They get that big in the middle of kansas as well...easy to catch too. I had many many like that as pets as a child. They're not aggressive, and you can tell when they are "mad". I assume that is a female as it is a nice large one. (right before the egg sac they get real big.) LOL@ trying for 5 years...LOL..You should have found them one of the nice centipede's they have in the desert...I have seen them as big as a ruler counting their back 2 legs, and just as wide. They seem to have average size ones on most youtube videos, not the really really big ones.

Lived in Arizona for many decades. The Arizona Blonde Tarantula is amazingly docile. We had many of them around our koi pond. As such, no problems with other insects. We used to feed them crickets if we found them. Whenever they would feel us walking by they would come out of their burros - for “food delivery” :))

I rescue spiders when winter hits here in Massachusetts, and I have canned and packaged fresh insects for my reptiles, and I was surprised to find as long as they’re fresh they’ll eat them from tweezer feeding or even by hand. I rescued several orb weavers and a funnel weaver and they’d eat on my hands and come out to greet me. My funnel weaver even laid two clutches of eggs after i rescued her on a freezing November night.

Up here in Minnesota we have a species of policidae affectionately called the daddy long legged spider or cellar spider.
I have this friend who had a large female in his basement. He would regularly feed it. These spiders have very tiny bodies with very long legs. Normally very small this queen was absolutely massive. Her abdomen was about the size of a pencil eraser, but her thin legs were nearly as big as a dinner plate.
She was a truly impressive beast.

YOU, specifically YOU, are the reason I’ve begun overcoming my lifelong severe arachnophobia… I NEVER thought I would ever be interested in spiders, but your jumping spider video was literally the moment 30 years of paralysis-level panic attacks began to subside… Your passion and love for these animals legitimately changed my life. I literally found myself hoping to see a jumping spider yesterday!!! That’s NEVER HAPPENED! I know you get these comments all the time but I just want you to know I can’t thank you enough. Ever since I was a kid, I would be so afraid of ANY spider regardless of size that I would freeze and start crying in absolute terror, I always hoped I could somehow overcome this fear but I never knew it could actually happen… thank you so much, I suffer with so much anxiety about so many things that having something that doesn’t cause a panic attack anymore is incredible ❤

As a recovering arachnophobe, I gotta say thanks for what you’re doing. It is helping. I’m a trail runner, and early mornings often mean spider encounters. Recently ran through the web of a huge orb weaver. Normally this would’ve resulted in some panic dancing, but this time a stopped and calmly helped the spider repel down to safety. After it was on its way, I wondered what the hell just happened!? 😂

That doesn't sound very arachnophobic hehe.
Personally I'm fine with spiders, I don't consider myself arachnophobic. Seeing them causes no panic. I'll carry them outside by a silk strand, etc.
But if they get ON me, unexpectedly, I get a lot less fine in a hurry. More of a 'jump scare' than a spider-specific thing.

Many of you might not know, but the word "tarantula" is actually derived from the Italian "tarantella" - kind of national dance, that was believed to cure a person bitten by a large wolf spider (in Europe it's Lycosa, Geolycosa and Hogna), thus originally tarantulas were called large European Lycosidae, but it has migrated to America with first Spanish invaders, who, of course, were unfamiliar with the nuances of spider families, since the only thing that mattered was the spider's size.

As someone who used to hike a lot in CA, AZ, and NV mountains, the snakes spiders and scorpions are not the only things that go bump in the night. Depending on where you are you can encounter bears, wild boar, deadly cats like the mountain lion that are man eaters. I know this generation doesn't like guns too much. But hiking around these places, you are NOT the top of the food chain and its pretty dumb to not be armed.

