A Second Blood Transfusion for Baby Elephant, Phabeni

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 16 พ.ค. 2024
- We mentioned earlier this week that we had wanted to give Phabeni a second blood transfusion after discovering his white cell count was very low, and to give him a boost of healthy blood from big bull, Mambo. We went ahead with this once the weather was cooler and are sharing the procedure in this new video. Phabeni is currently doing much better following this blood transfusion, the extra drips, and with added fruit to his diet.
We gave him three bags with 500ml of blood from Mambo, as well as drips with vitamins, including vitamin B12 to rehydrate him and replenish his levels. Phabeni was very weak at the beginning of the weak, with such low energy that he could not join the herd out in the bush. We kept him home while he recovered.
Adine picked up this week that the wound on Phabeni's hip has acted up again as it became hot. So during the blood transfusion procedure, Dr Rogers attended to the wound. He opened it and found pus, which was cleaned out. He applied an antibiotic ointment to it. From previous Xrays we took of Phabeni's hip, we can tell them a piece of bone in the hip area fractured off, likely from the dart that was used to tranquilise the little bull during his rescue. We are organising sonar equipment to assist us in getting a better look at the bone now so that we can proceed in removing it so that it doesn't cause further trouble. We importantly need to prevent the bone from getting infected.
Dr Rogers gave Phabeni a broad-spectrum, long-working antibiotic to assist with the infection in the wound, and later this week followed this up with another antibiotic.
Phabeni drank two full milk bottles after the blood transfusion, thanks to the sedation medication that boosts appetite.
This procedure is going a long way in helping to get Phabeni back to usual strength! Thank you for your concern for him, and your continued compassion for the elephants.
Thank you big Mambo!
Thanks to all everyone who is caring for Phabeni.
I hope we can see him running around with Setombe and Klaserie soon.
It's so extraordinary to be able to know and love this unique herd of elephants. In the wild, very few bulls are part of the matriarchal lot, so this 'teamwork' is doubly special. So glad Mambo has stayed close since his big adventure last year!

Yes. His elephant family is very importent for his psychical feeling. Thanks to all that knows what he need ❤
We appreciate your concern and support, thank you for being there for Phabeni.
Thank you for the kind words.
Thank you for the love 🐘💕💕.
Without all the care and medication, Phabeni would not be here today, Thank you Adina, and the carers , also donations, The vet, 🙂♥️🐘🐑
Thank you for your concern and support during this challenging time. 🐘
That thought has gone through my mind as well.
Fishan would never have survived his injury if it had not been for the love and care of The Herd. They certainly go the extra mile.

