    I was talking to a younger girl at work about how I prefer TH-cam and don’t have TikTok. She was legitimately baffled, as if TH-cam was some kind of archaic, long outdated human technology…like I was riding a horse and buggy and everyone else had cars…although it’s basically the exact same thing but with longer, higher quality videos. It’s really perplexing how TikTok became people’s only source of media seemingly overnight, while having no real advantage over other mediums.

      John 3:16-21
      16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

      6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

    I am currently writing a research paper about the negative effects of TikTok and after reading so many different articles on top of this video it's clear that TikTok is becoming more of a plague rather than an application. I read an article stating that children on average use TikTok or other forms of short-term media around 3 hours a day this early introduction to an app this addictive will begin ruining their lives before they even know what social media addiction is.
    In short, this is an exemplary explanation of the negativity that goes hand and hand with the app. I truly wish this video had more views. Regardless I'm happy that some people like you still find the need to try to warn such an ignorant generation.

In the past, I had issues with addiction to Twitter, Reddit, and Instagram so when I saw the format of the app, I had a bad feeling about it. So far, I try to avoid TikTok for the most part, even though I know it has some good content and info. Can confirm. Went on a camping trip for 1 week, little to no social media and loads of social interactions, i felt like a new person.
    One time i completely got rid of all social media, anything tech that was syimulating that released dopamine and instead did chores around the house. I also felt much better and felt so good and confident in my new self, that i said "i can handle the occasional youtube video"
    Well, eithin the next 2 weeks all progress was gone and i was back where i started.
    Its time to stick to it and not turn back. Its really not worth it, its like a drug. Even TH-cam, which there are videos im genuinely interested in, if done for long enough, just keeps me going on the next video.

    Luckily I found a way to disable them temporarily. Same account on pc (chrome browser at least) I have an option on my homepage right above shorts to disable them for 30 days. Clicking that disables them on phone too, but only till you click on the shorts page

And now that I tried to convince others in my school about it, they just don’t want to hear it - so they just continue. I have certainly realized why phone usage is so limited in many schools… but I would like to see more research on mobile games too, as I find them to be just as bad when it comes to the quality of entertainment, and how best to convince others to stop 🙃

    I'm a victim, not of TikTok, but of Instagram and TH-cam. I saw the damaging effects of TikTok, and thought that by not downloading it, I was better off. That would only last for a short time, as Instagram and TH-cam quietly adopted a similar model.
    So what do I do? I avoid mobile social media (aside from messengers like Discord or FB Messenger) and I install as many extensions as I can on desktop social media sites to combat the issue.

    So if a user is not tiktoking but just looking at the ceiling 19 times a day for 74 minutes, which would activate his default mode network, would it also hurt their brain or mental capacity and induce addiction? Is relaxing 19 times a day bad for us in itself? How is relaxing using tiktok different from relaxing while watching TV?

    • @ZacharyCortex
      @ZacharyCortex  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi sochacky, great question….it’s not clear to me that looking up at the ceiling would necessarily activate default mode network (DMN). We do fMRI on people at rest and don’t always see DMN activation….having said that if someone was meditating effectively and activating their DMN, that defo wouldn’t have damaging effects…..I think its that combining DMN activation with a dopamine releasing/addiction driving behaviour is a damaging combination. Additionally, TikTok will be activating a bunch of other areas in your brain in addition to DMN (such as visual cortex, auditory cortex, basal ganglia/hippocampus/memories) that heavily distinguishes it from looking at the ceiling or meditation.
      I would say Tiktok is quite different from TV based on 1) The attitude you approach it with. TV is usually something to enjoy at the end of a working day, not in 30s chunks regularly throughout the day. 2) Additionally people sit down to watch a whole programme usually for 15 minutes+ and not just for very brief periods multiple times a day. TV also isn’t built to be swiped on throughout use. Sure you may flick through channels though usually you will settle on something and invest more than 30 seconds watching a programme…..one final thought - you also don’t carry a TV around in your pocket and have access to it 24/7, it is usually in another room and requires a bigger commitment to go and start watching.
      Very interesting question thank you, given me a lot to think about!

