tiktok.....i think that lots of long-form youtube content is more similar to a documentary or a film that builds up and teaches topics in an engaging way without cuts every 2-3 seconds (indeed this is what I strive for in my videos!)
So if a user is not tiktoking but just looking at the ceiling 19 times a day for 74 minutes, which would activate his default mode network, would it also hurt their brain or mental capacity and induce addiction? Is relaxing 19 times a day bad for us in itself? How is relaxing using tiktok different from relaxing while watching TV?
Hi sochacky, great question….it’s not clear to me that looking up at the ceiling would necessarily activate default mode network (DMN). We do fMRI on people at rest and don’t always see DMN activation….having said that if someone was meditating effectively and activating their DMN, that defo wouldn’t have damaging effects…..I think its that combining DMN activation with a dopamine releasing/addiction driving behaviour is a damaging combination. Additionally, TikTok will be activating a bunch of other areas in your brain in addition to DMN (such as visual cortex, auditory cortex, basal ganglia/hippocampus/memories) that heavily distinguishes it from looking at the ceiling or meditation. I would say Tiktok is quite different from TV based on 1) The attitude you approach it with. TV is usually something to enjoy at the end of a working day, not in 30s chunks regularly throughout the day. 2) Additionally people sit down to watch a whole programme usually for 15 minutes+ and not just for very brief periods multiple times a day. TV also isn’t built to be swiped on throughout use. Sure you may flick through channels though usually you will settle on something and invest more than 30 seconds watching a programme…..one final thought - you also don’t carry a TV around in your pocket and have access to it 24/7, it is usually in another room and requires a bigger commitment to go and start watching. Very interesting question thank you, given me a lot to think about!
Great point! Substitute books for tiktok, you get the same mechanisms, same "addictions", and only "conclusions" differ because books have good press, tiktok does not! For kids, tiktok beats books because it fulfills the educational demands more accurately (I am speaking of happy free kids, not those ruined at school)
@@ZacharyCortex I'm comoing in from cognitive sciences - brainhacking - accelerated memorisation - the EU life long learning program - innovations in learning. Kids know tiktok and social media are competing for attention and selling things. There's also indications they get their priorities right very quickly. And how about "the brain knows best"? You know in learning the "zone of optimal learning, proximal development, the goldilocks principle", leading to stable memories vs obligatory learning that results in weakly linked neural networks where 90% is forgotten in a month and these networks are recycled for learning other stuff. Cf the tiktok clips, TV, books, having access to nice and closeby available places playing outside, closeby friends - I think the brains of healthy kids will sort out an optimal combination that is healthy for them. I just asked my kid: yes, he knows these pass out tiktoks but these kids fall in the category of "downies" = stupid kids and the info it's dangerous quickly caught up as well with the kids journal he also watches interviewing experts telling why this is dangerous and showing kids that got in a coma or died. Kids know tiktok and social media try to compete for their attention with real life, real friends, experiencing life. Kids get ict training year after year for every age group. The moment you know, it is explained, most of the danger is gone. Doesn't it seem to be much like our previous generations warning about the dangers of the steam powered locomotive train - un-natural speeds - some farmers mentioning their cows stopped giving milk at the sight of it, etc? Don't the postitives outweight the negatives? I trust my kids brain. The place where we live is really sustainable-social-solidary-circular, offers lots of alternatives, idem the schools and teachers are all into lifelong learning, a good mix of formal and non-formal education, lots of opportunities to put your own accents in what you want to learn, leaving enough space for spare time and non-formal education. I don't have to push stuff on them, they have a natural learning drive, social being drive to go out and seek rewards there, sports clubs, dancing, ... tiktok has a space, but not all the space.
Tiktok shows short videos with many different topics and in a short span of time, you've been exposed to hundreds of different ideas, funny, sad, happy, scary videos all at once. This will mess up with your emotions, your thought process and because you get used to watch short videos, time itself will never seem enough, therefore shorting your attention span. In time you will never have a fixed set of ideas because of this chaos of ideas. Looking at the ceiling has nothing to do with looking at tiktok. Because the ceiling is always the ceiling, the same. It is not a bluelight screen, it doesn't harm you, it's not a digital thing, it's real and it's there. But of course standing on your bed looking at the ceiling for long periods of time is also bad, because we need activity.
Really interesting video! i actually decided to search this up after going to uninstall tiktok for about the 4th or 5th time (i always end up installing again😅). I just notice i always feel awful after going on it for a while, often for too long - so overstimulated and my brain is just fried and overwhelmed. It’s a shame because there’s some great stuff on there but we’re not supposed to live our lives watching 10 second snippets of other peoples😭