@@LibertySneedenthank you for sharing. I didn't know this. ❤️🐘❤️
Who else is running home to check up on updates about this little elephant baby? As soon as I get in, I tell my husband “ I have to check in on Phabeni!” It’s amazing how much his personality changed when he got ill . Even his very first day there he was so lively… thank you to all of the carers in this orphanage. ❤️You can really see all the love you are giving to these amazing creatures.
My husband can't understand my enjoyment of The Herd.
😅
I'm retired, so I can check for updates any time. Rather marvellous.
I live checking in and keeping up with this channel. I love baby Elephants. The herd the HERD team .I learn a lot about African elephants whom we would never get a chance to be do close to in the wild. Living their best lives. Every one is precious and it helps educate people that the elephants have complex highly evolved clans and emotions and aren't just things or resources to be trained for circus or shit for ivory. They are amazing. And every death by human hands is tragic.
I check often for updates and hold my breath that it’s not bad news. I love that little baby so much.
😀
l live in Australia, as soon as l get up l get on to see how little Phabeni is going. It's amazing how much effort is being put into getting him back to his adopted mama and aunties ❤️. Absolutely wonderful ❤️... Absolutely beautiful ❤
No baby on earth could have better care. You are an impressive team.
Thank you so much. 💕💕🐘
It truly warms my heart to see such caring people in this world.
Love, family + blessings can work miracles❤️💙🐘👩🌾👨🌾🙏
I don't think Phabeni knows that he is an elephant yet 😊 he's being so well cared for by all the wonderful team
@@ulla1623 I'm positive Phabeni knows that he's a precious baby bull elephant 🐘💙❣️ I believe he also realizes that he NEEDS human TLC because he's sick + can't be with his HERD😥🐘 right now. Phabeni Beni is a PROUD baby bull + knows he will one day grow into a strong, proud ADULT bull elephant with the HELP TLC + ENCOURAGEMENT from his HUMAN HERD💙❤️🐘🍼🐑👩🌾👨🌾👍 God Bless to all🙏🙏
So much love and concern for Phabeni's health. Thanks to all for doing everything possible to help him.
Thank you for your concern and support.
Let’s take a moment to appreciate Adine’s skill in noticing Phabeni’s wound site was warm and that was not normal. I can’t add anything else that hasn’t already been said in all these heartfelt comments.
Yes, I agree!! Adine is an extraordinary woman, mother, caregiver, mentor + friend❤️👩🌾👨🌾🐑🐘🙏 Her unwavering Love + Devotion is to be ADMIRED + RESPECTED!! Thank you Adine for being the awesome woman you are!! I believe there's a special place in Heaven for SPECIAL PEOPLE like you!! I hope you know + feel how much LOVED you are by people around the globe + of course your PRECIOUS ELLIES👩🌾👨🌾🐑🐘 Thank's for all you are + do!! God bless you❤️😘🙏
I find it fascinating that Phabeni received a transfusion of Mambo's blood. I hope that all the love & care, medical treatments and prayers from thousands will pull little Phabeni through! He also has the love of the herd, and that's crucial ro Phabeni's mental health. Baby elephants can get depressed and actually die from a broken heart. It's good that he drank his milk. Even though he eats plants & vegetables, he's still a baby who needs milk for the bulk of his nutrition. Bless everyone looking after the herd and this wee little ellie.
I will continue to pray for Phabeni's recovery. Everyone at HERD is doing their utmost to assist in Phabeni's recovery and they deserve special prayers for restful nights and happy days ahead. 🤗🌹🐘💕
We are grateful for your concern and thoughtfulness. Thank you for being there for us and Phabeni.
Amen, and thank you, Jesus.
Fenya died as soon as she realized none of her family were there.
Get well little bull Phabeni. We love you so much and are praying for you.🥰♥️🐘
Thank you for your well wishes.
❤🙏💞🙏
Does anyone know if Phabeni's hip injury was due to a broken bone, or has it been diagnosed as another problem? Hopefully, he's showing SOME signs of improvement or is it further decline?
They think a piece of his hip broke off when he was darted to rescue him and it sometimes festers and gets infection. But he is being treated and in future they may use a surgical procedure to go in and remove it entirely but not now. That's what I read I think.
Poor little guy. Prayers for Phabeni.
Thank you so much. 💞❣️
I am gratified to see Phabeni getting all the care available for his return to good health!🥰🐘 Thanks to Dr. Rogers and team, all the wonderful people of HERD, and, of course, Mambo.❤🐘 Thank you all!!!❤
Our Dearest Phabeni , please stay strong and keep fighting. So many of us are praying for you. Pls drink your milk bottles. We want you to grow big and strong so you can lead the next generation at HERD. ❤
Thank you all at HERD for your compassion and dedication 🙏 You will surely receive great blessings for your love and care for these beautiful creatures ❤️

Aldine is like another Allomother in the way she treats Phabeni & the other orphaned 🐘 that come into her care❣️ She's always touching them like their mother would. It's really sweet 💓✌️🇺🇸🐘
I think Phabeni feels Adine’s love for him just as any baby would from his mother. So touching!
So true!
I hope this helps. He’s such a special little guy.
I love him so much

💕🙏Thank you.
The whole team at HERD are nothing short of amazing in doing and trying everything possible for this sweet and feisty baby bull.....❤
Your kind words and thoughtfulness mean a lot to us, and especially Phabeni.
On a lighter note... Phabeni and Mambo are now truly blood relatives! :D Hope the little guy gets out of this ditch quickly! Thank you Mambo!!! Thank you Adine!!! Thank you Doctor!!! Thank you Team!!!
On a continent and in a country that has so little support and empathy for its vast poor human population, let alone almost disdain and uncaring for its waning elephant population, Herd's actions and care for this little elephant and the 16 other orphans are heroic and extraordinary. Thank you. You set the standard for humanity.
Oh bless his little heart. May God heal him and make him strong.
Thank you. 🙏💕
Amen!!
Get well, little buddy. Rooting for you!
Thank you so much. 💕
I am praying for you baby Phabeni. I am sending much love, peace and light, wishing you much health! Please drink your bottles..