      Great point! Substitute books for tiktok, you get the same mechanisms, same "addictions", and only "conclusions" differ because books have good press, tiktok does not! For kids, tiktok beats books because it fulfills the educational demands more accurately (I am speaking of happy free kids, not those ruined at school)

      @@ZacharyCortex I'm comoing in from cognitive sciences - brainhacking - accelerated memorisation - the EU life long learning program - innovations in learning.
      Kids know tiktok and social media are competing for attention and selling things.
      There's also indications they get their priorities right very quickly.
      And how about "the brain knows best"?
      You know in learning the "zone of optimal learning, proximal development, the goldilocks principle", leading to stable memories vs obligatory learning that results in weakly linked neural networks where 90% is forgotten in a month and these networks are recycled for learning other stuff.
      Cf the tiktok clips, TV, books, having access to nice and closeby available places playing outside, closeby friends - I think the brains of healthy kids will sort out an optimal combination that is healthy for them. I just asked my kid: yes, he knows these pass out tiktoks but these kids fall in the category of "downies" = stupid kids and the info it's dangerous quickly caught up as well with the kids journal he also watches interviewing experts telling why this is dangerous and showing kids that got in a coma or died.
      Kids know tiktok and social media try to compete for their attention with real life, real friends, experiencing life. Kids get ict training year after year for every age group. The moment you know, it is explained, most of the danger is gone.
      Doesn't it seem to be much like our previous generations warning about the dangers of the steam powered locomotive train - un-natural speeds - some farmers mentioning their cows stopped giving milk at the sight of it, etc?
      Don't the postitives outweight the negatives?
      I trust my kids brain. The place where we live is really sustainable-social-solidary-circular, offers lots of alternatives, idem the schools and teachers are all into lifelong learning, a good mix of formal and non-formal education, lots of opportunities to put your own accents in what you want to learn, leaving enough space for spare time and non-formal education. I don't have to push stuff on them, they have a natural learning drive, social being drive to go out and seek rewards there, sports clubs, dancing, ... tiktok has a space, but not all the space.

      Tiktok shows short videos with many different topics and in a short span of time, you've been exposed to hundreds of different ideas, funny, sad, happy, scary videos all at once. This will mess up with your emotions, your thought process and because you get used to watch short videos, time itself will never seem enough, therefore shorting your attention span.
      In time you will never have a fixed set of ideas because of this chaos of ideas.
      Looking at the ceiling has nothing to do with looking at tiktok. Because the ceiling is always the ceiling, the same. It is not a bluelight screen, it doesn't harm you, it's not a digital thing, it's real and it's there. But of course standing on your bed looking at the ceiling for long periods of time is also bad, because we need activity.

    About that paper on "TikTok Use Disorder", I bet you that TikTok doesn't cause anxiety or depression, but is more likely to attract people who are that type of person to TikTok. It's like how introverts will be online 70% of the day, and extroverts spend 70% of the day outside (mostly), limiting themself to social media. It might cause memory loss and affect attention spans though. Good video!

      @ZacharyCortex  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey! Thanks for the comment. I think its likely to be both actually? It attracts people with a proclivity to depression and anxiety but also has these effects for a wider population who find themselves mindlessly scrolling on tiktok.......also for almost everyone, if you spend an hour wasting time when you should be doing productive work this will always leave you feeling a bit crappy (speaking autobiographically). .....I also think its powerful evidence that if you remove social media from people who suffer with depression, you see a reduction in depressive symptoms. This begins to show a causal link?

That's the gold behind the algorithms. This is why after a bit of watching, social media algorithms can detect preferences and maximize productivity per minute. I want to know if it reduces cognition, because I see so many people in public watching random, bright/loud, 20 sec videos nearly drooling, like they aren't even conprehending what they are viewing. I feel like this short, mostly silly, videos are actively killing brain cells. I'd rather read books.

    • @ZacharyCortex
      @ZacharyCortex  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It definitely reduces cognition in some ways - this is more tricky to test as (one way) requires doing intelligence tests before and after huge amounts of tiktok use which is a study that just wasnt really done.....and nowadays almost impossible to find a large group of teenagers that have never used tiktok that are happy to join a study involving using it for hundreds of hours. Its not clear whether titok actively kills brain cells......though the psychology literature is clear that it causes our ability to concentrate to plummet. I prefer book too!!! (or making youtube videos haha). Thanks for the comment!