Biggest spider I ever held here in England was your standard Cardinal house spider. It was huge though, saw it moving across the carpet and thought it was a mouse. I could HEAR it moving, that's how large it was, probably 11-12cm legspan. So I grabbed it, like I grab every spider, and for the first time (and only time) ever, I could feel it BITING MY HAND over and over! Felt like a tiny needle pricking my outer skin. I have tough hands / skin thanks to years of bricklaying and stonemasonry, and it didn't "hurt", but it made me do a jig and feel really uneasy and I was laughing, shouting "STOP IT! SPIDER! QUIT!" as I raced towards the front door to toss it out.
Our biggest is the Raft Spider but nobody ever sees them anymore, they are almost extinct due to habitat loss. I think they built some ponds down south to conserve them, in secretive locations. But I think the Cardinals are bigger, but less massive. Perhaps a Raft spider could give a nastier bite. But still, we are lucky here. No dangerous spiders.

As an arachnophobe living in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado (the high desert) it’s nothing to have really big wolf spiders strolling through your house. I have heard something go “bump in the night “ and found a huge wolf spider that fell down the wall to the floor. I have actually heard them hit the floor. They are huge (I guess to my phobic eyes they are gigantic, lol). Love your videos!

@@vhlamingostreamsaudioconte403 I am not a arachnophobe perse but there are some species of spiders that unnerve me... funny part is that the wolf spider is number one on that list. For me the difference between the cuteness of the jumping spider and the uncannyness of the wolf spider is that the wolf spider resembles a weirdly deformed human skull with huge dead eyes (at least for me). The jumping spider on the other hand has not such a resemblance to my brain and as such is seen as cute and not at all unnerving. Don't ask why but it's just like that

Ever since I fell in love with the Jumping Spider, I have been taking a longer look at other arachnids. This Carolina Wolf Spider is an incredible animal! That Blonde Desert Tarantula is also very interesting. The whole Spider or Arachnid species are so amazing, because they are so insect like but are animals, a kind of Hybrid between the animal kingdom and the insect kingdom. Very interesting indeed!

Insects are animals, too. But you are right that large arachnids line up with our sense of what an "animal" is, whereas most people think of insects as more or less background noise, except when they become (or are seen as) pests. It's a shame most people never get to know those tiny animals -- insects are fascinating creatures deserving every bit of respect as animals we share this planet with.
Inverts deserve a lot of love, too :)

I hate to disappoint you buddy, but that thing is a baby compared to the one I once saw in my grandparents home. It was 2003, my dad and I were renovating his parents 138 year old house settled in a small Virginia town called Culpeper. It was a major renovation project with us starting by upgrading the kitchen first. We had taken out the old sink leaving behind a huge opening to the outside in the process. It stayed that way for several days until the new sink arrived. Upon installment my mom did the honors of doing the dishes that night in a brand new sink. She was there for an hour when suddenly she gave out a horrid scream and cry for help. I ran to the kitchen..."It's a spider! a huge spider!" she said. Thinking she panicking over a little spider I asked where it was..."Underneath the sink" she said. I knelt down to investigate and came face to face with the great granddaddy of all wolf spiders...I mean this thing was the size of my face! It scared me to death! I had seen some big one before, ones the size of my palm but this one could have literally killed and rat easily if it so desired. I never knew they could get that big. If you're ever interested in finding one head to the mountains of Shennandoah. Best of luck!

Now as a middle-ager I still can't get over my fear of them, despite knowing that they're actually good insects to have around, that some people even keep them as house pets to help kill other pests like cockroaches.

QUESTION: Do large spiders like this live in Michigan? I recently was mowing the yard near a property line where there are very large 12' tall to 14' tall phragmites. I swear I saw something very large moving that was a similar color to this wolf spider. About 30 years ago I saw a HUGE spider on a cinder block. This spider was in the shape of an "X" with four HUGE legs, and also an "x" with four smaller legs. I looked up pictures over the years. I "think" it may have been a "Grass Spider." But, I have never seen another spider of that type or that size ever again. The one I recently saw was different; if it was a spider it was thicker and deeper and browner.