Such a precious little life, so loved by so many.
We love you all carers and Adine! We all know how hard it is to watch Phabeni go through this process of healing. Happier days are surely ahead! ❤️❤️🙏🙏
From South Carolina. Have been and continuing to pray for this baby and all the team. Thank you!
I am pleased that you will be organising equipment to locate the piece of bone and removing it and very aware that all this medical treatment will be expensive. I hope all that are able to make a donation do support Phabeni, even small donations add up and can make such a difference.
Thank you for your concern and kind words. Your thoughtfulness means a lot to us and especially Phabeni.
Maybe that's where the main source of Phabeni's health problems lies?
Can you please tell me how to make a donation to the HERD?
We know that you and the wonderful team are doing everything possible to help precious Phabeni! Stay positive! Our prayers are coming across the miles to all of you! 🌬️💕
Your kindness is heartwarming, thank you for caring.
Never is there a doubt about their concern & dedication. ❤
You have been so brave, Phabeni. What a sweet baby. Get well soon so you can get that hip fixed once and for all. Thank you again, Adine, Dr. Rogers and Mambo for going the extra mile to make sure Phabeni is not only healthy, but happy.

Prayers for you Phabeni 🥰🥰💖❤️💗💗
This little elephant WILL get better. So much concern, so much expert knowledge, so much care and love - not to forget his fighting spirit and the security of his elephant family. Perhaps that piece of bone played a role (infection and discomfort) and that can also be rectified. Here’s hoping his appetite for milk increases! ❤❤❤
Thanks very much to you all. Hi Phabeni ❤️. Please 🥺 get better soon. Hi khanisa ❤️💕 hi all elephants 🐘❤️

This world can be so hard on animals. I’m grateful for the love and kindness and care you give to baby Phebeni. Take care of yourself too Adine. 😊
Thank you so much!
To everyone at HERD, I envy your patience and determination while caring for all of these beautiful animals.
We appreciate your concern and support. Your kindness is heartwarming, thank you for caring.
I know that the carers and Adines love, care makes little Phabi safe and secure.
That last scene with Adine and Phabeni hugging each other is priceless. And Stavros is a real gem. Both Adine and Stavros have a gentle touch and Seuntjie can feel this. Mr. M. Mambo may be a bit mischievous, but one day he and his little brother will have a little trunk-to-trunk talk, because Mambo's blood has been a lifesaver. Dr. Rogers is a gentle doc, in fact everything about this video is gentle. It was a pleasure to watch. I, and all of us are so grateful for your detailed updates. They keep us going. The prayer chain is a big one. Phabeni is a tough little cookie at the end of the day.... God bless all of you at the HERD from the USA!
Praying for this special little man to grow stronger & healthier 🙏 🙏🙏
Come on Phabeni, you can do it, get better ❤❤❤
May Divine Intervention and a Miracle Healing be yours ❤❤❤

Sweet, sweet baby Phabeni has a wonderful, experienced team to care for him! They are more tenacious than that infection! Ty Mambo, Nadine, team Phabeni, vet, vet techs for taking excellent care of him! He deserves the best card and is getting it!
Thank you so much!
I know you will get well Phabeni. You have thousands of people praying for you, and the love of Adine looking after you. You are going to be a big strong ;eader one day. Bless all who are looking after this "little" fellow
Hopefully the bone can be treated soon so Phabeni won’t have anymore separations from the herd. He needs his Mom and I’m sure she misses him too. Thank Adine + team, and Dr + team for helping Phabeni to get better ♥️♥️
It is hard for us to watch little Phabeni being so sick, so I can imagine how hard it must be for you his carers. Prayers and blessings to all of you.❤❤❤❤

Poor little Phabeni, I really hope you can sort this infection out, whether it's the piece of broken bone or whatever!! It's obviously very upsetting for the little one as well as for Herd staff!! You always do a brilliant job of nursing sick little Ellie's!!💯💯🙏🏻🙏🏻😃😃,,🐘🐘
Adine is in the mode right now she cares more about this lil dude than her own self. She is a warrior!!
This is wonderful news. He is so lucky to have all his caregivers helping him make a speedy and lasting recovery. God Bless all of you and of course Phabeni 🥰

Thank so much!😊🐘❤️
Wonderful watching the tenderness of Adine, the Carers and medical team, during this procedure. Very pleased the horrible wound is going to be dealt with.
I do understand that a surgical procedure is a very last last resort on a baby elephant. This time it seems this needs to be done.
Love, hugs & much encouragement from Liberty.
I want to thank everyone whos helping Phabeni. Hes really having hard times. Worrying everyone at HERD and your community on social media.
Phabeni has stolen the ❤ of so many people.
Hes also stolen the show with all his issues.

Oh my goodness! A broken bone in his hip. How stoic he must be. Can you imagine walking and standing and lying with broken bone in your hip? I wonder how that happened? Brave littlest bull❤❤❤
The injury probably occurred as a result of the Ranger darting Phabeni.