nobody that uses tiktok listens when i tell them this stuff the scientific jargon, though not excessively hard to understand, completely throws them off and makes them close their mind to it pretty frustrating but at least i’m not using tiktok
I want to know if it reduces cognition, because I see so many people in public watching random, bright/loud, 20 sec videos nearly drooling, like they aren't even conprehending what they are viewing. I feel like this short, mostly silly, videos are actively killing brain cells. I'd rather read books.
It definitely reduces cognition in some ways - this is more tricky to test as (one way) requires doing intelligence tests before and after huge amounts of tiktok use which is a study that just wasnt really done.....and nowadays almost impossible to find a large group of teenagers that have never used tiktok that are happy to join a study involving using it for hundreds of hours. Its not clear whether titok actively kills brain cells......though the psychology literature is clear that it causes our ability to concentrate to plummet. I prefer book too!!! (or making youtube videos haha). Thanks for the comment!

Although I agree that social media on ANY platform and any OS carry’s the same weight. Ironic that this is posted on YT. The differences between a mouse brain and a human brain are substantial.
It's all the fault of parents who hand their 2 year Olds iPad just so they can avoid raising them
As a therapist, a lot of my patient right now unhappy with their life because they use social media in wrong ways...
With disjointed language such as you've just displayed, you're no therapist ok.
It's sad that short form content is too easily accessible. I uninstalled tiktok years ago, but I can't seem to regain my focus or attention span as there are so many alternative ways to get that same hit. I have a question though, do you think longer content, like normal youtube videos, is part of the problem too or we shouldn't be worried about it?
I think technology in general is overstimulating and ruining our attention spans whether we admit it or not. Just try to cut back the best you can, no need to worry about it further. I got my average
screen time phone screen time from 5 - 10h to 1 - 4h so thats a win for me.
They should come up with rules that you have to record for 5-10 minutes minimum to share videos
Even if TikTok/TH-cam shorts has some videos with good advice or education, they are ineffective because the short form nature means that you quickly forget the videos after having scrolled away from them.

She’s hooked the same way a meth addict is.”
I knew this lady fairly well and this is not who she is.
Honestly, i feel like tiktok is falling off i find I'm using yourube more often, and i rarely use it now
Thanks for the comment that's interesting to hear!
Very interesting video, thanks for a thorough explanation! I need to share with a loved one now 😉
And when you mentioned the medical specialists adding valuable content to TT my immediate reaction was : if they want the best for their followers, they should find a more healthy medium for their content, there’s no other way.
Hey Marta! Thanks you so much for such a lovely comment :) Being a new youtube sometimes its hard to get feedback on whether videos you are creating are actually understanding/interesting/helpful! So i really appreciate this. Have a great day :)
They need to shut tick tock down I don't care who takes over

I had to click the "do not show again" button on all the shorts that appeared on my TH-cam to prevent them from being recommended. It acually works, if you find this anoying too you can try, it's so worth
Thanks for the comment! This is exactly what I did too!
TikTok and YT Shorts are very similar, I got rid of tiktok. I need YT to make a disable button to get rid of Short.
Thanks for the comment! I managed to get rid of youtube shorts from ever being suggested by always clicking 'not interested' on them......then it is just the shorts button at the bottom of the app to try and avoid but I agree they should give you an option to remove it!
@ZacharyCortex I swear I didn't find an option to remove it. It just stopped suggesting it ever since I looked up these videos.
I didn't even press the Not Interested button
@@arathc23 Oh thats funny! Yeh I couldnt find an option to remove shorts, if you just tell youtube on each short video that you arent interested i think they get the message eventually then when you arent being recommended them waay easier to avoid them

9:07 "tictok doesn't care as long as they can package hours of your attention and sell it to advertisers, they're happy." I love this statement and it's my take home advice.❤
Thanks! I fully stand by that comment!
Sometimes I open TH-cam on my phone and it goes straight into shorts and I get lost for hours.
Yeh it so true. i you start navigating away from shorts and stop clicking on them (easier said than done) youtube will stop showing them to you
Why do i keep getting this in my recommended when I'm not addicted to tiktok i don't even use tiktok really i don't really think I'm addicted to anything tbh
Which is a good thing
Yeh agreed thats a good thing......i would say this video is interesting even for those who arent addicted just as an FYI for the neuroscience of how other peoples brains are affected by tiktok
i'm considering deleting this app after 8 years of using it for hours daily, it ruined me
I'm so sorry to hear that. Definitely consider deleting it for a bit! :)
Thanks so much for the comment!! :) Definitely agree
Im thinking of writing a disertation about the effects of tiktok and identity. There are so many aspects of your mind that can be negativley influenced by social media addiction, especially nowadays
Yeh definitely agree. Sounds like a v interesting dissertation!
I dont know why I found your channel just now, and I have no fucking idea why you have only 1k subs, this is quality neuroscience content, I tried to actively find small channels like yours a while back, but couldnt, so im glad I found your channel, thanks!

Children are definitely not spending 75 minutes on tiktok more like 2-3 hours
Yeh definitely - some even more. I think that number is skewed by the fact some children dont have it at all and never watch. Those that have it watch loads and loads

Great video.

Ivr only ever used shorts to advertise a product. To my suprise it got thousands of views per day! But no sales. Seems like people may be in default off mode with shorts, and dont remember that thing they clicked like on.
Thanks for the comment! Very true!
Did see the dog and bone video from Huberman but ofc I forgot it until you mentioned it, because that’s what these apps have been doing to us, nothing sticks anymore…
Will make a lock screen on my phone with this info to help me remember, I know to much about that default network to be using it on TikTok etc. Damn! I don’t have TikTok, but my phone just in general, this is MADNESS 😮
Thanks so much for this comment I really appreciate this and glad if my video was helpful!
I'm so glad I don't use Tiktok. Or else I wouldn't feel like myself right now
Thanks for the comment, good for you!
Yeh i notice on the trains around london that everyone is just looking down at their phones!
Thanks for your reply and your openness! The way I avoid it is by not having any social media at all! Which I know is quite extreme but works for me!
I've been saying it's bad for .e. it .makes me stressed, annoyed, impatient and just my attention span to watch a whole youtube video has gotten bad. Everything is hurry up in my brain. I got off tiktok a d stop watching shorts a big difference, calm and happy.
Thanks for the comment! That is excellent very happy for you!
Fun fact 😂😂 someone was unable to finish this video and went to look for the short😂😂
Hahaha - yes unfortunately no shorts on this channel! Just boring, fairly expansive long-form explainer videos. Hope you still enjoyed it though 😅
youtube does have the option to remove youtube shorts, if you turn off your watch history it won't show you any recommended videos and shorts are just cut off
Oh cool thanks for letting me know!
Thank you so much for the comment! It is so difficult to stay off these things but good luck in your efforts!
This is incredible information, could you provide sources for these insights? I'd love to look further into them
Thanks for the comment! All papers and references are cited in the description (apart from papers where I should the actual paper title and authors within the video fotage in which case you just need to google that exact title to find the whole paper) :)
I've watched some TH-cam shorts, but i don't find them enjoyable. So i just leave and watch regular videos like this.
Thanks for the comment! Much appreciated!
The study you cited is for Chinese students where their version of TikTok is dramatically different than elsewhere
Ive just deleted it shouldve done it a long time ago im horrified of all the time ive wasted
Yeh fair play good luck deleting it and thanks for the comment!
Thank you for the comment! e-crack is a good name!
Thank you so much Zachary! This is incredibly enlightening!
You are most welcome :)
Thank you... But why do we have to endure background "music" loops while you're talking...?🤔
I just switch off😬😕
You are welcome! I think the music makes it better
Perfect!

What grades do you get in school?
@@gowtham8909 I wonder what you are trying to prove. I got the worst grades and expulsion, as well as the best grades and science constest. All within 3 years.
Good video!
TikTok also might facilitate it but not cause it directly.
This begins to show a causal link?
attract? all the world is using it...
Technology, social media, apps, Netflix, etc has really done a number to people.
I completely 100% agree.......and people don't even realise there is a negative impact
She literally picked tiktok live over me, and most of her family, she's just a tiktok zombie spending every available minute on lives, and knowing some addicts with alcohol and drugs, it's incredibly similar in terms of their lack of being able to admit their addiction
The change in the their personality was unreal, just became someone else and zoned out of the real world..
It’s stimulation to an unreal level. Staring at the cieling is a task that would make any tik tok user suicidal
Thanks fo much for the comment I really appreciate that! Yeh quitting tiktok is very difficult.....maybe you can come back to watch this video again if you feel the urge to download it again!

The stupid challenges such as the pass out challenge is very old, at least 10 years old and originated on TH-cam

Why the algorithm suggesting me such good video a year and an half later, seems TH-cam doesn't like this kind of video

nobody that uses tiktok listens when i tell them this stuff
the scientific jargon, though not excessively hard to understand, completely throws them off and makes them close their mind to it
pretty frustrating but at least i’m not using tiktok
Thanks for the comment! maybe you could try send them this video 😅
Ahh yes, I love receiving brain damage after watching a TikTok my friend sent me.
The odd one here and there is probably not going to cause these effects, who doesn't love the occasional hilarious video a friend sends 😅
Where did it start?

I actually found your FB post and tried to email you based on the email address on your FB page but it said the address wasn't valid? Anyways if you drop me an email would be great to get in touch!
Thank you so much for posting and promoting this video. It's the first time a really large platform has shared a video I have made so I really appreciate it :)!
just sent this to my friend who is addicted to tiktok
Thanks!
anyone who is familiar with the electromagnetic field of an MRI machine is going to call bullshit on "people used ticktok during an MRI scan", without getting a phone explosively embedded into their head/chest
Anyone who is familiar with fMRI paradigms knows that a projector can display a screen visible to the person being scanned with MRI conditional buttons that allow them to interact with the screen without having to have ferromagnetic metal in in the MRI environment
@@ZacharyCortex if you didnt make this video in an MRI, i'm calling BS
Ah yes the same football edit 12 times in a row with different photos. Let’s watch them all. Great video Zac still watching them!
Thanks QPR Clips! Next video on how supporting QPR affects your brain? 😂
@@ZacharyCortex you know me 😂
It’s Ben btw
@@ZacharyCortex probably has rather adverse effects
@@QPRTV Hey Ben I know :) I'm a big fan of your channel!
@@QPRTV Yeh very true!
Although I agree that social media on ANY platform and any OS carry’s the same weight. Ironic that this is posted on YT. The differences between a mouse brain and a human brain are substantial. We have more of a choice not to follow the carnal path than an animal. We always have a choice to decide rather than going on primal instinct. That matters.
Thanks for the comment! I agree - but if I don't post to youtube where else could the information be put out there? Unfortunately getting people to read a blog or something like that is v tricky
@@ZacharyCortex why do you feel the need to warn people about the very thing that you’re using then?
@@EvolvingSessions I think TikTok is a lot worse than youtube. TH-cam is a phenomenal tool that brings education and entertainment that doesn't seem as accompanied by the anxiety and depression. Above I was agreeing the distinction between mouse and human brain
@@ZacharyCortex yes I understand what you were agreeing to. I don’t have any anxiety, etc.. from using TikTok. That’s why I made the comment about the primal mind such as a mouse. Humans can choose not to let them end effected by something like that. Phones in general will give me anxiety though lol
@@kanabanakamura864 agreed
Truly wish Canada would get rid of the app. Maybe it should shut down ban it.
Maybe it will? I'm wondering if this will ever be a serious discussion in Britain too
@ZacharyCortex USA is doing it I heard. I find tikok unhealthy.
@ZacharyCortex it actually spies on people makes me nervous.
This makes so much sense ...
Thanks for the comment!
I really appreciate your efforts
Thanks so much! I really appreciate your comment!
You need more subscribers. Couldnt agree more greatly reducing (only watching videos my mates send me) has darastically improved my performance at school.
Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate that! Working on it!
I saw one kid that said "Look at my TikTok screen time"
I saw "4 hours" and I was like "4 HOURS..... EVERY SINGLE DAY???"
And then I saw another day and guess what is said?
7 hours. 7 HOURS? ISN'T THAT LIKE A QUARTER OF A FRICKING DAY AND NIGHT COMBINED?????
Yeh mad, crazzyyy amount of time to spend on it
I downloaded TikTok for the very first time, and when i opened it, i was immediately bored and couldn't scroll without cringing, l do not know how TikTok is addictive,
You my friend are very lucky, I think this is a pretty rare experience. Good for you!
im ngl sometimes ive dreamt of scrolling on youtube shorts and thought it was real, it wasnt even a dream it was like a hallucination

What an interesting and high quality video. You present your content really well. I hope you can get more traction!
Thank you very much I hope so to! :)
TH-cam is just as bad especially with the shorts you want to go from one point to finger swiping up with your corner finger on TH-cam
Yeh agree thats why I dont have and dont watch any youtube shorts!
TH-cam FOREVER THX FOR THE EFFORT
You're most welcome!
I am 15 years of age and currently searching for disciplined corporation partners in which are similar ages. I plan on formulating a multibillion dollar corporation and would enjoy having similar minded men with the same ambitions.
(If you’ve deleted TikTok)
Thanks for the comment!
This is the reason l uninstalled Tiktok in my phone, and also dont allow my kids to watch
